Teaches people with physical disabilities to train their dogs in basic obedience as a foundation for service dog training! Easy to read and follow with the emphasis on positive attitude, praise and food reward, explains equipment for the novice handler and makes it very clear that people with disabilities can train their own dogs to be better behaved friends and companions. Explores canine behavior and behavior problems, including recognizing, preventing and correcting them.
I am training my own service dog and this book has been so beneficial! My Jazzy accomplished her original service skills to be my balancing 3rd leg. But then I lost the use of my legs but am now able to walk some with a walker so "retraning" is our goal. I learned new approaches to old skills and feel encouraged to undertake our next steps.
A book that is very much of its time, it's fascinating to see how our knowledge of effective dog training has shifted in the last 20 years. While many of the methods it uses are outdated now, they were progressive for the time, and offers disability-inclusive training alternatives that I don't think I've seen anywhere else.
This is a should read for anyone who's looking to have a well behaved dog, abled and disabled alike. I purchased the pair of ebooks with the intention of preparing my dog for service work since I was finding myself in need of a companion out in public to ease my anxiety and ward off attacks. These were the best rated I found on service dogs and the only books that actually taught training. I've read many training books in general, the subject one of my passions, but this one had a couple commands I'd never thought to include in basic obedience.
This is the "Bible" for disabled people training their own Service Dog; can't be without a copy for long. I've given away 3 of these; mostly I try to loan them.
Excellent books for anyone interested in training their own Assistance Dog. Bought both Teamwork I & II when they first became available. A big boost to understanding & working with dogs.
