Very interesting twist on how elves and humans exist. There are a few parts where it slows do the feel of the book. But after the introduction for the main characters, the book reads very well. Personally I liked Venda, with her youthful talking but mature personality. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This romantic series has been described as having "the passion of Twilight, the adventure of Lord of the Rings, and the magic of Harry Potter."

Ami Blackwelder is a prolific and award-winning writer having put her heart and soul into short stories, poetry, children's work and this amazing elfin series.

As one reviewer said: "She writes with tactile imagery and it's refreshing to experience this sort of romantic adventure from a male perspective."

These books are sure to capture both the fantasy and romance reader and are available in in these fine eBook sellers: OmniLit, Amazon, Books on Board, Smashwords and at the ireadiwrite Publishing online store.

More Reader Reviews:

"I really like how you capture Michael's trepidation about asking Evelyn out, the angst, the worry. He is an interesting character. Certainly something the YA's could sink their teeth into." –Diane

"I like the romance behind this. I am positive teenage girls will swoon.
That seems to be the way into their hearts and you seem to be on the right path with these novels.
I think it is neat to have this incorporated into high school and the drama that ensues is humorous and heart warming." -T.L Tyson

"I have to say that your writing is most impressive. Your characterization is superb, these are characters that all young adults will relate to. You have described the setting vividly." -Patrick Armstead

REVIEW FROM BOOKTASTE:
Romantic fantasy saves the elves

Cathy Macleod, 7 December 2009. Maybe not quite saved but they’re given some breathing space, because ahead are seven further books and more fearful threats in the Guardians of the Gate series by Ami Blackwelder.

“Enter a world of elfin romance,” she invites and takes us there via a normal high school. Not all the scholars are totally human, however, and a beautiful new girl displays mysterious qualities and a close link to a nearby forest. The lad who falls for her finds himself battling nasties on the other side of the Gate that separates our world from that of the wee folk.

Author Ami skillfully captures atmosphere and emotions and deftly includes some great poetry too. She is prolific and talented.
Check out some of her titles.

MY THOUGHTS
Two Forests, One in the land of elves, Emralusia and one in the human world. Two forests where elves, dark wolves and of course, humans. Wow! What a combination. I read the books The Mers, She Speaks to Angels and The Day the Flowers Died. Ms. Blackwelder writes in the fantasy world and sometimes we need to get away from the real world and enter the fantasy world. They are quick reads and if you like the supernatural and such, along with romance then you will like Ms. Blackwelder's books. She has a good way of writing. In this book, you get two different worlds with a world of Elfin Romance, a forbidden love. I liked the setting of the quietness of Colorado, deep in the forest. No one ever would have thought there would be a hidden world for over fifty thousand years. Michael Cole, who lives in Colorado has an attraction with Evelyn. This leads him on an adventure, even though this is a forbidden love, it will change their lives, perhaps forever more. They never knew they would have to fight for their lives and love through a strong dark, evil that surrounds them. Ms. Blackwelder puts a very intriguing story on how elves and humans join, fall in love and fights for what they want. The book was just a little slow at the beginning but after that the book speeds up and the interest starts. Ms. Blackwelder seems to put her all including her heart, soul and her imagination into her books.Enter the world of elves and humans, love and romance and let your imagination go. It will bring back those days of young love.

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.

Can you believe that a gate between worlds exists in the wilderness of Colorado? Well you can now. Ami Blackwelder gives young love a thriving environment in her novel, Guardians of the Gate. Aimed for young adult readers, Guardians of the Gate, shows the senior year of Michael, a star high school soccer player, as he falls madly in love with Evelyn, the school’s mysterious new arrival.
With precise detail Ami Blackwelder leads the reader through Michael’s eyes as he discovers that there is more to his mysterious dream girl than meets the eye – Danger. For thousands of years elves lived hidden in the forests of Colorado in peace and tranquility. But when Michael follows his new found love through the gate to her true homeland, he discovers that there is more to his world than he ever dreamed of. But once he leaves the world of the elves. Shadow Wolves, thriving on death and destruction, follow Michael’s scent back through the gate into his home of Lake Forest.
Can Evelyn protect Michael from the shadow wolves? Can Michael protect his friends, family, and the one he loves from the monsters in the night? Guardians of the Gate is a must read for anyone who loves a good story, and the idea that true love conquers all.

I found this a charming and engaging story for romance and young adult fans. The POV character, Michael brings a refreshing innocence and re-kindles those flushes of first love in the reader. I enjoyed the way fantasy blends with the "real" world. Evelyn is an appealing character and her conflict between the two worlds is well-drawn by the author.
