READ THIS BOOK MANY YEARS AGO!

I had a hard time believing the heroine and the hero was a selfish asshole. He just wants it all but doesn't want to work for it and own up to his mistakes.

They both needed a dose of reality and the whole dad and mistress situation....

Read at your own risk but just know that this book is filled with trills and spills and other people drama.

I could have loved this despite the creepy dysfunctional family of the H. Very sad to think that his own father hated him enough to want to marry a woman he had cared for and had a child with. But, some families have some twisted dynamics. I could get past that. Life ain't a fairy tale. Some families suck.

I could also buy that the heroine would agree to the marriage with her child's grandfather under the circumstances. It was kinda creepy, yes, but the guy wasn't a doddering ancient AND the heroine was doing it for her child who needed a kidney transplant from a suitable donor - which the grandfather agreed to be in exchange for marriage. I'd think many parents would bargain with the devil himself to save their child.

That scenario aside, it was the heroine who bugged me here.

(REVISED REVIEW)

For the Love of Sara isn’t one of Anne Mather's bests. It features a rather unlikeable hero, which is par for the course for Mather. He’s named--pompously enough--Joel Kingdom. It doesn’t help that he’s a functioning alcoholic who keeps cans of beer in his glove compartment to help him deal with stress.

Plus, Joel has horrible fashion sense. He’s one of those cheroot-smoking males so prevalent in Mather’s books. He shows off his vintage 70’s wardrobe, wears silk shirts open down to his waist, revealing his hairy, medallioned chest. He decks out in maroon velvet tuxedos, lots of tight-fitting corduroy bell-bottoms, and even a sexy matching blue suede suit.

 photo blue suede jacket.jpg

Joel Kingdom is a successful artist from a highborn, wealthy family. His father disowned him when he refused to go into the family banking business.

The heroine, Rachel Gilmour, isn’t any better. She’s a professional martyr who’s made a lot of poor life decisions. When the book opens, she’s about to embark on another bad choice, but in this case, she’s doing it to save someone she cares for.

Joel’s younger half-brother is concerned he may get written out of their father’s will. Their elderly father is about hop into a third marriage, this time with Rachel.

The kink in the ironworks is that Rachel and Joel had a brief affair several years back. Joel taught art, and Rachel was one of his young students. The fling ended rather abruptly when Rachel thought they had a serious relationship after making love. Joel, for his part, was not ready for anything long-term but was willing to cohabitate. Rachel, who had been a virgin, wanted a lifetime commitment or nothing, so she left him.

Joel is gobsmacked to hear that his father plans to marry his former girlfriend. He finds that Rachel works as a maid for an aged Colonel and seeks her out. What he discovers shocks him. Rachel has a six-year-old daughter named Sara. At first, Rachel tries to convince Joel she’s a widow, then she concedes that Rachel is the result of their one night together.

Because Joel had been so adamant that he was unready for marriage and family life, Rachel didn’t turn to him. Instead, she went to his father, asking for money for an abortion. Of course, she planned for no such thing but needed some income to help her get on her feet until she could find gainful employment.

Rachel reveals she is marrying Joel’s father because he has the financial resources to help Sara, who has a fatal blood-borne disease. Joel is determined to put a stop to this. He never abandoned his child and wants to be in her life now.

However, Rachel’s bitterness regarding Joel’s refusal to marry her in the past controls much of her emotions. She’ll marry James Kingdom, and that’s that.

Joel’s father wants revenge upon his son for refusing to be a part of the family business.

Joel has another woman in his life, but his attraction to Rachel never died out. Now that he knows they share a daughter, he pursues her, intending to marry. Even so, Rachel is irrationally stubborn. What will it take to get these two together?

Rachel was a tough character to understand. Her pride was so great; she refused to do what was best for her daughter. Instead, she made a bad situation worse.

Joel didn’t abandon Rachel in her time of need. He simply declared at 28, he wasn’t ready for marriage. That didn’t mean he would have tossed Rachel and his child aside. Rachel really needed to have a deep heart-to-heart with Joel before throwing in the towel and leaving him.

The problem in For the Love of Sara is one so common in romances: a major lack of communication.

These were two people who–in the present time–wanted each other and had a daughter who needed stability. Joel had more than enough money to pay for Sara’s medical bills. Joel was a bit of a player but compared to Rachel’s stupid idea of marrying her daughter’s grandfather (which wouldn’t have been a marriage of convenience, but a real marriage!), displayed a lack of common sense and pettiness I couldn’t get over.

Mather’s prose is always engaging, but this book was a dud.

The hero and heroine had a prior relationship, when the heroine brought up marriage, the hero and heroine fought. Eventually the heroine left, only months later finding out she was pregnant.

The heroines daughter has kidney disease and the heroes father has offered to marry her for a kidney. When the hero finds out about his daughter and the disease, he's out to change things for the better. He realizes his mistake at letting the heroine go. He wants the heroine and their daughter to have a happily ever after and no one, especially his father and former mistress are going to stop him.

It was just an okay read, a lot of it was crap.

Let’s get the Icky Factor out of the way: the heroine is set to marry the grandfather of her sick child in exchange for one of his kidneys.

Six years ago, Rachel had an affair with Joel but walked away when marriage didn’t figure in his immediate future plans for them. She then found out that she was pregnant but didn’t bother to contact Joel as he didn’t want babies. But now that he discovered estranged father’s plan to marry her and that she bore him a daughter after that affair, he wants to win her back.

The obligatory melodrama for the heroine: trying to escape him but falls down the stairs. Emergency brain operation required to stop cerebral hemorrhage.

The obligatory groveling for the hero: stopping her from running away for the 3rd time and asking her to forgive him for the past rejection of her.

In retrospect, he wasn’t really a jerk back then. He didn’t want to settle down in marriage because he wanted to pursue his artistic ambitions. And she wasn’t really a doormat except with the grandfather of her child.

The hero was a douchebag. When he wouldn't commit to her five years before, he was already 30 years old. No one was likable in this book. Not even the little girl. If the grandfather wasn't so ruthless, this book would've been even more boring. And for wanting to marry the heroine from the moment they saw each other again, he sure did take his time ending things with his mistress. Like I said, douchebag.

2.5 stars. Decent enough story. Lots from the hero's POV which was interesting. The ending killed me though. The heroine pulls one of those stunts where she makes life altering decisions with one-tenth of the needed info. Aggravating.

Um let see, this is one of those books where I had to imagine my own story because I couldn't relate to the one written.
Rachel is so messed up I hated her from the start.
Joel selfish and stupid with it
James he would not win a father of the year award.
Sara can't picture a five year old talking this way
And whatever happened to Francis?
I just wasted my time with this book please don't waste yours!

The drama Llama was all up in this book!

It was like a soap opera ... or a bad Jerry Springer/Maury Povich episode.

Rachel met and fell in love with Joel while in college. After a night of hotness, she expects to get a marriage proposal and runs off when she doesn't. Weeks later she learns that she's pregnant and hides this fact from Joel.

Five years later Joel learns that Rachel is planning on marrying his father, James - icky icky icky! Her daughter Sara is very ill and James, the grandfather, bribes Rachel into agreeing to his marriage plans by bargaining with his granddaughter's life!

When Joel reappears in her life, idiot Rachel tries to keep her daughter and the child's illness from him. Needless to say Joel is pissed. He soon realizes the truth and does what he has to to rectify the situation.

Rachel is the most annoying h I have come across in a long time. All of Joel's attempts to explain, apologize, and redeem himself are met with disdain. She doesn't give him a chance. That she is willing to marry her child's grandfather is weird and disturbing - especially when the old dude is talking about her having another son for him! Ewwwwww!!

I loved the drama of the book. It kept me up readinJames and Rachel - gross and annoying. And while I couldn't stand Joel at first, after a while I was absolutely "Team Joel" all the way.

Don't know if I'd read this one again because of the ick factor, but the story was a good one. Ps... love the OTT book cover! So 1970's! Lol

Eeewwww, yet another love story based on incest. Anne Mather, do you get sadistic pleasure seeing us readers squirm in our seats reading these borderline offensive tales ? You meanie :(

Rachel has a one night stand with her prof, gets pregnant. He is not serious about the relationship, not that he treats her as 'use and throw'. He is just not serious enough to contemplate marriage. She is of course all starry eyed. When he turns down the idea of marriage, she storms out in a fit of rage.

She gets pregnant, but doesn't inform the guy. Goes to his dad instead. The dad and son apparently are bitter adversaries. So daddy dear never lets the son know of the pregnancy business, just offers to pay the girl off.

The girl brings up the kid faithfully, works as some old man's housekeeper. The kiddo is terminally ill, so the heroine goes back to daddy dear. This time the old man proposes a preposterous idea. He tells the mother of his grand child to marry him instead ! And the best of it all is that she agrees !!!!!!!!!!!

So whats the deal, what does she get in return ? The old man's kidney for the dying child. Really Anne Mather !?!??!?! If your goal was to throw us readers into a dizzy fit, you managed spectacularly !!!

The hero suddenly gets to know about the brilliant bargain and all hell breaks loose. Talking to daddy dear doesn't work, they are enemies you see. Don't ask why, the author doesn't explain.

So his only hope is to coax the heroine to grow a brain. Even that doesn't succeed much. For most of the book, she seems hell bent on daddy dear ! Yuck !

He tries some sexual coaxing, some money talk, marriage talk. Nothing works. So finally, he uses the ultimate weapon - his everlasting love for the heroine. That does the trick ! Thankfully, before the granddaddy tries out some physical moves on the girl himself, the author puts an end to reader's miseries.

'For the love of Sara' ***Another good read from the 1970's full of emotional angst. It seems like all male artists/painters have a hard time letting go of the easy sex and adoration from women to mature into a stable relationship. Not being able to express his love years ago when she needed the commitment; they end up having the fight of all fights and go their seperate ways. Their daughter Sara has kidney disease and the grandfather demands marriage as payment. In his own way the grandfather is trying to help as his beloved first wife died of this disease but he also likes to one up his son. The hero discovers their plans to marry and is deeply upset and jealous. He plans to stop the marriage and discovers his daughter; realizing that he loves his child and mother he vows to save them all. Our heroine can't forget the pain he caused years ago and now he has a mistress. More lies and misunderstandings keep them apart as they try to find the way back to each other. Still not learning from their mistakes they continue not to discuss things which leaves our heroine to make a hard choice and sacifice. Intense emotions run high throughout this book.

I loved those stories too much, that how I start reading, and really regardless to its common ideas but the way it wrote down, it makes you really feel the different feeling and cope as you are a part of the story.

The book is from 1975.

The h lost her virginity to the H 5 years before. She assumed that he would marry her, although they hardly knew each other. He wanted a relationship, but not marriage. So she ran away.

When she later found out she was pregnant, she assumed that he wouldn’t want the child, so she told him nothing. She went to his dad to get money for an abortion that she didn’t plan to have.

5 years later. The child needs a kidney transplant. The h agrees to marry the H’s father for one of his kindney’s. The h assumes that the H wouldn’t help her.

This h assumes a lot.

Anyway, I stopped reading when the H’s dad kissed her. That made my stomach turn.

What I most hated about the h was that she was too proud to ask the H for help for her child. The H offers her help immediately, but she refuses. She chooses the H’s dad to help her.

Unbelievable that she would rather marry and have sex with his dad for the rest of her life than accept help from the H. That’s just gross.

Oh dear oh dear

Both male character s were deeply unlikable. Who blackmailed the mother of their grandchild into marriage to save the child? Father of said child in an arrogant jerk frankly she would have been better off running away from both. But then again what mother considers leaving her child behind ?
