A native Virginian, Sara sold her first published romance novel, FLASH OF DARK, an urban fantasy romance pitting vampires against the Fae, in 2009. Since that fateful day, she's published over 20 books in various sub-genres of romance, been generously honored with several awards, and saved the world from evil chocolate chip cookies.

Though she may insist otherwise, Sara loves the places her mind conjures and has always been fascinated by the strange, the unusual, the twisted and the lost (tortured heroes are her personal favorite). She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this geekiness, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story.

My review is gonna be very spoilery and probably very confusing so I'm sorry about that 🙊

TW: Very bad representation of physical abuse

So that was ... something 😅
I know it's a short story so you don't have much time to really develop the story but it sounded more like an excuse to write 2 sex scenes than anything else.

So we have 2 characters.
Brady: the doctor who at the beginning lose another patient and he's having (understandably) a mental breakdown because of it and run away.
Garrett: is a gargoyle or another type of statue which is basically a guardian angel but scarier and has been looking over Brady for a really long time. He is only allowed to come help him when he needs it the most and this is the time.

So yeah they meet when Brady is watching at the gargoyle on a building, they talk for 5 min, Garrett gave Brady his business card to come and see the gargoyles from up close. The next day Brady comes back the next day and they gave him a card to access Garrett's penthouse. He's surprised but still goes up like it's no big deal.

G arrive a bit after, they talk again for 5 min, eat, have sex scene number 1. The next day Brady wakes up and there's a note on G's bed telling him to come at sunset.
B goes back to the hospital and feel much better after his session of healing sex and also managed to change his vision on life. He takes one patient and since we need some drama it is again a child but this time he and his mom are victims of physical abuse. With his new perspective on life B manage to convince the mom to do an Xray on the boy, but unfortunately his ribs randomly punctured his lungs so B gets to play the hero and "redeem" himself. He then leave after telling the mom that she has to get away from her husband because it is sunset and he can't wait to tell G about what he did.
The nurse was like are you for real ? 🤨 But let him go anyway (even though she's not his boss) since she didn't expect him to be here after he run away and apparently wasn't there either the day before :')

Anyway he goes back to the G's house he sees a gargoyle kisses it and surprise G is here. We have some info dump about gargoyle that are not gargoyle but let's call them that anyway. B also tell him what he did blah blah blah sex scene number 2 and end of the book.

The paranomal elements and the hospital elements were honestly just there not to have a one shot smut scene on wattpad. G was also weirdly aroused when B was touching the gargoyles 😂

Talking about physical abuse is extremely important but it was clearly put in there just for the drama. The time where B goes back to the hospital, check on the child, find out about the physical abuse, help them for 1h30, goes back to the building to have sex scene number 2 all being in a single chapter. When he goes back to the building to the end of the book being the longer part in the chapter.
And worst part is the fact that he was more excited about telling "look I did good" than to keep an eye on the kid and see how his surgery would go says a lot about this short story. I mean in which hospital a doctor would have a shift this short ? Seriously it makes no sense 😂

I was planning on giving it 2 or 3 stars because at first it seemed like a rather plain smutty short story, but the storyline with the child (if we can call it that) was so poorly executed that it would have been too high of a rating.

I'm sorry that's such a long review for such a short book 🙊

Gothic fans, lover of Gargoyles, this is the book for you! There is something about a Gargoyle or in this book; Grotesques that is so sexy to me. Gargoyles are stone creatures created to allow rain to siphon off buildings, like a downspout. Grotesques are stone carvings which do not function as a downspout. See, reading erotic novels are educational. In Ms. Brooke’s Hard as Stone, we meet a guardian watching over Brady. Brady is a trauma surgeon who is burned out. Alone and depressed from the latest string of patient deaths, Brady is lost. Garrett has been watching Brady for years. He’s there to protect and aid Brady.

When Garrett finally reveals himself to Brady, a sigh of relief can be heard. This symbiotic relationship is the start of a new chapter, for both. I found this story to be very sweet and heartwarming. This is the book I’d read when I’m down and out and want a bit of sweet loving and cuddling. The BDSM in this story is very light. So light that I’m not sure I can even classify it as SugarKink. The erotic scenes between Garrett and Brady are smexy and delightful. I enjoyed it on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

This contemporary m/m love story poses no heavy conflict. There are no dire situations or love wronged that need to be set right. Instead, it’s about two lovers who finally meet and come together. One who has been yearning for years while the other is oblivious. Yet when the truths are revealed, the heart recognizes each other and we end with a start to something magical. I recommend this book to m/m lovers who want a little bit of magic to their story.

*Received from Reading Alley for honest review

Sara Brookes does a great job of telling the story of Brady McDonnell, an emergency room physician with a heart of gold who craves an enigmatic gargoyle named Garrett. Brady wants to save every patient just as most doctors do except when he finds himself on a downward spiral of losing patients one after another, he falls headlong into a depressed, panicked state. Garrett carefully watches him from a distant and figures it is time to stop Brady's self destruction and show him his real feelings.

The story takes on a romantic edge yet still stays aligned with something more than the two men loving each other since they were in college. Brady has his work and the readers get to follow him on his excursions but I did feel left out with Garrett's back story. I would have liked to know more about how he became a gargoyle and what gargoyles actually do (other than sit on buildings of course). Furthermore, I was a little shocked that Brady wasn't shocked about seeing a gargoyle turn into the man he loves. I expected more reaction and felt the story suffered slightly due to that climax not being fully fulfilled for the readers. We knew it was coming but when it came, it was lackluster. Overall, I though the book was well written and detailed. The erotic scenes were a good balance to the story although Garrett's character needs more development. Solid M/M read.

2.5 stars

Brady McConnell thrives on saving patients in his busy emergency room, but a handful of failures send him tumbling over the edge of sanity. There to catch him is real estate mogul, Garrett Stafford. Brady has always been jealous of Garrett's carefree attitude toward life, love and sex, but through the good and the bad, his sexy-as-hell best friend has always been at Brady's side.

All the money in the world can't buy Garrett the one thing he wants the most--Brady. But seeing Brady broken and exhausted on a busy, snow-covered Chicago street just days before Christmas is the last straw. Garrett finally gives in to the temptation that has haunted him for years and shows Brady there's more to life than rescuing those in need.

Roused by their desperate passion for one another, their desire reaches an explosive breaking point. Brady realizes one night isn't enough, but the always secretive Garrett is bound by rules he can't change. Now Brady's healing touch may save more than just a life...it may just save Garrett's soul.

My Review:
2.5 stars

I have very mixed feelings about this story. While parts of it worked for me, others didn’t. To start with, the writing was good, but there was one part of it that really threw me off, the switches between thought and reality. Thoughts would be randomly thrown in, with nothing to separate them from everything else going on. Sometimes it was easier to figure out that it was a thought, but a few times I had to go back and re-read the paragraph to decipher what was what, which really took me out of the story. On the other hand, the characters were well developed and interesting, especially Brady. I really felt for Brady and felt that I got to know and connect with him and his struggle. It was also interesting to get to learn about Garrett, though there were mysterious tidbits that were introduced (like what happened with his family) but never explained, which made it hard for me to really connect with him.

For the plot, the story started off well. We got to see Brady’s breakdown and what led up to it, as well as getting background information on Brady and Garrett. The story drew me in at this point because a lot was going on, which kept the story moving quickly. As it went along though, it slowed down for me and became an in-depth romance, which I normally like, but didn’t work as well for me here. I just couldn’t get behind it, partially because Garrett was still a mystery and partially because the story went from being a getting to know you romance to an extended sex scene. While the sex was hot, it went on long enough that I found myself skipping ahead to try and see what would happen next in their relationship. I then ran into my biggest issue with the book.

My biggest issue came in the end when I wasn’t able to suspend disbelief. Brady’s entire world is crashing down around him yet one night is enough to magically fix everything and give Brady an entire new look on life? I find this extremely difficult to believe and unrealistic. I’ve been in a similar position before and it took a long time for me to work things out, yet it’s magically fixed in one day for Brady. I might have been able to suspend disbelief and go along with this if there were a magical reasoning behind this (fated mates, spell, etc.), yet the paranormal aspect is played down and doesn’t really play a large role in the story. The story started out so well and I thought it was going to become more of a hurt/comfort story, where we saw their relationship develop while Brady healed. Yet it was rushed at the end, which I felt was a disservice since the story started out so well. However, I did like Brady’s reaction to Garrett’s big reveal as it was different than what I was expecting and worked for the story.

While I think the book showed a lot of promise, it just didn’t deliver for me. As I said above, a lot of the beginning deals with their relationship as friends and then beginning a romantic relationship, and then we practically skip to a HEA that’s more of a HFN because it left a giant elephant in the room in regards to their future working out. I think the book would have been much better if more time was spent in the middle/end of the book developing Brady and Garrett’s relationship as a romantic couple after they decided to give it a try instead of just in the beginning. I decided to give this 2.5 stars because while I did enjoy certain parts of the story as well as its potential, I was left underwhelmed and a bit disappointed by the end.

The challenge of friends becoming lovers

3.75 stars “Hard as Stone by Sara Brookes features trauma doctor, Brady Aaron McConnell, who is just about at the end of his rope when he is thrown a lifeline from his friend Garrett Stafford, who is not only there for him when he really needs a friend, but who has also purchased a building that Brady likes to stare at. They finally start to intensify their relationship, but first secrets have to be shared…and Garrett fears that his may be too much to be accepted.

This sizzling m/m paranormal story is an entertaining read but I wish it was a bit longer. There is a bonus excerpt at the end to whet one’s appetite for a story in an entirely different genre that is also intriguing for those of us who like BDSM erotic ménage stories, and while I enjoyed the glimpse, I still wished for more background on Brady and Garrett. The main story is intriguing for me because I like gargoyle tales and I thought there was a poignant introduction to Brady and the pressures of his job, but I didn’t get much of a feel for Garrett other than his caring and lust for Brady. Brady was pretty low-key about the big reveal and I can’t help wondering how things are going to play out with a connection that can only progress during the evening hours. The sensual interludes are nice and spicy, but this was more like a snapshot on the relationship and there are so many questions to still be answered, so I hope this is the beginning of a series or that the author plans to come back and extend the story, as I think this is an excellent start but definitely want more than the happy for now ending.

In an interesting variation on the gargoyle legend, this story is about Garrett, a gargoyle, who stands watch over Brady, an ER doctor who feels as though he is failing at his job. The background legend is slightly different form what I have read so far, and that made this version more interesting to me. However, the focus of the story is the developing relationship between the two men, not the paranormal aspects (which I think is a lost opportunity in this story).

Garrett is very lonely; he is not allowed to make himself known unless someone takes an interest in him. He has watched Brady for a long time and wants him to be the one. Not coming forward when he can so clearly see Brady's need for help must have been very hard for him, but he remains in control.

Brady tries to be perfect, is totally dedicated to saving lives, and has a breakdown when he encounters more trouble than usual. He urgently needs a reminder that he is only human and cannot expect himself to save all his patients. Garrett is the one to provide this perspective, and Brady can finally let go.

If you like stories about new relationships with just a hint of the supernatural, and if you enjoy reading about hot between-the-sheets and on-the-balcony action, then you may like this story.

This was a light quick read. Not too bad, as it goes for this type of novellette. Liked the characters, the sex was good. So, for readers of m/m, yes I'd recommend as a quick read.

When I read the blurb for Hard as Stone by Sara Brookes, I knew I just had to read it. It’s quite a treat for me when an author uses my favorite paranormal creature – gargoyles that is. I find them very sad and romantic. To have to sit over the city and watch the world pass them by while they guard ever the silent protectors - which is exactly what Garrett is. This quick read was sweet and romantic…and yes it was hot. The relationship between Garrett and Brady is simple and sweet and I was more than satisfied with their HEA.

Anyone who enjoys gargoyles as much as I do will like Hard as Stone.
