Enter the world of Gossip Girl - a world of jealousy, betrayal, and $400 Christian Louboutin sandals.

Our college acceptance letters are arriving today. Those who do best will act all shocked and modest; the ones who fail miserably will declare how unimportant it all is, even though they secretly know they are doomed; Fee Fie Foe Fum, I smell a cat fight! Cecily von Ziegesar is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Gossip Girl novels, upon which the hit television show is based.

Cecily von Ziegesar was born in New York City. Her childhood dream was to grow up to be a ballerina; she began lessons at age 3 and auditioned for the School of American Ballet at age 8, but was rejected.

As a teenager, von Ziegesar commuted to Manhattan at 6 a.m. to attend the Nightingale-Bamford School. After graduating from Nightingale, von Ziegesar attended Colby College before spending a year in Budapest working for a local radio station.

Von Ziegesar returned to the United States to study creative writing at the University of Arizona, but dropped out shortly thereafter.

Back in New York, while working at book-packaging firm Alloy Entertainment, von Ziegesar became inspired to create the Gossip Girl series, which follows the lives of privileged teenagers in New York. The series climbed to the top of The New York Times best-sellers list in 2002. A spin-off series, The It Girl, made the list in 2005.

The Constance Billard School for Girls in Gossip Girl is based upon an exaggerated version of von Ziegesar's alma mater, Nightingale. She also culled events from the book from the lives of her extremely wealthy friends, as well as her own life as a perpetual gossip.

She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her family.

This series has been amusing for me, and this particular book was surprisingly sweet. Yes, all the kids are still smoking pot and cigarettes, sleeping around and getting drunk, but they are also worried about getting into college (or not getting in as the case may be). Also, Chuck with his monkey and Tiphany's ferret were really funny to me for some reason. Would I want my teenager reading these (well, if I was old enough to have a teen)? Probaby not. Do I want to read them myself? Absolutely! They are great when my mind is fried from working and I just want something light, fluffy and entertaining.

I refused to read these books when my peers were in to them (middle school...), and now that I've actually read one of them I am so very glad that I did not waste more time on them as an impressionable youngster.

So, it's supposed to be "teenagery" because there's lots of drugs and booze and sex? I guess... But I'm pretty sure glorifying all of these things for the young'uns is not what young adult novels (which people are reading in middle school) should be doing. Sheesh. I am so disappointed in the world.

My brain screamed "why are you doing this to me??", while my hands were turning page after page.
It took me one day to finish it.
It wasn't good.
But it was exactly what I needed.
God bless Cecily von Zigesar and her talent to brainwash readers.

The only thing I like about these books is Serens and that's because I know someone similiar to her (but not exactley like her.) Once again, predictable and and unrealistic. serena gets into all the colleges, Nate gets into all the colleges, Blair does not and is very pissed. They all visit respective schools. Everyone falls in love with Serena. Blair and Nate (finally) have sex. Jenny poses in a magazine for breast size. Dan is told his poems are songs. And some other boring stuff.

It started off at a good pace, with Vanessa starting her new movie, Blair, Serena and Nate going through the troubles of college. Dan being his emo self, trying to win V back while enjoying his college acceptance. Then Jenny, who is off trying to become a model. Then the book started to fall, about half way through.

Blair had acted not quite as I would have expected, moping around because of her wait listing into Yale. Serena, of course, gets accepted everywhere and now has to decide among Harvard, Yale, Brown and a host of other places, or if she wants to take a year off and try to act or model. She also picks up admirers at each place when she visits. Clearly, these books are more fantasy than reality for readers.

While I felt like von Ziegesar had lost what she had with the characters V and D. They seemed to of acted out of character with how they had been written before. Doing things I didn't feel quite comfortable seeing them do. Jenny was just running around wanting to be a model, while Nate and Serena seemed like the only characters to really stay in character. By the end, it seemed like V's movie had lost it's purpose and the characters had no where else to go. I'm glad to see that Nate and Blair finally take it to the next step, because that was getting pretty lame and well, a plot device spread too thinly.

ok, so I'm six books into this series now and have not really felt like writing a review until now. why now? oh who knows. I liked the first four books, as much as I can like fluff, but found the last two just too far fetched and to have incredibly ridiculous plot lines that its getting harder and harder to care for any if the characters. time sure seems to have slowed to a turtle pace in the novels so that one more ridiculous event after another can be added. I'm curious as to what will happen to them in the end so I'll continue reading even though the redundancy and continuous name dropping got old four books ago.

I feel like saying "Same as usual!" Because there isn't much in the way of character development. Jenny and Dan kind of get out on their own with some help, but everyone else stays the same. The off-and-on romance between B & N continue, and Serena's buffet of boys continues as well. They receive their college acceptance letters in this novel. Of course Blair has problems with where she gets accepted. Always drama.

My Thoughts: I very rarely read series, mostly because I’m impatient. I was tempted to read this one because I became addicted to the show (Penn Badgley 🥰) and thought it’d be something my students who are reluctant to read independently might pick up. I actually loved the first book, but that comes with a disclaimer that might have been tainted by how much I enjoyed the show. Unfortunately, as I continued reading 8 in total, they started to feel insufferable! I’m rating the series as a whole 3⭐️. I do love that YA series like these get teenagers reading, but as an adult they get irritating. I’m aware that might not be fair since they’re not written for me. Expect R-rated themes and language.

Okay, if you read the Gossip Girl books because you love the series, congratulations! You have just been utterly disappointed! Bet you never imagined Blair to always be cursing and arming herself with cigarettes, right? And the overuse of drugs and booze? I can dig the scandalous lives, but not the obsession with drugs and whatnots. I don't even consider this a book. It's just a collection of half-witty lines only made popular by the series. There's even no flow in the content! Just terrible.

2.5/5. I keep reading these books because It's hard for me not to finish the collection, but all the books kind of feel the same. They start fine, with a promising plot (promising as in this kind of books) but then they all end up the same. At least Nate and Blair finally had sex, the thing was becoming boring. Gonna finish the GG series, but for once, I actually prefer the TV Show.

I still enjoy parts of this series and they certainly are light , quick books but overall I'm getting a little bored with it all. It all sort of seems the same and the characters never really change or show any growth. I'll continue with the series but it's losing some of its appeal.

Same as before, but everyone is just getting sillier and sillier. Serena has no attention span, Blair and Nate keep getting back together and breaking up, Dan is blah and Vanessa was extremely out of character. Some of the college acceptance letter part were fun to read.
