I finally got around to reading this pleasing novella, written 50 years ago now and set in my home island of Jersey. It is a modern day (well 1974-modern) take on an old legend concerning wreckers on the treacherous south-west coast of the island, long before Corbiere lighthouse was constructed. The writing is pitched at a level an older child would enjoy but, as you can see, an older adult can read it with enjoyment too. I'm not sure if timeslips were in vogue in 1974 but the author jumps straight in with a reprise of a 15th century drama/tragedy, seen only by young visitor Andrew. The mystery unfolds on the day of the rare 'ormering tide' when the revenge part of the legend plays out in front of Andrew's eyes. I should perhaps have twigged the role that fisherman Antoine plays in the mystery, but also the lively, strange Maria, the holiday companion of Andrew, who leaves him for another dimension on the Spanish ship. An excellent little read.

Well this short book has taken me pleasantly by surprise. When I first started reading it I thought it was okay and not particularly well written but as the story progressed it captivated me. Its an excellent mystery with great characters and plot. I could imagine it all happening as I read it and I was very intrigued indeed. I would love to read something else by the same author.
