Describes Midwestern farm life from the 1920s to the present, and shares old-fashioned recipes for breads, soups, salads, meat, poultry, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts
I re-read this book from time to time. I just love it! I love the homey stories of the newlyweds back in the 1920's and seeing all the changes that a Midwestern kitchen has gone through in all these years. It reminds me of how good we have things today with all our modern amenities and appliances. I also like to see the evolution of the food over the years through the recipes. I've tried a few of the recipes and they're good.
I'm a sucker for cookbooks, the older the better. And if there is a good story woven throughout, then I'm in love! I thoroughly enjoyed reading about her early married years and her big cookstove, and I was happy to find the recipes were accessible for today's cook as well. A delightful read!
An interesting account of what life was like back in the homesteading era. Lots of good recipes. I enjoyed reading this story while learning about the trials and joys of the time.
Interesting, detailed memoir of decades of farm life told by an engaging woman. Generous amount of recipes provided with tips and affectionate memories.
I am always drawn in by a historical memoir told by an author with a simple life. This delivers in spades. A straightforward, oddly charming account of 20th century rural home life with recipes.
