The Grip: A Horror Short Story
Lt. Cready and Engineer Andreas Chavez have been chosen to man a claustrophobic outpost on the outer edge of the solar system. After a year and a half with no word from Earth, nerves become frayed and tensions mount as Cready begins to suspect that his friend isn't entirely human.

The Grip is a short novella about Cready, Captain of an early warning outpost situated on the far outskirts of the universe in the distant future. His only company in the small box has been his home for over a year, is Chavez, and the in house automated computer.
Hayes does an excellent job of presenting the nessary background information in an interesting and subtle way that doesn't hinder the pace of the story. I found myself flying through the limited amount of pages, wondering where Hayes was leading me, with the ending leaving me hungry for more.
The Grip is a quick read with a thrilling story line with a bit of violence and gore thrown in for good measure. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi novel.

This short horror story was born out of a disturbing Kafkaesque thought that kept gnawing away at my brain. Am I really a human being or am I just a robot dreaming I'm a man. I set out to find the answer - I do this, incidentally, by writing the story and seeing where the journey takes me - and as I did, two other thoughts began to dawn on me. The first: If I suspected the worst, how far would I be willing to go to find the truth? The second: Can a robot go insane?

I really enjoyed this short story. Its thick, creepy atmosphere is sure to give you chills. Disturbing, thought-provoking and quite mesmerizing, it reminded me of some of my favorite literary geniuses (Kafka, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke). It's well written and powerful. I'm looking forward to reading more of Mr. Hayes' works!

The Grip by Griffin Hayes is a chilling little short horror/sci-fi story.
Wow. I actually sat there and thought 'Wow' to myself over and over when I finished reading it. I loved it.
There isn't a lot of characterisation in this novel; that would usually be a gripe for me, but The Grip simply doesn't need it. The characters are there to convey the horror of the story, rather than the other way round, as is true of most horror shorts. I really enjoyed the relationship between the two characters, or at least what there was of it, and it really made me question whether it was the character or the computer that were at fault as it came to a culimnation (you'll understand what I mean when you read it!)
The horror aspect, although brief, is gory and delightfully sickening, and the whole concept has been executed brilliantly - there were no points where I felt I needed clarification as to the why, what or where, as so often happens in short stories.
I would sincerely recommend this to anyone who loves a horror short - it's the best I've read in a long while (possibly since Hayes' Fatherland).

Suitably dark and disturbing story examining what it is to be human. Well written and very quick to read (should take less than 10 minutes to get through).
The rest of the download was made up of promo material excerpts from other works by Hayes, which were also very good and something I will check out in the future.

Another Swing and a Hit by Hayes!!
This is another Short story by Griffin Hayes that is a quick short read but it leaves you wanting more. I truly think this could be developed into a Novella with this short story being woven into the tapestry of the Novella towards the end.
It's definitely something that I would pick up and enthusiastically read.
If you haven't read "The Second Coming" another short story by Griffin I strongly suggest that you do if you liked this. I think that it's even better and has just as much potential if not more to be expanded on.
I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into his book "Bird of Prey" and will probably read his short story "Fatherland" today at some point.

Lt. Cready and Engineer Andreas Chavez were chosen to man outpost on the edges of the solar system. Stranded and out of contact with base, Cready's judgement falters and suspicions of his partner on the mission leads to a claustrophobic thriller.
This was my introduction to Mr. Hayes and I'm impressed. The Grip is currently free on amazon so I gave it chance. While reading you get a sense of the setting and mindset the main character is in. At first I found the dialogue between the Cready and Chavez characters a bit confusing but I believe the author did this to reflect the panicked state of Lt. Cready.
I am impressed with Griffin Hayes style and will actively seek out his other works.

A short story about a couple guys and a computer stuck on a remote outpost. Things turn out badly and all isn't what it seems. Methinks HAL has made a reappearance. Not a bad little story. Worth the price (free). but a nice quick diversion.

I normally don't like sci fi type stories at all but I loved this.
