This story takes place 6 years after the first book and I am amazed at the evident growth and maturity of our main characters in this sequel. And like our MCs, the story also took a surprising shift as it opened up with Kieran's life during his graduation in Wizard's Hall. Unlike the first one, the sequel radiated with a dark undercurrent that just won't stop nagging at you. Many times I was brought to a complete pause while reading because my morality was subjected into question. My ideas of what should be right and wrong were being weighed as well in the countless moments the story danced the strategic play of chess in the war instigated by greed and power.
I just loved this!!! Every twist and turnabout allowed me to be pulled deeper into Kieran and Edouard's world as they not only tried to stop a rogue wizard from destroying the kingdom, but also quelled conflicts happening within, more specifically the questionable attachment between the two. And while the sexual tension was more palpable and pronounced between Kieran and Edouard in this spellbinding sequel, we only get a glimpse of their inevitable romance until the end. Which was I think a smart move by the author since it makes readers anticipate for it more in the third book. How exciting for us readers but unfortunate for the two because I'm sure the next installment will be dramatically taxing. But I can't wait!

What I really enjoy about the author's writing is her ability to develop relationships and characters. She doesn't need to constantly inject sex scenes (of which here there are almost none as well as in the first book) to show us passion. She shows it wonderfully in Edouward and Kieran's relationship through their actions and dialogue. It's actually really hot, the way they are so obviously in love with each other.

Enjoyable
This was an enjoyable addition...the plot was goid and I'm still liking all characters...Off to book 3... I'm interested to see how the relationships have developed ...

As a sequel this had as much going for it as the first book.
Meeting up with Kieran and Edouard again a few years down the track was wonderful. Although to be honest I was expecting a little more romance. While there is a very strong bond between the two, and we the reader can feel the love, its not actually addressed until the end.
The story of Imbario's escape and all that entailed after was as interesting as book one. The intrigue of who was supporting him kept me guessing.
The cast of solid characters did not disappoint. The climax ending had me eagerly reading. In fact through out the story I had strong opinions and thats always a plus for me.
Again my only gripe is lack of interaction with the Madrin. Although we do get to see Lord Colwyn finally succeed in meeting a Madrin of his own.

Set 6 years after the first book we get to see the boys all grown up and dealing with several major threats. The close relashionship between them is a backdrop for what is happening and though they reveal to have romantic feelings for each other the romance isn't the focus of the story. Their love simply exists, whether they consume the relationship or not (but fortunately they finally do take that step).
I absolutely love the madrin. They are a force of nature made magic. Colwyn might be the wisest wizard for recognizing how amazing they were.

Read it twice
Kerin is all grown up with an attitude and powers to match. I read this book and wonder at least twice. Who is ruling the kingdom? I have already read the other two books in this series. I hope there will be more to come.

The series gets better with each subsequent book - increased investment in the MCs as they grow up. The bad guys are not too nasty/malevolent and the M-M action is sufficiently 'fade to black' so that this series can be read by youth and YAs.
