The Journey Beyond Life covers what most of the world knows about the next life, then carries us one step further, with additional knowledge of our eternal self and family relationships that will strengthen our love for our Savior, erase fear of death in the reality of the other side and increase our commitment to live a better life.
These are actual near-death experiences which were told to the authors. The intent is one of spiritual enlightenment rather than clinical accuracy. From these experience we can learn many things. One woman was able to perceive how her actions affected everyone around her, and that trials stack up like stairs. Each trial prepares us for the next one. Sometimes the veil is very thin. One man learned in the Temple that every spirit that comes to earth has a guardian angel, whose duty it is to keep a record of the individual's life parentage, the conditions under which it was born, and so on. When the individual's life is completed, the guardian angel's mission ends. Eddie Rickenbacker said, " You may have heard that dying is unpleasant, but don't believe it. Dying is the sweetest, tenderest, most (wonderful) sensation I have ever experienced." I loved reading this book! It mentioned that we have more friends and relatives on the other side of the veil than we do here on earth. The thing we need to do is love God, and love our neighbors as we love ourselves, and repent of the things we do wrong.
I reread this book from my shelf to reacquaint myself with LDS perspective on the afterlife and how it differs, or not, with non LDS books on the subject. This was written in 1988, several years before Betty Eadie's book made on huge splash on our cultural conscience.
The prologue starts with a jolt as it recounts a female BYU student recovering from a leg injury caused by a skiing accident. She contacts a staph infection and lies on a plaid couch with a fever over 105. She dies, enters the spirit world and after some discussion, finally decides to return to her pain-ridden body with a vision of her future before her.
This is a carefully researched discussion of death, contact with spirits, the spirit world environment and spirit world activities from an LDS context. It's stories were similar to non LDS versions without scriptures and prophet's comments about the afterlife. Good reading
This is a great collection of stories, backed by quotes from LDS General Authorities about the afterlife. The book really brings to life, the afterlife and broadens your mind on the importance of what we do in life. Reading this book and pondering on its content has certainly strengthened my testimony. This is also a great reference book, I am sure I will be turning to it time and time again.
Guess what? There is no volume Two. Not sure if this was written to capitalize upon the demand for books about NDEs but they did a good job and I’m glad I read it. It includes numerous NDEs not found elsewhere, great analysis and even better scriptural and doctrinal support for what is shared. Even though I picked it up at Deseret Book, I wonder why they didn’t publish it. In fact, the only two books from Deseret on my list are both very timid about the subject. Is reading about NDEs considered not acceptable in the LDS church? You decide for yourself. I like the study guides or question and answer section at the end of each chapter. The doctrine and the supporting scriptures are presented there while the interesting NDE stories compose the chapters. This is a good book. I enjoyed it. I recommend it. I wonder if the other book they published together called When the Spirit Whispers is considered volume two.
This is written by a former LDS institute teacher and an LDS associate of his. It is powerful and well written. I learned so much about the Spirit World from this. Some of the things I learned: (1) all missionaries in the Spirit World receive their callings from Priesthood leaders. A worthy man in mortality is called from priesthood leaders from beyond the veil. (2)There is only a thin veil between Paradise and Spirit Prison; it's a real barrier and only those who are worthy get to pass through it.(3) There are ten kinds of activities or work that spirits do to progress in the Spirit World, and all but one of them involve service.
This book answers many questions and to me it was rather fascinating and more comprehensive in answering questions about the Spirit World than most Near Death books do.
Great book. Well documented with prophets testimonies and personal experiences to support doctrine of the spirit world. It was enlightening and helped me look at passing from mortality to the spirit world in a new light.
Somewhat comforting to read having recently lost a close loved one. It kind of goes more into depth of speculation than I cared for, but I kept reading anyway.
