Kincaid Brides #3

Over the Edge

Rate this book
Seth Kincaid survived a fire in a cave, but he's never been the same. He was always a reckless youth, but now he's gone over the edge. He ran off to the Civil War and came back crazier than ever.

After the war, nearly dead from his injuries, it appears Seth got married. Oh, he's got a lot of excuses, but his wife isn't happy to find out Seth doesn't remember her. Callie has searched, prayed, and worried. Now she's come to the Kincaid family's ranch in Colorado to find her lost husband.

Callie isn't a long-suffering woman. Once she knows her husband is alive, she wants to kill him. She's not even close to forgiving him for abandoning her.

Then more trouble shows up in the form of a secret Seth's pa kept for years. The Kincaid brothers might lose their ranch if they can't sort things out. It's enough to drive a man insane—but somehow it's all making Seth see things more clearly. And now that he knows what he wants, no one better stand in his way.

This book is definitely my favorite of the three in this series. I enjoyed it very much!

UPDATE:

I noticed something this time around that I guess I didn't notice or pay attention to 4 years ago...
Why is there so much focus on Seth just wanting to get Callie into bed?? Yeah, I get that they're married & it's not bad for him to want that, but it seemed like most of the romance part of the story was focused on it! I would have enjoyed the story a lot more if the focus had been on other aspects of their relationship instead.

What to say about this book... well, for starters, I LOVED it!! Seriously, from the beginning pages until the end, I loved every moment!

It was great to get to read Seth's story and find out what made him the way he is. I found his wife, Callie, to be a new favorite character of mine - right along with other favorites from this series: Ethan, Seth, plus many more. :)

I loved the little surprises that were in Over the Edge (not going to say what they were, but if you read this book, I think you'll know what I'm talking about) and found myself grinning SO MUCH throughout the book. If you would have seen me when reading this book, you'd probably have laughed. :)

I think this is the last book in the Kincaid Brides series, which I find sad because I love these characters and do not want this to be the end... I'm hoping Mary Connealy will write more with them. :)

I most definitely recommend Over the Edge for older teens/adults, especially if you like historical romances. :)

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

This is my third book to read that was written by Mary Connealy...and I LOVED it!! I first heard about her Kincaid Brides series from a friend and got the first book Out of Control from our library and devoured it in a day. I loved it so much that I wanted to read the second book, In Too Deep, but unfortunately our library didn't have it. So I bought the kindle version of book number two so I could read it. Of course I loved it so much that when I saw the opportunity to review the third book, Over The Edge, I almost went nuts. :)

I can honestly say that this series is one of my all-time favorites! Mary Connealy just has a way of writing western novels that displays her obviously talent, and she just captures you with her books, leaving you wanting more! Over The Edge, was, in my opinion, the perfect third book to this series and I really hope that it's not the last since I don't want the story to end! Out of all three books in the series, I'd definitely say that without a doubt, Over The Edge was my favorite. Talk about a grand finale! I loved seeing more of Seth in this book and meeting Callie and the story was very well written and interesting! There was a lot of suspense, which all the Kincaid Bride books have a lot of, and I found it very hard to put down!

This book literally sucked me into the story from the first sentance! I'm serious! Take a look at the first sentance of the book and you'll see what I mean! "A bullet slammed through the door of the stagecoach, threading a needle to miss all four passengers." From that sentance on, I was hooked and fell in love with the story. I really enjoyed meeting Callie and Connor in this story and seeing what happens with Trixie and Jasper and loved how the story ended! The story-line was wonderful and I loved how all the events turned out! I also enjoyed seeing Trickie's story take place and seeing her desire a better life and workiong towards that goal. Her's was a great story showing how to turn your life around, even if you think it's too late.

One of the things I found most interesting about this story is how original it is. I have read several westerns, but never have I vome across one like this! I guess, after a while, books that are similar seem to mest in the story-line for me, but this was a story I'd never read before and loved it! I mean, you don't exactly read a story about a guy who got married, but doesn't remember it because he was so sick, and then his wife shows up after a couple months and he is a bit surprised since he doesn't really remember getting married in the first place. Oh, and Callie, she couldn't be any more original than it gets, I just hagve to point that out, even though anyone that has read the book knows exactly what I'm saying! :) Though I found her a bit to feministic for my liking, I did develope a love for that character and think the story wouldn't be near as good without her!

Due to the romance in this book, I'd probably only recommend this book to mature readers. Overall, I was very pleased with this book and would recommend it to mature ladies who like historical western fiction with lots of suspense. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Callie has been looking for her husband ever since he abandoned her. She heads to Colorado and finds herself in the middle of a shoot out. Seth shows up to help and she is mighty tempted to shoot him as well! Seth does not remember Callie but he sure wants to. He can’t remember when or where but he finds himself with a family. Now he wants to desperately dig his way out of his crazy ways and be the husband Callie wants but can she let go of the fact he left her and except the love he offers?

Mary Connealy does it again! Book three in the Kincaid Brides series ends this series with style. I have been looking forward to Seth's story way back when we meet him in book one. I was not disappointed!

What I liked: This book was awesome I read it in less then 24hrs! I love it when Mary opens her books in a full run. It hooks you from the first page and you just can’t slow down. Callie was such a fun character I loved her strength and whit. I also liked getting to know Seth and dig deeper into what made him loco. Throw in the comedy between the two and this is a 5+ star book!

What I did not like: Well not much other then the book ended and way to soon. Julia and her cave fascination got a little annoying. She went on enough in the first book about fossils so when she got some more page time in book three I wanted to tell her to shut up already! I would have liked to have know a little more about Heath. He kind of threw a monkey wrench into the storyline and now it does not feel finished like I expected.

Over all this was a great book just as I expected. I am sorry to see the series end but maybe we will see a new series dealing with Heath? It would be great to see these characters again and Mary is known for her series to overlap or pull past characters into her new books fingers crossed!

A fantastic conclusion to the series!
Seth grabbed my attention from the first book with his wild blue eyes and wandering ways. However, through this book, I fell even more in love with him. His vulnerability and wildness made him such an interesting character and it was so good to see his character growth. I also loved Callie, with her spunky and tough-as-nails attitude, that had extraordinary skill to back it up. The interactions between her and Seth were hilarious and at the same time heartwarming.
Plot-wise, I found this novel to be the most exciting, and it was so satisfying to see all the issues solved. I literally sat down and read it in one sitting.
Loved seeing all the familiar faces coming back (although Julia with her obsession with the fossils was super annoying! Callie summed up my feelings pretty well "She [Julia] really was a fanatic about the cavern" and "Callie was running slap out of patience").
I enjoyed every minute of reading this novel.
Overall, a super fun series!

This was a pretty good book, but it was saturated in sexual innuendo. That’s the main reason for the three-star rating and why I didn’t fully enjoy this story.

The adventure was fun. I was really glad to finally see what the treasure was that was hinted at throughout the first two books of the trilogy. I loved getting to know Callie, who was spunky, and watching Seth mature and remember more than he had previously. This was a good brothers story, and I liked how important family was to each of them.

The setting for the finale was absolutely perfect for this trilogy’s overarching themes. What a fantastic choice!

Content: sensuality, a man saw his wife topless before they knew each other very well (this felt awkward to me, as there was no courtship period for this couple), sexual innuendo (heavy), marital affairs mentioned, child out of wedlock

I don't think I've ever given an entire trilogy 5 stars before. But this one deserves it. No kidding. And the ending of this third book wraps everything up in a major sigh of satisfaction. Gotta love that! We meet Seth in book one, fall a little in love with him in book two, and learn who he really is here in book three. I love Mary Connealy's characters who aren't the "typical" story heroes. Seth is such a character. Read it. But read the other two first and you'll enjoy it that much more. (Ethan is still my favorite... but I liked them all!)

I have read one other book by Ms. Connealy; however, this one to me what better than the first one. It was very detailed, but not boring in the slightest and for most author's this is something that is difficult to pull off.

To be married to a man that has no memories of ever being married to you in the first place must have been a very difficult position to be in, but the heroine of the novel pulled it of pleasantly well with a baby in tow.

Even though this is only my second novel by this particular author, I am sure that you will not be disappointed if you chose her stories.

This was a well written and entertaining Christian romance novel with a large thread of suspense, which added depth to the plot. I enjoyed the character development as well, and it was nice to learn Seth's backstory and how he came across as on-and-off "crazy" in the first two books. Then, as usual for most of Mary Connealy's books, this one was rather unrealistic but funny a lot of the time. I'm glad that I finally read the rest of the Kincaid Brides trilogy as well as a few novellas that are connected to the series.

I love a Mary Connealy book! Let me just get that out in the open right now! Mary's flair for comedic romance is unparalleled. She also knows how to maintain interest from one book to the next in a series by continually deepening characterizations and weaving plot threads together with intricate precision.

This book wraps up the Kincaid Brides series with Seth's story. Seth is a character who, in the first two books, was haunted by a troubled past and definitely not always in his right mind. Naturally I wondered how Mary would bring out this character's heroic side by the time she featured him in his own book. As we learn more of Seth's backstory, we can't help but care about him even more, and he truly becomes a romantic hero in his own right.

In addition, the villain's storyline that began in book 1 is carried to completion in a very satisfying manner. What makes this series even more compelling is that now the stage has been set for supporting characters to come to life in yet another Connealy series, as Mary did so effectively with her Lassoed in Texas, Montana Marriages, and Sophie's Daughters books.

Which means, essentially, that once you start reading a Connealy book, you'll be hooked on all the rest!

4.5 stars.
Of course, I started the last book of this series first. Seems I just can't get all my series right-end-first, no matter how hard I try! I have a copy and started reading when loading down my new bookshelf.

I really enjoyed the story of Seth and Callie. While it didn't end up on an all-time-favorites list, it is actually one of the best written of Connealy's books that I've read yet. I especially enjoyed the part where Seth has the big show-down with the cave; the depth of emotions made me feel like I was right there watching it unfold. Great story!

Pretty good book. The heroine is like wonder-woman-tough. I liked how the writer dealt with PTSD in a western and I liked how she never forgot the baby. So often writers do.

This was a strong finale to the 'Kincaid Brides' trilogy.

I enjoyed this series immensely with its humor, real-life tragedies and challenges, strong marital and familial love and bonds, and a great setting.

I borrowed this book from the local public library.

How can you completely forget that you're married? Or that you have a son? Well that's exactly what is happening to Seth Kincaid, the youngest of the Kincaid brothers who suddenly finds himself at the scene of a stagecoach robbery. Only Seth is the one being shot at. When more men arrive from Colorado City with the sheriff, the learn that the only occupant remaining in the stagecoach is a woman, named Callie who was defending the coach against the robbers who already shot both the driver and his partner.

When Seth finds out the woman in the coach is his long-forgotten wife Callie, he immediately picks up right where he left off, carrying for her injuries and learning he has a son, Connor that was rescued by the parson when he left to go find help during the robbery. Now Callie is hailed as a hero by the town for saving the lives of the men from the stage coach but she only wants answers to why Seth left her and never came back. But Seth has been having many lapses in memory and that is why he is living on the land provided to him by the remaining Kincaid brothers, Rafe and Ethan in his own cabin. This way they can watch over him but still allow him to live an independent life.
Only what will they say when they learn that Seth has a family that has come calling for him?

In the Kincaid Bride Series by Mary Connealy, Over The Edge is the third novel that digs deeper into the lives of each of the Kincaid brothers with this one detailing Seth's life a little more. The brothers lives and those of their families still remain at stake when a man is still looking for them, Henry Jasper Duff who he believes has his money that was stolen by Wendell Gilliland. Now Jasper has had to live on the run hiding with his wife Bea, from those that he owes a great deal of money to from his opium trades. No matter how much Bea tries to convince him to forget the money, Jasper is just bidding his time until he can corner the brothers and get back what he believes belongs to him.

I received Over The Edge compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. Having read the previous two in this series, Out of Control and In Too Deep, I couldn't wait to read this one to get to know Seth Kincaid more. Having experiences PTSD from the Civil War, Seth at times has the mind of a much younger man who sees things in a much simpler format, being more spontaneous in his actions and a bit impulsive at times without thinking things through. He also suffers from horrible nightmares which Callie still remembers that border more on night terrors. I couldn't wait to see where the money has been hidden or if there is a stash of money since it has been the conflict that runs through the other two novels in the series and keeps the family's constantly looking over their shoulders for the next threat on their lives. I can easily rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and if you truly love a great Christian Western Romance with a touch of suspense added, then you will LOVE this series.

When Seth Kincaid was a child his favorite place to play was in the caverns. He almost lost his life and thought he lost his soul due to a fire in the cave. He has been haunted by this near death experience ever since then. Now as an adult he has many scars especially after the Civil War.
The most noticeable is his mental scars that cause night terrors not just about the war but from that terrible day in his childhood when he caught fire in the cavern.

Callie Kincaid is in route to the Kincaid Ranch to seek what is due her sixteen month old son, Connonr's birthright. As son of Seth Kincaid, a father he has yet too meet, his Uncles can provide Connor a safe home and just maybe tell his mother where her absentee, no good skunk of a husband has got off to so she can fill him with holes. It has not been an easy haul going from Texas to Colorado with a baby in tow.

When Callie finally gets connected with her husband she let's him know real quick at the end of her rifle that she wants him to pay for abandoning her and their son when they needed him the most.

Seth is determined to prove to Callie he can be trusted to be there for her and his precious son. He had a very good excuse for not being there in the past. The problem is he can't really remember her but he recognized the feeling of love and concern he has for this woman that is his wife.

The older two brother's definitely had there issues mentally concerning the accident in the cave. Each of the boys felt like the accident was their fault and not that of the other brothers. Then to be abandoned by the death of the frequent absences of their father and the death of their mother left them with no one to lean on other than their brothers. They definitely needed to unburden unto God their guilt and grief over that day for He is their true Father.

I hope there will be another book to this series maybe about Heath. He seems to be the most level headed of all the brothers. But he will have to get a little older before any woman decides to rope him into marriage.

I have decided Mary Conneally is currently my favorite author. She managed to put her all into what it takes to write a humorous, romantic and adventurous fun novel that kept me up laughing and crying until I finished reading the whole book. I have all daughters and love them to pieces but I fail in love with this motherless son, Seth Kincaid. My heart broke for him and all of his scars physically and mentally.

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

If you've been reading the Kincaid Brides right along since book one like I have then are sure to be satisfied and happy at the ending and last book of the series with Over the Edge. I have anxiously been waiting for the book about Seth Kincaid since I was first introduced to him in the beginning of the series. Seth is a bit on the crazy side and I was curious how Mary Connealy would give him his "happily ever-after". Just like always Connealy does not disappoint and we get to continue the story in Over the Edge with Seth's wild adventures. I highly recommend that if you haven't read the first two books in the series yet that you should. It is my opinion that there is way too much going on to fully appreciate the story without knowing all the background information.

Right from the beginning of Over the Edge we get to meet Callie, Seth's wife in a very unusual and terrifying setting. The best part though is when Seth meets Callie and finds out she is his wife and he has a son he never knew. I found it a bit hilarious that Seth had no clue who she was but was just as attracted to her as ever.

When the Kincaid Bride series first came out Seth Kincaid has always intrigued me the most. He had been through some outrageously awful experiences and it turned him in to a nut! I enjoyed how God began a new work within Seth and started to shape and mold him in to a man to be proud of again. His story is a great example of how God can make something beautiful out of awful things.

My favorite part of the story is when Seth begins to remember Callie all over again. The way he describes the memories was undeniably sweet and romantic and I really felt like I was there reliving the moment with him and Callie. I also really enjoyed that although this story was focused on Seth and Callie we still had plenty of interactions with our previous favorite characters Ethan, Audra, Rafe and Julia. It was like one big family reunion that I got to be a part of.

Just like in all of Mary Connealy's books we wouldn't have a good ol' western without the danger lurking, the bad guys and a good ol' shootout!! On top of the evil, we have redemption and forgiveness, laughter and kisses galore!! Great series for any fans of Mary Connealy or fans of Christian Westerns!!

I was given a paperback copy of Over The Edge by Bethany House in order to read it and give my honest opinion. All opinions are my own.

Don't ask me why the Kincaid Brides is the first series I've gotten around to reading from Mary Connealy. I know she's written about a million books by now, and that she's become an insanely popular author over the last few years. I can tell why that is so too. She is an excellent writer, story-teller, plot-producer, and theme-perfecter.

I think what I liked most about Over The Edge was how it not only wrapped up every detail the reader collected along the way and put it right in it's spot at the end, but that Connealy was also able to wrap up the entire three book series in the same way. She has a knack for writing quirky characters, and let me tell you, by book three there were quite a few of them!

I'm not certain if this might have something to do with the popularity of her novels, but all three of the books in the Kincaid Brides series had more kisses than I could keep track of. It was a little much at times, but I will say they were never overdone... just randomly and lightly sprinkled throughout the books.

It was very interesting to see the relationship between the two main characters (who were married but separated by strange circumstances in which the husband didn't remember a thing about having a wife) get to know each other again. It was especially satisfying when Seth began really remembering Callie and their old times together, and not just liking her because he favored the idea of her being his wife.

I was given a paperback copy of Over The Edge by Bethany House in order to read it and give my honest review for this LitFuse Publicity Blog Tour. I give the book 4 Stars.

When I picked up this book, I was pretty sure it would be another sappy Christian Western romance, and I figured I would have to struggle through it. I can tell you that I was wrong about that point. The action drew me in from the beginning, and I was rather intrigued by the story. I only wished that the action had not been so sporadic. But it was not a sappy love story.

I loved Seth and Callie. They made the reading absolutely worthwhile. In fact, I would have loved to read more about their relationship. I really did not care much for the other characters. And sometimes the story lagged a little bit. But the exchanges between Seth and Callie were realistic and fun. I found myself rooting for Seth but fully supporting Callie.

I wish there had been more Christian influence in this novel. This has become a growing trend for God to almost take a back seat in Christian books. I don't like the other extreme of forcing Christ into the story, but I only saw the characters pray a few times, and there was no emphasis on living by Biblical principles.

In spite of everything, it's a nice, light, clean read that is suitable for all ages. You will love Callie's spunk, and your heart will break for Seth. I can mostly recommend this book to lovers of clean Western romances.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Mary Connealy's third and presumably final book of the Kincaid Brides, Over the Edge, thoroughly concluded the series with her usual comedic flair.

As with her other novels, the romance between the main characters was laced with humorous situations and tenderness, for all that the bride was angry enough to take shots at her errant husband.

Family, throughout the whole series, seemed to be a major theme, but it was most prominent in Over the Edge. Connealy surprised me in an unexpected plot twist - the existence of a fourth Kincaid boy - and all four of them must work together in the novel to accept and forgive themselves and their father. Each has spent years believing himself responsible for the collapse of their family, and they truly need God's strength and each others' support to work through this unexpected turn. The youngest, Heath, also needs help learning to forgive his older brothers for being part of the other family and to learn how take comfort in them and to be a real family with them.

It's a great, light romantic comedy and fitting conclusion to the series (unless a fourth should come out about young Heath), but it lacks some of the depth of novels by other authors. It's still a great read and I highly recommend it, but be sure to read the first two first!

More like 3.5 stars...

I started to read the previous book, but wasn't fond of the characters, so I went on to the third. I liked Callie, though the plot seemed a bit strange. I did want them to work things out. Seth was likable at times and other times his inner dialog made me think of a five year old. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but if the author intended to portray him as a bit immature in his thinking, she did well on that account. Maybe I should have read the prior books to get a true appreciation of the cavern, but I didn't get the fascination. I have to admit the romantic elements and their inner dialog regarding each other was at times heart warming and intriguing. I liked how the author showed their attraction to each other. The comments Callie made toward Seth at first were probably intended to be humorous, but I didn't find them very funny. All in all the book was okay. I had parts that I really liked and other parts that I didn't like so that's why I rounded it down. If it hadn't had good romantic tension I probably wouldn't have finished it. The ending was good, too. Conquering demons is always a nice way to wrap up a story, though there is no way to know if he was really better after that since the story ended.

This is the 3rd book in "The Kincaid Brides" Series, but it's the first one I've read. As much as I enjoyed this one, I imagine I would have enjoyed it even more if I'd read the first two books to fill in more of the details. It did read perfectly fine as a stand-alone, though. (As a side note, I've heard that the first book in this series is Mary's least favored book, so if you read it and don't like it, definitely give another one a chance!!)

Callie is one of those fun, "tough as nails" kind of girls. She thinks crying is a waste of time and she can handle a gun better than most guys. I adored how she still made her man feel like she needed him to protect her! Seth is an unusual leading man, to say the least! He is crazy in the head. Now I know perfectly well that ALL of us need love and affection, but I'm still a little surprised he grew on me as much as he did. He had a great deal going against him.

Over the Edge is a fun, action packed Western story. If that sounds interesting to you, and it should, then definitely pick up a Mary Connealy book!

Nobody does crazy like Mary Connealy. Seriously.

After meeting Seth Kincaid in the previous two “Kincaid Brides” books I wondered if I could buy into him as a hero. Usually I cheer for the steady, responsible, gainfully-employed types. I can’t think of any off-his-rocker hero that has won my heart in the past. Especially one who abandoned his wife and child. Redeeming such a character would take uncommon skill.

Mary Connealy… you got skills.

From the first page in Seth’s POV I was sold. Seth hears threats blazing from an over-turned stagecoach. His thoughts:

“A woman.
A woman who knew his name.
A woman who knew his name and wanted to kill him.
He’d never had much luck with women.”

No question, the strength of this story is being able to sympathize with Seth. I felt like I understood him, even when he didn’t understand himself. I also understood why Callie married him, nightmares and all.

This book is funny, exciting and romantic. If you like tough heroines and reckless but kind-hearted heroes, you need to find yourself a copy of Over the Edge.

Over The Edge by Mary Connealy is the third book in The Kincaid Brides Series and is about Seth Kincaid and his bride Callie.

I really enjoyed meeting the Kincaid brothers, Rafe, Ethan and Seth and their wives in this book. There is plenty of humor, suspense and love to go around. Seth is the youngest of the three brothers and is mostly like to find trouble.

I didn't love Callie... Seth's wife. She is a tough Texan, who's been wronged and is holding a grudge -- against Seth! When she first finds Seth, she wants to kill him. Fortunately for us all, she calms down a bit as the book goes on and they spend more time with each other. I felt her personality was a bit off-putting and that she should have been more understanding of all that Seth had been through (especially with the war), but I did like that she was tough and ready to do what was necessary whatever the situation demanded.

If you enjoy historical fiction with a kick of suspense and Cowboys (who doesn't like cowboys?)... then this series would be a great read for you!

Seth and Callie. DNF at about 15%.
I guess I just couldn't get into the book. Callie was a hard ass. At first it's understandable seeing as how she finds her hubby alive and well after he left over a year ago. But once she finds out that it was because of amnesia, she still (unrelievedly) hates his guts. And I was only 10% into the tale at this point so I kinda dreaded another 90 % of the same. There were bad guys too and I liked that Callie was strong and could shoot her own way out of a hold up. But I think this author just isn't for me.
The audio reader was OK.

Seth finally got to tell his story. And what a great story it was. Loved Callie. I thought this would be the end to the series, but now I'm not so sure. Does Heath have a story to tell? I hope so. I would love to read more about the Kincades.

Love love love love! There is just something about Mary Connealy's writing that I just adore! I've read all the books in this series as well as her sharpshooters series and a few more and I have adored every single book.
