A Sock Is a Pocket for Your A Pocket Book is a whimsical pocket full of bells and balloons, ice cream and mud, giggles and hugs. Elizabeth Garton Scanlon's delightful verse is captured in Robin Preiss Glasser's energetic artwork, which follows four families through a busy day exploring the surprising ins and outs of the world's pockets. This special book will leave readers young and old with pockets full of joy!
This is a terrific imaginative book about how different things can serve as pockets. Examples: a bed is a pocket for a rest; a bathtub is a pocket full of suds. The book has a rhythm to it when reading aloud--it is written in verses that each end with a strong statement. Kids enjoyed listening to this today. (10.10.22)
"A pocket for a whisper is an ear, a smile is a pocket of good cheer."
This darling book combines a delightful read aloud rhythm with the intriguing idea of noticing pockets throughout life. With warm, wholesome drawings, it's a treasure of a picture book that will have you and your kids knowingly sharing pockets everywhere!
Award winning author and personal favorite Elizabeth Garton Scanlon's first book is this delightful poetically written book which explores containers and all the things they contain them using pockets as metaphors. Starting with the title metaphor, Scanlon presents a number of examples with minimal text and repeated patterns that will make reading the book more accessible for young readers. Fancy Nancy illustrator Robin Priess Glasser provides the detail-rich joy filled illustrations. Great book to add to any classroom or home collection.
Great title & it's now a phrase I use often to explain a somewhat complicated & important dressing technique with people at the hospital I work at. I enjoy seeing their comprehension, & then their smiles at the phrase. Smiles get bigger when I tell them I'm borrowing it from a kids book. The content of the book is fun & original as well. Let your imagination take flight with a pocketful of giggles!
This book shares all the surprising pockets of life and what they hold. This book will leave children with pockets full of joy. From a sock being a pocket for your toes to a heart being a pocket full of love this book takes us on an adventure full of life's different pockets.
I would use this book for a read aloud because it flows very well. This book has characteristics that allow students to be engaged and want to interact with it.
Elizabeth’s a master wordsmith. Her, A SOCK IS A POCKET FOR YOUR TOES is, Soooooo much fun! And, Sooo sneakily educational. 😁 “A breath is a pocket full of air.” ‘A hat is a pocket for your hair.” 😁
Fabulously fun read. And Robin Preiss Glasser’s illustrations are joyous and colorful perfection.
Summary: It was a good book to read on how everyday life things act as a pocket such as your bed and socks. A book I would definitely have in my library and read as a nighttime story.
This is a sweet rhyming story of four different families who go through an entire day exploring the "world's pockets". This would be a cute bedtime story to share with a young one.
This poem book is about pockets. "A sock is a pocket for your toes" "A vase is a pocket for a rose". Every day things can be a pocket for other things around us. It talks about four different families traveling through their daily lives finding things that are pockets.
I think this book is an adorable book. It shows good and colorful illustrations. I like the way Scanlon starts with the poem being silly and giggling like "A pocket for chicken is a coop and a bowl is a pocket full of soup- uh-oh! A bowl is a pocket spilling soup. But at the end of the book, it shows love "Wide arms are pockets made for hugs, and your heart is a pocket full of love- sweet love. This would be a cute book to read for pre-schoolers and up!
This book explores the wonderful world of pockets. There are more pockets out there than you might think. A bowl is a pocket for soup, a breath is a pocket full of air and a nest is a pocket for a bird. Four families travel through their daily lives in this book, finding many things that are pockets. The artwork is full of action. Every picture has movement in it. On one page, a bowl of soup is spilling, causing everyone to be frantic. On another page, the children are running through the zoo and imitating a big white bear. Each person has different details, and even the animals all have distinct features. This book is best for reading to an individual child. Children will love the strange array of things that are a type of pocket. This book will be sure to delight young readers.
Ready for a laugh? A Sock is a Pocket for your Toes is sure to get you giggling! Great for preschoolers up to second graders. This wonderfully whimsical story is filled with rhyming words and exaggerated fun- like a huge stick of cotton candy and an overflowing bathtub filled with bubbles.
Something that I really liked in this story was that the illustrator included multicultural families throughout. Simple and enjoyably fun!
Speaking of pockets... I wonder how many kinds of pockets we can discover. Elizabeth Garton Scanlon and artist Robin Preiss Glasser have some ideas to share in this book. (I try to make it a habit to share the name of the author and illustrator before sharing a story to a group).
I "sang" this book to the tune "If You're Happy & You Know It". I had to improvise a little on each stanza (double-page spread), but I made it work.
This very cute and funny! I like how the author, Elizabeth Garton Scanlon use poetry to rhyme! This book is for ages 3 and up! It is a breath of fresh air. If my classroom seems to become very tense during the day I will pull out " A Sock is a pocket for your toes" , to loosen the atmosphere. I will also allow my students to think of other things that are used as pockets in their lives!
This book is about socks for your toes, for bears, for birds, for a duck and much more. This would be a great book for early readers because there are a lot of repeating words and the words are simpler words. The illustrations in this book are busy and will allow for the students to look at the pictures to assist in learning words.
This book goes through different items and how they relate as a "pocket" to other items.
I think this is such a cute book!
It would be awesome to use relationally, to show students how things are used and done. The younger age will relate to the idea of everything being a certain thing, because they think like this often.
Cute little book with adorable pictures. The concept was beyond my 3 year old "a vase is a pocket for a rose, a pocket for a chicken is a coop and a bowl is a pocket full of soup" but the pictures were fun for her to look at.
This is a sweet, silly, giggly book. It's fun to read and rhymes well. And the illustrations are the best part. Still I think a phone being a pocket full of talk is stretching it just a bit. Or a dell is a pocket for a farmer. (however it does rhyme with bell). Kids will love it.
This is a cute book about all the ways things can be used as pockets. Some of my favorites from the book were a bowl is a pocket full of soup, a bed is a pocket for a rest, and a pocket for a family is a home. Very sweet book!
I was not overwhelmed by this book. It is very sweet, and I like both the author and the illustrator a lot. But in fact it might have been too sweet for me, and the pocket theme started to feel pretty contrived after the very first stanza.
