Among the great masters of Surrealism, Max Ernst occupies a pre-eminent position. His stylistic evolution embraces an extraordinary and stimulating range of images - from the understated, mordant wit of 1920s Dada through the bewildering complexities of 1930s and early 1940s Surrealism. This development culminated in the last decades of the artist's life in a mysterious, compelling (and often slyly humorous) view of a unique universe of form, color, and line that is both alien and strangely familiar.This book offers a fresh and stimulating look at Max Ernst's oeuvre. It is illustrated with 176 color plates, in addition to numerous black-and-white reproductions. Here are his early Expressionist-influenced paintings, the matter-of-fact lunatic Dada works, and the magnificent, romantic Surrealist canvases that open windows into extraterrestrial worlds. Here, too, are a number of his distinctive sculptures with their subtly disquieting interplay of mass and volume. There is also work from the collage novels, which are pictorial (even cinematic) narratives assembled from 19th century engravings that titilate and horrify through their juxtaposition of banal and exotic motifs.

Pere Gimferrer (Barcelona, 1945). Poeta, prosista, traductor i crític literari. Estudia Dret i Filosofia i Lletres a la Universitat de Barcelona i molt aviat destaca com a poeta amb les seves primeres obres en castellà: Mensaje del tetrarca (1963), Arde el mar (1966, Premi Nacional de Poesia) i La muerte en Beverly Hills (1968). Amb Els miralls (1970) enceta la seva producció poètica en català. A aquesta obra la segueixen els títols Hora foscant (1972) i Foc cec (1973). Amb L'espai desert (1977) obté la Lletra d'Or del 1978. L'any 1981 aplega els títols anteriors a Mirall, espai, aparicions, on inclou l'obra Aparicions. Amb El vendaval (1988) guanya els premis Ciutat de Barcelona, Nacional de literatura i Crítica Serra d'Or. Encara en el terreny de la poesia, publica La llum (1990), Mascarada (1996), El Diamant dins l'aigua (2001), El castell de la puresa (2014) i Marinejant (2016). El 1985 és escollit Membre de la Real Academia Española i el 1989 li és concedida la Creu de Sant Jordi. És Membre de la Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (1998) i Membre numerari electe de la Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (2008). Com a crític col·labora en diverses publicacions i és autor d'una important obra assagística: La poesia de J.V. Foix (1974), Antoni Tàpies i l'esperit català (1974), Max Ernst o la dissolució de la identitat (1977), Miró, colpir sense nafrar (1978), Radicalidades (1978), Lecturas de Octavio Paz (1980), Los raros (1985) o Les arrels de Miró (1993). Ha traduït al castellà autors com Joan Brossa, Gabriel Ferrater, Ausiàs March o Mercè Rodoreda i, al català, Stendhal, Voltaire o Flaubert, entre d'altres.
