I honestly don’t know why so many people are giving this book such a hard time?
I loved this book!! It was a very sweet story!
A lot of people are saying that Melinda acted too immature, in that regard at first, I did tend to agree a little, because I did think there were a few times when she acted rather childish which was unfair to Evan because she wasn’t considering all the pressure he was under, but she did get better though.
I thought that this book, was a really good story portraying, how easy it is to fall in love, and fall in love with the idea of marriage, and kids and everything being perfect…but when it actually happens it’s usually not exactly what you expected especially if your still in that “love is a fantasy” stage which Melinda was…which was understandable considering her age, and background. When Melinda left everything to go be with Evan she thought it would be clear that she wanted to marry him, and that once Evan knew that, that there would be no delaying getting married, however it didn’t end up to be what she expected, she has to wait, has hard and bumpy places along the road, and on the way, she learns what true love is, that it’s being patient and kind, and putting the other persons needs before yours, being willing to wait, and to compromise, and she realizes that love is hard, it’s a lot of work, and it can stress you out and make you want to cry, and make you want to pull your hair out all at the same time. But her and Evan also realize that love is so so worth every trial, every moment they waited, every time they sacrificed, that love is beautiful, perfect, and a amazing and wonderful gift from God!
This is why to me this story was a beautiful and perfect story about becoming more mature, and realizing what true love is!
Maybe I liked it so much because I can relate,
I can’t honestly say I haven’t wanted more than anything that love is nothing but a perfect fairy tale, and to a degree I still do believe it can be. But I also realize, just because you love someone doesn’t mean everything is always going to be perfect, it’s hard, it hurts, and it sometimes makes you feel a little nuts, but it’s so worth the wait, to find the right one, who is the Lords will for your life. (Personally I’m still waiting to find out who that is for me…but I know in the end all the tears, and all the worrying I’ll end up an old maid, will pass, and will have been so worth waiting for one day)

It's not very often I run into a main character who I'm truly not fond of. I didn't care for Evan until maybe the last 2 chapters? All he cared about was his job and while he said he loved Melinda I didn't see a single instance where he ever showed evidence of it. He was always too busy and putting everything else and everyone before her. When a woman makes advances on him he just tries to keep her at arms length, but continues to spend time with her. He never once seems to consider that maybe he should actually act like a man in love.

I like Melinda. She knew what she wanted and was willing to quit her job when she thought Evan might have been injured or killed. She may not have gone about things the best way, but at least she was winning to act. She stood up for herself and made her thoughts and feelings known.

I never really understood why all of the other lady employees didn't care for Melinda and treated her badly. Aside from older Emma there was no other lady to show her some decency?

I liked the sitting again and that they were trying to build a horse track at the same time as a horse racing course. Then the mystery of the President and his wife going to Bridal Veil kept things interesting.

It seemed like no one was happy in this book which was really a bummer.

This is the 2nd novel in the Bridal Veil Island series. I did enjoy it more than the first book in the series but can't rate it higher than 3 stars because once again I did not like the main character of the novel.
Early in the novel, Bridal Veil Island and the surrounding area was hit by a hurricane and it was interesting reading about that and its impact on the area.
There is a definite Christian message in the novel and I did appreciate that. However, the main character who was in love with a young man seemed to be very selfish and demanding---especially of the young man she loves. The whole romance between Melinda and Evan was tiresome to me because of Melinda's impatience and immaturity. Two of the characters in the novel did bring about a surprise at the ending which added to my interest.
I've read dozens of novels by Tracie Peterson but this series does not seem up to the par of other series I have read by her.

This book was not my favorite…but it wasn’t terrible! The back and forth of each one had me confused and bored. Either you’re getting married or you’re not! Figure it out! Sit down and talk without arguing. Please! For the sake of my sanity, just sit down and let one another talk! 😭

I also didn’t like how she went to the island without asking him if he was okay with it, and got mad when he suggested it was an inconvenience. Evan got all the faults! He was in love, trying his best, and he got the blame. She showed up, unannounced -although, she was scared for him-, did nothing but cause arguments between them! In her head, she was never in the wrong. And I REALLY can’t stand people like that.

I understand she was in love too, and wanted marriage, but to push THAT hard for it…I just don’t understand. Maybe I will one day, but come on Melinda! Get your head out of the gutter. PLEASE.

Not really a fan. Predictable. It is one of those stories where things are not as they seem……..other reviewers didn’t like Evan because he was hesitant to marry until he could provide. To me that is true love, when a person can set aside their own desires for the good of the one they love. Melinda on the other hand was spoiled. TrueType a good example of how a woman bases decisions on feelings and a man thinks, then makes decisions.

I actually listened to this on Recorded Books, Audio. The reader, Kate Forbes did an excellent job. A love story of pathos and entertainment, stands on it's own merit but I did not like it quite as well as the first one in the series.

Surprising

What started out as an estranged romance ended up with intrigue and questions as how to know God's will for our lives. I identified easily with the characters because they had some of the same flaws I do.

This is book 2 of the series, but can be read without reading the others. This one I enjoyed, the plot and characters were credible enough and there wasn't the silliness of the first book in the series.

This book started off slowly but got pretty interesting in the last few chapters. They threw a plot to murder the president of the united states in there and that added to an otherwise average story.

Picked it up for the cover and island setting. While the setting is 10/10, the plot points were belabored, the Christianity a bit much, and on the whole clunkily written. I am intrigued by the setting and may read the others in the series but not a fave.
Update: the other 2 books were not better. The dialogue was super awkward. Ie. “I am certain teaching you and Thomas will give me great pleasure.” “Flora and what?… Are those more women?”

Story Description:

Baker Publishing Group|August 1, 2012|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0887-4

A story of romance and intrigue on a beautiful island resort from two bestselling authors, Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller.

When Melinda Colson’s employer announces they’ll be leaving Bridal Veil Island to return to their home in Cleveland, Melinda hopes her beau, Evan, will propose. But Evan isn’t prepared to make an offer of marriage until he knows he can support a wife and family. Evan works as the assistant gamekeeper on Bridal Veil but hopes to be promoted soon. Letters strengthen their love, but Melinda remains frustrated at being apart from the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Then she learns of a devastating hurricane in Bridal Veil and knows she must give up her position as a lady’s maid and make her way back to Evan.

The destruction on Bridal Veil is extensive, meaning every available person is needed to help with cleanup and repairs. Melinda finds a new job on the island, but Evan seems even busier than before, meaning she still never gets to see him. Has she given her heart to the wrong man? And when Melinda overhears a vicious plot against President McKinley, who is scheduled to visit the island, is Evan the one she should turn to? Will Melinda and Evan ever get the chance to stand at the front of a church and promise “to love and cherish?”

My Review:

Melinda Colson works as a lady’s maid for Mrs. Mifflin in their home in Cleveland, Ohio. Currently they are vacationing at Bridal Veil Resort where they have a beautiful home but Mrs. Mifflin refers to it as a “cottage.” Evan Tarlow works on the island as the assistant gamekeeper and he and Melinda are in love. Melinda wants to marry Evan right away but Evan refuses as he wants to ensure that he can fully support a wife and a family before he commits himself.

Mr. and Mrs. Mifflin decide to return home to Cleveland two weeks early as they are expecting some prestigious company and Melinda is just beside herself. This means she has two weeks less to spend with Evan. She finely breaks the news to him that she will be returning to Cleveland the following day and they promise each other that they’ll write constantly.

While in Cleveland, Melinda learns there has been a devastating hurricane that has hit Bridal Veil Resort and she is totally panic stricken that Evan has been injured or worse. Much to Mrs. Mifflin’s surprise, Melinda quits her job as her house lady, packs up her bag and returns to Bridal Veil Island. Has Evan been injured?

Melinda finds a job on the island and is pressuring Evan to marry but he remains committed that he won’t marry until he can support her and a family. He is expecting to be promoted and hopes the promotion comes through or he won’t be able to afford to marry and he is busier than he was before and has little time to see Melinda. She is worried that perhaps she has chosen the wrong man.

News comes that President McKinley and his wife will be visiting Bridal Veil Island and shortly thereafter, Melinda learns of an assassination plot against the President during his trip to Bridal Veil. Who should Melinda turn to for advice, her boss, Evan, or one of the investors?

This was a beautifully written story that captured my heart right from the beginning. The love between Melinda and Evan was so real. The descriptive narrative in the book allowed me to picture in my mind’s eye Bridal Veil Island very clearly which always endears me even more to a story. I felt apart of the people on the island. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone.

::My Thoughts::
I really couldn't get into this book. There are snippets here and there in each chapter that are interesting, but I just wasn't feeling the characters connections with each other. It seemed like I was struggling to stay interested.
Rather than a love that should bond them together it seemed more as if they felt their relationship was a chore. Neither Melinda nor Evan have the urgency to see each other and despite them being busy with their jobs in the story their reunions were never as sweet as you'd expect from two people in love.
I felt as if Melinda wanted Evan purely to save herself because she wanted the married life, and Evan loved Melinda only because of her pushing. And boy oh boy was she pushing.
Melinda was a respectable lady's maid which was a great job historically speaking when you had no parents and were down on your luck. However not really liking her job and wanting nothing more than to marry Evan and become his wife and the mother to his children she quits her job in search of him when she finds out there has been a hurricane.
Evan is a gamekeeper who is not ready to settle down and has enough on his plate working to provide for himself. He cares for Melinda, but knows there is no way he could support a wife and children on his salary.
Toward the end they come to a mutual understanding of each other, but I still didn't feel their connection to one another.
The characters themselves felt real enough, but surprisingly I liked neither Evan nor Melinda. They seemed to set on their own agenda's and just didn't have the passion one expects from a romance novel.
I liked Melinda in the beginning, but by the middle of the novel I was fed up with her constant pushing and whining. Evan was a logical thinker, but too focused on work and not enough on love.
However the historical aspect of this novel was good. Despite being the second book in the Bridal Veil series it was a great stand alone book. You don't at all feel lost or left out. I myself haven't read the first installment in the Bridal Veil series.

Tracie Peterson And Judith Miller in their new book, “To Love and Cherish” Book Two in the Bridal Veil Island series published by Bethany House brings us to Georgia in 1898.

From the back cover: Escape to a Beautiful, Historic Island Resort

Bridal Veil Island, Georgia 1898

Melinda Colson has been waiting months for Evan, the assistant gamekeeper at the Bridal Veil Island resort, to propose. Without an offer of marriage, she must return to Cleveland with the family she works for as a lady’s maid.

Evan isn’t afraid of hard work, and he hopes to be promoted soon. He wants to marry Melinda–but not until he’s sure he can support her and a family.

Letters strengthen their romance until a devastating storm strikes the island. With no word from Evan, Melinda knows she must journey back to Bridal Veil in search of her beloved.

But the hurricane isn’t the last calamity to shake up Bridal Veil. Melinda finds a new job on the island, but still no offer of marriage comes her way. Has she given her heart to the wrong person? Will she ever find a man to love and cherish?

No doubt about it I like this series. First we have the island which seems like such a wonderful place to visit, hang out and relax. Then we have these wonderful relationships where it is not easy between the couple due to various circumstances; in this book it is their stations that separate them. And then, of course, there is the hurricane. “To Love and Cherish” is a marvelous love story all wrapped up in an adventure. Ms. Peterson and Ms. Miller really know how to weave a story that entertains and brings you history as well. Tracie Peterson And Judith Miller have written a well done novel that I recommend highly.

Book Summary: Escape to a Beautiful, Historic Island Resort, Bridal Veil Island, Georgia 1898 Melinda Colson has been waiting months for Evan, the assistant gamekeeper at the Bridal Veil Island resort, to propose. Review: I tried real hard to like this book. I gave it time and I mulled over how Melinda must feel and Evan must feel but at the end of the day I was lukewarm. I did grow to like Melinda the best and thought that Evan was just so bland. He may have had the best intentions but really only worked to please her with words when she did not get what she wanted. Even when she was happy he seemed to snub her at times. I think both these authors are talented and this was an awkward plot. Where do you go with a topic for a long period of time with a part time meeting place? Make the female character that starts out exceedingly responsible and mature do something flighty? That did not fit. I can understand how others would find this to be great because all things aside Melinda was smart and had been wealthy. She understood the ways of the rich although her mother taught her kindness and grace. There were many places about prayer and how we fail to do this with the big decisions. That was a grounding reminder that Melinda acts as I do.
I would like to Bethany House Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Melinda and Lawrence Colson’s lives change drastically in the 1890’s when their parents die in an accident and it is discovered that their father has lost their family’s fortune. Melinda is forced to seek employment as a lady’s maid. While accompanying her employers, the Mifflins, to Bridal Veil Island off the Georgia coast, Melinda meets Evan Tarlow, the assistant gamekeeper at the resort. By 1898, Evan and Melinda have spent four seasons getting acquainted on the island, but Evan has still not proposed marriage. Melinda returns to Cleveland with the Miffflin’s wondering if she and Evan have a future together.

When word reaches Cleveland that Bridal Veil has been severely damaged in a hurricane, Melinda quits her job and heads south to find out if Evan is safe. Her brother Lawrence accompanies her and takes along a race horse he has recently won in a gambling match.
They find Evan safe, but extremely busy with repairs and clean-up to get the resort island ready for the winter tourist season. He wants to marry Melinda, but not until he can support her and provide for a family. She and Lawrence both find jobs on the island and settle into the hectic routine.

In the course of the season, both Evan and Melinda are pursued by other suitors, and have no time together due to their busy schedules. In addition, President McKinley plans to visit the island, magnifying their responsibilities. A plot against the President’s life, Lawrence’s gambling scheme gone bad, and blackmail further complicate matters. An interesting conclusion shows how God works good in all circumstance for those who trust Him.

This is Book 2 in the Bridal Veil Island series. I liked Book 1 (To Have and to Hold) better, as parts of this story seemed to bog down. Book 3 (To Honor and Trust) is to be released soon. Each story stands alone, but there are a few characters that interconnect them.

Melinda Colson and Evan Tarlow are in love. And have been for some time without progressing towards Melinda's desirable goal of marriage. Melinda is sure that they are ready to wed while Evan is convinced that he must be able to financially support a family before he can propose. Thus, a stalemate ensues and Melinda, a lady's maid by occupation, once again leaves Bridal Veil Island to serve her mistress and anxiously await the next visit to the island. When Melinda hears that a hurricane has damaged Bridal Veil Island, she casts caution aside and leaves her position to find Evan. Evan is safe, but he once again stifles Melinda's efforts to push him toward marriage. As Melinda and Evan's relationship struggles, danger lurks nearby in rumors of a presidential assassination plot. Will Melinda and Evan's love survive?

To Love and Cherish by Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller is a sweet love story, but I recommend renting it from the library before purchasing. Personally, I found it difficult to connect with the two main characters, Evan and Melinda, as they did not seem realistic to me and I never came to like either one. I actually liked the supporting characters better than the main ones. I also felt like the plot moved a little slow and even though it picked up in the end, I was never riveted to it. That being said, I did like the somewhat unique plot of a love relationship that was already established and needed to be maintained while waiting to move to the next level.

Ever feel that some men are so obtuse you wonder how they managed to get up in the morning? To Love and Cherish by Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller tell the love story of an impatient and impoverished Melinda Colson and the gamekeeper at Bridal Veil, Evan Tarlow.

Melinda Colson lost her parents and her societal position all at once. On her parent’s death, financial ruin came unexpectedly. Melinda becomes a ladies maid for an esteemed lady of society who happens to be friends with President McKinley’s wife. Melinda accompanies Mrs. Miffler to Bridal Veil every year where Melinda and Evan are reunited again. To complicate matters, Mrs. Miffler doesn’t want Melinda to ever marry. Evan declares his love, but not his intentions. His obtuseness frustrated me as a reader. His character through most of the book lacks emotion. I really had hoped that Melinda would find someone more passionate and practical as the writers introduced other characters into Melinda’s life.

It isn’t until near the end of the book when Melinda is in danger that Evan gets over his issues of waiting until he can provide for her well-being and finally begins to act like someone totally in love. Melinda’s brother also complicates the story, but in a good way. He begins as a reprobate and ends a hero.

Overall, the novel began very slowly. It lost my interest until about halfway through the novel when things began to heat up and emotions grew stronger. I finally got to see tension instead of sifting through mundane details. Afterwards, I could hardly put it down.

I gave the novel three stars.

This was just an OK book for me. It did get some really great reviews on Amazon and B&N. But it just didn't do anything for me. It started out so slow, I actually put it down for a couple days and started another book. I then picked it back up again and it did get a little better half way through. But I could "take it or leave it" at any point during the read.

The character development was alright, but I didn't really feel connected to any characters. I actually kind of disliked them. I thought Melinda was whiny and spoiled and even though I think she was suppose to come across that way - she just really rubbed me the wrong way. And Evan, I just didn't like right from the very beginning. I thought he was unfeeling and stand-offish. I wouldn't want him for a boyfriend. I really hate it when I read a book and don't like any of the main characters.

I thought the story-line (what was the storyline again?) took way too long to develop. There were a few exciting parts but not enough to flip me. Also I wasn't really feeling the whole Island vibe. I didn't feel like I was right there. I kinda felt like I was in my living room chair.

I am really sorry to be giving this book a so-so review because I really like Tracie Peterson. I have read several of her other books and enjoyed them very much! Judith Miller, I have never read before but have been wanting to. This book didn't change my mind about the authors. I still give them full credit for being excellent authors!
And... You might love this book! It just wasn't my cup of tea.
