My name's Heidi Rice, I'm a USA Today Bestselling author. I'm married with two sons (which gives me rather too much of an insight into the male psyche!).
I love my job because it involves sitting down at my computer and getting swept up in a world of high emotions, sensual excitement, funny feisty women, sexy tortured men and glamourous locations where laundry doesn't exist ...
I also tutor a 14-week in-depth online Write a Romance Novel course. So, if you have ever wanted to learn how to write romance from a bestselling author, check it out here: www.profwritingacademy.com/course/wri...
Now I believe wholeheartedly that readers should give honest and open reviews on Goodreads and Amazon and elsewhere. If you didn't like a book you are entitled to say so (even if it's mine! ouch). But you may notice that none of my book reviews are less than four-stars. That's simply because as an author myself I know how pathetically sensitive I am about bad reviews and with that in mind I prefer to spread the love among other authors — and don't do public reviews of books I didn't like. Just thought I'd clarify that!

The heroine Cassie has had a rough year, so when she gets splashed by some idiot in a Mercedes she decides enough is enough and gets in the car to give the driver a piece of her mind. However the driver turns out to be her one-time teenage crush and the resident bad boy of her high school 'Jace the Ace'! Jace is intrigued by Cassie and takes her back to his hotel to help her get cleaned up, as well as the chance to get a little closer to her. Jace is in London to sort out some business and personal problems, but being back reminds him too much of his traumatic childhood. He hopes to convince Cassie to have some fun with him, something he desperately needs, until he leaves. Cassie agrees to a fling as she too needs to bring a little fun back into her life. The passion that erupts between them over the Christmas period surprises them both with it's intensity, and Jace and Cassie soon find themselves getting closer and closer.
What a scorcher of a book, seriously! But it is also very deep and emotional, at times I was actually holding my breath to find out the character's reactions. Jace is such a great hero; a true bad boy, which I love, but also with a hint of vulnerability and pain. Cassie is literally THE PERFECT HEROINE! She's so feisty and fun, yet also very sweet. As usual Heidi Rice's characters sparkle, and the glittering dialogue between them is fantastic and helps the story flow beautifully. I really like the simplicity of the romance, there's no clichés or well used tropes here, and it is made that extra bit special by Heidi's brilliantly sassy writing, and a few Christmas metaphors thrown in to really make it dazzle!
I adored this book. It had me close to tears one moment, laughing out loud another moment, and fanning myself at a few other moments!
Heidi Rice is an automatic buy for me and when this popped up on my Kindle on November 1st it took considerable will power for me not to dive right into reading it.
However, I couldn't resist for long. I read this over three days, just because I really had no time to read, and I had to drag myself away from it every time.
Jace is a wonderfully tortured hero and you can immediately relate to Cassidy. How many times have you got splashed by some inconsiderate car driver going straight through a puddle and wished you could tell them exactly what you thought of them?
Well that is exactly what happened to Cassidy, and being the feisty lady she is, she jumps into Jace's car to confront him. She didn't count on Jace being Jace the Ace, she had a huge crush on during her school years.
When he invites her back to his hotel suite to have her coat dry cleaned, Cassidy gets more than she bargained for. She gets her very own candy man and they embark on a sizzling Christmas fling. Falling in love was not part of the bargain, but of course that is exactly what happens.
As is expected of Heidi, the sex scenes sizzle and the dialogue sparkles and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of reading it. Jace is a hero to die for and I fell in love with him a little, I have to say :-)
I'm not ashamed to say that the ending brought happy tears to my eyes.
Sometimes, Christmas wishes can come true, in the most unusual way.
Cassidy Fitzgerald makes her yearly visit to gaze at the Christmas window at Selfridges, wishing her love life could be as perfect as the display. Nine months before, she broke off her engagement when she arrived home to find her fiancée on the couch with another woman, in a very intimate position.
Cassie is not looking forward to spending the holiday alone, for the first time in a long time. Just as she turns to head home, an inconsiderate driver splashes her and she has had enough. No more taking what life dishes out, she jumps into the stranger’s car and gives him a piece of her mind for his actions. But she is stunned to see that the man driving is her grade school crush Jason Ryan-Jace the Ace! He offers to get her coat cleaned, and the new Cassie decides to take a walk on the wild side for a holiday fling with Jace. She’ll be fine, as long as she can keep her heart out of the equation, right? Can Cassie stay detached and just have ten days with Jace, knowing there’s no future? Or can she show Jace love doesn’t have to be painful?
Heidi Rice has written a sweetly sexy romance, with broken dreams and new love, all wrapped in a big holiday package. The characters here are well defined, people you feel like you already know. The idealistic romantic and the successful but bitter former bad boy, meeting again after fourteen years. This is the real world of holiday London, and it is clear Ms. Rice knows her location very well, and has included the reader in the unfolding events.
Cassidy ‘Cassie’ Fitzgerald is determined to change. She is tired of being treated like a doormat by the men she chooses, and decides to have a holiday fling. With the encouragement of her friend Nessa, she embarks on her search for a ‘candy man’ but never expected to run into her old teenage crush. Jace still sends tingle to all the right places, and she decides to explore this new side of herself, aiming for a no strings attached one-night stand. She didn’t expect her heart to become involved.
Jason ‘Jace the Ace’ Ryan is in town for one reason: to sell the online business he owns with his ex-wife, so he can finally get her out of his life. The last thing on his mind is a hook up with any woman, until Cassie literally jumps into his rented car to yell at him for his thoughtlessness. Jace was the sexy bad boy back in school, and he is still handsome, sexy and reckless, but even better equipped to handle life. He is attracted to Cassie, and convinced he can have a holiday fling without either of them ending up hurt.
This is a fast paced romance, and things heat up quickly between Cassie and Jace. When Cassie disappears after their night together, Jace tracks her down to convince her to spend the holiday with him. The story heats up here, and there are some wonderfully sensuous scenes between them. I loved watching the progress of the relationship, as Cassie keeps trying not to fall, and Jace convinces himself he isn’t falling either. The typical holiday activities take on a delightful turn, as Cassie takes Jace shopping, and to a get-together of friends for Christmas. There were some very tearful moments, as well, where I worried for the happy ever after of these two, but I was delighted to see finally happened between them. I recommend this one to be read with a box of tissues at hand.
ON THE FIRST NIGHT OF CHRISTMAS by author Heidi Rice, is a November 2011 release by Mills & Boon UK for it’s Modern series.
Jace Ryan was Cassidy Fitzgerald’s first teenage crush back in high school. Has she really grown over him? She is wishing for a candy-man for a sweet fling during Christmas. And she meets him, the bad boy from high school!
It was hilarious the way Cassie jumps into a stranger’s car, eyes flashing, wanting to give him a piece of her mind. And then she realizes it’s Jace. He takes her back to his hotel to clean up the mud he splashed over her clothes and they end up having a passionate fling! But it’s for a week only.
What will happen after the week is over? Will Jace still want to see Cassie?
Jace doesn’t believe in Christmas. When Cassie brings him a Christmas gift, he is stunned at receiving a gift for the first time in his life. Will Cassie be able to hide her love from Jace?
In Jace’s experience love hurt. It hurt the person loving as his mother was being hurt. It was messy, disappointing, complicated and unnecessary. He never planned to feel it. And he certainly doesn’t know how to express it. He isn’t able to articulate his feelings because of a childhood marred by violence.
I had grave doubts how the author would manage to get this two characters together for their happily ever after, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The growth and progression of the love between Cassie and Jace, though they, themselves are not aware at the time, is depicted in a natural flow which is emotionally satisfying. We know Jace loves Cassie, yet he doesn’t realize it because he feels himself incapable of experiencing love.
The author has delivered a tortured hero, who doesn’t believe in love, a strong feisty heroine, who ends up wanting the fairy tale love with all its frills and rolled them in a story that is filled with emotion and sizzle. Cassie and Jace’s story is hugely enjoyable and highly romantic tale readers will find absolutely impossible to resist.
Redolent with breathtaking romance, spectacular emotional punch, a believable conflict and vivid atmospheric details, ON THE FIRST NIGHT OF CHRISTMAS is the latest high standard offering by author Heidi Rice.

Review: This may have been my first Heidi Rice book but it won't be the last by this relatively new author - 7 books for Harlequin/Mills&Boon since 201, but there's a reason she's a USA Today Bestselling Author! :D
Cassie and Jace (Jacob) are so real, the scenes with them alone, with her friends (cause he didn't have any real ones then), out shopping together for Christmas gifts, were so well written that I felt as if I was standing right there.
We've all experienced heart break or known someone who felt stupid for having been in a bad relationship and Cassie is no stranger to that.
Her wish for Christmas love is one many of us have at some point in time wished would become a reality. Well, for her it does, in the form of physically fantastic, wealthy but emotionally flawed Jacob 'Jace' Ryan.
The chemistry between these two in On The First Night Of Christmas is amazing and it translates into 'hawt' sex. ;)
That's not all though. The each have emotional issues to overcome and how they brave those to experience what starts as a hot fling but which quickly progresses to something more, is the other half of what makes this book so engaging.
No wonder this book was published under Harlequin Presents Extra.
A must-read for sure. Add this one to your shopping list.
Cassie Fitzgerald and Jace Ryan knew each other in high school. In fact, Cassie has had a secret crush on him but he never noticed her. Years later, the two meet when Jace is speeding through the streets and splashes mud all over an angry Cassie. Impulsive, Cassie jumps into Jace’s car to give him a piece of her mind.
Jace can’t believe that this crazy woman would jump in his car but he is mildly attracted to her and takes her back to his hotel to clean her off. The incident turns into a fling and Jace proposes to have a little holiday fun while he is in town for the week. Cassie quickly agrees but it is hard for her to keep her emotions out of the way.
The emotional chemistry between Cassie and Jace is not strong enough. Cassie is far more emotional attached to Jace throughout the whole story. I didn’t buy that he realized he loved her at the very last second in the book. It seemed force and unbelievable due to the fact that each time she expressed her emotions, he basically said, “I’m flattered”. I wanted some reciprocation on some level. Jace does have some issues that he causes his to clam up emotionally but the author fails to show progression with his character emotionally.
The sex scenes are hot and entertaining. The dialogue is quick and funny. I love the banter between Cassie and her best friend as she encourages Cassie to have fun with her man candy for the time being. The story is cute and entertaining.
A fun holiday read with LOTS of down and dirty. The H meets the h when she splashed her with water while driving by and she jumps into his car to tell him off. Brave of her.
They soon realized that they knew each other from school and the H offers to take her back to his hotel to get her clean. *nudge nudge wink wink*
One thing led to another and there was soon a whole lot of down and dirty and very little talking. What was supposed to be a one night stand turned into a week and into ....
You'll have to read the book. LoL
I enjoyed it. Hot sex during the Christmas season is a win for me!
This book is quite funny knowing that the story’s plot is about a girl looking for a candy-man, someone who’ll made her feel like a queen, grants her wishes, and just pure sexual affair, no strings attached, no pain, just for the Christmas holiday…
“On the first night of Christmas”is a sweet, sexy, funny romance book, with a package of hope, dreams, love.
The characters are well-defined and developed, I find myself easily falling for both of them, I especially love Jace, with his bad-boy, reckless, billionaire-attitude, he is still a sweet gentleman--- any girl would surely fall for..:).
I love the entire plot, when Cassie keeps trying not to fall for Jace and Jace trying to convince he’s not falling for Cassie either.
Ms. Rice wrote a vivid description of Christmas in London, and reading this book feels like I’m there too..:) I also salute her for the wonderful and witty dialogues, and as expected hot romance scenes.
There are times, that I cried my heart out along with the characters, especially with the ending….:0
On the first night of Christmas is not just a seasonal fast-paced book, it’s perfect for anytime of the year…Highly recommended to those who enjoyed a little bit of love, romance, humor, and everything in between…:D
I struggled with this one quite a bit. On the one hand, I really liked the idea behind the story, but on the other, I never thought you got to see the characters do anything exciting or different. Cassie was the type of character who had been let down by men before, and yet when faced with a man that she knows doesn't do commitment, she once again falls in love with him, despite repeated mentions of how badly that type of man has hurt her before. And Jace goes from just wanting sex with Cassie, to just wanting sex with her but more often. I never really got the sense of them falling in love. I will say though that Heidi Rice does write good sex scenes, but the sex in this story did not equal love for me. A good plot, but I didn't believe the 'love' in the love story. 2.5 stars.
AMAZING! Can Heidi do no wrong writing wise? Well not in my opinion. Another fab read and the cover alone will get you in the mood. Cassie meets up with Jace Ryan again after several years (they were in school together but years apart) after he splashes her with his car and she takes matters into her own hands. There begins a fling so passionate and steamy with the background of Xmas all around. But Jace lives in New York and Cassie in London so will their affair endure once he has to return. I won't give away anymore suffice to say you will love every page of it and make sure you have the Kleenex out - you will need them. Terrific stuff.
Cassie Fitzgerald is hoping Christmas gets more cheerful for her. After being humiliated by her jerk of a fiance, she's a little low on self esteem and joy. She, however, gets more than she bargained for after spontaneously jumping into a "stranger's" car. 'Tis a Season she won't soon forget!
I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed Ms. Rice's portrayal of Cassie, and Jace just makes you want to love him! Though the plot is a bit predictable, I was never bored. The sex scenes were hot and the dialogue between characters was great. I teared up a little bit near the end, but was all smiles at the end.
I finally read all of Heidi Rice's published works ( I think). I loved this story and the fact that I read the book on the first day of Christmas just makes it better. I loved Cassie and Jace's story because there was something there that just drew the characters together. I love the fact that the first memory of Cassie that Jace has is of seeing her watching him snoging with another girl whom he can't remember. The story flowed so well I so want them included in another story maybe a follow-up to 'Tis the Season to Love Shopping because they both have settings in New York (hint hint).
Okay, so I want my very own Candy-Man if Jace is anything to go by. I loved the premise, loved the style of writing, and loved the little twist. This was very cleverly written, with a beautiful writing style. From the word go, I was cheering for both Cassie and Jace to find their way. A perfect romance.
This book was not so bad. I fell for Jace Ryan. My first love was a bad boy. It's like I'm wired to have a soft spot for them. Jace is, in my book, an example of a bad boy. His and Cassie's story spoke to me in a good way. In the long run it was a little to mellow for me. For a Bouquet story it was almost perfect.
I was really disappointed with this read. I had high hopes going into it, but they quickly diminished.
My main issue with this story was, how it felt like there were two Cassie's. One Cassie from Cassie's perspective, then a different Cassie from Jace's perspective. I know it was probably me, but I just could not picture them being the same Cassie.
I thought this novel had a cute story line, but personally, it was portrayed poorly. I asked zero questions while reading it, which means it never left a trail of intrigue for me to follow. 1.5 Stars.
It was your typical Harlequin romance. The book received a slightly higher rating because it takes place over Christmas and I love just about everything Christmas.
