22-year-old Bree Spencer hates prejudice of all kinds – especially the blatant elitism she is subjected to as a resident staffer at her aunt’s exclusive estate, Blackall Manor. So when Bree nearly winds up as road-kill on account of the wealthy Sebastian Templeton, she struggles to reconcile her inexplicable attraction to him. On the surface Sebastian epitomises all that Bree usually despises, yet her draw to him is irrefutable.
Events become decidedly more unusual upon Sebastian’s arrival as a guest at Blackall Manor. Despite her reservations, Bree finds Sebastian intriguing; but his insistence to get to know her triggers a raft of niggling suspicions – heightened by a series of strange dreams and phenomena – until eventually, she learns the truth.
Sebastian is a guardian, a powerful descendant of a sacred ethereal line; and Bree’s uncanny gift has prompted him to find her. But while an anomaly inspired their connection, an ancient prophecy and ethereal lore forbid it. And with Sebastian’s purist brother determined to honour both at any cost, an epic battle with unthinkable stakes could be Bree’s only chance at survival.
K.C. King's love affair with books began with Charlotte's Web when she was eight. A true Aquarian, she's a dreamer whose John Grisham obsession resulted in her choice to study linguistics and law. When she's not writing, travelling, or enjoying cappuccinos in kangaroo cups, you'll probably find her in her own world: Somewhere between Metropolis and Austen's 19th Century England.
All I could think of after finishing this LATE last night was this scene from the Incredible's...
I try to write my reviews immediately after finishing a book so it is all fresh in my head but I am glad I took a few to think about this book. Honestly If I wrote it last night I would have been a blubbering idiot, not that I am not normally but this book was just superb. I didn’t want to start on anything else least anymore intelligence and detail leaks out of my ears. I am actually quite surprised my emotions were not restored last in my dream state so my brain could grasp the extreme complexity of this book (read the book and you will understand that last remark). All I could think of this morning was writing this review so let me stop blabbering and give it a go.
Bree is a 22 year college student who lost her parents and goes to live with her estranged aunt. Her aunt “Mrs. March” is a pompous and pretentious yuppie who had no relationship with her sister because Bree’s mother married, in her opinion, a “lowly blue collar worker” & policeman. None the less you can’t hate her too much because she could have left Bree on her own but instead offered to pay for college in exchange for helping at the manor. Now while I was very intrigued right off the bat by the book I found it a little rough in the beginning because of the superficial & proper way she had to speak with her aunt. I am telling you this now because it's not like that through the whole book, quite honestly it’s not long until Sebastian enters the book and stirs up the pot. Sebastian *sigh* wonderfully perfect, gorgeous, and charismatic actually rubs Bree the wrong way at first meeting, she can’t stand the “old money” attitude and his car immediately piques her nerves. As their romantic journey begins Bree begins to suspect he is different and her intuition is that that there is something amazingly different about Sebastian, and there is...
There is only one more detail I am going to give you about the book and it is from the description of the book.
“Sebastian is a guardian, a powerful descendant of a sacred ethereal line; and Bree’s uncanny gift has prompted him to find her. But while an anomaly inspired their connection, an ancient prophecy and ethereal lore forbid it. And with Sebastian’s purist brother determined to honour both at any cost, an epic battle with unthinkable stakes could be Bree’s only chance at survival.”
K.C. King
Ok the reason I am doing that is because I am just not as smart as Ms. King, I am not a writer and King is a master at the details. I can’t even begin to explain anything else to you about this book. King has a VERY vivid imagination and is truly an artist with the writing in this story. I am not a “thinker” when it comes to my Paranormal Romance, I want to get lost in a fantasy world not analyze it. And while sometimes the details went over my head a little King always brought me back down to earth. I appreciate the painstaking details that went into this story and have no clue how King created this completely unique world without going insane. I can guess the same way Tolkien could take you into an amazing journey with the details to provide a very vivid picture. And furthermore I absolutely CANNOT believe this is her first novel. Surely she has written before this?
Bottom line this may not be for everyone but It certainly was for me. I would not pigeon hole this book and call it young-adult, paranormal romance or anything I would just say it is incredible and Try it out what have you got to lose? It is an absolute steal at $.99.
Thank you K.C. King for the amazing journey into the tri-realms!
3 hours later I'm still thinking about it.... OH and one more thing, I don't usually do spoilers but I just have to say Bravo K.C. King, I am giving you a standing ovation for ....... click on that AFTER you read the book!

I will put down some initial thoughts as I finished reading Anomaly, but I will hold off on rating it...
I couldn't really tell you about the book, cause I still don't really get it. I'm confused. I spent nearly the whole book trying to work out what the hell I was reading about - balance, mantle, scions, coterie, scions etc etc. I don't usually read books to have to think so hard about so it was different for me - I usually read to escape reality and live vicariously through others and the worlds created by authors for us and this one just seemed to go *woosh* straight over my head.
I thought Sebastian was dreamy (except for all the amber burning and scorching lips - I just couldn't get into those bits) and Bree was kind hearted and selfless (she seemed so kept together, but I still don't know where, why and when she fell in love with Sebastian) Weird weird weird book.
I had to really force myself to keep reading because so much of the story went over my head, and this is by no means a reflection of the author, it just shows how embarassingly dumb I am. I have gone to Amazon and purchased the second book and am about to start. Wish me luck!
I really liked this book, it is a good and original story. I really love original stories and this book is so different. When I started this book the first thing that catched my attention was the writing style, it is slightly different from most other writing styles, but I really liked it. This book is about Bree who lives with her aunt in a giant manor, which is a sort of hotel where quest can stay. Bree helps her aunt out in the manor and in return her aunt pays for her study. Then Sebastian comes there as a quest, he looks like the sort of rich person Bree hates, but ofcourse she falls in love with him. So the books begins pretty standard, except for the living in a huge manor part, girl meets boy and falls in love and the boy turns out to be some supernatural being. Except that that's where this book is really different. The supernatural in this book is really different from other books. And with really different I mean uncomparable and something I never even thought about of using as a spernatural gift/creature. Belive me it is really different and I am not even sure if I should call it supernatural.
The first half of the book is thus pretty standard. I kept reading, but it misses that feel of I-have-to-keep-reading-this-book. The nice writing style and the promise of something supernatural happening kept me reading. Then halfway through the book it get's really confusing. Most of the time you already have a feel for what kind of supernatural creature/elements are going to be introduced. But here I just felt confused and I had no idea what was happening. This stage took some time, but then finally we get to know what Sebastian is. I just repeat it again, it is really original!
I really like the originality of the story and the supernatural. And this is what makes this book so good for me. Too bad there are some points that I didn't like. Again this books contains almost love at first sight and I think the relationship between Bree and Sebastian develops a bit too fast. Altough the author does try to give you a feel of time passing and shorty describes some days they spend together. It still felt a bit too rushed and fast happening. And
I liked the characters in this book. We don't get a whole lot of characters to know. But the charcater we get to know are described just enough to get a feel for most of them. We do get to know Bree and how she at first sturggles with the her feelings for Sebastian and the strange things that happen. And then how she gradually learns to deal with everything. She comes over as a very strong character and I really liked her. I was a bit unsure what to think of Sebastian, he comes over as a standard rich boy and has everything money can buy. I know he loves Bree, but further I don't feel like I really know him. I am intrigued about his past and history, at the end of the book we get to know a bit more of him and I began to like him more.
To conclude a very good and original story. I found that the relationship between Bree and Sebastian develops a bit too fast and the book is a bit complicated a confusing at times. I also like the writing style of this book and already bought the second book, because I want to know what happens next. And know everything is clear I am sure book 2 will be even better.
It was so good, keep me wanting for more. A lot more.
I bought the first book just because my sister told me (not the same sister who made me read Nora Roberts, of course...). The book is beyond my knowledge. Thank God for the oxford dictionary in the Kindle, 'cuz I didn't understand half the words in the first 5 chapters. It was so different from what I used to read. But that's exactly why I keep reading, the flow and the writting was really beautiful. I just have to finish the damm book!
This book it's about Bree and the misteryous Sebastian. I have read books where the main character just keep saying "I don't understand anything!" and I was thinking "you're such an idiot...", but while Bree don't understand the mistery behind Sebastian, I really have no idea what the hell was happening! And that was soooo refreshing. It keep me reading and I have to read again the pages of the book cuz I was sooo lost but it was so beautifully written that I really don't mind.
This story it's different, nothing like the other books that I read. I have to say THANK YOU K.C. KING!!!! This is such an interesting book and you don't have to used the stupid love triangles or anything like that to keep the story flowing. Thank you for making such an amazing book. Thank you for teaching me new words and new ways to express myself.
I have to keep buying this books.. I don't really care what I have to spend on amazon books. You're worth every penny.
When I saw the summary for "Anomaly" as well as the 5 star reviews, I knew that I had to read this book. I even went to far a to order the second book in the series because I knew I would want to continue reading it. Unfortunately for me, this book did not deliver although the plot had great potential.
Breanna is working for her Aunt at Blackhall Manor. Mrs. March is quite prejudiced and shows her disdain for people she feels beneath her including the union of Bree's dead parents. However, when a mysterious guest arrives, Bree tries to no avail to avoid her attraction to him. She knows something is different she just does not know what. Sebastian Templeton is a guardian in the Ethereal. A union between he and Bree can cause calamitous unbalances in our world. Despite the risks they cannot stay away from each other. Sounds wonderful huh?
So, what went wrong? Well, the first 56% of the book was simply boring to put it nicely. The characters were not very interesting and the main character, Breanna kept fainting, falling into darkness, becoming ill.....etc. scene after scene. I wanted to shout, "Enough already!" Then, the explanations droned on and on to the point that I almost stopped reading the book. Then, toward the middle of the book, things began to get a little more interesting with the introduction of the protagonist, Alaik. However, that was short lived and I found myself bored again.
Finally, I decided that there are far too many great books out there that I can read than be bored with one that I truly did not even find mediocre. So, I gave up!(something I rarely do). There is a series by Rachel Caine entitled, "The Weather Warden Series" that has a similar theme but done with such excitement and expertise that your head will be reeling. Sorry, Ms.King, this book just was not for me. However, I am a firm believer that people should read books for themselves and not be swayed by any one reviewer; so, with that being said, read this book for yourself and decide.
I wanted to like this book, but it just wasn’t for me.
Bree was an okay character, but I just could connect with her. I don’t know why, she didn’t annoy me or anything, I just didn’t find her story interesting.
The storyline in this was okay, there was nothing horribly wrong with it, but I just couldn’t get into the story at all. I found all the terms they used confusing, and really just could not understand what the characters were going on about when they started talking about Guardians, Fledgelings, Ethereals, Balance etc. the whole thing just confused me, and no matter how many times I went back over it, it just wouldn’t go in.
There was romance in this one, but I just couldn’t get interested in that either. I was also surprised by
The end to this wasn’t bad either; I just couldn’t get into the story, so I couldn’t really appreciate it. At the moment I don’t think I’ll continue with the series. 4 out of 10.
So I was drawn to this series by the 5 star ratings, great reviews, the seduction of some other paranormal storyline other than the too often told werewolves, vampires, angels, demons & fae. I even purchased the next in the series. KINDLE AND E-READERS GET A SAMPLE 1ST BEFORE BUYING!! 1: Frustratingly confusing 2: Love story is unbelievable 3: Slow & unnecessarily wordy. The main character is likable, the setting is gorgeous and the plot has tons of potential! Frustrated I wasted my time.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Twenty-two-year-old Bree Spencer battles elitism and prejudice as a staffer at Blackall Manor. When she nearly becomes roadkill at the hands of wealthy Sebastian Templeton, she’s conflicted by her attraction to him. Sebastian is no ordinary man—he’s a guardian descended from a sacred ethereal lineage. Bree’s unique gift draws him to her, but their bond challenges ancient prophecies, forcing them into a perilous fight for survival.
It started off ok, but I just found it a bit childlike somehow. Everything was told to you - you didn't get to deduce anything yourself really.
Flowery words etc seemed to be being used just for the sake of it most of the time and so often didn't really create anything other than an annoyingly long paragraph to describe something simple. This is not evocative description I am talking about here but unnecessary amounts of words.
There is a trust issue between the H/H early on which I found very unrealistic - or our heroine is pretty weak willed. She also spent a lot of time sulking or passed out in her room in the first half that I have read which was irritating.
Events passed relatively quickly, but not in a fast-paced, action-packed good way...more in the fact that lots of things were crammed in but where additional background info or description would have been good, for once we were not given the extensive descriptive writing but a short succinct summary of the events.
Also the supernatural elements seemed very complicated in their description although not really anything new at the same time - perhaps the complicated description was an attempt to make it seem something different?
All in all a disappointment really and I don't think I can be bothered to finish it - if I do, it will definitely be by skimming.
This is an imaginative take on the aether type of dual planes and pretty well done.
What I particularly liked in this book was the writer's ability to express/describe the atmosphere and emotions through the beauty of vocabulary and language. Truly beautiful (in my humble opinion). I will say that I expect some people found the type of narration in this novel incredibly annoying - for me it simply brought the reader closer to the characters.
The use of alternative planes and dream walking was nicely done. I did find, however, that perhaps this was over explained and made to detailed which left me at a loss and a bit of a sag in the story. I consider this could have been simplified to give the story a more even flow.
The characters, principally Bree and Sebastian were well rounded and fleshed out. The beauty of male characters I find rather stereotyped and I'm fairly sick of male 'beauty' being constantly shoved in my face in all these YA books (and maybe not just YA). Let's get over that please. Sigh of boredom.
The support characters are find, and there are just enough of them to maintain some freshness in the novel.
The end of the book carried off pretty well, leaving us with enough imperative to read on to the next novel without the agony, horror and anger of a cliffhanger.
I thought it was YA but was mistaken. Not because of any romance scenes but the reading level. I knew the words but was thankful I read it on a kindle because well over a dozen times I had to look up the words meaning. I felt like she sat and purposely used the thesaurus to find rather ridiculous words that weren't necessary. A good 10-15% of the book could have been count (honestly About 30%) it wasn't necessary. But the idea is interesting. I am more than an avid reader as English major in creative writing hoping to get into the world of publishing I analyze books differently now but I have to say I think the author has potential but the wording over complicated the situation and much of that left me confused, and annoyed. I was lost several times in the book and found that I had this urge to have requested a guide book to go along with this novel.
I was not impressed and based on all the high ratings I was hoping to be. I think if the author chooses not to use 50 words when 5 would suffice her book would be a lot more readable
I love when I am proven wrong. I love it even more when it's unexpected. I entered into this book with the delusion that it was merely just another YA genre novel with diluted vocabulary, cliched vernacular, sordid love triangle, etc. Please, don't mistake me, I love not having to think while reading. I adore the genre, it is my guilty pleasure thinly veiled by a desire to be able to recommend novels to students. What I adore more is something so unexpected, so fresh and thought provoking that it captures you, enraptures you and leaves you wanting more. That's what King provides here. I am, for once, at a loss for words. Perhaps it's my insane desire to devour the next installment in the saga which is patiently waiting for me to finish typing so I can begin. In short, read it. Then promptly thank King for providing you with immense pleasure so far replaced from the typical whining and pining so commonly found in the genre and replacing it with a more evolved experience.
I wanted to like this book and even after finishing I'm not even sure whether or not I did. It was an extremely difficult read. The language used was half from this century and half from the 1800's, I kept having to look up words in the dictionary. I find it highly unreasonable that the girl in the story would understand and use the words she used, let alone the YA the book is geared towards. It's not enjoyable to keep having to stop and use a dictionary to figure out what being said and I suspect that most people dont even do that, they just skip the word and understand less than I did. The other difficult thing was that there were so many confusing and highly detailed passages that I was mostly lost during the read. I had no idea where she was most of the time in the settings between the realms. I think it could have been a really good story if the author didnt make it so unbelievably over-complicated. I'm not even going to bother with the 2nd and 3rd books.
I am a compulsive reader. Generally once I've started a book I can't not finnish it, but that will not be a problem in this case. Most of the reviews I read were very complimentary of the author's use of vocabulary. To me it felt like she was sitting at the computer with a thesaurus packing as many big words into a sentance as she could in order to disguise the fact that there really wasn't much of a plot. The style of writing also didn't mesh well with the genre. Its a YA paranormal romance, not 18th century english literature. Mixed in with all the flowery language were sentances like "What a tool." and something along the lines of "oh crap." The two main character's relationship didn't feel genuine. I didn't really feel any connection to them or the story, and having made it through about 60% of the book I am calling it a day and moving onto something new.
Original. Very wordy. My vocabulary was definitely challenged. it was not a typical teen swooning romance. This story had some backbone and originality I feel. I was a bit confused at times because I felt the author left it up to the reader too much to try and read between the lines at a lot of points. This lead to not always explaining things well.
The style of writing is refreshing. She didn't just write sentences. She wove them together in interesting patterns and new designs. The wording read much like that of a book written in a different era. One where language was an art form, not just a skill. I learned a few new ones words as well.
I read this in a day I was so hooked. The story does a very good job of transporting you to another world.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm 60% done with Anomaly: At the beginning i was so hopeful about this book,it was a wonderful and sucked you right in..That is until you get half way through it, then it kind of looses its fizzle. I have found myself skipping huge sections of this book just to get to the meatier sections. Dont get me wrong i love how she throws in the SAT words and makes you think..but i just dont know if i can literally get myself to finish this book..
Now: I CANT DO IT!!! I simply CANNOT make myself read even one more word of this book without forcing myself. Therefore i willingly give in!!!
Ok, so this is the oddest review I've ever written because I cant really place how I feel about this book. It had moments of brilliance and moments where I just rolled my eyes. I didn't mind the writing style, but there were times when the large vocabulary felt forced and unnatural. There was too much energy talk and sometimes I felt like the book was written for yoga enthusiast. The end, though, got me. It was unexpected and brought in characters that intrigue me. I've decided to buy the second book, which says something. I'm hoping now that all the foundation has been laid, the story can focus less on the description of the tri-realms and more on the character and plot development.
K.C. King has a gift with words. I’m not sure how I came across this book but I’m so glad I did.
The story of Breanna & Sebastian is quite intriguing. The idea that dreams are something more of a temporal conduit to an ethereal reality as suggested in the preface is quite original. The love that these two share between them, is so magical and addicting, I just couldn’t get enough.
K.C. King is a wonderful author and I just love her blog. Her talented writing as well as her Cappuccino in Kangaroo cups are so drool worthy in my book.
I liked the idea of the plot, but the authors over analysis and explanation of who and what Bastian and the other Guardians are becomes too complicated to follow. I thought maybe I missed something along the way so I backtracked slightly no...Bree jumps into Bastians world and the explanation is so scientific I found the story took a back seat and I was bored. I want to know what happens to the characters, but don't know if I can sit through another two books filled with the authors complicated explanations of who and what the Guardians and Scions are supposed to be.
I truly enjoyed this book! It wasn't your average YA paranormal, it had a unique story, and some interesting characters. Yes, there was a love triangle, and a somewhat difficult heroine, but I loved it!! There was grammar/vocab usage not typically found in this genre, and it was super refreshing. I will admit that the quickness the love falling was eye rollable, but it doesn't matter, because the story panned out well.
At first I thought....maybe it's me? This is the third book in a row I've tried to read and couldn't finish. But then I read Frost's new book and realized it wasn't me! :) So I couldn't even remember who or what this book was about when I tried to go back to it. That's enough of a sign for me.
