About the author

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

একটা কমন কুইজ টাইপের খেলা প্রায়ই হয় পড়ুয়া গোছের লোকজনদের নিয়ে। আমি, আমরাও খেলতাম।।
-- 'নির্বাসনে যাবার সময় কোন বইটি সংগে নিতে চাইবেন?'
অবধারিতভাবেই আমার উত্তর হতো -- গীতবিতান।

সত্যিই যখন একবার নির্বাসনে যাবার সময় এলো, তখন কঠিনতম কাজ ছিল বইভরা ক্ষুদে শেলফ দুটোর মধ্যে থেকে সঙ্গী হিসেবে সবচেয়ে প্রিয় ক'জনকে বেছে নেয়া। অবশ্যম্ভাবীভাবেই সেগুলোর মধ্যে শীর্ষে ছিল ঐখানাই।
ভারজনিত বেদনায় পুঁটুলি থেকে বন্দরেই যখন তাদের ছেড়ে যেতে হলো, বেদনাহতের অনুভূতি ছিল বর্ণনাতীত।

আর্ন্তজাল বড় ভাল জায়গা, সহজেই প্রায় সবই মেলে। কাগজের বইয়ের অভাব ভোলায় ই-বুক।
জীবন যখন শুকায়ে যায় করুণাধারায় এসে বাঙালীর প্রার্থনায়, প্রেমে, বিরহে সত্য মিথ্যা সকলি ভুলায়ে দিয়ে আশ্বাসে, অন্তর্মুখে,আত্মবোধনে, জাগরণে, নিঃসংশয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আমার মেঘলা গানের বাদল-অন্ধকারে
আনন্দে ভাসান ঐ এক জন। সাধক হয়ে উৎসবে,আনন্দের অফুরান খনি হয়ে বাউল গায়কের মতো
পথ হতে সেপথে, শেষ থেকে ফের শুরু করতে বিশ্বের সমস্ত কিছু কেমন করে লিখে গিয়েছিলেন ঐ এক জন মানুষ!
রক্তমাংসের মানুষ-ই ছিলেন তো, নাকি? মাঝে মাঝে ঘোর সন্দেহ হয়।

'কাজ কী আমার মন্দিরেতে আনাগোনায়../ পাতব আসন আপন মনের একটি কোণায়,
সরল প্রাণে নীরব হয়ে তোমায় ডাকি।'

যা হারিয়ে যায় তা আগলে ব'সে রইব কত আর?
বই হারাতে পারে, ক্যাসেটের ফিতে যেতে পারে প্যাঁচিয়ে, সিডিতে পড়তে পারে স্ক্র্যাচ..
বাঙালির মন থেকে রবি বুড়ো আর তার গান কী আর কখনো হারায়? :-)

পথ চলতে গিয়ে হঠাৎ দেখি, পাশেই গাছের পাতাগুলো পড়ে আছে মাটিতে, শেকড়ও হয়েছে দুর্বল। চমকে উঠে যাপিত সময়ের সাথে নিদারুণ মিল খুঁজে পাই যেন! তখন তিনি আবির্ভূত হয়ে জানান সেইসব ছিন্ন পাতায় তরণী সাজানোর আহ্বান। পরিজনদের প্রচণ্ড গ্ল্যামারাস চাওয়াগুলোর ভিড়ে দম আটকে আসলে হৃদয়মাঝে তাঁর বাণীতে ডাক পাই-বিজন ঘরে বসে আত্মসন্ধানের, কিংবা এক ঝলক শান্তির। তাঁকে জাদুকর বলে ভ্রম হয় মাঝে মাঝে। বিশ্বজোড়া মানবমানবীর প্রেমে-বিরহে, আত্মসন্ধানে, নিরাশায়, উৎসবে, আনন্দে কিংবা ঘোর দুশ্চিন্তায় কেবল ওই একজনের আশ্রয়ে কীভাবে সকলকিছু ভুলে থাকা, সে-ও কি সম্ভব? এই গ্রন্থকে তাই ম্যাজিক-বই বললে খুব ভুল হবে না।

রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রতি অবসেশনকে দূরে রেখেও বলতে পারি, বিশ্বসেরা ১০০ বইয়ের তালিকায় স্থান নেবার যোগ্য এই গ্রন্থ।

ঠাকুরের আরেকটা বই সময় লাগিয়ে শেষ করলাম। কী আর বলিব আইজ্ঞা! সুরের আগুন সবখানে লাগিলো।

The book of all books. You know you are Bengali when you grew up reading and memorizing this. Other people have their Quran, Bible, Torah and so on. I have my Gitabitan; this is my holy scripture. :)

The book forms a collection of all songs written by Rabindranath Tagore and is called 'Gitabitan' meaning "Garden of songs". It contains an important part of currently-extant historical materials pertaining to Bengali musical expression. The six major parts of this book are Puja (worship), Prem (love), Prakriti (Nature) and Bichitra (Diverse), Swadesh (Patriotism) and Aanushthanik (Celebration).

আমার গীতবিতান পড়ার পেছনে ছোট্ট একটা গল্প আছে। সমারেশ মজুমদারের কালপুরুষ পড়ার সময় উপন্যাসের দুজন চরিত্রের মধ্যে গীতবিতান নিয়ে কথা হয়। ঐ কথপোকথন পড়েই আমার মনে হল, আমার দূর্ভাগ্য আমি এখনও 'গীতবিতান' পড়িনী। পড়ে শুরু করলাম। এখন মনে হয়- হৃদয়ের প্রতিটি সংকোচন-প্রসারণে যে শব্দটি উৎপন্ন হয় তার নাম 'গীতবিতান'।

পুরোটা এখন শেষ করতে পারিনি কিন্তু প্রতিবার ই নতুন করে পড়তে মন চায়। এই লকডাউনের মাঝে সবথেকে উপভোগ করার মতো একজন সঙ্গী। মেমসাহেব এবং কালবেলা বইতে গীতবিতান নিয়ে কিছু আলাপ ছিল সেই থেকে পড়ার ইচ্ছা অবশেষে হাতে নিলাম। এত অসম্ভব মনোমুগ্ধকর হতে পারে ভাবি নি। রবীন্দ্রপ্রেমীদের কাছে গীতবিতান অন্যরকম এক সৌন্দর্য। বইয়ের প্রতিটা পাতায়, প্রতিটা শব্দে যেন হারিয়ে যাচ্ছি।
