Τη νύχτα της 2ας Αυγούστου 1939, ένας πολλά υποσχόμενος Αμερικανός ανθρωπολόγος, ο Μπιουλ Κουέιν, αυτοκτόνησε τελετουργικά στα είκοσι επτά του χρόνια, ενώ προσπαθούσε να επιστρέψει στον πολιτισμό από ένα χωριό ιθαγενών στη βραζιλιάνικη ενδοχώρα. Το γεγονός ενόχλησε πολλούς συναδέλφους του, γι’ αυτό και ξεχάστηκε αμέσως και παρέμεινε ουσιαστικά άγνωστο στο πλατύ κοινό.
Εξήντα δύο χρόνια αργότερα, μαθαίνοντας κατά τύχη την ιστορία αυτή, ο αφηγητής του βιβλίου αποφασίζει να ερευνήσει τις αιτίες της αυτοκτονίας. Στην πεισματική του μελέτη των επιστολών του νεκρού και της διαθήκης ενός μηχανικού, που υπήρξε φίλος του νεκρού στους τελευταίους μήνες της ζωής του, ο αφηγητής θα καθοδηγηθεί από προσωπικούς λόγους, οι οποίοι θα αποκαλυφθούν στο τέλος μόνο του μυθιστορήματος.

Ένα βιβλίο που κινείται στη μυστηριώδη εκείνη γραμμή μεταξύ πραγματικότητας και μυθοπλασίας, από τα καλύτερα έργα που παρουσίασε τα τελευταία χρόνια η βραζιλιάνικη λογοτεχνία.

Bernardo Carvalho (Rio de Janeiro, 1960) é um escritor e jornalista brasileiro.

Foi editor do suplemento de ensaios Folhetim, e correspondente da Folha de São Paulo em Paris e Nova Iorque. Seus dois primeiros livros foram editados na França.

Bernardo Carvalho teve o seu livro Mongólia distinguido com o prêmio APCA da Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte, edição 2003, na categoria romance, depois de ter já vencido, a meias com Dalton Trevisan (Pico na Veia) o Prêmio Portugal Telecom de Literatura Brasileira, com o romance Nove Noites.

Početkom dvehiljaditih američki novinar slučajno (sa ovim se do kraja nekako provuče, kroz iglene uši) počinje da istražuje samoubistvo dvadesetsedmogodišnjeg američkog antropologa Bjuela Kvejna, mladog i naočitog avanturiste iz bogate porodice, koji se bavio Indijancima po Amazonu krajem tridesetih. Taj novinar je Bernando Karvaljo, a to svoje istraživanje je opisao u romanu Devet noći. Od ovako kvalitetnih sastojaka se svašta moglo spremiti, ali je Karvaljo presolio. Kao da saznanje da se neke istine nikad ne otkriju nije dovoljno nesnosna!

Trudim se da izbegavam pisce koji pišu za novine i novinare koji pišu knjige jer se najčešće ispostavlja da dobijem od oba po malo, što je sinonim za osrednjost. Ovde imamo slučaj novinara koji se, izgleda, divi Zebaldu sa kojim mu je najveća sličnost što je u svoju knjigu ubacio fotografije stvarnih ljudi (između ostalog i Klod Levi-Strosa). Sve ostalo je upitno.

Nije ovo katastrofa, nije ni glupo, ni dosadno i donelo mi je nekoliko zanimljivih saznanja, ali je tako sabijeno da deluje rastegnuto (na 160 strana!) i teško prohodno, iako je jasno da je to urađeno namerno i da je manje-više postignut željeni efekat. Mislim da bi ispalo elegantnije i manje naivno da je autor obuzdao svoje spisateljske ambicije jer se u igranju sa formom nije snašao. Tada bismo, verovatno, dobili dobar triler ili dokumentarac gde bi se već našao producent koji bi mu izbacio bar dve trećine imena.

Um romance mais ou menos policial e histórico com uma narrativa jornalística. Os ingredientes estavam bem equilibrados para fazer uma boa estória, mas achei tudo muito confuso o que frustrou a leitura. O final também não ajudou em nada a melhorar a experiência.

When I finished reading this novel, I immediately returned to the beginning and read it again. It's extraordinarily complex and convoluted. It took two careful readings to fully grasp the intricacies of the storyline.
It's a very strange unusual novel in its construction. In the first reading it took a long time to "get into" the story. The writing style is stiff and formal. As the plot began to open up (but not without mystery) so did the writing style. It's hard to grasp who is talking at times. The author has set an exacting task for the reader.
There are many characters in this story and shifting time sequences and this doesn't assist reader comprehension.
It took the second reading to appreciate the masterly writing skill of the author. However an author can write a reader out of the process of telling a story. It is a very clever novel, almost cunning. However it would benefit from being a little more reader accessible.
Lyrical it is not.
There is an ethic in question here with this novel. It's the thing that once a person is dead you can say what you like about them and not be called for slander. That practice denies what the ancestor's reputation means to his or her descendants.
This story is written about an actual person and events, using the person's name and the names of associates. Rather than it being a biography, the writer has declared it a work of fiction. How So?
Conclusions that the author has drawn from speculation might just as easily be regarded as posthumous defamation of character.
Oddly enough, before reading much of the story, I happened to look at the photos of both the author and the main character of the story and thought they were the same person. The resemblance is striking. Hmmmm.

A leitura não eu das mais fáceis -- não pelos termos utilizados pelo autor, mas sim pela complicada ordem em que as peças do quebra-cabeça são dispostas ao longo da leitura. É um livro rápido de ler, mas confesso que achei ele simplório, sem grandes reflexões.
-- o que é curioso, dado que o personagem central da história parece sofrer de uma angústia terrível.

A maior parte das páginas é dedicada a pontuar fatos aqui e acolá, montando o mosaico em que se baseia o romance. E quando o narrador tem acesso ao que parece ser a "cola" para todo esse mistério o livro se esvai rapidamente em poucas páginas. Não deixa de ser uma forma válida de se terminar um livro, mas eu particularmente fiquei um pouco decepcionada. Acho que eu espera um pouco mais de relatos sobre as emoções do narrador -- ou mesmo do personagem principal.

Não é um livro ruim, de forma alguma. Mas acredito que tenham livros bem mais ricos a serem lidos do que esse.

This book may be a bit difficult to read (in other words, not generally likable), but its style is certainly interesting. The story line is simple: the narrator is investigating the suicide of a young American anthropologist committed some 60 years ago in Brazil (this is the non-fictitious part of the story). The narrator's account of the events alternates with letters written by a local friend of the deceased researcher, addressed to someone who was expected to come. The reconstruction of Buell Quain's life is very fragmentary and chaotic, composed of bits and pieces put together mostly from correspondence and few interviews with people who knew him or were somehow related to him. The narrator also throws in recollections of his childhood experiences with Indians (this is the autobiographical part).
In the case of this novel, it is not so important WHAT is described, but HOW. Unlike typical mystery stories where one thing leads to another as discoveries are made in the course of investigation, nothing is presented with certainty here. It all happened long time ago. Evidence is fragmentary, motives unclear. The narrator probably does not possess all the clues; he is only human, after all. As the story progresses, there are more open points than ascertained facts. You share the narrator's confusion and frustration over the pieces of information that are lost forever. By the time you read the last page, you will find yourself thinking: "Did I miss something?" And maybe you start all over again, hoping that there must be an explanation. But does it really?

Como já disse, orgulho da literatura brasileira por criar um suspense de tamanha qualidade e que nos faz refletir e imaginar não só a verdade do que aconteceu, mas também a respeito da verdade em si - como pode nos atormentar e nos frustrar. Sigo frustrada por não saber o final e sei que posso ler e reler para tentar formular minhas hipóteses, mas provavelmente ninguém nunca saberá o que aconteceu com o antropólogo. A verdade pode ser o que fazemos dela... E acabou se perdendo com a idade das mentes que a comheciam.

H ιστορία του εθνολόγου Buell Quain, ο οποίος στα 27 του χρόνια αυτοκτόνησε ενώ επέστρεφε στην πόλη μετά από τη πεντάμηνη διαμονή του στη ζούγκλα σ’ ένα χωριό των Ινδιάνων Κραχό που μελετούσε, κι ενώ είχε πρόσφατα λάβει κάποιες επιστολές από την οικογένειά του, τις οποίες κατέστρεψε, κι έστειλε άλλες τόσες που έγραψε την τελευταία του νύχτα. Αλήθεια και μυθοπλασία μπλέκονται με μαεστρία κυριώς μέσω της αφήγησης του μηχανικού που πέρασε εννέα νύχτες με τον εθνολόγο στη διάρκεια των τελευταίων μηνών της ζωής του, ενώ ο κύριος αφηγητής, ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας, παραθέτει ιστορικά στοιχεία και επιστολές προσπαθώντας να ξετυλίξει το κουβάρι και να βρει το κίνητρο και τον λόγο που οδήγησαν τον Quain να βάλει τέρμα στη ζωή του. Στο τέλος μας αποκαλύπτει και τα δικά του κίνητρα. Ένα κείμενο που βρίθει πληροφοριών, πρόσωπα, ονόματα, τοπωνύμια, που νομίζω δεν έχει πολλή σημασία να μπορείς να τα συγκρατήσεις. “Αυτό είναι για όταν έρθεις”, η ουσία είναι αλλού, στην όγδοη χαμένη επιστολή που στάλθηκε σε εσένα για να βγάλεις τα δικά σου συμπεράσματα. Γιατί δεν υπάρχει μία αλήθεια, ο καθένας μας ζει τη δική του. Γοητευτικό ανάγνωσμα, ένα μυστήριο χωρίς λύση, και μια επιτυχημένα συναρπαστική άσκηση ύφους, που “όταν έρθεις” δεν σε αφήνει να την αφήσεις.

Nove Noites me enganchou desde a primeira página e foi me envolvendo na investigação sobre o suicídio do antropólogo americano, me fazendo formular minhas próprias teorias. Tão fascinante quanto foi mergulhar no passado do narrador - que só depois vim a saber que era também do autor (tornando tudo ainda mais interessante) - para entender porque, para ele, a floresta tinha um significado tão diferente e como seu caminho “se cruzou” com a do antropólogo.

estou impactada com o rumo final do livro. desconfianças, mentiras, investigações e uma suposta relação... o livro me deixou confusa, muitas informações ao mesmo tempo e os narradores eram difíceis de serem identificados. gostei da leitura, no entanto, intrigante.

Leitura obrigatória do vestibular da ufpr.
Bonzinho dentro do gênero jornalístico (o qual não me agrada).
Por mais que seja uma leitura bem rápida, me cansou pelos diálogos serem feitos de maneira descritiva, acabei me perdendo algumas vezes.
O que me fez realmente não gostar muito do livro foi o fato de ter 0 conclusão de história. É feito todo um ciclo, muita coisa acontece mas no final chega em nada. Não há uma resposta, o que pode ter sido inteligente para o autor mas frustrante para o leitor.
Além disso, não me simpatizei muito com os dois narradores, e o que conheceu o antropólogo faz umas explicações um pouco filosóficas deixando muito difícil o entendimento, principalmente nos capítulos finais.
Enfim, a parte legal foi saber algumas características culturais de povos indígenas que eu não ainda não tinha conhecimento.
Não é escancaradamente ruim, mas se o autor tivesse usado o cenário do antropólogo para a construção de um conto épico indígena, ou mesmo um suspense, teria ficado melhor.

Among the best books out of those that commonly integrate the bibliography of brazilian universities' entrance exams. Rather than a detective story, the fragmentary narrative feels more like the process of retrieving a complete image of a past event using parts of your memory that feel more vivid the more you relive them inside your mind. It's a common occurrence for a fake memory to become real the more it is thought about, and Quain's story follows the same route, where every artifact is corroded by time. Every piece of the puzzle is brought by a person with their own opinions, and their vision of the events, as well as their relationship to its characters, compose an intricate tapestry.

While each chapter reveals more details that elucidate former questions, some are still left open and even more appear. I would say that the reader must perform their own detective work to properly grasp the book. Someone once said that knowing what to ask is more important than to know the answers, and this book does not give you all the questions.

However, its greatest merit is the interweaving of several parallel stories as the narrator's investigation progresses. Not only does Quain's life resembles that of the narrator's, but his obsession also mirrors the narrator's. Similar stories appear in side characters, and with the constant repetition over time we are led to believe in the cycles. Especially in my experience, since I became obsessed with the book too.
