The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library

On Beyond Bugs (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library) by Tish Rabe

Rate this book
"They live in water, the earth and the sky. Just wait... and you'll soon see an insect go by!" With these words Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat sets out to take young readers on a fascinating tour of the insect world - a world teeming with six legged critters from moths to fleas and fireflies. This title forms part of a series of books that takes an off-beat look at natural history through a fun combination of Seussian rhymes and zany illustrations. Aimed at early readers - from four to seven year olds - the books are designed to bridge the gap between concept books written for preschoolers and more formal non fiction titles that require fluent reading skills. By presenting the facts in a lively and rhythmic manner, they provide the critical foundation upon which complex facts and ideas can eventually be built.

'They live in water, the earth and the sky. Just wait… and you’ll soon see an insect go by!' And it is with these words that The Cat in the Hat sets out to take Dick and Jane, and young readers, on a of the insect world – a world teeming with six legged critters from moths to fleas and fireflies. Spiders are not included because as the Cat points out, 'Spiders aren't insects!/This news couldn't wait!/Instead of six legs,/every spider has eight!'

It is indeed a fascinating tour, and a learning tour, first meeting the swimming diving beetle, the jumping dog flea, the crawling caterpillar, the chirping cricket, the flashing firefly and the buzzing bee. Then we encounter wasps, underwing moths and the froghopper, all of which have their own method of defence against predators. The skink and the ladybird are also equipped, by the smell they emit, of putting off attackers.

We learn that ants can lift 10 times their own weight and the Cat demonstrates by making Jane as strong as an ant so that she is able to hold up 10 Cats in the Hat! The Queen Bee and her attendants are examined and it is pointed out that fleas, flies and mosquitos are pests with it being only the female of the latter species that bites - I didn't know that!

Caterpillars are different in that they change when they get older as after a few weeks they become butterflies. Incidentally only the other day I saw a caterpillar for the first time for many a long year and then yesterday I encountered two more!

The Cat ends by telling us that the world can't go on without all these insects and 'The world that we know couldn't go on without them.

There's no doubt that The Cat in the Hat Learning Library is an excellent vehicle to teach us all sorts of things.

On Beyond Bugs (Cat In The Hat's Learning Library) by Tish Rabe On Beyond Bugs by Tish Rabe was a fairly good source of information. The Cat in the Hat tells the reader (and the girl and boy from the original story, though they're more literary devices than characters) about bugs in general, while Thing 1 and Thing 2 have a speech bubble on each page and/or there are just some facts about a specific insect. As the book goes on, it gets into the specifics of insect protection and lifestyles with specific insects.

So if you were as strong
As an ant, you would see
you could lift up ten cats
in tall hats - easily!

I like the comparisons the speaker makes between insects and the reader. These connections make sense and are fun to have children think about.

I really like that this makes insect facts approachable to children in a way that's not just facts and that's somewhat familiar to most students. It would work well for the younger grades, especially if Dr. Seuss books are in different locations around the classroom.

In terms of a Dr. Seuss remake, though, the rhymes are quite clunky. They don't flow well or at all. I would definitely use this to teach science, not poetry. On the other hand, some of the rhymes are about as well done as average third grade writing, so maybe it could be used as a mentor text for some nonfiction writing.

I think I'll add this one to my future classroom wish list, it's pretty good.

"On Beyond Bugs! All About Insects" by Tish Rabe is a non-fiction book written for primary readers. Written in a typical "Dr. Seuss" style, this book teaches loads of interesting facts about insects. I loved it and am sure that it would appeal to boys and girls of all ages! The easy rhythm and silly rhymes carry the reader along at a fun-filled pace, while at the same time instilling essential knowledge about the world around us. As you read, you can almost hear the voice of the much-loved "Cat in the Hat!"

The illustrations by Aristides Ruiz are colorful, imaginative, and beautifully drawn. They add a wonderful dimension to the text and make learning delightful! Many of the illustrations include diagrams, labels, and close-ups, which serve to clarify what the author is communicating. There is even a helpful glossary to define unfamiliar words.

This would be a wonderful resource for elementary teachers as they introduce a science unit on insects. I am sure that it would help children make connections with their own experiences with bugs, set a purpose for reading, and create excitement about learning! I love the book and gave it a 5-star rating. As a matter of fact, I am planning on buying some other books from "The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library" for my grandchildren!

I did not like this book because I do not like bugs. I also did not like this book because this book had a lot of bugs in it.

This is a top book for teaching about insects. It shows great visuals over what each insect looks like. Also it shows the anatomy of an insect. It goes over what you may think is an insect but is not. For example, a spider is not an insect. It also goes over different attributes bugs may have. This can be seen when it talks about ants being very strong. Overall, I would love to use this book in my classroom.

We are pleased to hear you've read "On Beyond Bugs" by Tish Rabe. The book teaches us the importance of the smaller creatures on our planet, showing that every being has a role in the ecosystem.

You've learned that even tiny insects have important jobs in nature, helping plants grow and balancing the environment.

Well done, my little explorer!

Tish (who changes to wish or fish depending on what my spell checker feels) returns with another book from the Cat in the Hat readers library and this time the bugs about and about. A good series of learning about natural history.

This was too long for the 3-year-old room, but a good rhyming book about bugs for kindergarten probably.

( 6yo)

It's about insects. There are bumblebees, crickets and fireflies. I learned that insects have feelers that feel what's around them. Spiders are not insects because they have eight legs.

I absolutely love this science themed series. It’s the perfect introduction series for children younger than the Magic School Bus age range. So glad to have discovered this series.

This book could be read during the explain portion of a 5E lesson about insects. There is a glossary of terms that could be used for evaluation by having the terms on note cards, and the definition on another note card. The students would then need to match the term with the definition. I would read this book with 1st-3rd grade.

This book can be used for counting because many of the pages have pictures with numerous bugs on it, such as one page has 30+ honey bees on it. Students could how many of certain bugs from the book there are in it. This could be done after reading the book to use as an assessment of whether the student understands what that bug is. For example, if they know what a honeybee is, then they will not have any problem counting the honeybees. The teacher could do this without the words on the page, if that is necesary to keep the students from looking at the word.
