Rate this book
Ms. Gracie Sherwood—eight months pregnant and counting!—is on the run from her mobster ex-husband and the U.S. Marshals who are supposed to be protecting her. No one is going to keep Gracie from winning the Culinary Art Invitational cooking competition—her one chance at making a fresh start for her and the baby.

After a close call, U.S. Marshal Beauregard Logue finally convinces Gracie to stay close to him—which basically means he's become her personal taster! Gracie has to stay focused on the contest, and on her pregnancy, but it's hard to concentrate with a big handsome marshal asking her for seconds.

Gracie's falling for Beau, but have those feelings grown out of love or out of fear? And is this marshal willing to take on a baby, too?

4 Stars ~When Gracie's mobster ex-husband breaks out of jail before his trial, she's assigned a U.S. Marshal to protect her. Gracie's on her way to San Francisco to compete in a culinary competition that winning would set her up with enough funds to start a new restaurant for her and her unborn daughter. Marshal Beau wants to keep Gracie in Portland in a safe house, so she's given no choice but to run, and she gives him a mighty fine chase. But on her tail is also her ex's goons, armed and ordered to kill. Until the bullets started to fly, Gracie hadn't really believed she was in danger, and when Beau is wounded, she's almost ready to admit defeat.

Beau's got to admire Gracie's determination. He knows she's a talented chef and that the competition is her ticket to providing a good start for her baby. Convincing his boss that the Team can protect her in San Francisco, he gives in to her determination. Now, with hitmen on their trail and the challenge of a highly publicized event to make secure, Beau's fighting his own growing attraction to the feisty dynamo. At eight months pregnant Gracie hasn't felt like a desirable woman, but the way Beau looks at her and the way she keeps noticing his glorious bod, she wonders what it would be like to belong to this brave man. Unable to deny their growing attraction, Beau risks his career by giving in to Gracie's needs. He's willing to give it all up for Gracie, counting on a future with her and the baby once the danger's past, only Gracie's already announced she's going back to her family in Georgia to start her life over again.

This story begins with Gracie eluding Beau, and the exciting chase she leads him on. Eventually the pacing has to slow down, which gives these two time to explore their feelings for each other. Both worry that what they feel is just temporary because of the danger they've been thrown into, but neither have the strength to stay at arms length. Beau's been hurt in the past, and his family worry that he's using Gracie to fill that empty spot. While their's is a speedy romance, their love is believable. This is actually the third story in a four part series, and can easily be read as a stand alone. The connection to the past stories comes about two thirds into the story when Beau's entire family descends on him, all are U.S. Marshals and all are now on Gracie's protective team. I'm looking forward to reading the others in the series.
