One of the world's top bridge players chronicles his career from his early days growing up in the UK to his position today as one of the world's best. Rosenberg and the flamboyant Zia Mahmood, who also now lives in the US, are one of the world's best partnerships. Here we learn how they first met and started playing together. There are fascinating and funny anecdotes from Rosenberg's own career, his all-time favorite hands, and tips and ideas that will help the reader improve his own game. Finally, the author discusses some of the thorny ethical issues that plague today's tournament scene, and offers his own ideas on how to solve them.
Written by the famous player Michael Rosenberg, he has shared many interesting hands and how he thought on playing it, which I can truly feel why he is considered "the game's greatest technician". He also humbly shared the hands that he made mistakes on, not only those that he performed well. Also of course he did share his stories with Zia Mahmood who is also definitely another bridge legendary. A nice expert sharing.
Read 2 (2023): 3* I appreciated his discussion on ethics a bit more this time. Last hand was fun and interesting. Hamman is the man. Not as bad as I thought the first time, but still p difficult to get through. His "interesting hands" are diabolical and feel like a bit of a flex but also just might be who he is and "how wacky his brain is." Still nothing anyone would ever solve at the table. Cool enough to see how his mind works. Still 3* for me. Prob not gonna read this one again.
Read 1 (2021): 3* This one was tricky to get through. I liked the beginning until his super tricky problems and then 20 pages of ranting about ethics w/o any clear solutions. But fun stuff abt not pulling trumps even when right to, cheeky shit like grosvenors, leading opps suit to bamboozle them, and lots of other fun stuff. tricky hands, lots of underruffing and transportation v tricky q's. 3 stars: hard to get thru, too tricky 4 me RN, but some v interesting stuff on bridge education for me rn EF project teaching approach
