Hmm, I’m starting to see a pattern of which of these books end up being more interesting than others. Basically if they end up just being about one race, or even jumping event, after another without any other extra plot in between (because, ya know, life) I find they tend to drag and be very repetitive while if they have extra conflicts outside of just racing (like books 2-4 and 6 had) they’re more engaging and interesting—just an interesting thing I’m noting as I reread them.
On that note, this book was okay though I did like how we’re doing some jumping along with the racing so at least we’re getting more variety of horse sports. I also like Samantha and Tor’s friendship growing into more as they are super sweet together, but it’s very light so far.
All in all not bad but not great either.

I have purchased books 1-30 plus some of the special books. These are amazing reads for young people and horse lovers. I never got to read many as a kid and now I have a hard time putting them down. I will be buying them all over time. This one was great, lots of action, lots of horse talk, and some surprises at the end. Great read.
I got this paperback soon after it was first published in 1993. I had mixed feelings about the series at the time. I did not like the transition to Samantha's point of view. And I didn't like the ending of Pride's Triple Crown campaign. I thought it was too unbelievable -- losing the Belmont by a nose? Come on!
Sometimes, the Thoroughbred books got eerily prophetic. Five years after this was published, Real Quiet had what looked like an insurmountable lead at the start of Belomnt's stretch. YES, I thought, I'D WAITIED 20 YEARS FOR THIS! Finally, another Triple Crown winner!
And then, another bay horse came barreling out of nowhere on the outside.
Real Quiet lost the Triple Crown by a nose.
I gave up on the series after Ashleigh's Christmas Miracle, sold my books, and went on with life. In a fit of what I can only describe as total insanity, I bought almost all of the series about two decades later.
In comparison to the rest of the series, this book really stands out for being focused, being kinda fun to read, and being more realistic about horse racing than usual. I'd also gotten to like Samantha more as the years went by ... and that she was so much better than those who followed her.
I am still bothered by a plot point raised in the last book that was ignored in this book -- Ashleigh said she was talking to a lawyer to get full ownership of Wonder and Pride. No lawyer talk here. However, having this twisted partnership made for good storytelling. Just compare it to the Wonder's Star books ... or even the Wonder's Champion books, where the Townsends mysteriously disappear.
Lavinia is introduced in this book. Samantha takes jumping lessons with Tor. I really liked this B plot, as I'd hoped the series would get away from racing.
Other horses in this book include Sadler's Station, Super Value, Top Hat, Sierra (I think this is where he's introduced), Indigo (who I think disappeared since), the un-PC named Russki, Jazzmn, Sadie, Fleet Goddess, and Sierra's sire, Maxwell. This is the book where Townsend Princess makes her grand entrance.
One other point to make -- book 53 Derby Fever, was mostly a rewriting of Samantha's Pride. This is because ghostwriter Mary Newhall Anderson had no imagination to come up with a book - length original plot. She does the revisionist history thing of stating the reverse of what really happened. In this book, it's clear that the Townsends forced Ashleigh to race Pride too much before the Kentucky Derby. In Mary Newhall Anderson's reinterpertation, she blames Ashleigh, too.

It's an awesome book all the way through!! You feel like you're Samantha, and feel worried for Pride and others, and want Brad Townsend to just keep his mouth shut!!
A great series for tweens that love horses and/or are interested in horseback riding or racing. Teaches about the struggles of working with animals and the benefits.
I remember that I had to get over a plot twist and that I liked this book and dat it was and dat it had amazing plot and dat I almost Pooped my pants because of the tension and dat you should read this book because it’s really good. No but seriously The tension did send me to the bathroom. I honestly this book had, plot Twist, suspense, Surprise, etc. The drama in this book was so so good I couldn’t believe it. I Really got to know the characters even more in this book. I felt like I was really there the whole time. The only thing is, I did not cry. Otherwise this book is perfect. So go and read it NOW!
