80 wonderful recipes and gorgeous photography that express the flavors and atmosphere of the world-renowned Pike Place Market--for local and visiting home cooks alike.
The Pike Place Market sits in the center of downtown Seattle and at the center of the Seattle food scene. With its famous seafood and locally grown produce, it is seven acres of wonderful ingredients and inspiration for the home cook. Cookbook author Jess Thomson has prowled the Market's stalls, shops, restaurants, and purveyors to assemble a collection of recipes that celebrate the essence of Pike Place Market. Included here are Le Pichet's Salade Verte, Etta's Mini Dungeness Crab Cakes by Tom Douglas, and the Pink Door's Linguine alla Vongole. The author has also created recipes that are inspired by ingredients found at the market, such as Spanish Chickpea and Chorizo Stew (with Uli's Sausage) and a MarketSpice Tea Cake. The cookbook can also serve as a guide to the specialty shops and off-the-beaten path purveyors and cafes. With gorgeous images of prepared recipes, dazzling ingredients, and scenes of the Pike Place Market, this is the ultimate Seattle cookbook.
The author takes us on an interesting tour through shops in Pike Place (Seattle, WA) and features ingredients from these shops in her recipes. Among the many color photographs illustrating this book there are too many generic photos of ingredients, produce, etc. and not enough of the actual recipes. Also included are some photos of Seattle shops and people. Included in the book are recipes, menu suggestions, lists of resources and restaurants in the area. An index is also included.
This is a collection of recipes based on Seattle-based producers at the Pike Place Market.
I like the idea and the pictures are beautiful. But there could be pictures of each recipe. There is also an index and references to websites and recipes based on specific vendors which is great in practice, but I assume that vendors will change over time. It makes the book feel like it could be outdated pretty quickly.
Overall there are some nice recipes, but also generally require a lot of prep and work for a weekday meal.
As an expatriate Seattleite, I naturally gravitate to any book that can remind me of home. While I may be marooned far from the Emerald City, I still pine for the tastes and flavors of Seattle. This book delivers a splendid selection of recipes, all culled from Market ingredients, from eateries in and around the Market. The included photos document well the market and its denizens and offerings, however, only one in ten recipes has an accompanying photo to showcase the dish.
Loved this book. I have lived here for two years, but despite my best intentions, have not made the market part of my weekly routine. Just like three author, when we moved here I was so excited to make the market a party of my lifestyle. This book gave me some great anecdotes and history on the market as well as kitchen inspiration. Planning a trip down to the market tomorrow!
