Yada,yada,yada,porno,porno,porno,yada,yada,yada,yada,yada,yada.

This about sums up Lindira, and yes: the yada outnumbers the porno by a ratio of approximately 3 to 1. I counted pages.

The story is mostly about Lindira, some sort of shape-shifting human/dolphin type of creature, and Jese (pronounced, I presume, "Jesse" and not "Jeez") who seems to be some sort of very insecure sasquatch who is always apologizing for no reason. Given the nature of the two protagonists, the book's preface-

This book is a work of fiction. The names, characters, places, and incidents are products of the writer’s imagination or have been used fictitiously and are not to be construed as real. Any resemblance to persons, living or dead, actual events, locale or organizations is entirely coincidental-

seems a bit unnecessary.

But that is a minor quibble.

Lindira is rescued by Jese after evil humans kill her lover and maim her. Jese is himself suffering under the curse of an evil wizard who has turned him into an apologetic sasquatch and also cursed his lover, Von, who is a god and away hunting when Lindira washes up on his and Jese's island of the damned. The only way the curse can be lifted is if Lindira willingly has sex with both of them at the same time. Since Von is,um, huge, this will probably be impossible and the curse will never be lifted.

And there you have the setup.

The book is then fleshed out by plenty of yada yada, mostly Lindira and Jese threatening to have sex, Lindira flying into rages for no reason (she is extremely quick-tempered) and Jese apologizing incessantly, also for no reason.

Around the 35% mark, the threats to have sex begin to turn concrete as Lindira demands that Jese shove his hand up her. If he won't do it, she'll use a stone instead. After several more pages of yada yada which include a discussion of natural eco-friendly lubricant, Jese finally does what she wants. The description made me glad I'm an old maid and never went in for that sort of thing, but I was in a frozen wince for days.

This is all done in a good cause: to prepare Lindira for the final ordeal which will break the wizard's curse. After another lengthy bout of yada yada, Von finally comes back, they do it, the curse is broken, Lindira is restored to health and her murdered lover is restored to life, and everyone lives happily ever after.

I presume Somerville sees this book as a loss leader intended to whet people's appetite for her other fiction: that would explain it being free and short. I was grateful for the free, but unfortunately it wasn't short enough. All the tedious blather and wince-inducing descriptions of sex made it almost impossible to get through; after finishing it, I felt as if I'd endured a particularly gruesome keelhauling. I don't dare think what reading one of Somerville's longer works would do to me.

Two stars: ordinarily I'd say that the number of typos and unorthodox punctuation were just over the permissible limit and would earn an automatic one star. But since it was free I give it two.

I love shape shifter stories. The idea of changing form and exploring the world has immense appeal. So when I read the blurb for Lindira, I knew I had to read the story. I mean, a shape shifting dolphin...how cool is that?

The story’s dark beginning sets the undertone and character arc for Lindira. The world she lives in is ruled by an evil wizard that wants all shifters eradicated. After watching her lover’s horrific death, she is abused, mutilated and left to drown.

Jese and his lover Von have been on an island for decades, suffering their own curse delivered by the same wizard. They’ve been changed into human/beast creations and can only be saved by a woman that loves them both physically—at the same time.

Lindira washes up on the island and Jese helps her recover. They learn about their different curses. Despite Lindira’s wish to join her lover in death, she decides to help Jese and Von break their curse as her last act before moving on.

As I stated before, I’m drawn to shifter stories. I really wanted to love this book, but I didn’t. I couldn’t connect emotionally with Lindira. Let me make it clear, I felt the tragedy she suffered. The disconnect seemed to come more from the aloof and detached personality Lindira had. As a dolphin, she didn’t care much for humans. Was really indifferent to them. Dolphins are playful, curious creatures. Lindira’s attitude didn’t translate from both sides of her nature.

Luckily, Jese stole the story. I loved his character. His caring and gentleness represented a good soul. His devotion to his partner Von, despite their forced captivity showed a deep love and sense of integrity. Von’s character was also more compelling than Lindira. He showed tenderness and compassion toward Jese and Lindira, refusing to hurt either one of them.

I wish more of Lindira’s human characteristics had been evident at the beginning of the story. Each of us has levels to our emotions and personality. If I’d seen more from hers I would have connected with her character better. Thankfully, the book’s conclusion showed me a likeable side to Lindira. Her erotic connection to Jese and Von helped break the curse, and her emotional reaction finally showed a bit of human nature…the dual side of her psyche.

Lindira, desperate to die so she can join her beloved in the afterlife, begs Jese to kill her. When he insists he can’t, but his lover might, she decides to wait a while until Von comes back from his hunt. Upon realizing that Jese and Von are cursed and their only way out is for a woman to willingly sleep with the both of them at the same time – while Von is so inhumanly enlarged that it would endanger the woman – she decides that her final act in life will be to help them. I was actually impressed by the amount of thought that went into this and it worked really well. Even though most of the story is pure sex, I felt a lot of emotions while reading this.

It’s just a short story, but the characters are amazingly well fleshed-out. Especially Lindira, who goes through the whole range of emotions in the span of these ~22,000 words, is a character that just breaks your heart. Jese, who spends most of the beginning of the story trying to either help Lindira or distance himself from her, comes across as one of the sweetest guys ever and even Von, who’s mostly seen in sexual situations, touched my heart in some way.

I really wasn't expecting anything out of this book. This is the second book I have ever read by this author, and the first one was a short gay romance.

Let me be honest. I must have been living under a rock not to know that GBLT Romance novels were out there.

This book...wow...has the best sex scene I have read in years! It was great! I was dumbfounded and surprised that it was inserted so well (no pun intended). The lead in made me think this scene was going to be, well...awkward. It wasn't. Instead, it was HOT!

I loved the characters! The main character Lin was recovering from a horrific experience and going through the stages of grief...it was completely believable and honest.

The end wasn't a huge bang for me BUT, it was a totally unexpected ending.

Once you are done reading this, you will need some time to sit back and absorb what you just read. It is awesome and I would totally recommend this for anyone 18 and over with an open mind!

If I'd read a bare bones synopsis of this story, I probably would have written it off as a ludicrous sex fantasy and never even have started it. Sort of a "Beauty and the Beast" tale with a very complicated menage, it's definitely way out there, but the lovably flawed humanity of the characters and the genuineness of their emotions made it work for me. I'm giving it a high grade because I'm so impressed with how much the author accomplished in such a short story.

Note that this is erotica, not romance: there is a happy ending (too happy, I thought: ) but not the one romance readers might expect.

Enjoyable short story. And free, too. Only downside is that it ends on a bit of an unfinished note...perhaps there is a sequel planned?

Quite something really. At the beginning I was confused, later bemused and eager and at the end slightly deflated, because the whole situation didn't turn out as I thought it would. Great twist at the end! Somerville has a thing for these types of stories.

I was concerned about how I would feel about Lindira given the other reviews, but I personally enjoyed it. If you are expecting m/m erotica, look elsewhere, but otherwise it was a short and sweet read.

Utterly goofy fantasy, but likable for all that.
