Premonitions #1-2

The Sight by Judy Blundell

Rate this book
A pair of supernatural mysteries from National Book Award winner Judy Blundell.

Gracie has premonitions.

They've haunted her since before her mother's death, and she can't get rid of them. She doesn't know how to deal with them and she doesn't want to--they've never led to anything good. She never knows whether she's seeing the past, the present, or the future--it just comes to her.

But Gracie is forced to try to use her premonitions. Her best friend, Emily, disappears, and the premonitions lead to the only clues to where she might be--and how she might be saved. Gracie's long-absent father returns, and his history seems mysteriously linked to the disappearance of a student many years ago--and the recent appearance of a body. Gracie's premonitions can lead to answers...but they can also unearth some dark secrets better left unknown.

In these two novels, now in one volume, National Book award winner Judy Blundell takes readers on a suspenseful journey where premonitions become a matter of life and death.

A pseudonym used by Jude Watson.

Judy Blundell has written books for middle grade, young adult, and adult readers under several pseudonyms. Her novel, Premonitions, was an ALA Reluctant Readers Best Picks and was chosen by the New York Public Library as a 2004 Best Books for the Teen Age. Among her forthcoming projects is Book #4 in the New York Times bestselling series, The 39 Clues. Judy Blundell lives in Katonah, New York, with her husband and daughter.
2008 National Book Award winner for her YA novel What I Saw and How I Lied, Judy Blundell is well known to Star Wars fans by her pseudonym, Jude Watson.
What could be more fun than writing in your journal? Well, how about writing Queen Amidala's journal for her? Jude Watson is currently the most celebrated author in the prequel-era of the Star Wars phenomenon. She's no stranger to science fiction — her own series, entitled Danger.com, is a mystery series based on the Internet. Watson became involved with LucasBooks when an editor she had worked with in the past selected her to write Captive to Evil by Princess Leia Organa (Star Wars Journal). Since then Watson has penned the Star Wars Jedi Apprentice series as well as journals for Queen Amidala and Darth Maul.
Readers of the Queen Amidala journal become privy to all her top secrets such as why she applies her lipstick in such an odd manner and how she manages her two identities as Queen Amidala and as Padme. The book is a doorway to all her thoughts, fears and strategies for everything from dealing with droid blasts to negotiating with the less-than-trustworthy Neimoidians!
In Jude's series, Jedi Quest, she explores the world of the Jedi through Jedi Master Obiwan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker.
So how does Jude keep all the characters and events in order? Jude definitely relies on the movies and the folks at LucasBooks, and she has even used A Guide to the Star Wars Universe by Bill Slavicsek as a handy reference. Jude also credits the creative collaboration with Scholastic editor David Levithan and Lucas editors Jane Mason and Sarah Hines Stephens as being extremely helpful. On the Lucas editors, she comments, "They are also incredibly cool — not only do they know the Star Wars universe inside and out, they really urge writers to bring their own ideas to the table."
Although the books are written for children ranging from 9 to 13 years of age, Watson has found a large fan base with adults! That's not a surprise since the stories are not only timeless, but also universal.

THE SIGHT is actually the compilation of two previously released novels, PREMONITIONS and DISAPPEARANCE. Originally published in 2004 and 2005, the two stories are now combined into one work.

The two books revolve around Gracie. She is uprooted from her home in Maryland after her mother is killed in a car accident. Gracie has always had feelings about things. And the day her mother dies, she begs her mother not to leave the house. She has a bad feeling something will happen, and the smell of oranges keeps invading her thoughts. In the end, her mother is killed by a truck hauling oranges. Her maternal grandparents move into her house in the hopes that less disruption in her routine will help Gracie heal. But she withdraws into herself and becomes worse rather than better. In a last ditch effort, her grandparents send her off to her Aunt Shay, all the way across the country to a small island off the coast of Washington state.

Gracie still doesn't quite fit in, but her aunt and her cousin, Diego, do try to make her welcome. It's not until her lone friend, Emily, walks away from Gracie's yard and disappears that Gracie starts to accept her aunt and cousin in her life. Determined to figure out what happened to Emily, Gracie, with the help of Diego, attempts to find her. This is the basis of the first part of THE SIGHT.

The second part of the book begins when Gracie and a group of teenagers discover a dead body under the docks. The discovery of the body begins a cascade of events that once again put Gracie in harm's path. Along with the dead body mystery, her long-lost father appears out of nowhere and wants to form a relationship with her. Her father left when she was a small child, and has had no contact with her until now. Gracie wants to have her father in her life again, but as she gets to know him, secrets and lies come to the surface.

I was caught up in the whirlwind that has become Gracie's life on Beewick Island. Gracie tries to use her gift of seeing to help, first to find Emily, and secondly, to discover who is behind the dead body under the pier. Each vision causes a new blip in her detecting, and puts her in harms' way more than once.

The stories go quickly and blend easily from one to the next. Gracie was a believable character and trying to do the best in the situation she's thrust into. As the story unfolds, she learns more about her history and tries to adjust and accept her new life. I'd love to see another story with Gracie and her eventual maturity and development of her gifts.

The premonitions started after Gracie almost drowned, and no matter how much she wishes it, they won’t stop. They sneak up on her unawares, giving her flashes of insight into the past or the future. They’ve only ever caused trouble for Gracie until tragedy strikes close and the premonitions become the keys to solving the mystery. Gracie realizes that she can no longer cruise along in the backseat of her life—she has to take action. With the disappearance of her friend Emily, the reappearance of her estranged father, connections between past and present abductions and murders, and unknown threats, Gracie’s premonitions will become the only means to her survival.

The Sight contains two of Blundell’s earlier novels, Premonitions and Disappearance, published under the pseudonym Jude Watson. I really liked Blundell’s writing in What I Saw and How I Lied, but despite the commonality of a central mystery to both books, Blundell’s earlier writing wasn’t quite as good. Don’t get me wrong; Blundell is undoubtedly skilled at manipulating plot and making it suspenseful and exciting. However, she fell a little short with characterization and originality. Protagonist Gracie wasn’t always easy to connect with or understand and certainly was not what defined the story. In addition, I’ve read many novels with variations of this storyline of an unwilling psychic saving the day by solving the mystery. The Sight didn’t really stand out from among this group, and in fact, its tendency to sound like a soap opera made it a bit unrealistic.

The Sight will be enjoyed by fans of Sight by Adrienne Maria Vrettos, Death at Deacon Pond by E.M. Alexander, Dark Visions by L.J. Smith, and Numbers by Rachel Ward.

Truly remarkable.
Though, it has been a while since I read it during my 9th grade but it still stands out whenever I reminisce about the time when there was freedom to read as long as you could without restrictions and obligations.
Some days.
Anyway, this book was one of its kind, not entirely teensy. Though, I admit the protagonist had a good reason to be a little crybabyish. Who would've thought premonitions could be this inconvenient, huh? When all I could wish for was a little glimpse into the future to check if some unwanted questions landed on my test paper. Hm.
I loved this book, the writing, the plot, the twists, all being nerve wracking and I would definitely recommend it.

I remember reading this on a cold evening one winter after school, and it couldn't have been a more perfect setting. Interesting themes were explored, and good writing as well.

When I requested this novel from goodsreads bookwasp, I actually did not have high hopes for it. After reading the first page, I cringed at having picked up another angst filled young adult novel where the lead is so antisocial and broken that all they have is contempt for the world around them. That lasted about three pages before the writing was dominate by plot and character development. I was so surprised by the change, I almost had whiplash.

If I ever rate a young adult novel more than three stars, you know it is worth a look. I was so pleasantly surprised at the interesting plot, realistic characters, and intriguing writing that I could not put the book down. Instead of being confronted by an young teen bitter from not having a father and recently losing her mother in a car accident on top of having interrupting visions, I was dealt Gracie, a sixteen year old struggling with the changes in her life and confusing emotions. She is jealous of her aunt and cousin who have a close relationship she can longer have with her mother. She is constantly annoyed by Emily, a classmate who Gracie never wanted to be friends with but ends up risking her life to save. She is attracted to the aloof and old Zed who she cannot seem to act normal around.

Of course there were bitter and jaded comments about the world around her, but, more than anything, Gracie is determined to find a place she belongs, a home. Not surprising since Gracie was uprooted from the only home and family she has ever known and dropped onto an island with relatives she cannot seem to find common ground with a town that does not seem to accept her. That is the least of her worries because her ability to pick up visions is forcing her into action.

Two stories in one, both deal with Gracie trying to use her ability the best she can to save those around her. The only things I did not like about this book is that Blundell seemed to leave some loose ends such as the road Gracie’s father decides to take, which the reader can guess, and Gracie and Zed’s relationship . I would have liked some closure on those subjects.

Its been a while that I've read the second part since that's what I'd read first unaware that Premonitions is the second book but I've been fortunate enough to get my hands on this sequel combo which by the way is brain storming. I've never been on the edge of my couch the way I was while reading this book. The plot has the most unpredictable yet completely believable twists. The story line of a girl seeing future isn't really new on the shelves but the sheer edginess and grip of the plot is. I've always admire how the writer manages to maintain the heart throbbing suspense till the last page which obviously doesn't help one's already reeling mind from the roller coaster emotions and the everlasting mystery. I'd go ahead and say that this series is as good as Sherlock Holmes mysteries, or well a little better since it's more teen friendly.
Being not much of a thriller fan, I'd say this book has a great deal in opening expanding genres for me. I'm looking forward to read some more books of Jude Watson because I feel addicted to the adrenaline rush that her writing style induces in people.
I don't want to go ahead and give synopses of the books since it might act as spoilers but I'd like to make sure that one thing is clear- Expect the Unexpected.
A must read for all teenagers.

Finally! I have searched the whole internet for the name of this book.

This was one of the few books that really left a mark on me. I feel that the beginning was quite slow, and although exciting, it was slightly difficult for me to comprehend at the time. But, If you are thinking about reading this book or struggling to finish this book, I urge you took keep on going.

There is a major plot twist that I can still remember 10 years on. I could not put the book down in this period and keep re-reading that particular section (which involves where the children were taken). I cannot put into words how exciting this was for me, and am yet to find a book that will have the same effect on me.

I greatly encourage you to read this book, and keep going with it until the end. If anyone has any books that will live up to this one, please recommend them to me!

Finally, done reading it. It just can't stop making me wondering and wondering. I'm just getting more curious and more curious every time I turned from pages to pages. I'm just so thrilled!!! Truly, I'm not regretting for buying this book and I'm glad of it! Basically, this book keeps making me asking "why" and "why" and "why" and guess what? I'm still asking why even though I'm done reading it. Oh, oh, I also wish I got the psychic abilities like Gracie did. Hoho

A fairly good book for someone into mystery novels. But the thing is, it was not as mysterious as I wanted it to be. I read it a long time ago and I wanted to just write a review and I remember all the incidents that happened.

I think mostly because she's a kid who has super natural powers, she has a disadvantage. In #2 she isn't allowed to go to the murder scene because she's a kid. And you expect her to unravel every mystery there is. Ummm..not gonna happen.

Also I thought the plot twists were kinda for young adult reading it. No offense to the ones who couldn't guess it, but I pretty much guessed the twists. It could be read by people who love Famous Five (my 13-year old self did. I still do but my IQ increased since then. Now that reading it would be different. Get my point?)

But it surely deserves 4 stars.

This book is a collection of two novels: Premonitions + Disappearance
The first novel is great, it explores the character of Grace, a girl who has unsolicited premonitions which helps her solve a mystery from her lost friend. It's rather intriguing and the twist that comes in the book is pretty unexpected.
The second novel also has a mystery aspect, however, it doesn't dive that much into Grace's psychic abilities, and I don't consider it gives much of a conclusion to her arch.

It's pretty entertaining and a very fast read, but I just wish it digged deeper into the characters into the second half of the book.

I enjoyed this, but I do think that the main character was pretty thick headed. The way she treated people was pretty frustrating.

I took a long time to get into this little series. It is good, but not the best thing I have ever read.

I know I'm not done yet with this book, but it's originally two books; Premonitions and Disappearance.

I read Premonitions 5 years ago, and I still remember how it made me feel. It was the first book I read other than Harry Potter series or Goosebumps series. So reading a stand-alone book was new experience for me.
Re-reading was thrilling, I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was 16.
So I recommend this book to thriller, Sci-Fi and mystery lovers to read it.

if you are considering reading it STOP RIGHT HERE. the next part is gonna be full of spoiler SO STOP RIGHT HERE

---------------

so, where should I start with this ?
Basically the story is about Gracie, a 15-years old teenager. who has a special 'Gift'. Her gift is knowing things. she could sense people's emotions, she knows about their pasts, their presents and sometimes their future. seems typical, ha ?
The weird thing is, most of the time she can't tell if what she's seeing is from the past, the present, or the future !

and that's where the story begins. Gracie's mother is dead. She died in a car accident, and since her father left her when she was three, she was tossed around her relatives, until she moves in with her Aunt.

I really liked Gracie, in the beginning she was so scared, so angry and so pissed off of everything and anything. I mean, it's normal for a teenager who lot her only family and has random visions about strangers to have this IDGAF-about-anyone-or-anything attitude.

but to be honest it got on my nerves sometimes.
People are trying to help you, maybe they don't know what you've been through but they are trying!

anyway, there is a lot of things I liked about this story, the essence of the book; it's all about Family.
Family bonds are the most important thing in this world. Society is formed of building blocks which are families. we can't have a decent society if the families are disturbed.

and, call me what you want, but I love Jonah.
there is something about villains that attracts me.
and Jonah himself is a victim-as it turns out- to his abusive father.
so I don't really blame him.
abusive kids are usually neglected, their voices are muffled and no one hears them, and most of the time to turn out disturbed and psychotic.
I really feel sorry for those kids.

Overall, I enjoyed it. It's not the most great-life-changing book, so I'm giving it 4.5 stars.

Now time to talk about the second book; Disappearence.

I really liked it, the mystery of the case and the way it all flowed together.
But I wanted MORE !

We didn't get to see a lot of details, but I guess it's okay. There ware too many good quotes I can't recall any right now.
I just love the writing.

Overall, this series is a 4 stars, although I wish if there was a third book.

I recieved The Sight by Jude Watson as a review book from Scholastic Books. I was estatic to find that this is actually two novels in one. The first book being Premonitions and the second is Disappearance. These are the first two books in the a series; about a young girl by the name of Gracie. Gracie is not your typical girl after having been seeing visions since she was 10 years old. Although, Gracie finds herself fighting this fight alone after having lost her mother in a fatal car accident.[return][return][return][return][return]Premonitions follows a unqiue storyline. Watson uses Gracie's gift to work this story in reverse. She starts the story at the end, and works through the progression to fill you in on the remainder of the story. In this first story Gracie is a bit of a brat, but throughout the story you find many details explaining her past and reason for her hurtful attitude. I am exciting in completion to find that this character turns around, and that she begins to embrace her new home and life. It was intrigueing to also read a story where a victim can understand and sympathcize with the villian. Gracie uses her experience with Jonah to grasp the changes and struggles that she is experiencing her own life. This is a very twisted story, and extremely suspenseful. You will find yourself buzzing right through the story. I was anxious to jump right into the next story.[return][return][return][return][return]Disappearance is set a little bit after Premonitions. You find yourself delved deep into this story where Gracie has made a home with Diego and Shay. At first, it appears that there is no longer a struggle to belong and that Gracie has finally found a home. Though, you soon find Watson carries another bullet when a murder and secret past cause Gracie to have to question her new life all over again. In this second novel, Gracie is beginning to really work with her visions. Breaking them down and discovering what they really mean. This is author is a very suspenseful writer; and she is constantly putting Gracie in situations that make the reader cringe knowing that catastrophe is just around the corner. I would love to read more of this series, but it appears that there were no more books. [return][return][return][return]The review copy that I recieved of this book is The Sight; which is actually a new book that they have combined Premonitions and Disappearance that were originally released 2005. On to my favorite part of the review COVERS! This is a very attractive cover; the black and white image but the eyes appear to be glowing a purple. That is fantastic, it is very professional and eye catching. I believe that the image is very fitting for being novels about a young girl that has visions. Great cover for a great story.....[return]

The Sight
By Judy Blundell

This book, The Sight by Judy Blundell, is about a girl named Gracie. Gracie has a gift. She has a gift that she isn’t really sure if she wants it. When her best friend Emily disappears and she can’t be found Gracie is forced to use her gift or premonitions to find her. The premonitions that she has will help her and will not. She has different premonitions at different times of the day. As Gracie's premonitions go on she finds some information that she might not want to hear. Her father left and came back into her life and his secrets might be to much for anyone to handle. His past is a mysterious link to her premonitions. Gracie keeps getting premonitions and she needs every one's help to help her find what they mean. Does she find her best friend in time?

I loved this book. Even though it was hard to keep up with the premonitions and real life it was still good. The premonitions were hard to tell apart because it doesn’t just come out and say “the next premonition she has is,” I’m glad it didn’t either because it gave a suspense side of the story. I didn’t like how some of her premonitions didn’t relate to the subject. They were just thrown into it to make the story better, but when in reality it didn’t. I give this book a 8.5 out of 10 because of this. Overall I enjoyed it. I was also surprised how the story ended.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense and mystery. I bet that once you start reading this book you will fall in love with the characters and the idea of the story. This book is not like the usual books that I read. It had the suspense but I wish it had a little more to the plot. Read this book to find out what happens to Gracie and her best friend Emily.

Judy Blundell takes readers into the labyrinth of questions through flickers of psychic flashes, revealing bit by bit of clues and information. Past, present and future collides in a chaotic and suspenseful experience that will leave readers thrilled and curious. Blundell explores the depth of pain and grief in this dark novel.

There are times that I was frustrated and slightly annoyed with Gracie. Let’s face it, she isn’t a likable character. She pushes away the people who want to help her, who want to reach out to her. I know that she wasn’t in the state of accepting outside help at that point. But a part of me was asking: What is she doing?! I mean, sure, you can turn down people’s efforts. But do it in a nice way. Another thing is her recklessness. When she assumes that she knows something because of her flashes, she just goes with it and oftentimes gets in trouble. Although, this could also be a factor of her being a teenager. She’s young. She doesn’t think as rationally as mature people.

On the brighter side of things, I really liked the flow of the novel. The tension built up with every flash. And I wasn’t able to guess who the bad guys were. I got to peek in the heads of most of the characters via Gracie. It was great to be able to see the struggles of these characters in their lives, as well as their vulnerability.

Premonition - 4 stars

I really liked this novel. It started off a little slow, but I really liked how Watson tied it all up in the end.

I really don't have much to say about this book, as you can see, but it was pretty good. I definitely recommend it.

Disappearance - 5 stars

I loved this part of the novel! It was truly amazing. I really had no idea how this one was going to end up. I felt this sort of connection with this novel. It was a pretty fast read, to be honest. I really liked Gracie. Very good book, I most definitely suggest you read this book if you're given the opportunity!

Honestly, when I first saw this book, I was like, OMG I so wanna read this. The cover is great, the title is great, the summary is great. But then, I opened the book and. BAM! What a disappointment. I read the first 50pages and it was dead boring. Every time I tried reading it some more, I fell asleep. Honest. I was so excited to read the book because it looked so amazing and it let me down. I was not captivated enough to read the rest of the book. Even though it might have gotten better, I decided not to take the chance. The book was just so awfully boring. As for anyone who liked it, I'm sorry but maybe the book just wasn't for me.

The book is a piece of evidence that Judy still knows what the readers expect when they buy the book. The cover of the book is exactly what the book is about "A disturbed mind beyond a beautiful face". The entire story revolves around the key character Gracie. Throughout the book Gracie has abilities to empathize what a few fellow subjects in the book think and can also pick up flash of the past, present and future of a disturbed mind. Rather than involving another person into Gracie's premonitions she tries to decrypt the flashes herself. The author has done an excellent work in mirroring Gracie's past with the character. This book is worth reading on a lazy summer afternoon.

This was a fun, fast read, and another that I'll be suggesting to reluctant readers. My only complaint is that while Judy/ Jude does a FANTASTIC job of building tension, the climaxes to the stories themselves fall a little short of the rest of the book. However, I don't think that's a fault that a student would catch, and if more books were to be published in this mini-series I'd recommend them without hesitation to just about any middle school student and a whole lot of high schoolers, too.
