I don't usually read contemporary romantic suspense, but I decided to give Submerged a try, and boy am I glad I did. From the very beginning the setting breathed life, and I could have sworn the author herself was an experienced rescue diver because the dive scenes were so authentic. Dani Pettry knows how to do her research and weave it seamlessly into her stories in order to create a fantastic experience for the reader.

Cole McKenna is a top-notch, sigh-worthy hero. A man dedicated to family, to his principles, and to doing what needs to be done. Of course the fact that he is drop-dead gorgeous and a man who knows how to have good clean fun only makes him that much more attractive.

Bailey Craig has serious baggage from her past, but she's smart and not afraid to fight when backed into a corner. I found myself cheering for her.

Dani Pettrey created a marvelous plot--original, larger-than-life while still completely believable, and perfectly paced. The story never felt rushed or bogged down. It flowed beautifully.

Readers who enjoy romantic suspense will love, Submerged.

Submerged by Dani Pettrey - 5 Stars - Re-read higher rating!

I am not much of a re-reader but I loved the experience re-reading this one! Submerged is book 1 in the Alaskan Courage series and I plan to make my way through this series in 2024. I read this book in 2021 but never continued so before I continue on in the series, I wanted to re-read book 1 so the characters would be fresh in my memory. So glad I did! I enjoyed it so much more this time around and am rating it 5 stars!

A solid romantic suspense set in Alaska! Bailey Craig vowed to never return to Alaska but when her Aunt is killed in a plane crash and evidence shows more to the case than they thought, she proves to be an asset to the investigation and stays around to help investigators. Bailey's past mistakes are following her when she comes back home but she is a new creation in Jesus and knows it doesn't define her anymore. She only hopes everyone else sees it the same way when she returns. Then we have Cole McKenna, the guy she left behind when she left 10 years ago. He knows Bailey has changed and really encourages her in that. He still has feelings for her when she returns and will stand up to anyone who treats her bad or unworthy. He knows she is worthy and a new creation in Christ - I loved his character so much! They work to piece the case together and the rest goes on from here.

This book shows us how unconditional God's love truly is. I loved the faith content and the characters really make the story. Excited to dive into book 2!

First posted on my blog, Legacy of a Writer.

Whoa! What an adventure! I had a feeling that Dani Pettrey would write a romantic suspense that sucked me in from page one and wouldn’t let me go till the very end. And that's exactly what happened! While the suspense and tension wasn't very high in the first half of the book, things DO happen that keeps the reader going…and then I hit that halfway mark and it just took off!

There is quiet a large cast of characters in Submerged. Not only does the reader really get to know Bailey and Cole, but also his other siblings and best friend, Landon. And not just briefly, either—by the end of the novel I had come to care for Piper, Kayden, Gage, and Landon just as much as I did Bailey and Cole. Pettrey did an amazing job weaving so many characters into the plot and still making each person and their struggles unique and memorable. Makes me look forward to the next book even more!

And the writing! Wow, was I impressed. So vivid, sharp, and clean. Takes the reader right into the moment, making the characters come alive. And the way she described Yancey, Alaska and all its charm makes me want to go visit this little town. Very well done!

I would recommend this book more for older teens, since there are a few mature situations this book deals with. One character was known to sleep around in her younger days, and while nothing is described, one character remembers having to listen to the teen boys lewd conversations about their times with her. As I said, nothing too descriptive, but this sordid past plays a big part throughout Submerged.

But, really, Pettrey handled this situation so well and carefully, I was impressed by how clean she kept the book, considering the situation her characters find themselves in. All around, I found Submerged to be a wonderful, awesome read that I know I will pick up again. The characters will remain vividly in my thoughts for a long time to come! Here's a high-five from me, Dani, on writing an awesome romantic suspense!! Loved it!!

A good start to a family orientated Christian Suspense that plunges you into the world of Yancy set Alaska.

The family dynamics was definitely my favourite aspect which is great as there are a few more books to this series :).

I love the way Biblical scripture and prayer was included through out the story.

The suspense element was ok.

I give Christina Moore 4 stars for her entertaining audio performance.

Piper was my favourite so I can not wait to read book two.

Recommended for all Christian suspense fans especially if you like family dynamics :).

2.5 stars

Submerged by Dani Petrey

This book. . . hmmm. . . I hate giving books reviews when they are less than three stars. This one was a 2.5 star for me.

What I liked.
Super creative. The whole mystery, was quite breathtaking and I really enjoyed all of the diving! Just super awesome in that respect!
THe characters were great too. I love the McKenna family, especially Piper and Gage. . . those two are my faves. THe whole book, I couldn’t help but think that I just wanted it to be all about Piper and Landon. I could smell a romance between them from the first time I met them, despite their adversarial, platonic relationship.
Also, Alaska. . . hellloooo. . .. gorgeous and the setting was quite interesting.
History, also something that I like.
Suspense was pretty well done, enough to keep me reading it instead of marking it as DNF.

What I didn’t care for:
The story/book in general left me with a bit of a “meh” feeling. Between Bailey’s past, which, (I get it, it happens to real people and I know it is a real struggle in the world today) the way it was portrayed was a bit too much for me personally. There were enough comments that, even though they didn’t describe the scenes, there was little left to the imagination. Which was not something I like to read. Also, one of the schmucky townsmen was making jokes and lewd comments about her past which also made me just as annoyed as super mad at him. Again, real life situations, and not something I can really fault the writer for except that it really wasn’t my cup of tea.
The other thing that was difficult for me was the fact that I didn’t know who everyone was until at least ¾ of the way through the book. Super frustrating as it was hard to keep track. I also still don’t know who a few people are and what their names are. Made the whole thing extremely confusing to me.
Because of that and some other minor details, the story wasn’t enough to have me super excited about it. Definitely not something I would care to read, nor will I be recommending this book to my sisters.

What a great way to discover a new author! I understand that this is Dani Pettrey's debut novel. In my opinion, she did an excellent job. This was a fast read for me and kept my attention from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't wait to get my hands on book two... :)

Edit:
Just finished re-reading this and I must say it's just as good the second time through!!

This is a challenging review for me to write. I wanted to give this book more than three stars, and I debated going up to four throughout the book. However, the continuous lewd mentions to Bailey's past just tipped things too far south for me.

Don't get me wrong: We all have sins in our past that stick in our minds long beyond receiving forgiveness from Jesus Christ. And yes, these things color our perceptions sometimes, as well as the perceptions of others. I think Ms. Pettrey portrayed this pretty well, but I don't think the lewd comments and innuendo were appropriate. Writing about a theme such as promiscuity is really tough, and while Ms. Pettrey refrained from going behind those bedroom doors, there were moments when things were a bit too descriptive or lead the mind to figure out details I'd rather not have in my head.

Something that drove me nuts, probably because it's something I would flag as a copyeditor, was the over-usage of phrases such as "turned heel" that were fairly unique and stood out in my mind as I was reading. They are cool once or twice throughout an entire book, but used more than that and they become a distraction to me.

Another minor note (this particular thing did not weigh into my rating): In the Kindle edition, the POV switches were not noted very clearly, leading to some confusion and head hopping. I noticed in my paperback copy that these POV switches were established with a single blank line. I hope the publisher will make sure these things are made clearer in future Kindle editions they produce.

However, I really enjoyed getting to know the McKennas. I loved how the two leads were thrust together over a tiny piece of evidence in the crime. That was an amazing thing that I've not seen done very often. The crime aspect of this story was quite intriguing, and I wish I could tell you more about it, but I don't want to spoil anything in the discovery for other readers. What I adored possibly more than anything else about this story, though, was the "Nancy Drew" thread. Now that was such fun! It kind of came out of nowhere, but I liked it from the first moment it showed up and every minute afterward.

I am looking forward to trying the next book in the Alaskan Courage series.

I was not compensated for this review.

This book would have gotten a three star for the story, characters, and suspense elements, as I did enjoy those, but. I just couldn't do it with this one. There was too much discussion of the main character's past as a loose woman in high school; even though it wasn't explicit, there were terms used that I just don't like. On top of that, characters (who are Christians, I believe) thought of each other as 'sexy,' which I just can't stand. I did like the message, but all of those words didn't need to be used to get the message across. So, basically, story rating of 3 stars, but content made me drop it down.

I’m not a big risk taker and I’m not a thrill seeker - yet I gravitate towards those books. Cave diving has always fascinated me, so when I discovered this book on the shelves of Parnassus Books in Ketchikan, I needed to have it.

Characters:
Cole McKenna is the perfect combination of sweet studmuffin and adventure seeker. Not only did he raise his siblings when their parents died, he’s a dive rescue captain and operates Last Frontier Adventures in Yancey, Alaska. He’s sent out as part of a rescue team to recover a plane that crashed into the ocean. This mission brings his teenage love interest back into his life.

Bailey Craig is the perfect combination of an anxious introvert and a history lover. She left Yancey after graduation with no plans to return and channeled her love of Russia and education into becoming a professor of Russian Studies. When she’s forced to return thirteen years later, she worries about how people will view her and worries about running into her first (and only) love.

Setting: Yancey, Alaska (pop. 603)
This island village nestled between the sea and the mountains may seem idyllic to me and my love of nature and serenity, but to Bailey, it symbolizes regret and shame.

I loved reading about facing fears, letting go of past failures, Alaska’s Russian history

I really wanted to love this book! I lived in Alaska for around 10 years total, and loved the idea of a book set there. However, I was pretty disappointed. Frankly, it sounded more like it was set in California, Florida or Hawaii than it was Alaska most of the time. "Surfer" lifestyle--in Alaska?!? The story is supposed to take place in a fictional town on the peninsula just south of Kodiak. Um, I lived on Kodiak. Her descriptions do not in any way match what I remember. She talks of Piper and Landon trekking through salt marshes ("the glades") but never mentions mosquitoes. If Landon is complaining of trekking through mud, he would definitely be complaining of the mosquitos!! They're Alaska's unofficial state bird, for crying out loud! lol They would be being eaten alive during the summer! The worst thing is all the diving. At one point they talk of staying in the water for around an hour. Not in Alaska!! My sister's brother-in-law fell in the water in Kodiak and nearly died of hypothermia in 4 minutes!! Nothing was mentioned of special dive gear for the cold water, and even with special gear they would have been seriously limited on how much time they could stay in. For Cole to show up with a dive mask and tell Bailey she only needed a swimsuit shows how badly this book was researched. I wish she had done a lot more research of what the area is really like.

Some of the story line I thoroughly enjoyed. Dani dealt with Bailey's rough past very well. She didn't fall into the trap of being too descriptive, but she didn't gloss over it, either. Cole is almost too good to be true. He is all care and concern for Bailey, seeming to have no trust issues or doubts about her despite what she did to him years ago, but has issues trusting a young man he's been working with that's in a bad situation. The guy has been doing great for months, but he's very quick to suspect him when something goes missing. A little bit of a double standard to me.

The last think is a personal preference. I don't like it when books rewrite history. "Well, everyone THINKS that such and such happened, but what REALLY happened was....."

I struggled with how many stars to rate this. I ended up going with three vs. two for the sensitive way she dealt with Bailey and her story.

This was such a strange blend. First, I'd no idea this was Christian and maybe that's a good thing as I probably wouldn't have picked it. But I found it on Amazon top 10 Free lists and gave it a shot and before I knew it, I was halfway in...no sleep in sight, you know how it goes.

There's quite a lot of underwater scenes, so if you're uncomfortable with holding your breath quite literally while getting to the end of the page, maybe this isn't for you.

Forget about those few religious notes if you're very category oriented - this story is addictive, exciting (if completely unrealistic for a fictional town in Alaska that sounds more like it's somewhere near San Diego, but whatever).

It's filled with action that twists with more action, not just psycho guessing of the plot. I read a lot of psych thrillers and this felt like a refreshing pause from that. Instead of guessing and analyzing, you grip the screen breathing deep...well, I never thought anyone would die, I just wanted more personal gazes and kissing. And touching...and more...BUT this is a Christian book, so that's in the imaginary FADE OUT at the end of the scenes, and book itself.

Friends had been telling me how great this series is for a long time, but it somehow kept slipping to the bottom of my to-read pile. I finally got to it, and it's fantastic!

Bailey left Alaska, leaving her heart there with Cole McKenna and swearing never to return. When a death in the family pulls her back, she becomes involved in a police investigation that leads her into harm's way and Cole's arms.

The mystery is interesting, but the characters are what make this book such a great read. The McKenna family is full of interesting backstory (which will hopefully be developed in the rest of the series). I loved the family and community dynamics.

Christian fiction often seems a balancing act of characters who follow Christ but remain true to the real world, full of flaws and weaknesses. I think that's what I liked most---the characters struggle with real issues while trying to walk in faith. It was a nice balance to many characters who are too good to be true.

Fans of Christian suspense will enjoy this book as much as I did. Dani Pettrey is right there with Dee Henderson, Irene Hannon, and Lynette Eason in the ranks of Christian romantic suspense!

I did not realize this was a Christian book - as another reviewer pointed out the publisher is known as such, but again not aware. The plot at times jumped forward, author missed opportunities to richly detail the characters, the storyline, and surroundings. I did not find the descriptions of the Alaskan setting believable. Most annoying was the lecture given to Piper about being on a date until midnight, ostensibly with a man she could not possibly know all that well. What kind of a small town do these folks live in that they think so poorly of one another? This diminished her as a female character.

I've been meaning to read Dani Pettrey for quite awhile now and am hooked! Very enjoyable story, told in a delightfully unique voice. I'm looking forward to more. I'm very grateful for Baker's offering this free...I snatched it up and read it that same night.

The story was not at all what I expected. I enjoyed the challenging mystery and was rooting for Bailey to make the decision she made almost from the very beginning! I've never studied much about diving, so I learned some very interesting facts along the way, which is always a great plus for me.

I read this book probably 8 years ago or so, and I just listened with my husband. I enjoyed it again and loved the family, action, storyline, and romance. But, what I loved most was the gospel being shared via the characters. I pray many get their hands on this book and read how much God loves them no matter their past.

What a start to what is sure to be a great series!

“Submerged” blends a wonderful array of great characters, gripping suspense and a romance that will the most hopeless of hearts at a near sigh.

One would think from the cover that the inside of the novel would be as chilling as the outside, but actually beginning to end, this novel has to be on the easiest, smoothest romantic suspense I believe I have read. Perfect balance in story and tension, romance and suspense. Character portrayals are deep and rise to the challenge of entertaining me as a reader, but also leaving me fulfilled in their journey. The setting is fantastic and I loved how it became a character in this story.

Secondary characters are great! I truly loved how they started their story in this novel, great story angle and perfect for keeping the reader hooked.

Definitely a high concept novel there was so much brought into this story. Russian history. Deep-sea diving. A swallowed city? Russian mafia/bad guys dudes? I admit to getting a little lost in some of the “minutia” of historical facts, but ignore me, I tend to get that way anyway.

I was thoroughly pleased with this new find. A stellar debut novel and I look forward to returning to these characters (especially secondary characters!!) in coming novels. Hope it’s not too long a wait!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author and publisher for my copy to review.

SUMMARY: A sabotaged plane. Two dead deep-water divers.

Yancey, Alaska was a quiet town...until the truth of what was hidden in the depths off the coast began to appear.

Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey again. She has a past, and a reputation--and Yancey's a small town. She's returned to bury a loved one killed in the plane crash and is determined not to stay even an hour more than necessary. But then dark evidence emerges and Bailey's own expertise becomes invaluable for the case.

Cole McKenna can handle the deep-sea dives and helping the police recover evidence. He can even handle the fact that a murderer has settled in his town and doesn't appear to be moving on. But dealing with the reality of Bailey's reappearance is a tougher challenge. She broke his heart, but she is not the same girl who left Yancey. He let her down, but he's not the same guy she left behind. Can they move beyond the hurts of their pasts and find a future together?

REVIEW: This debut book from new-to-me author Dani Pettrey is full of suspense, surprises, romance and faith. This book pulled me in from page one and kept me reading until after midnight to find out how it ended. Loved the vivid descriptions of the town of Yancey Alaska making the reader feel they were right there. There is a large cast of characters but you feel you get to know each one of the McKenna family and their relationships are so well depicted. Bailey grows and develops leaving her past behind and truly understanding second chances and God's forgiveness. Through it is an interesting Russian mystery, it was certainly a book that leaves you wanting more. I'm definitely hooked and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

FAVORITE QUOTES: "It's why I work with teens at Grace. There is so much in this world trying to pull them down. They desperately need Christ. We all do. And they need to know how much He loves them."

"I'm still such a mess. We all are. We don't instantly become like Jesus the moment we're saved. It's a journey."

"When people hurt they usually want to run away from God instead of to Him--even though He's what they need most."

I don't want to be harsh in my reviews, because I know what it takes to write a novel, produce a film, music, etc. It's very difficult. This book was a recommended Nook Daily Find, which I have found to be a good source of books.

I have no faith in Christian fiction, Christian movies or any other Christian entertainment. It's as if Christian consumers have lowered their standards and anything with Christian content becomes more acceptable. Christian content does not make a book good. This is not a four star book.

This book could have been great, but it wasn't. The last 80 pages were worthy. The rest was flat. So much more could have been done with the story. There were times when a chapter would have me interested and then it would abruptly cut and skip forward in time. This happened multiple times, killing any tension in the story.

I am so excited to be reviewing this book, because I know in a few days I'll have book #2 in the series! This was an excellent book, and I read it in 2 days! Submerged by Dani Pettrey is the first book in the Alaskan Courage series. It takes us to a small town Yancey Alaska (I know, who would have thought!) :p and introduces us to a range of characters, but focuses on 2 main characters: Bailey Craig and Cole McKenna. The opening scenes pulled me in. The Russian history, the setting and the diving information were interesting! I got confused with so many characters in the beginning with the use of 4 POVs. At times I wasn't sure if Bailey understood the gospel because though she was a Christian she still carried the load of guilt and shame of her past.

I ended up really liking Submerged! (I finished it in a day!!) I was very excited to read it!
Suspense isn’t my go-to genre but I’m exploring it. This was my first Dani Pettrey and I really liked it!! I’m excited to have found a suspense book I liked!

Aside from the faith, the characters were the highlight of the book for me. The McKenna family is so fun. I loved getting to know each one of them a bit more. They’re all different. I believe Piper is my favorite although I love Gage and Cole a ton
too!❤️
I really like redemptions arcs and Bailey’s was so well done. I felt for her so much. I loved watching her grow.
Cole was a sweetheart. I loved how forgiving and kind he was. Truly he was a great, godly man.
I loved Cole and Bailey together! Second-chance love stories aren’t my favorite but this one was very sweet.
Also, I really like Landon and Jake. Especially Landon. I’m already shipping him and Piper SO much. I’m very much ready for book 2!!

I love the setting! I love how adventurous these characters are! They’re so fun!
The ending was precious.

The plot was fast-paced and filled with suspense so there was no putting it down.

The faith was beautifully written. I loved how God was such a big part of these characters lives. The character’s faith was present throughout the book. i loved that! I love that when they were facing hard stuff, they went to God in prayer. I also love that the character’s aren’t perfect. They’re real, raw, and relatable. The faith was just great. I love that so much! It brought such light to a book that could potentially be dark.

Like I said before, I don’t typically pick up suspense. I think maybe it’s because they tend to have a darker feel and I don’t like reading things that feel dark or creep me out too much. But this book didn’t feel that way for me! There was fun and lightness along with the deeper, darker moments.

There are references and memories from Bailey’s past that she regrets. I didn’t feel it went too far or was in too much detail although it wasn’t something I wanted to dwell on. I would say 18+ since these are older characters and some mature themes.

After reading it, I also found that Dani Pettrey has made playlists and Pinterest boards for the series!!!🤩 I LOVE that!! I love seeing how the author pictures the characters and the songs they would choose for the books aesthetic! I’ve listened to the playlist for Submerged and it’s perfect! Also the Pinterest aesthetic.😍

Does Anybody Hear Her by Casting Crowns is such a perfect song for Bailey. It makes me cry!

Overall, I got really invested in these characters’ stories. I’m very excited to start the next ones and I’m very excited to have found a suspense book I liked! (I actually started Shattered immediately after finishing Submerged because I’m really excited for Piper and Landon’s story!!!)

I wrote down thirteen books and a (Jamie’s) brief description. Then I hand them to my husband to choose my next read. I will continue this until I’m done with all thirteen. Wy chose this book first. My brief description was as follows:

Suspense, Sabotaged plane, dead people, Alaska.

He chose this because of Alaska. He said it sounded interesting. I feel like this might be a good deal in making him choose my next book.

Now the book starts off with a plane crash and all the occupants dead. The start was actually amazing. Sometimes I don’t like how suspense books start off. This genre is a hit or miss for me. Along with second-chance romances, which this book also has.

There are POVs from several characters. It’s not a jumbled mess like in some books. I found I could follow the POVs just fine. Bailey and Cole are the main two that are featured. They have a history together and haven’t seen each other since Bailey left Yancey. Cole is a skilled diver and part of the SARs team along with the rest of his family. Bailey’s aunt was on the plane when it crashed. It’s been ten years since Bailey left Yancy with a bad reputation. She has since cleaned up her act with a doctorate and found Jesus.

As far as I can tell, Yancey is a fictional town. The plot deals with the history of Russia and Alaska. I don’t know much about Alaska’s history since it wasn’t really taught in Colorado or Kansas. (The two states I went to school.) I also looked up some of the Russian history this brought up. I’m not big on Russian history either.

I really loved Dani’s writing. I didn’t want to put this book down. It’s been a while since I have read a book so fast. It didn’t even feel like I was reading. I am going to get the second book and follow the family. Piper and Landon’s book is next.

Here's my thoughts on this one:

I struggled with it through a lot of it, mostly the amount of characters, a few parts I got a little bored with, I put the book down and read other books then by the time I picked it up again I'd forgotten who some people were. The ending felt rushed to me, and I'm still not sure what happened. This is also a Christian book, so there's a lot of inwardly praying to the Lord for so and so and such and such. The main character was supposed to be a born again Christian but spent WAY too much time like 98% of the book lamenting on her past and how she's not worthy of anything, which seriously annoyed me. I like stronger main characters, especially if you knew and understood that Jesus forgave you for your sins or whatever, that means the past is erased, quit whining about it already.

I don't think i'll continue with the 2nd book, I do want to read pipers story, but skimming ahead to the synopsis of the next bunch of books is showing me that there are a lot more new characters that will be being introduced. I'm not sure I want to continue, maybe if I ever stumbled on the second book, I may read it.
