Noriaki Kubo, known professionally as Tite Kubo ( 久保帯人), is a Japanese manga artist and character designer. His manga series Bleach (2001–2016) had over 130 million copies in circulation as of 2022.
"Damn it... Damn it... Damn it... Why? How did this happen?! I wanted to protect you guys! So why...?! What... What...! What did I regain my powers for?!"
This is the most painful BLEACH volume I have ever read so far. It's not like I haven't seen it coming - I did, because I watched the anime - but, as usual, I wasn't prepared for it in the slightest. I thought that witnessing it in the manga version will be easier since there was no way for me to hear the sounds. But it wasn't any easier. In my head I had clearly heard Ichigo's broken voice and his scream of pain. I love Tite Kubo for creating BLEACH, it's my favorite anime, but I also hate him for putting my boy Ichigo through all the pain, confusion, manipulation and trauma especially in this volume.
The whole Fullbring arc is centering around Ichigo and his struggles. Because of his fight against Aizen, he had lost his powers and needed to live as a normal human for more than a year. You might think that it's no big deal. But for a person like Ichigo Kurosaki, who's whole being is build on his need to protect others, it's like loss of a soul. Loss of a limb. Loss of a life. He not only had lost his Soul Reaper powers, but also the ability to see ghosts. He didn't always have Soul Reaper powers, but he always saw ghosts. He thought of it as a curse sometimes, for sure, but if you suddenly lose something that you were used to, that you always had, it's extremely hard to keep on going forward.
I wanted to regain my power. But I couldn't figure out how. All I could do was bear it... For 17 months. Being helpless... I thought I finally found a way. Finally... I thought I could protect everybody with my power. But...
But he managed to do so. For 17 months he endured the loss and the pain, keeping a happy smile on his face despite hurting inside. Ginjou gave him hope. He dared to barge into his life and give him hope, and help him getting his powers back. Everything was supposed to be back to normal. Everything was supposed to be alright. But then Ginjou's real goal was revealed. He had shown his true face. Not only Ichigo's powers got brutally taken away from him, not only all the hope and happiness that he had felt, but also the ability to trust another person. He got betrayed in the worst possible way in the worst possible moment by the worst possible person. He lost EVERYONE he had cared for, because of Tsukishima's manipulations. It felt like all the blood, sweat and tears Ichigo had poured in the training, meant absolutely nothing. He did everything for the others, never for himself, and he got rewarded by not being called a hero, but with being called a bad guy instead.
"Chad... You guys are the same as the others...?" "I don't know what you mean by same. I'm actually confused because you're different. Ichigo, why are you doing this?" "Ichigo, did you forget everything Tsukishima's done for you...?"
Guys, he's only seventeen years old. He's still only a child. An adult would break down easily, how could a child react to all this?
"Give it back... Give it back, Ginjou... Give back my power..." "What are you talking about? You were only able to regain it because of me. So why shouldn't I have it?"
His eyes and his face expressions killed me in this volume. I HATE to see him in such a pain. No one should get through such a thing in such a little amount of time, especially not Ichigo Kurosaki - the boy that sacrificed everything for others. He was always the strong one. Even when he was losing the fight, even when he was terrified of his enemy, he stood proudly and gave his everything to win. He never backed down, no matter how many times he was on the death's door. To see a guy like this fall to his knees and burst into helpless tears, screaming his heart out in the feeling of pain and betrayal, is like agony for me. The amount of tears I have shared while reading this volume could easily become an ocean. I knew that the pain wouldn't last forever, because I knew how this arc will end, but it didn't matter. My favorite boy was hurting so I was hurting with him.
"No... Not you guys too..."
The ending of this volume doesn't make everything better, but the events of the next volume certainly will, so I'm shaking away every negative emotions I have felt until now, I'm shaking away every drop of tears that are still falling, to prepare myself for one of the best moments of BLEACH. I know that I will scream and jump around in joy very, very soon, but I wish I could say that all the hurt and pain was worth it. To be honest, if I could shield Ichigo from the events of the Fullbring arc, I would. Without question. If I could take away all the negative emotions he had went through, all the pain and trauma, I would. But it's impossible, what already happened, happened and nothing can change that. It would make Ichigo stronger, for sure. But I still wish that he didn't need to get through all of this :(
Some things I need to talk about: (be aware of the spoilers, please)
~ "Stop whining. Why don't you do one more set to match your name?" "I know you didn't just say that! I hate those kind of puns!" "Liar. I know you wear a t-shirt that says 15 on it." - I hate myself for feeling sorry that Ichigo lost such a good friend like Ginjou. I liked Ginjou before the cut, I really did. He was a great guy and it seemed like he genuinely cared about Ichigo. They could've had a really fun and strong relationship, but all was lost in such a short amount of time. ~ The moment when Ichigo came back home after an insanely intense and tiring training just to see Tsukishima in his household and everyone acting like he was always a part of their life... insane. ~ Ichigo's desperation to leave his own house and run away as far as possible - feeling threatened and in danger in his house that should be the safest possible place - hurt me immensely and I hate both Tsukishima and Ginjou for putting him through this. ~ Why none of Ichigo's friends and family members didn't think that something is wrong? No one, absolutely no one gave Ichigo the benefit of the doubt. Everyone immediately assumed that he's in the wrong, that he's the crazy one. I understand that their memories got manipulated by the Book of the end, but for me it doesn't entirely justify their behaviour. They should've trusted Ichigo, but they trusted Tsukishima instead. ~ WHY DID CHAD ATTACK ICHIGO?! His memories were also manipulated, I understand that, but why the hell did he decide to straight up launch a punch towards his best friend instead of, I don't know, talk things out?! Didn't Ichigo and him promise that they will always fight in each other's name?! And seriously f Orihime and her sad freaking faces. Isn't Ichigo the love of your life?! ~ I really love Ikumi (Ichigo's boss) for welcoming Ichigo with open arms and giving him the safe space and comfort he needed. She's the best. ~ The worst pain of all is the fact that all the events brought Ichigo to the point of thinking about killing another person (Tsukishima). This is the guy who didn't kill even the worst enemy, the guy that always had excuses for the bad guys' behaviour, the guy who always fought fair and square, no matter if he was in disadvantage or not :( ~ "Your Fullbring is mine." - Ichigo's face while watching Ginjou's triumph over him :( :( :( I can't imagine the amount of hurt and betrayal he had to feel back then. ~ "He's crying. Poor thing." "Let him cry. He's useless to us now." - the hypocrisy of Tsukishima and Ginjou two is truly another level. You two are awful people. Awful, awful people. I would've put both in hell without any thought (but I know that they didn't land there, sadly). ~ The way the rain had mixed with Ichigo's tears when he saw Urahara and Isshin? Help :(
Such an intense volume. Tsukishima has everybody under the control of his Fullbring and now everyone thinks Ichigo is crazy. We also learned the truth about Ginjo and Tsukishima and what they were after. Not to mention, we know what Urahara and Ichigo’s dad was up to and now Ichigo is really back!
Lots of intrigue and deception going on in Bleach, Volume 52: End of Bond. As I suspected, Tsukishima's powers have turned Ichigo's world upside down with chaos and confusion. It was really heartbreaking to see Ichigo cope with feeling betrayed.
I didn't have long to feel angry or sad because the little treat at the end made me jump for joy! Woohoo! Can't wait to read the next volume!!
I was on the verge of thoroughly hating this one. Mangaka Tite Kubo was giving Ichigo one of the most annoying and uncharacteristic developments in this franchise so far and it felt like he had completely forgotten how much he's matured throughout the Arrancar story arc.
And then the plot twists came in like a hurricane. It sort of changed the game a lot.
It still remains that this new lore material still feels a bit out of place. I look forward to finding out how mangaka Tite Kubo will make everything fit together in the end.
Omg this volume was chilling. All of Ichigo’s friends having their pasts altered? Absolutely insane and perfectly drives Ichigo forward. Also OMG THE END OF THIS VOLUME WAS INSAAAANE
The continuation of me finding random manga books at the library. But, it did remind me of how fun Bleach is to read and definitely will continue. Also, Rukia is #bestgirl
پ.ن:چرا گینجو؟؟؟؟؟چرا؟؟؟؟؟؟؟
One of my favourite volumes. The entire sequence at the end is just 10/10, one of my favourite Ichigo moments its played out to perfection. Its genuinely poetic the way it plays back to volume 1. One of my favourite Rukia moments too. "No...not you guys too..." "You idiot, look at who's actually holding that sword." This arc really reminds me of dark knight rises, the way see Ichigo lose everything, on his knees in the pouring rain crying desperately...
I rate this 3.5 stars. I really wanted to rate this 4 stars because of the last chapter but the previous chapters in this volume annoyed me because while in many cases I like the friends-being-manipulated-into-becoming-the-main-character's-enemies trope, I don't know why but it just annoyed me here. Although I do find Tsukishima's fullbring interesting and unique.
I swear I don't know how to rate this, because I absolutely hated it for most of the volume. It felt like a nasty fever dream that I just wanted to end.
But then the very, very end of the volume happened, and it's either a trick, or I'm going to be incredibly relieved once I read the next volume. I'm just so done with Fullbring and all of these jerks who are manipulating Ichigo.
I've never written a review for something on here before, but this warranted it. That was the most intense volume of Bleach I've ever read. I don't think a Manga has ever made me physically afraid of something, but this terrified me.
Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.
Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56- Rating: 7/10 (The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes) - A fun introduction. -An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows) -Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on. -It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.
Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10 -The height of Bleach -Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff. -The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc. -The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism. -Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.
Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10 -This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10. -The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies. -Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach. -However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool. -This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.
The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10 -A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad. -When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it. -That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.
The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10 -And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing. -That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections. -Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty. -There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming. -Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights. -It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.
This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.
4/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)
Ichigo Kurosaki is a high school student who can see ghosts. When an evil spirit, called a hollow, attacks his family, he meets Rukia, a soul reaper tasked with fighting against hollows. But when Rukia is injured, Ichigo must make the decision to take over the role of soul reaper to help fight against hollows to save his hometown.
Bleach is a classic manga and one of the more popular options for those starting out in the genre/format. It features themes of friendship, growing up and changing, and never giving up. One of the most enjoyable elements of this series is watching the progression as the characters learn and evolve. Ichigo has a tendency to be really cocky, especially at the start of the series, but as time goes on and he learns more about the world he’s in, he changes and becomes more willing to listen to the advice given to him by other characters. His friends also continue to grow and progress along with him. Additionally, there is a change in the art style of the characters as the story progresses, which makes it easy to see how they have changed as they all get older. There were two elements about this series that I disliked. The first was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed, and there were some things that I was a bit confused about. However, I recognize that the author was sick and so that attributed to the way things ended. The other element that I disliked was the sheer number of characters in the series by the end. Many of the characters that I thought were dead or gone ended up coming back, and I had to try and remember who they all were. I definitely think I needed to make myself a character sheet with information about each character to help me remember everyone in the end. In terms of assessing age appropriateness for this series, I would say that it’s an okay series for middle school and up. A couple of considerations to keep in mind when deciding if it’s right for you: 1. There is some violence (which is common for shonen mangas), including some elements of body horror, but it’s not too bad. 2. There is no sexual content, although many of the women are drawn disproportionately (which is common in manga written by men). 3. The main character is fifteen years old at the start of the series and only gets older as it progresses. And 4. The themes are a bit mature in that they require some deeper level thinking in order to fully understand them all. Overall, I enjoyed this series for its interesting premise, and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the traditional shonen manga.
Ichigo finds himself blinded by Ginjo during their battle. When Orihime attempts to heal him, she is locked into a cage from which her voice cannot be heard. But Ichigo battles on, only to discover Ginjo’s reason was to help him achieve his complete Fullbring. Afterward, an exhausted Ichigo wants nothing more than to go home. But when he gets there, he’s in for a rude shock when Yuzu tells him they have a visitor, their cousin… Tsukishima? Wth?
When Ichigo attacks Tsukishima, Karin and Yuzu are appalled at their brother’s lack of manners. What can he be thinking, to try to hurt their lovely cousin? And why are Keigo and the others here? The situation grows worse when Tsukishima calls Orihime and Chad to join them! Everyone is convinced that Tsukishima is their friend, such a great guy. Confused and upset, Ichigo escapes. He lucks out and runs into his boss on the street and she takes him home. Finally, someone who’s on his side. Or is she? Oh no, she’s called Tsukishima too! Making a hasty exit, Ichigo goes to the Fullbring hideout, only to learn that the others, aside from Ginjo, have all been taken by Tsukishima!
Ginjo takes Ichigo to another secret hideout, but Yukio finds them anyway, and they end up following him to a large house… where everyone is waiting to welcome Ichigo back and forgive him for his bad behavior! It’s like a nightmare he can’t wake from! How can he protect his friends and family if they think he’s in the wrong and Tsukishima is such a great guy?
Ichigo attempts to battle Tsukishima, but it’s difficult when everyone else keeps getting in the way, attempting to run interference. To his dismay, Ginjo steps between them only to be cut by Tsukishima’s sword. Will he become buddy buddies with the enemy now too? When Uryu arrives, Ichigo doesn’t know if he’s siding with the others or not. But in one move, he now realizes who his enemy really is.
Poor Ichigo has it hard in this volume of Bleach. His friends and family think he’s acting badly and he can’t make them see that it’s Tsukishima who’s the enemy, not him. Kiskue and Isshin seem to be up to something, not sure what. Guess we’ll find out in time. I was right not to trust those Fullbrings! Can’t wait for the next volume!
Bleach, Vol. 52 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (451–459) of the on-going manga series.
Ichigo Kurosaki fully manifests his Fullbring during his match against Kūgo Ginjō, noticing that something is off with his opponent. After Ichigo puts the finishing touches on his complete Fullbring, Ginjō tells him to go home to see his sisters. Not long after that, Ichigo discovers that Shūkurō Tsukishima had inserted his presence in the past of all of his family and friends.
After learning that even the other members of Xcution have been affected by Tsukishima, Ichigo and Ginjō confront him at his mansion. However, while dealing with both Yasutora "Chad" Sado and Orihime Inoue as they are under Tsukishima's spell, Ichigo witnesses Ginjō being stabbed. Though it seemed Ginjō is unaffected, Uryū Ishida reveals that Ginjō is the man who attacked him.
Before Ichigo can react, Ginjō strikes him down and siphons his Fullbring. Explaining that Tsukishima only restored his memory and those of their fellow Fullbringers, Ginjō reveals that they had arranged the recent events as part of a scheme to take Ichigo's Fullbring. Soon after, a distraught Ichigo is stabbed from behind by Rukia Kuchiki and is transformed into Soul Reaper.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The true colors of the Xcution are brought to light as Shūkurō Tsukishima, the so called enemy, restored the memories of the group. Apparently, they wanted the Fullbring powers of Ichigo Kurosaki as it is a powerful thing to use and keep. Fortunately, Rukia Kuchiki was able to restore his Soul Reaper powers by stabbing him in the back – much like how he first inherited his powers.
All in all, Bleach, Vol. 52 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
VOLUME 52: CHAPTER 451-459 Arc 10: The Lost Substitute Shinigami

In despair, a sword piercef through Ichigo's chest from the back. Urahara and Isshin arrived along with Rukia who pierced the sword. Ichigo got his Shinigami powers back.
This was a great volume as we see Ichigo attain his fullbring form and then Tsukishima attacks, his power is that he can insert himself in anyone's past by cutting into them and then they fight as he has made all his friends and family believe he is their ally and so they have turned against Ichigo and they fight and its epic and then comes the battle when Ginjou and Ichigo have to fight Tsukishima and they do but the former is pierced, then Ishida comes in and then the reality is revealed when Ginjou comes out as the real villain and as he wanted Ichigo's fullbring Shinigami powers and wow what a twist! But someone comes to save Ichigo too! Its an epic twist and ike makes a villain out of a retcon machine and the way its done is perfect and the motives and all line up correctly, its a serious threat to Ichigo! Props to Kubo for making such an interesting villain!
