Burke Hedges is an extremely well known Author, speaker, and trainer in the Network Marketing industry. He wrote “Who Stole the American Dream” which was the #1 selling book in the entire history of Amway.
Amazing!!! I loved this book, it may not seem like such a big deal to some but those that know the power of reading will understand, and those that don't will learn! Easy read, lots of quotes, motivating. I really enjoyed it!
I really salute the author, Burke Hedges, for writing such an interesting and informative book on the subject of Reading in a simple yet a compelling way. I am so impressed with the book that I feel if it would have my first book, since I started reading, I would have tripled the books, I have read till now both in quality and quantity. It has all the answers in words, that I always wanted to give to my non-reader friends, when they hit me with questions on why to read? Though, I always knew the answer but never found the right words. But, thanks to this book, I am eagerly waiting someone to put a question on my reading, now. This book offers a brilliant insights on why to read, how to read and even what to read as it mentions a number of great books that helped over a million of people in this world to find their way to riches and hence it offers you a list of number of great books to build up your next TBR- pile. Also, the book has a lot of wonderful quotes explained with real life stories and proven facts, on why one must read his way to riches. Reading and writing are single (without any substitute) tool to survive and win in this Information age. The one who knows reading, but doesn't read is no different from one who doesn't know reading, as simple as that. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and of course whenever I will mention the list of the books that changed my life, this book would be one in the list.
This book deals with books and the power and importance of reading. There are stated examples of various persons including the famous ones who improved their life thanks to reading books especially those non-fiction from the area of personal development. I enjoyed reading this book. It is motivating and is worth reading.
My mother is easy to talk to; she did not need this book to understand reading's benefits. My father on the other hand, weather stubborn or strong willed, is not open to ideas/change: 'His way or the highway.' And so, I was astonished to find "Read & Grow Rich" on his couch today. The star-rating for this review is a symbol of how well my dad took to reading.
I try to recognize the author's ideal audience when pre-reading. This is for people who really do not read. Hedges put his, "How to Read a Book" chapter, as far back as chapter four, because of his audience. (I know one premise is not ideal to make this claim, but it is good enough for me.) His audience is mostly those who really don't read. The book is justified by fulfilling its purpose to its audience.
...the workers who take advantage of reading will out-perform non-readers virtually every time. ~ Burke Hedges, "Read and Get Rich", p. 45
This book lists the values of reading and how it can enrich your life. Reading can enrich you not only financially, but relationally, spiritually, mentally, etc.
This book will encourage you to read more and if you are already a voracious reader, it will encourage you to keep reading and making your life more abundant.
A little simple. Good for some basic principles. Not super deep. Has some really good info about reading. It would be incredible for someone who is not an avid reader. Maybe it could convince them why they should be a reader.
I am a bibliophile and a voracious reader. A book about books or reading is something i will never miss. Interestingly the book has just too many quotations than usual. For a slightly longer review: http://rajshankar.wordpress.com/2012/...
This was a great book which discusses how important reading is to our society. The quotes about books and reading are marvelous. The drawback to the book is that it has now become pretty dated in parts. The internet was not quite the huge influence on our society as it is today, Most comments about why reading is different than other forms of media are still spot on, however.
The author has done a good job in epitomizing the benefits of reading a book . It a short and quick book to read... although little old ... I came across so many new books which I haven't heard of..
Had to stop at the 50% mark. Started off really great–fresh writing and original concept. But the halt starts at about the 30% mark and never quite picks up again.
Loved the way author organized the book, the use of the word self-imposed illiteracy and the way he mentioned about how to read a book. Everyone should take a step to make people aware of that word and make them read books. I think the author need to update the book for this generation.
This book focuses on the power of reading and how the impact of reading just that one right book can dramatically affect your future and life making you richer than you had ever been before. "Every reader has experienced special moments like these when we're instantly transformed by the written word. Those moments of insight wake us from our slumber of self-contentment and push us to grow, much like a plant bursting through the darkness of the soil and stretching toward the sunlight." I like the following quote too. "Personal growth books tell us who we can become before we become it. They give us hope. They stir our imagination. They inspire us to take action. They make us stretch ourselves. They plant the seeds that grow and blossom into our dreams. They challenge us to live up to our full potential. In short, they empower us to change...to get better...to get rich." A nice read for a librarian and for those who want to encourage others to read!
This is where it all started. A book that you have to read that dispenses all the benefits of a lifetime spent reading? The very concept itself is never explained to young minds but I picked this one off of my father's bookshelf myself because I wanted the author to explain the timely cost-benefit tradeoff and what such a skill has to offer in terms of education compared to the many alternatives young people have in spending their time. This is the kind of book that sets the bar, the standard for all else to come. This book may have actually saved my life but I will not get into all of those hypotheticals about where else I could have been if not for this sole introductory text... Read it for yourself and then give it to a kid who doesn't read, you will not be disappointed...
I expected so much more!! There...I said it! Hmmmm..I really wanted to "hear" more from the author than just - READING IS GOOD! I mean, ok...I know reading is good (such a stupid thing to say on GR:) Obviously we all here practically LIVE for the books). There were some examples of how reading improves the quality of our living, but that's not significant to write a whole book on this topic. So now you ask...why am I giving 2 stars a book which obviously I didn't like...Well, maybe (just maybe) it will help people read more (and I mean help those that HATE reading).
Somewhat simplistic, but points out that reading can help one to find success. One idea that I took from the book is that someone can live 50+ years, (or however long) and share the concepts they have learned in a book that takes anywhere from a day to a week (or more) to read. Think of the knowledge one can get and the time savings in learning that lesson available in the book, without having to go through a lifetime to learn the lesson by oneself.
This whole book consists of reading about reading. Gave some pointless statistics with personal opinions and assumotions also. The only good I got out of this book is Burke Hedges constantly talking about other authors and books I should look into, and basically read instead of this book. Highly dissapointed short book yet not worth reading. Sorry if you say otherwise or if I offended any fans of this book/author.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a great reminder in many ways of why reading is so important and worthwhile. It's an excellent book to read if you aren't already a dedicated reader but would like to become one.
Burke Hedges has the unique ability to write a book that is short, simple to read, and yet full of powerful information. Nothing else to say, read it and start getting rich in so many areas more important than material wealth!
It's a good summary of books to read, and why reading is important for success in life. The arguments are relatable and are convincing due to the evidence given.
It's a well written book that should convince anybody that is not a "book reader" to get into reading books everyday.
Interesting book that supports the idea that reading books is a special exercise which benefits the reader in every aspect of life. Reading is not idle pleasure.
