This is really a multigenerational saga of a group of pioneers in the Ohio Valley during the period from about 1770 to 1825. It involves a number of historical characters and battles (esp. during Revolutionary War and the War of 1812). Much is centered in southwestern OH (e.g. the founding and early history of Cincinnati), so it is thus of some personal interest. Several of the characters are fairly interesting and mostly not overly stereotyped. Some of the events are the same as those recored in various novels by Kenneth Roberts (one of my favorites). Not quite up to KR's standards, but not too bad.
I am surprised this book is not better known! Excellent historic novel with an amazing amount of accurate historic detail! And though it started a bit slow for my taste, it became a fascinating read with interesting believable characters. I truly enjoyed Nalambigi Chesney, the Indian wife of Robert Chesney who participated in the Revolution alongside her husband and grew to detest the English throughout her life with an acid hatred! The Chesneys founded a city and Nalambigi became a very successful businesswoman, respected by all, while Robert sought adventure across what was then the untamed west. Really good book, with lots of insight into the times. A definite recommendation for all readers!
