I know this book was about Steve Babineau, his photography and history with the Bruins, but I just loved reading about the Bruins I have always loved. From back in the day to the 90's, it was so great to reread the history of the greats that I miss so much. When I first started to watch hockey in the late 70's it was Terry O'Reilly that I couldn't stop watching, but then after witnessing a complete bloodbath of a game (I was about 10-11 years old), I became a little "sensitive" to seeing teeth fall out and noses smooshing beneath fists. I stopped watching until the late 80'/early 90's. I remember the first game I watched like it was yesterday. I saw this player who skated in a very unique way. I could find him no matter where he was on the ice because of the way he skated, and the way he checked the opposition like he was a runaway freight train. It was beautiful, and then I saw he could score too!!! The quintessential Bruin if I have ever seen one. That very first game back into the hockey world and I found my most favorite of all Bruins, of all athletes: Cam Neely. I have missed watching him so much since he had to retire before his time. I also loved reading about Ray Bourque, and have been able to watch his sons play in the AHL (which makes me feel kind of old, really). The photography was great, as well as the stories Mr. Babineau told of his often hilarious interaction with the players.
When I look at the cover of this book, all I hear is Ken Casey and the Dropkick Murphys: “Go Go Black and Gold! Old time hockey, bar the door!…Light the lamp, throw a hit. Black and Gold never quit!”*
In Black and Gold, Four Decades of the Boston Bruins in Photographs, Steve Babineau and Rob Simpson captured the enthusiasm of Bruins fans. This is the second edition of Black and Gold, recently updated from the 2008 version to include the B’s recent playoff runs as well as their 2010-11 Stanley Cup run...
Although described as book in photographs, this is one of the rare books that delivers with both fabulous photography (from the gifted Steve Babineau) and accompanying text that is really complementary. I am greatly enjoying it, and recommend to any hockey fan.
I gave this 5 stars because I gave the first edition 5 stars, but I'm really glad I didn't buy this book. It is exactly the same as the first, except for two new chapters added to the end!
