Erich von Arendt's dream came true when he married Johanna Kammler, but when Johanna feels trapped in their arranged marriage, Erich fights to keep them together despite being separated by war and lies.
This is a truly enjoyable Christian historical fiction novel set in Germany during WW II. An arranged marriage, betrayal, moral dilemmas, and a growing faith all made this a page turner for me. I wish it was the first book in a series; I would love to read more about Joanna and Erich!
This book looked like it would be really good. And it was -- in a way. I really had problems with the dialog. There were about three main subjects that everyone discussed every time they met. It was redundant. The cover art is rather fetching, but I thought that the picture of Erich on the front was really not what he was supposed to look like. One plus of this book was that you can read it and feel safe that you're not going to run into mature material. That was appreciated. To sum this up: It's a good, clean read, but not very creative.
Not one of my favorite books, this story, nevertheless, describes what life was like for some of Hitler's insiders. It's a bit like LDS fiction -- too predictable, yet I believe it was the experience of a lot of wealthy, non-Jewish Germans.
