Premonition

Rate this book
Martin Proctor has been on the Boston Police Force for ten years. His record is impeccable and he's helped his precinct and captain maintain one of the best crime records in the city. But no one knows Martin has premonitions which help him solve cases others find impossible.

Justin Franklin is also on the Boston force. Justin may not have supernatural abilities, but as an openly gay man, he possesses a courage that draws Martin in.

When Martin has a premonition about the death of Justin's brother and fails to save him, their lives become intertwined. As they work together to discover the truth behind Larry's murder, Martin foresees Justin's death.

The closer they come to cracking their case, the less time Martin has to piece together his fragmented visions and save Justin before it's too late.

EEK! I am so far behind in my reviews, but I have some questions about this so I am going to get my thoughts out now rather than wait til later.

Martin and Justin. Hmmmm...I really liked them together. However, I wanted to know more about them. I wanted more of a backstory for both, but especially Martin. How did he get his ability? Has he ever told ANYONE? Parents? Was he freaked out when they first started? Did he ever try to save someone before he became a cop? We kind of got thrown into the deep end when this started, but that's okay. Other than that, I loved them together. Their first time, I cried. I never cry during sex scenes. I cried. Being in Justin's head at that point was perfect. I loved it.

The mystery. It kept me turning pages. The only reason I took breaks from reading was to pick up my kiddos from school and cook dinner. I was interested in how they were going to get the bad guy. Here's what I want to know.

This was my first book by D.H. Starr and it won't be my last, that's for sure.

A bad story that continued to get worse. It was like having the life slowly sucked from me. The basic premise of the story was good, but the characters acted like stompy brats even while working as partners on the police force. Spelling and misuse of words were pathetic.

I really tried to keep reading until the end because I wanted to know how this got wrapped up and just how unbelievable it would be but I just couldn't do it. I got to the last 50 pages before giving up.

The blurb sounds promising -- and I do have a weakness with stories regarding cops and detectives. Unfortunately, the execution doesn't work for me. I am trying to figure out why. Maybe it's how Martin gets turn on in a funeral. Maybe it's how he tells Justin everything within days of knowing him as a partner and not to his ex-partner of ten years (where is the trust??). Maybe it's how the premonition makes things easy, from "seeing" the crime to solving who the murderer or bad guys are. I think I miss the procedural steps, and the tension of investigation. That is why around 1/3 of the book, my interest going spirally downward.

If you take this book strictly as a mystery, it is actually not half bad. Two powerful men, whose motivations are comprehensible enough to be halfway realistic, are cooking up a conspiracy that will throw several dozen of underprivileged families out of their homes. Martin (and Justin) take the role of a brave David against an overwhelming Goliath who has even their captain tucking in his tail. Normally, I’m a sucker for this kind of storyline. Add in two hardboiled policemen who not only have the hots for each other but are courageous and emotionally un-impaired enough to own up to their mutual feelings, and the book should sweep me off my feet.

However, it didn’t. Instead, I found myself more and more irritated the farther I read – but why exactly it irked me so, I couldn’t put my finger on it. So I read it again (to the same result, by the way), but now I’m at least able to put my problems into words.

First, this book required a lot of suspension of disbelief from me, starting with the fact that Martin and Justin, as detectives, actually patroled the neighborhood. I admit I’m not an expert, but I found the fact that Detectives went on patrol slightly odd. I thought only “normal” officers did that? Then again, I’m not an insider on Boston PD procedure. At least the cases they dealt with sounded quite realistic.
Then, the assumed fact that Martin had been able to conceal his supernatural abilities from his former partner Kevin for ten years? Kevin must have been thicker than pudding not to figure out for ten whole years what Justin understood after a few days as Martin’s partner. What’s more, Kevin and Martin were described as “closer than brothers” – I couldn’t help asking myself, if they were so close where’s the trust?
Next, the whole clairvoyance thing in and of itself. Martin places a lot of reliance on his premonitions, to a point that I felt as if his whole proficiency as a policeman depended solely on them, like he took a premonition and then went about to match his findings to it.
Professionally speaking, both he and Justin did a lot of things that struck me as odd. Again, I’m not an expert in police procedure, but I don’t think interviewing a suspect – and a politically charged one at that – all alone, without even a recording device, can be proper protocol, to pick only one thing.

Speaking of investigating, there were some convenient jacks-in-boxes aside from Martin’s premonitions who helped solve the crime, like a mysterious informant called “Mouse” (whose identity remained hidden), a detailed diary entry or a slightly obtuse criminal who suddenly decided to listen to the voice of reason. Though serving as shortcuts, those little shenanigans alone wouldn’t have bothered me much, but in the context they added to my overall irritation.

The interactions, most of all those between Martin and Justin, were somewhat off, too, considering the acting characters are supposed to be grown men. With Justin and Martin, there is the whole mutual-attraction-on-first-sight trope, and they are both happy to have a new partner who is also gay so they can understand each other on an entirely different level, and they are investigating the murder of Justin’s brother which must put Justin under considerable emotional stress – I get that, I get it all. But the way they are spilling their respective guts to each other after only knowing each other for a few days appeared too much too early, especially given their stated backgrounds. And then, a minor omission on Martin’s side almost trashed their budding relationship as Justin blew it up to a major trust issue, which in turn threw Martin into the deepest black depths of self-loathing at the thought of losing his partner. To me, this read like a tempest in a teacup, pure drama-queen-ism and an artificial conflict that was completely gratuitous.

Anyway, the emotions. As the book is written from changing third-persons POV’s, the reader is partial to both heroes’ inner workings, immersed in them, actually, as both men are constantly in a considerable inner turmoil. Whatever emotion they feel is so deep, so shaking, it makes stomachs clench, heads spin and palms dampen. Like this for example:

Two hours and one report later, Justin was in a cab heading home. Exhausted, drained, and simmering with unexpressed fury, fi re seared directly into his veins. His muscles ached from he tension and shuddering, his fi sts clamped so tightly his nails cut into his palms.

Now, I like intense, emotionally charged scenes like the next reader. But when every single emotion causes the hero to clench his fists or makes bile rise in his throat, I find myself a bit overwhelmed. Like the proverbial boy crying “wolf” one time too many, this kind of “purple prose” (from lack of a better expression) gave me problems to differentiate between what was really crucial and what wasn’t.

Aside from some grammar lapses and parts of dialogue that sounded “written” instead of “spoken”, this is about the gist of my issues. As usual, my opinion is only my own; there may be readers who’ll overlook the facts that bothered me so, and they might enjoy this book or even love it. With me, it just didn’t agree.

Martin is a hard-working detective who borders the line at work sometimes as he has premonitions. Premonitions which he just can’t ignore. So sometimes he dodges trouble by the skin of his teeth. Justin is also a detective who has just suffered the loss of his brother. As the two men work together they are drawn into danger even as they become more than just partners on the force.

This is a really great suspense/romance/paranormal story that at times will have you chewing your fingernails and perched on the edge of your seat. Martin has a heavy burden to bear, he has premonitions and although he does his best to change the outcome of those premonitions sometimes his best just isn’t enough. The guilt of those failures weighs heavily on his soul. He can’t share his knowledge without fear of being thought of as crazy so he stands alone without anyone to share his burden. Justin feels betrayed that Martin kept a secret from him and he finds it difficult to let it go and forgive him. The pressure is also affecting their working partnership and Justin struggles to trust Martin to do the right thing with the case. We get to experience both these men’s’ emotions; which is brilliant as they both experience anger, frustration, despair, love, hope, fear, betrayal and shock so you get the whole range of feelings.

This story-line is brilliant, the plot fantastic and the characters were incredible. This story will have you wondering and pondering, it will have you frustrated and miffed off and it will have you empathizing with both main characters. With both Martin and Justin, you can’t help wanting to choose sides and pick a favorite, but you can’t because you can see the problem from both points of view and they are both right… and wrong. Their relationship progresses well and they also share secrets early on but it doesn’t feel too soon. They both have an instinct to trust each other and you get the feeling that they were meant for each other. The sex between them is hot and erotic and there was one scene where Martin undressed when he was by himself that I found really erotic *pant pant, wiping drool from my chin*.

The suspense and mystery are great and moves along smoothly, it also keeps you guessing as the story pulls together. Warning: there are one or two strings left untied. So I have some questions that I’d like answered… who was Mouse? How did… (Oh that would give the story away), What about… damn everything I want to know will give the story away. Okay D.H. Starr at least please promise me that there is a sequel planned so that I can find out the answers.

So fantastic story, great hot sex, a wonderful mystery, lots of suspense, hot men, danger, paranormal, angst, and a great ending… I don’t know why you are still sitting there reading this review and not already clicking the link to get this book?? Honestly some people can’t take a hint. I recommend this story to everyone who loves any of the above.

Premonition is the story of Martin, a police detective who has a psychic gift. He has premonitions and can see future events before they happen. When he fails to stop a victim from being killed, he's overwhelmed with guilt because he wishes he'd done more to intervene, so he goes to the man's funeral. It is there that he meets the man's brother, Justin. Justin is also a police officer, and he ends up getting transferred to Martin's precinct where they become partners. Together, they investigate the murder of Justin's brother. They also fall in love with each other.

I really enjoyed this story, and I especially liked the romance of Martin and Justin. There were some plot issues that I struggled with, however. I couldn't understand why a hit man would be hired to kill a police officer, and then would show up to do the job with only a knife. Would he not be aware that the police officer would be armed?

There also was an informant who mysteriously provided a series of photos to the police detectives, and this informant knew everything that was going on at all times. He appeared to be watching the police officers, almost like Big Brother. It was never revealed who this mystery person was, and nobody seemed concerned about it. I think if photos showed up at a police station, the very first thing that the investigators would want to know is, "Who took these pictures?"

The other problem that I had was that I did not understand why these crooks first killed Larry Franklin and then tried to kill Justin Franklin. The way it was explained in the book was that they were targeting Justin in order to warn Martin that he should stop investigating the case. Why not just kill Martin?

I have to say that I really loved the writing style. I liked the love scenes and the dialogue. It was an entertaining read, but the plot issues kind of pulled me out of the story a bit.

I’m true, I’m not really a huge fan of cop thriller novels, and so, every time I start one, I have some preconceptions, but Premonition surprised me. Nor Martin or Justin are the usually tough cops who are scared to admit their feelings, on the contrary they are ready to acknowledge them almost as soon as they met, and they have little fear of the consequences.

Also the psychic skills of Martin, his premonitions, are dealt in a way that this novel is far from being a paranormal thriller. Martin’s premonitions are simply something more he has and that is allowing him to be a better cop. Justin’s reaction to them is fully accepting, and actually, he is a little like a kid that discovered a new functionality in his toy. That is probably one trait I found in both Martin than Justin, they still have the “innocence” of souls that is typically of young people, they are not yet jaded by life, and are able to face everything, life, love, with an open predisposition.

Of the two Martin is maybe the more cautious, and indeed he is one year older than Justin, but there is really little difference between the two of them. Maybe Martin had it easier on the job, Justin suffered from the homophobic attitude of his former precinct, and it’s a nice surprise to find in Martin not only a work partner but also a lover.

If you are more the romance type, and usually you skip the more mystery / thriller novels, Premonition can be a good middle way mix.

Premonition is as thrilling a page turner as I’ve read in a long time. I literally could not put it down. Mr. Starr writes his characters as if he knows them and his plot is so tense I was a bit unnerved every time one of the heroes was in danger.

This was my first DH Starr book. I enjoyed it and will be reading more by this talented author. Whether he decides to write full-on mysteries or continue to expand the erotic parts of his stories, I’m sure Mr. Starr’s books will be a treat to read.

I should have loved this but it just didn't hold my interest. The POV MC was overly dramatic and the love interest kind of immature. This was a good plot but it felt really dry and the chemistry felt a bit forced. (getting an erection at a funeral of a man whose death you blame on yourself just because you've seen a good looking man? Seriously? Maybe if the MC was a teenager and getting a hard on from a gentle breeze but a man in his thirties? Sexual interest can be shown without raging erections getting involved.)

If you're looking for a heartwarming, sensual read where the characters are enduring, the sex is hot, and the suspense will keep you turning the pages as you strive to figure out whether or not the heroes will get their man and find a Happily Ever After, then Premonition is definitely the book to read. Bravo Mr. Starr! Read more...

Martin is a cop and good at his job and is special how special you might say he sees the future sees glimpse of what is to happen and they not very good ones at that. When his partner leaves, Martin is partnered with Justin very handsome and openly gay cop, but is Martin ready for him and what is to come. This left me wanting more of these guys loved them so much.

Ok, I'm giving this a 3.5
This held a lot of promise, but in some areas it felt rushed. Like the relationship between the two MC's. In some areas it was predictable, but it still managed to keep my interest.
The ending suggests a possible sequel.

From the very first moment that Martin and Justin met there was great chemistry between them. I really enjoyed reading about them and the mystery they had to solve. Both of them made the book a great read for me and I'm hoping I get to read about them again.

Another novel by D.H. Starr. And it's a good thing. I know if I want to read a novel that is easy, exciting I can count on Starr to deliver. I finished the book in less than 24 hours. The writing for the sexual scenes were intoxicating. I'll admit I was aroused here & there.
