I just cannot say more good things about this manga. There are just so many ways I can say it. I love the storyline, and I love everything about it.

The whole onii-san & Tsukimi love subplot would be cuter if they could actually... you know... share more than 5 awkward words together in 8 books!

(This review is for the first eight volumes of this series:)

I really enjoyed the anime of this series and was pretty sad when I heard they weren’t making more than just one season. The manga goes further into the characters that are introduced in the anime.

Tsukimi, 18, is our nerdy heroine who loves jellyfish; she’s a totally devoted jelly otaku. She moves in with four other otaku young women- Chieko, Mayaya, Banba, and Jiji- who live in a house where they have banned men and any stylish women. One day Tsukimi befriends Kuranosuke, who also dresses as woman (he later takes the name Kurako when facing Tsukimi’s other friends) and changes Tsukimi’s life forever. After befriending Kuranosuke, Tsukimi and her otaku friends have to fight for their old house which is being eyed by some eager land developers who want to turn their whole neighborhood into a sky scraper. Kuranosuke helps Tsukimi save her home by launching a high-end clothing brand Jelly Fish where they make dresses based on the appearance of various species of jelly fish.

There’s a subplot with Inari, the real estate lady, who’s character is pretty despicable. She basically tries to seduce Kuranosuke’s older brother, Shu, who is a politician and absolutely clueless about women even though he’s thirty. He’s kind of dumb which works against Inari since she keeps trying to seduce him. Shu’s family who is entrenched in local politics, afraid of scandal, basically force him to date her even though he doesn’t even like her. I didn’t really like this part of the story. It’s not as funny (or really funny at all) compared to the parts of the story with Tsukimi, Kuranosuke, and the Otaku girls.

I am also in agreement with many other readers on Good Reads that I prefer the shipping of Kuranosuke/Tsukimi to Shu/Tsukimi, though for some reason Tsukimi and Shu look like they’re going to be cannon.

Kuranosuke likes Tsukimi whether or not she’s stylish while in order to get Shu’s attention at all, Tsukimi has to be dressed up fashionably. He won’t even recognize her if she isn’t, which is very superficial. He gets a bit better later in the series but this bothered me for the first five or so volumes that he wasn’t able to recognize Tsukimi as the girl he supposedly loves. I didn’t like that.

Also their age difference: 18 (Tsukimi) and 30 (Shu). I’m not so sure about that. I’m 24 and 30 still seems old, personally. Though I’ve learned that age differences like that in Japan are more culturally acceptable. I’ve seen that happen in other anime and manga series as well as on Japanese TV shows where the couples have a wide age gap. For example, one of the couples from Terrace House was 18 and 29 and it didn’t seem to bother the TV panel. Kuranosuke and Tsukimi are about the same age and genuinely like each other/ feel comfortable in each other’s company. I feel like their romance wouldn’t feel as forced since they both already can talk to one another. But I could be wrong and the story could end in a completely different way. I don’t know how it ends since I’m only about half way done now. I’ll post another review when I finish the book series too.

I would suggest this series if you like shojo mangas like Ouran High School Host Club. 4 stars so far overall- I think I rated each of the first eight volumes at four stars. I really enjoy the Otaku girls, Tsukimi, and Kuranosuke’s interactions through out the series. I like that these characters are different from the typical shojo heroines that I’m used to. I could relate to them too, being a bit of an outcast myself. Some of their conversations are even weird for me so I can appreciate the eccentric humor that is offered here.

2.5 stars maybe?

I'm starting to lose my interest in this series. I know the building of the brand is the main story arc but NOTHING is happening. No character developments, nothing new with any of the relationships it's all the same and going absolutely no where. It's pretty repetitive and I'm finding myself growing bored with the series as I am reading it.

This feels like a re-building book after the end of the fashion show arc. We are introducing new characters and new directions to move into. Shu's villainous "girlfriend" doesn't show up at all, so Shu can grow a bit and can actually have conversations with Tsukimi. It's noticeably duller. Tries to cover the blah-ness with lots of screaming and high kicks from Mayaya, which is neither funny nor entertaining. Don't know why Mayaya has changed from constantly having her hands infront of her face to toe-pointing ballerina leaps. Is it supposed to be character growth (it's more model-like?) or does the author find it funnier? Whatever. (Mayaya is still hands-down my least favorite character by a mile.)

I don't know if this is supposed to be a love triangle or quadrangle, but I am not rooting IN ANY WAY for Tsukimi to be with big brother Shu. Not a bit. I keep wondering what Tsukimi SEES in him, other than he is a man that will talk to her. He is a real drip. In a love triangle, you should have a favorite, sure, but you should still feel for the POSSIBLITY of both couples. Otherwise, half of the romantic scenes fall totally flat. In this book, they completely abandon the idea that our main designers are into each other at all. Boooo.

This is an adorable manga! I have read it through several times. I've watched the anime and the live action versions.
If you love shojo manga, you'll love Princess Jellyfish.

I really do love this series, truly; I just wasn't feeling it in this volume. It was mostly about sewing and choosing fabrics; I could empathize with the Amars, since I feel awkward around anything that isn't a t-shirt and jeans, and my sewing skills are non-existent, but that was all that happened. I love this series for the relatable dorks; they're adult women who happen to be clumsy around anything fashionable, nervous of pretty girls, and petrified of speaking to guys in any context. Sadly, I only got the clumsy around fashion bits, and it just wasn't enough. I'm still going to read the heck out of this series, though.

Note: I actually read from the North American, English-language omnibus edition (comprising volumes 7 and 8).
