I’m a writer. Well, technically an author, because they say that you magically become an author (i.e. true creative) if you’ve published something, and you’re a writer if you haven’t (you know those closet aspiring geniuses who just scribble stuff into notebooks and hide it from the world?). But I still call myself a writer. I’m one of 4 brothers. The middle son. I guess that’s supposed to make me uber weird and dysfunctional, but the jury’s still out on that one. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream. Like, really love it. Watching movies and going to rock shows are 2 of my favorite pastimes, and I am addicted to telling stories.

It all started because a 5th grade teacher decided to become a meddler in my life. That’s right, one of my least favorite authority figures at the time assigned us to write these 1 page short stories for class. We had the freedom to create whatever we wanted (within reason), but the assignments were do every day, and upon completing the school year, the plan was that we’d all bind them to compile a book. Well, at the time I hating reading, hated writing, and wanted to be a comic book artist. I figured I’d one day work for Marvel or Disney or something. And I was pretty good at sketching too. But I always found it hard to create my own characters, and I often just settled for copying somebody else’s masterpiece.

Something was missing.

Well, then a 2nd meddler enters the picture. My pops. He starts helping me with the stories. And by helping me, I really just mean I was there more as a consultant and a constant nuisance, ensuring proper grammar was employed. He was the real writer, in my mind. I just wished I could be him. My teacher started grading the stories, and I was floored to see A+ after A+. And she liked my stories enough…ahem, our stories enough, to read them in front of the class. The response was terrific. My classmates actually gave a crap. They wanted to know what happened next. So I turned 1 story into about 12 or so, and made a little book out of it. Looking back, it’s probably terrible. But the point is…I was hooked on the game.

My father and I began discussing book concepts until finally, in 6th grade, I set out to write a “real” book, all by myself. 3 years later, Servant of the Realm was born. It was so under the radar it wasn’t even funny, but I was just stoked to have my book searchable on the internet. It’s a pretty cool feeling when you’re 15. 3 years later, I released The Sacred Sin, a much darker story about a detective on the hunt for a serial killer who can steal souls. (THE FORSAKEN is the revamped version. I literally rewrote every page, and added about 100 more pages to the story. So if you haven’t picked that baby up, you might wanna.) 3 years after that–I know, 3 is the magical number, it seems–ARSON was unleashed. This story is closest to my heart because it came from a very unique place and time in my life. It’s like I grew up while writing it.

Well, sorta…

Flash forward to now. I’ve got 5 novels and several short stories out. I’ve been interviewed on TV, radio, and the internet. I’ve done several blog tours, have my own Youtube channel, twitter page, FB page, so quite frankly, there’s really no reason for you not to stalk me. I’m still that sort of college kid looking for his path while already on a path. I love to write. I love to ask the big questions, to create raw, flawed characters who do incredible things. And I’m reminded every day why I do what I do, why I write, why I tell stories…because of you. Because of something greater than myself. Because if I didn’t, I’d probably go insane.

Welcome to my dysfunctional world.

Spread the fire!

If you've followed my reviews for the past few months, then you know how much I loved Arson. And when I thought that there was no way to improve on such an amazing story, Vega has decided to go and prove me wrong in Ashes. It's darker, grittier and so much more than what I expected it to be. Plus, it had just enough detail and reference to Arson that it was a slice of cake to delve right back into Arson's world.

One of the first things that I noticed in this book is that we get to know Arson a lot better, both past and present. He's always been a character of interest, but that's taken to a whole knew level in this book. Not only do you get to know him more, but you empathize with him so much that you feel everything that he feels and experience everything that he goes through right with him.

Of course, Emery is also back and you witness what she goes through as well. Both she and Arson go through a lot, not only physically but mentally as well - all while not knowing what has happened to each other. We're also introduced to a new character, Adam, who promises to get Emery out of the facility.

The POV changes a lot through the story. However, where most stories would get confusing and difficult to follow, Estevan writes the perspective changes so well that switching is as easy as counting 1-2-3. It doesn't take you out of the story at all. On the contrary, it adds more layers to the story so we can see how everyone is effected by Arson and Emery's disappearance from their own lives and their entrance into Salvation Asylum. As we advance in the story, we not only learn more about the characters but also about the true purpose of the Asylum. The ending will both leave you breathless and longing for even more of Arson's world.

Like his other stories, Vega's description and detail in this book are so vivid that you feel as though you've dived right into the dark world that he has created. Every page is chock full of amazing storytelling that keeps you flipping from beginning to end - hanging on to the very end of your seat the entire time.

***FINAL RATING: 3.45 STARS***

CATCHALL
I launched right into this book after reading Arson, not entirely sure what to expect. There's certainly another mix of danger and romance, although there's emphasis on suspense and it's more of an action novel than anything else. I definitely couldn't put it down once I picked it up and after two books I've grown attached to the characters and drawn in by the uniqueness of the plot.

THE HERO
ARSON
The first thing to know about Arson is that he's…quirky. That's the easiest way to put it. Still, there's something endearing about him. He's not a conventional hero but that doesn't make him bad. I love his determination, and how he stays strong even when everything basically sucks. He doesn't let his past mess with him too much but it really difficult to connect to him on a deeper level and I never really did.

THE HEROINE
EMERY
Emery's a sweet girl underneath everything, I think, although in this book she projected a much different image from that of the first. She definitely wasn't entirely the same girl. Her situation in this book really sucks, and while I wanted her to stay stronger, she starts to give in to the hopelessness. At the same time, it's really difficult to blame her. and she does pick herself up eventually, just like we could have hoped.

THE PLOT
Ashes was a seriously intense book. It was much, much more intense than Arson. It's a seriously action-packed book with a smorgasbord of different characters with their own plots.

My main complaint is that it got really confusing. It was difficult to keep all the different plot lines straight, and they had a tendency to blend together. Eventually everything did become clear but while I was waiting for that to happen it was still rather frustrating.

I loved how fast-paced and action-oriented this book was, though. It constantly kept me guessing, taking twists I didn't expect. And though there was a ton of action that doesn't mean that there was no character growth, as there absolutely was. There was a nice balance between the plot and the characters.

I also am a gigantic fan of this book's originality. There's definitely some insane stuff in it that I don't recall seeing in books before, and though of course parts bear similarities to other books overall there was such a wonderful amount of new material that I let it go. I love original concepts and this definitely falls under that category.

So, although I had issues with it, I did really enjoy it. It totally redeemed itself and was an emotional, intense read.

THE ROMANCE
I adore romance. But you guys probably know that. Still, the romance in this book was definitely interesting. It focuses in on Emery more than anyone, particularly with a new guy named Adam, who is really just creepy and weird, but I can't deny that there's chemistry there. Something about them kind of clicks somehow, and there's one scene in particular that was kind of gorgeous until Adam ruined it. I still like Arson with Emery, but we really didn't see that in this book so it's difficult to say what will happen in that path.

THE WRITING
The main thing that bothered me about this writing is that there were way too many POVs. At first I liked getting the insights and situations of so many characters but as the book wore on it was difficult to keep them all straight and I started to get annoyed. Other than that, I found this writing really nice. There's clear talent, and a lot of thought was obviously put into this. The detail is vivid but the world choice does lean towards the simple side.

THE ENDING
While this didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted it to and kind of actually annoyed me in some ways, I'm still satisfied. It's a good, solid ending to a second book that didn't feel done on a whim. I can tell that it was well thought out and it was absolutely unexpected in a good way. It wasn't ideal but that's part of what made it real, I suppose.

WRAPUP
I'll definitely be picking up the third book in this trilogy eagerly! I can't wait to find out what happens next and I'm certainly very much invested in this series. I'll also be keeping an eye on this author even after that to see what he comes up with next. Would I recommend this? If you're an action movie lover, yes. If you're a paranormal lover, yes. Yes.

FINE.

This book total blew me away. While the first book was really a set up for this Ashes, Ashes gave me a whole new reading experience! The plot line, new characters, and a great back round history that left me begging for more.
One thing I enjoy in books is the back round history to the characters. In Arson, the reader got bits and pieces of Arson's past but not really a full explanation. Ashes, gave the reader the history I was dying to know. Who where Arson's parent? How did he come by this ability? Are there more others out there just like him? I love that Mr. Vega gave such a fulfilling history to the characters that the reader has no choice but to turn the pages faster and faster!

Another great twist to this book are the new characters. Yes, characters that bring up a whole new world to question!! I for one, was super excited to read more about these characters. And the secrets! WOOHOO! This book left me hanging off the edge of my seat. I don't want to say any more less I spoil it.

Now there are several ongoing love interest here. Some I expected as others really surprised. There were characters doings that I didn't like but felt it played out well with the story line. I really like how Mr. Vega kept the story going on with lots of plot twist and turns. Nothing in this book ever gets boring. It just keeps on getting better and better.

Take my word for it and read this series. I can tell you that Arson is a build up story to Ashes which leaves a burning impression on your hands. Yes, the book is that hot.

(a similar version of this review can be found here at Into the Hall of Books: http://www.intothehallofbooks.com/201...)

Before we even get started, you need to know this: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the first book in this series, ARSON, and I am an absolute fan of Estevan Vega.

Now all of that is out of the way, I'm going to tell you my thoughts about ASHES, the second book in this series...but I want to warn you that it may end up being a gush-fest because I think this book is brilliant and I could really just leave it at that.

I am having a fit to tell you about ASHES. Let's get started:

1. The Characters. I thought the characters were excellent in ARSON, and they really were. But they are amazing in ASHES. Arson and Emery are back, as are some of the others from the first book, but GOOD GRACIOUS there are some new characters. And WOW they are so great to read...and I mean that in the craziest way possible.
**Arson. If you'll remember, Arson can start fires with his mind, but doesn't understand how or why he can do this. He always felt like a freak. Because of this rare ability, Arson now finds himself locked up and being studied. He doesn't really understand why he's being studied; all he knows is that he has to find Emery. He hasn't seen her since the events at the end of the first book, and he is not only worried about her but he misses her like crazy...well, as much as he can in his drug-induced stupor. Arson keeps trying to access his fire-starting abilities to break himself out of the Salvation Asylum, which is like a prison for him, but somehow these crazy "doctors" that are studying him have him subdued enough that he can't get a grip on his fire. If he can just get wake up a little and get a handle on himself, he could find Emery...

**Emery. If you'll remember, Emery moved with her parents into a vacant house near Arson. A bit of a freak herself, Emery always wore a mask to cover some facial burns. Emery's life was a bit crumbly before - not only because of her own past but because of her parents failing careers and marriage - but when she found Arson, things took an amazing turn for the better. Their friendship turned into a slow sort-of romance, and after the events of the last book, Emery also found herself locked up and being studied. Emery, however, isn't being kept drugged up (like Arson) and is very aware of her awful surroundings. After escaping the Salvation Asylum, she has an adventure-of-sorts with the boy who helped her escape, Adam...

**Adam. Adam has also been locked up in the Salvation Asylum and studied...for years. He is the one that breaks Emery out - he saves her, he says - and then takes her on a crazy adventure. I mean, C-R-A-Z-Y. Emery is such a good sport, of course, but eventually she begins to wonder if she's ever going to see Arson again...and then so are we, the readers. Adam starts telling us HIS story, and there are more twists, turns, and corners than in a funhouse, you guys. This kid - can we trust him? I just don't know. But he makes for one heck of a story. I LOVED THIS CHARACTER.

We also meet the staff of the Salvation Asylum. Friends, these people are...they're crazy. But WOW, they're fun to read. They're detailed and wonderful and just...some of them will leave your mouth hanging wide open.

Emery's parents, Joel and Aimee, are also back. In the first book, these two had a really tough time with a marriage that was falling apart very fast. In ASHES, these two parents start out on opposite sides but quickly realize that they need to work together to get back Emery. I LOVE what the author did with these two. Reading about the demise of their marriage was tough in the first book, but if you can hang on until Ashes, there just may be good things in store for this couple...if they can make it through some twists and turns of their own.

You guys, I'm not joking. Ashes is characterization for the masses. These characters all so well done. Brilliant, even.

2. Backstory. Hooray for backstory, Estevan Vega! In the first book, we really don't know much about Arson's past. Guys, we're getting some backstory here in the form of EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH ARSON'S PARENTS. And let me tell you, I read that part more than once...because I could hardly believe it. Nail-biting and heart-pounding, folks. And there's more, really. We find out even more about Arson's history and more about Emery. And all about Adam's past.

3. Genre. Thriller. Maybe horror. Also, this book has more paranormal elements in it than ARSON did, and they are creepy and thrilling and fun and a teensy bit disturbing at times. Loved it.

4. The Structure. Like ARSON, ASHES has Alternating POV. Several people are telling this story and it is INCREDIBLE...because there are a ton of things happening and you WANT to know what is going on at all times. The way Estevan wrote this story was the only way it could be written and he did it perfectly. I was never confused about who was talking because each of his characters is so obvious. The pacing and timing are perfect - I never felt a lull in the action at all. In fact, I fought with myself not to read too fast so I wouldn't miss any details.

5. Romance. By the end of ARSON, I had fallen head-over-heels for Arson and Emery and their sweet relationship. ASHES begins three months after the end of ARSON, which means they've been separated for three months already. They miss each other terribly, and it is tough to read about those emotions in this book because they feel so isolated and lonely. Throughout the book, we're inside their minds as they constantly wonder and worry about the other one - wonder if they'll ever see each other again, wonder if the other one is alive and okay...I wish that I could've seen them together more in this book, but the story was perfect the way it was. Basically, the romance that happened in ARSON wasn't really a true 'romance' in ASHES - it was two people who were missing and wanting each other desperately because they were separated. They spend a ton of time trying to figure out how to get back to one another.

6. The End. WOW oh WOW. I don't even know what to say about the ending of this one...I will say that it is wide open for another another book and I hope with every fiber of my being that Estevan is going to write one. But who knows?...because it also would be the perfect thriller if it was left as is.

7. The Cover...Matches the cover of ARSON perfectly. It also matches the book perfectly. I love them SO MUCH. I hope people will not be put-off or scared by the covers of these books because this genre is thriller/horror and guys, these covers are cohesive to these plots. They're PERFECT.

***********************************************************************

I'm absolutely amazed by this plot. It has so many different things going on at one time, but they all converge and make sense and I was never confused. And all of the OMG!!! moments weren't saved for the ending of the book...they were spread throughout - which was AWESOME. It felt like there were surprises around every corner. I don't read a ton of thrillers, but when I do, this is how I want them - exactly this way. Also, ASHES is a second book that is even better than the first book - meaning no sophomore slump in this series: read ARSON, love it, and it's still uphill from there, you guys.

Basically, ARSON and ASHES are two of my favorite books. That is all. That's what you need to take away from this. Estevan Vega is an instant-read for me, and it is because of great work like this. These books are crazy-good, and it is because they are nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, heart-pounding thrilling and creepy and disturbing. They are a good time. THESE are books you read and then sit and think about. Or tweet your friends about. Or push on your friends (I pushed them on one of my friends at Starbucks last week. Forced them. She will love them - I know it.)
ASHES will appeal to fans of:

Fire
Nail-Biting, Heart-Pounding, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Stories
Thriller/Mystery Stories with some Creepy in there
Alternating POV
Fantastic pacing with Multiple Subplots
Character and Action Driven Stories
Suitable for all-ages YA as well as Adult Readers

Better than the first one, but it was an awful lot of pages to have a minimal amount of progress. It reads like a fever dream. I can't wait to read the last book and be done with this. I no longer have hope of it getting much better as I go. Boo.

Locked away with little or no hope of escaping both Arson and Emery are trapped in an asylum that has them questioning their sanity. Is any of it real? And is there any hope that either of them will see each other again? As Arson discovers more fully who he is and what he’s meant for his story becomes one that could affect not only his small family and Emery, but the world as well.

Ashes is exactly the kind of book I would have read in my teens. This may shock some of you, but as a teen I read primarily horror novels. From Anne Rice to Richard Matheson to HP Lovecraft and more, there was hardly a horror book I left alone. As a teen there was no such thing as young adult fiction and I basically read whatever my Dad had & recommended. It worked out great because we shared quite a few of the same interests in books and music. Enter today’s standards and I’m sure the books I read back then wouldn’t make the YA cut. Which brings me to the dilemma with Ashes, is it YA or adult fiction? In my personal opinion I’d easily recommend it to a mature teen who loves a good scary paranormal read, but in that same vein I’d also hand it to an adult horror reader as well. I think that applies to quite a bit of YA fiction, but in the case of horror YA maybe even more so. I’d hate for a reader to turn Ashes down because they thought it was not in the right “category”.

As for the story…it was just as I remembered with Arson, full of action and great characters. This being the second book in the series I was personally looking forward to getting to know both Emery and Arson better and seeing where their relationship went after their abduction at the end of the first book. That certainly happened, but what I didn’t expect was the additional characters including Emery’s parents, Lamount, Adam, Saul Hoven and many more. The addition was great in terms of plot twists and the future of the series, but at times I did wish there were only one or two narrators instead of four or five. Besides that, the story was amazing and I loved the idea of placing much of the story in an asylum. Very creepy indeed.

Ashes, the second novel in the Arson series by Estevan Vega, is packed full of action, plot twists and of course a creepy setting. Vega is a fantastic new voice in the world of horror fiction and one that readers will thoroughly enjoy. With the fate of the world at stake I’m eager to see where Adam will lead Arson, if either is truly hoping to save the world and of course who will get the girl in the end. This is a series to watch for and I’m excited to continue reading it as soon as the next book is released!

What is it going to be like for Emery and Arson? In this second installment of the Arson series, it starts with Emery and Arson after they were taken to Salvation Asylum. This is the place where they want to experiment on them to find out what makes them be able to do the supernatural things they can do. They aren’t the only “lab rats” there. There is Adam and he isn’t very happy with how things are going. Emery and Arson both are having trouble remembering things. They wake up hazy and drugged after instances with the machine called Morpheus. Both of them don’t remember what happened to the other and is wondering if they are still alive.

The scientists at the asylum are trying to get Arson and Emery to use their powers, only they don’t know that is the goal. They don’t know what it is the asylum wants from them. Arson keeps having these dreams where he is roaming the halls of a school he went to. Things happen in the school that is supposed to be reflective of his life and the use of his power. The scientists don’t really understand the dreams he is having because some of them aren’t from his memories.

Emery is kept in a dark room with no windows and she slowly starts to lose hope until someone stops outside her door one day. They say that they are going to help her. Meanwhile, back at home, Emery’s parents are having a hard time with her disappearance from the hospital where her mother, Aimee, works. This is causing a rift between Aimee and Joel, Emery’s father. After realizing that drinking isn’t going to find his daughter any faster, he hires Redd, a private investigator, and then sets out to do his own investigation. Will Emery and Arson be found? Will they ever leave Salvation Asylum? What will happen between then and the scientists at the asylum?

This book really kept me on my toes. There are so many POVs in it. It doesn’t subtract from the writing though. If you haven’t read Arson, it isn’t hard to follow whom the characters are. I thought it was good to see how everyone was thinking. It was interesting to read about Arson’s POV in his dreams. Dreams are a weird thing and Arson didn’t always remember things that had happened in his life that were brought up in the dreams. It was a puzzle for him. Meanwhile, the asylums is watching his dreams and are confused as to why he is having dreams (or memories) that don’t belong to him. You don’t get a good sense of Arson’s character in this book because most of the time he is either dreaming or drugged, but there are instances where the true Arson shines through. I really liked Vega’s writing style and look forward to reading more in the Arson series.

Let me start out with a simple statement. I liked Arson, but I loved Ashes. Loved it so much that I devoured it from cover to cover in a matter of hours. To those of you who might have started on Arson Gable's journey, but haven't yet had a chance to dive into this book, hurry up and snag a copy! Once again the driving force of this book is the darkness that is inside people. Arson and Emery each battle the internal voices that are driving them mad. Bad. Good. The lines are so blurred now it's all in question. Estevan Vega has created a world that is equal parts inside these character's head, and inside the penitentiary like asylum that contains them. Ashes is a much darker read, and it delves much further into who these characters actually are.

Arson and Emery are of course back in this sequel, but new characters make a debut too. There's Adam, a fellow prisoner and confidant. Then of course there are the captors, whose story is sinister to say the least. Finally, we get to see further into the enigma that is Emery's parents. Their story blends seamlessly in, as they hunt down the people who took their daughter. It also gives the reader a fabulous look at the guilt, the raw humanity, that is inside Emery's father. I think their story added a nice layer right on top of everything else. The POV changes multiple times in the story, to allow the reader to see through many eyes. Not to worry though. The changes are seamless and I thought that every character had a unique enough voice to make them easy to distinguish from one another.

Pieces of the puzzle that make up Arson and Emery's story are slowly revealed, and there is just enough reference to the last book to keep a reader quickly refreshed and ready to dive back in. There is so much action in Ashes, but it is evenly paced so that you always get just enough to keep you reading until the next piece of the puzzle falls into place. Is Arson something more than he once thought? Does he have the power to be more than just a freak who makes fire? What is it about his past that he just can't seem to remember? You'll find out my friends. You'll find out.

In a cruel twist, which I'm sure was entirely intentional, once again the story is open just enough at the end to allow Arson's story to continue on. In all honesty, I can't wait. Ashes is the perfect blend of all of my favorite things. Darkness, power, morality, love, and so much more. Trust me, if you haven't picked up this series yet and you have been debating it, do it now. Estevan Vega weaves a story that is well worth your time.

Source: Received from author courtesy of Teen Book Scene. Many thanks goes to Estevan Vega and Teen Book Scene for sending me a copy of this book for review. I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

My rating: 4/5

Arson and Emery find themselves locked away, hidden from the world in a bizarre place. Left on their own, they need to find themselves, and come to terms with the events that brought them to their current residence. Everything is surreal as they learn more about themselves and their surroundings. Held captive against their will, they will need to lean on their survival instincts and come to terms with who they are, and who they are meant to be.
While Arson brought us the story of a misplaced teenager, one who could start fires with his mind; Ashes brings us the terrifying sequel, in which Arson is held captive by those wanting to experiment on him to fulfill their own needs. Ashes is a much darker read than Arson and the psychological ramifications will have you reading long into the night. Vega is at the top of his game as he threads together both Arson's and Emery's stories, as they discover what brought them to the Asylum. Is Arson the monster he always thought he was, or is he something more? Can he achieve more? Is there a greater purpose for him? All these questions are asked as the reader partakes on a highly disturbing and dark ride through the underbelly of Salvation Asylum.
New characters show their faces, and their pathos will leave you feeling uneasy as you press on through this volume in Arson's saga. There is a lot of new information thrown at the reader, but the flashbacks to the first novel make the transition as seamless as possible. One cannot help but root for Arson and Emery as they struggle to free themselves from their captors. Joel and Aimee's struggle for closure, and their pursuit for help after Emery's disappearance adds a much-needed dimension to the novel. Following their struggles gives the reader a reprieve from the darkness hidden within the Asylum before heading back into the depths.
All in all, this is a compelling read. Eloquently written and darkly disturbing this one will stick with the reader as they delve further into the book. By no means is Arson's story done as Vega has left the ending open to continue in another installment. One can only hope that Arson will find the answers to his questions, and the solace that he craves.

Ashes left me... speechless.
It also left me with my heart pounding out of my chest, and my hand slightly shaking while I closed it and took a deep breath.
Now, I know all of that sounds really cliche, but it really was that good.
And my only question is; What is going on in your head, Estevan Vega??
Seriously.
I don't think I have read a book that has disturbed me as much as Ashes did.
Which is totally a good thing, because I've been searching and searching for a book that completely freaks me out and mentally disturbs me.
Is that a weird thing to want?
I guess it might be the same craving you horror movie fanatics have.
I don't care if it is, because Ashes is my favorite kind of book.
It was so beautifully written in such a heart wretchedly, disturbing way.
If that makes any sense.
The whole thing was like a Edgar Allen Poe poem.
Where it's lovely and creepy all at once.

What I loved about this book so much is that, not only was the first book, ARSON incredible, but the sequel was even better.

It's kind of like your favorite band. Whoever that might be.
The first album they put out is really great, and you love it.
But the second one is even better.
That band just gets better and better and more talented with every album they put out.
And by the third album, you're thinking it'd be completely impossible for this album to be better than the first two albums. No way.

That's how I feel about Estevan Vega.
I feel like it would be fairly difficult for him to write a third book as perfectly as he did the first two.
So I guess I will just sit here impatiently and wait for the third book.
Ah this will kill me.

Oh and I think I should add that, one of the main characters, Emery, is named after one of my favorite bands. So whenever I read about her, I get the song, "The Curse of Perfect Days" stuck in my head.
Check out the band here: http://www.emerymusic.com/

Anyway, to sum this up, Ashes was great. So so so great.
Read this book. I promise you will love it.
Also, make sure and buy Estevan Vega's short story collection, When Colors Bleed on Amazon!

It’s funny how all these characters are connected in some form or another. It blows my mind. But it makes for an amazing story. I really enjoyed the first book, ARSON but I absolutely loved ASHES.

This book starts off with a bang, though, not literally. The first chapter has you cringing all the way through it. It’s a great way to grab the reader’s attention. It gives you a feel for what’s to come throughout the whole book.

I’m kind of bummed about the lack of Arson and Emery interactions BUT I understand why. It’s just so sad. They finally admit to the feelings they have for each other, tell each other they love each other but then are torn apart. Arson was happy, for the first time in his life and poof, it’s all gone. Very sad. But we learn about how strong he really is, or how strong he’s truly capable of being and also how he was born with these powers.

We find out there’s more to Emery than those nasty scars on her face.

Meeting Adam, I thought I liked him but now, I’m not so sure. I’m not sure I trust him. Sure, his powers are amazing and he really is the answer but the question is, for which side? There’s a lot more to him than initially meets the eye. I was excited that he wanted to help Emery but as the book went on, my guard started to go up…

I love how there are many different stories going on throughout the book but they’re all related. It makes it so much more interesting. I especially love the development with Joel and Aimee, Emery’s parents.

So many good things about this book but so hard to talk about without spoiling what happens. And you don’t want to be spoiled, trust me. This is such a dark book, so different from what I normally read. But you know what? We all need to go away from our ‘comfort zone’ and it’s definitely worth it. I absolutely recommend this to anyone who is looking for something different. Not something with rainbows and unicorns…but something just dark and addicting. Of course, you must read ARSON before you pick up a copy of ASHES but…do it. Seriously.

'Ashes' is the second book in the Arson trilogy. It continues telling the story of Arson after he and Emery were separated. Now Salvation Asylum has taken them for dark and unknown reasons - something to do with genetically altering mankind. After all the experiments he was put through, Arson has become the most valuable piece of scientific evidence that these crazy people have - and they intend to use him to put their devious plans into motion. Arson will discover who he really is and will decide if he wants to stand up for what he believes in. He must learn to use his powers for good - to fight for what's right.

This was a really intense and intriguing second book in this series. At times, I was kind of confused about what was real and what was only happening inside Arson's head - but eventually you get the hang of telling what's going on and the story takes over. The plot was amazing in its depth and detail. I loved learning more about Arson's past, his origins, and the evil plans that the scientists were creating. I felt it added an extra layer to the story and made it more dimensional. Arson is a weird, but fantastic, main character. He's certainly not your normal lead, but he shows a lot of character growth in the story - which I really liked. I found myself rooting for him to overcome the obstacles that had always blocked his way and I definitely liked that he was finally willing to accept himself for what he truly was and what he could be. The plot was intricate and fast-paced - it definitely had me turning pages to see what would happen next. The writing was confusing in parts, like I mentioned earlier, but had a great style and flowed effortlessly throughout the book. Overall, this was a wonderful sequel to the first book and I am really intrigued to see where the third and final book will take us. I'm hoping all the questions will be answered and we'll see a fantastic ending to a truly unique trilogy.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

As sorta-predictable and skip-tempting as I found the first book, this sequel simply rocked. This one definitvely gave more answers then it asked questions, which I am very thankful for, but the show's not over yet. There's still more to come, and I'm looking forward to it!

I liked the plot development, it had all the right twists and edges of a good conspiracy. Some might say predictable, but I plainly enjoyed it -- immensly. I would've never guessed that things would go like this, or that the characters actually turned out to be intwined like this. It's so conspirational it borders on unrealistic, maybe even is a little. Plus, I'm just as unsure which parts are real and which manipulated dreams, false memories, etc as the characters. It's a little frustrating, when you think about it, but it acutally makes me all excited and wanting more.

Then there's the part about Aimee, Joel, Kyro and Redd. That's going to be either a huge drama and I'm gonna cry rivers and/or cuss like a pro, or it'll a luck/action situation. I'm hoping for some drama, but also some happily ever after on that front. It's very promising, though. There's just so many versions for an outcome!

And Adam -- I loved him. As the Source and as a boy/man. I loved all the new background info on the people, too. I'm a sucker for good background stories. Oh, how I long to know how Adam, Emery and Arson are going to interact and work out. I have so no clue, because there are still things contradicting, fighting for what is real and what isn't. Love it, no matter how acingly frustrated it's leaving me.

Gosh, I'm dying for book three. I want to know how it all turns out in the end, who's gonna come out on top, who survives and who dies. My mind is running havoc here.

Amazing darkness, amazing humanity, simply - amazing. Ashes is a story that will brand itself upon your mind and burn there for a very long time.

I truly fell in love with Estevan and his writing from the moment I read his first release The Sacred Sin. His writing voice reminded me of an early Stephen King or Dean Koontz. Mr. Vega's storytelling goes to places many fear to tread and in turn creates an amazing story. Ashes is by no means an exception. Continuing on where Arson left off, readers discover what happened to both Arson and Emery, as their story unfolds, taking on a dark depth not for the weak.

I loved so many aspects of this story. Those who have read Arson will particularly love the extra background story that weaves in of Arson's beginnings. The story opens with this and continues throughout, adding provocative texture to the overall story.

Mr. Vega's writing style quickly and easily brings each one of the characters within Ashes to life, allowing the reader to connect with them on several levels and feel right along with them - the desperation, fear, confusion and so much more. Ashes is also a story that will reiterate just how far some people will go to obtain power - at any cost. I can honestly say that there were times when I found myself so completely engrossed within the story that I found my surroundings blending into the background as I became so wrapped up with what was going on that I shuddered with the vivid descriptiveness.

Those who have not read Estevan Vega's work, you are truly missing out on an enormous talent. This is an author who takes the darkness of the soul and creates vivid and incredible stories that will keep readers coming back for more and more. I cannot wait for Mr. Vega's next work.

Cover Thoughts-
I love it! It has Emery's mask and Arson's subject number 219 all burned and creepy looking and I can't help but shiver. It fits perfectly.

First Thought-
Okay. So I read the first one. Emery and Arson are kidnapped. What happens now?

What I liked-
The whole book is completely different from the first one. If Arson is a gentle blowing tumbleweed of emotion, then Ashes is a volcanic eruption! So many things happened that I didn't see coming. Some new characters were introduced like Adam the one with all the power in this story and he is apparently trying to steal Arson's girl Emery while they are on the run from a madhouse gone bad. My favorite part in the whole novel is when Adam and Emery escape to Adam's old home and Adam heals Emery's horribly scarred face. Then that beautiful moment was made better by an awesome action scene where they get caught and Adam kills practically everybody with his mind. I also like the lovely Red. What you learn about her will blow your mind because she was far from what I expected!

What I disliked-
I felt like the book was missing a lot of Arson and I had a hard time deciding between Adam or Arson for Emery. I want to say Arson because he isn't a psychopath like Adam but Arson wasn't in a single scene with Emery at all! I was hoping the next in the series will have the emotion of Arson, the action of Ashes, but an equal amount of Adam and Arson as characters.

Overall Readability-
It was fast-paced, action-packed, way different, and might be even better than Arson!

My Final Thought-
OhMiGulosh! Arson is going to be so mad when he finds out what a lying conniver Adam is! :) So anxious for the next installment!

AAAAAHHHHHHH!!! I FRELLING LOVE THIS BOOK!

I loved Arson! I thought that book was absolutely amazing and brilliant.

Ashes is…OMW! Words fail me right now. Literally. I’m just dumbfounded and amazed by this book. It’s soooooo incredible!

Okay, so I was suckered into the book by the cover! This happens a lot. I thought the cover to Arson was just frelling gorgeous and I just had to have it. Reading it to discover what a fantastically dark, intriguing world resided inside was fatabulous!

Same thing with Ashes. I. Just. LOVE. This. Cover! It’s beyond brilliant!

Then to crack open the book (or to tap the screen, as it were) and to discover the intricate, dark, compelling loveliness inside? My brain nearly went into seizures each time I had to set down my Kindle. I mean, I am in the middle of a move right now, so I can’t just sit around and read ALL day. Who’s going to pack if I don’t. Fairies? Unlikely.

Emery and Arson are two of my favorite characters so far this year. Yeah. I realize it’s still early yet, but the bar’s been set pretty high here. The way that Mr. Vega penned these two is amazing. There were just enough details to help my flailing brain (stress seriously zaps the brain cells. I’m almost confident that I’m brain dead right now.), but not enough to bog the story down. All the structural elements were there and brilliantly in place! Setting, plot, characterization, voice, and pacing. Great job! Fabulous!

All in all, should you read this? HECK YES!!

Arson is based on a teenage boy named Arson who has this power to make fire with his hands, and he is unsure of where it came from, or how to control it. It goes through a bit on his past history in regards to what has happened to his parents, and gives you insight on who he lives with now, and what that is like for him. In my take on the book it is not until a girl named Emery moves in next door that he begins to think that possibly he has found someone that could be his friend (or possible boyfriend). Although Emery does come with her own set of issues, they seem to be comfortable with each other right from the start (which is not the greatest first impression that Arson could make lol). There is an event that happens towards the end of the novel that builds the reader up to an ending that will definitely leave you wanting to read on and see where the story goes!

I love how Estevan built up to the world that surrounds Arson, and all of the characters in it, I found myself simultaneously despising and feeling sorry for more than one of them at the same time which is brilliant! I truly believe that this is how the first novel that is part of a trilogy is supposed to be written, it is a perfect build up for everything that could happen in the second novel, and I cannot remember when I have ever read a lead in novel like this before! Absolutely a 5 out of 5 in my opinion!!!! If you have not picked up this one yet, what are you waiting for??

Ashes will introduce you to new characters and unimaginable adventure. From the first few pages, you will be immersed in Arson's world as you learn about his past and speculate what it could mean for his future. Just like book one, the story is told through the eyes of many of the characters. There was a character or two whose perspective didn't really add much to the story for me, but I did enjoy seeing things unfold through the different point of views. The changing perspectives and unexpected actions of each character will keep you turning the pages as you try to figure out their true motives. This is a series that keeps you guessing. I love when a book keeps you thinking long after you have finished reading it. It has been interesting watching this series morph from what I though was a Paranormal Romance to more of a Psychological Thriller. It is in a genre all its own.

Estavan Vega is a truly gifted writer. The way he weaves a story together is unique and engaging. I look forward to future writings from this young, talented author.

I received this book in exchange for a honest review. ~WaAr~

The second installment to the Arson trilogy is AMAZING! The author does a wonderful job continuing the action packed, and suspenseful story. I just want to say OMG! The story is left on a cliffhanger. I'm left wanting more and trying to think about what is going to happen. You will fall in love with the characters and be waiting anxiously for the last installment! This book contains romance, action, suspense, horror, and mixed with some supernatural. It is a wonderful YA READ. I can't wait to read more from this amazing author who writes with passion. I look forward to great things from him!

The book starts up 3 months after it left off in Arson. Emery's parents are trying to cope and still trying to find her. Emery and Arson are going through Heck at the Salvation Asylum, which is where the government funds experimentation on people. It seems that everyone has ulterior motives behind their action, especially the government and doctors. What is so special about Emery, Arson, and Adam? What links them together? Will Arson and Emery find a way back toward each other? I give this book a 5 star review since it won't let me give any higher! :) This is a MUST MUST READ!

Wow! doesn't do Ashes justice or Estevan Vega's writing for that matter. Ashes in the second book in the Arson trilogy and if you thought Arson was great (I did) than Ashes will blow you away. It's just that great.

When Arson ended, Emery and Arson were kidnapped. Now, they are in the Asylum and separated. They don't know what's going on with each other, all they know is that the place is horrible. With mad scientists and other horrible things going on, it's a wonder these two will keep their sanity.

But can they escape and find their back to one another? With the secret of Arson's parents revealed (which will blow your mind) and the addition of some other characters, I found myself on a gripping and action-packed journey that I couldn't put down. The sad part is that there is a wallop of a cliffhanger that will have me clamoring for the third book in this trilogy, which is yet to be released.

If you love to read young adult fiction or just like a really, really good suspenseful, urban fantasy, with stellar writing and compelling characters, pick up Ashes! But don't start there - get Arson first so you can get the full experience. Absolutely superb!

built in "Arson", "Ashes" is the book in which Arson and Ember find their fight. This is also the book that fills in a great deal of the character development for both Ember and Arson; as they grow and change. This is also the book where readers get to meet Adam. He is a new character who promises to help Ember out of The Asylum.
This is a very fast paced and intense read, told from many points of view. The differing POV's are written so well however, that they are very easy to follow and only serve to enhance the complexity of this dynamic read.
"Ashes" is also the story that allows readers to come to understand the importance of Arson's powers.
This is a great read and I can't wait for the next installment.

This book was packed with action and of course great characters! I mean I don't understand how the story can get any better! I was so anxious to see how Emery's and Arson's relationship flourished after being kidnapped. The new characters were also a great added bonus! They all had there ticks and tocks. This trilogy is one that is going to be one that I will definitely recommend everyone reads. Not only is this book packed with action but it is also a very emotional and heart grabbing read.

This is the 2nd book in the Arson trilogy, which I'm enjoying for the most part. This book got into a little more sci-fi type stuff which confuses me at times. Despite that, the story is progressing in an interesting direction, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.
