About the author

Anna Banti is the pseudonym of Lucia Lopresti, an Italian biographer, critic, and author of fiction. Much of her fiction has a central theme of women's struggles for equal opportunity.

Banti graduated from the University of Rome. She directed the literary section of the magazine Paragone and took on direction of the art section after the death of her husband, famous art critic Roberto Longhi.

Her most famous work is Artemisia, based on life of seventeenth-century painter Artemisia Gentileschi, written when she was 52 years old.

Banti died in Ronchi di Massa, Italy, at the age of 90.

Un Grido Lacerante, cioè un' intima confessione con cui Agnese Lanzi, chiaramente alter-ego dell'autrice, racconta con ritmo incalzante la sua vita, dall'infanzia agli ultimi anni, passata in gran parte all'ombra di un uomo da lei profondamente amato e stimato, probabilmente invidiato. Riconosciuto e apprezzato critico d'arte e docente, lui è tutto ciò che, più di tutto, avrebbe voluto essere anche lei.

In un libro di Anna Banti bisogna accettare che tutto è evocazione, metafisica, anche vaghezza, perché il peso del racconto è equamente distribuito con la lingua scelta: ricercata, esatta, introspettiva. Per me la narrazione è decollata dopo il primo terzo del libro.
