Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.

As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.

In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.

Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.

Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.

As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.

Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.

Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.

Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.

Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God

A great helpful book on praying and deepening your relationship with God.

“God wants to meet your deepest needs. He wants you to see, know, taste, and experience him in ways that shake you to your core. He longs for you far more than you long for him. He stands ready to reveal himself, enfold you in love, speak to you with power, and touch you with Grace. He has waited for you-for this moment. Are you ready?” David Jeremiah

“ How are we to pray? What kind of attitude or we to bow our heads? With what kind of expectation? With what strength of hope? How much depends on us, and how much depends on God?”

What subject was Jesus concerned with teaching? What subject were the disciples most interested in learning? Worship leading? Preaching? No! It was prayer!

I picked this book up because David Jeremiah is my father's favorite preacher. I've not heard very many of his sermons, though I would definitely be interested to. I have collected several of Jeremiah's books, this being the first one now read.

I realized that I needed instruction on praying. I felt as though I held nothing but a checklist that I would run through nightly - the last activity before sleeping.

What an eye-opener this book was! It is a wonderful resource! One could build a sizable library from the indexes. David Jeremiah is a very succinct writer, whose prose is very enjoyable. He is a man who enthusiastically relishes the depths of his subjects. I hungrily ate and digested every sentence of every page.

Within Jeremiah gives us an outline for prayer. It is based upon the Lord's prayer. Sprinkled throughout the book are varied anecdotes of prayers answered as well as excerpts from Jeremiah's own prayer journal. The anecdotes struck me in such a way that to date I have retold them to several people.

The latter part of the book takes an in depth look at John 17. Many have been fascinated with the chapter which allows readers to "listen in on Heaven's conversation". There is so much here to glean understanding from. Jeremiah casually takes on such theological topics as Calvinism and Arminianism, drawing upon the differences within the ways each doctrine prays. He constantly quotes scriptural truths from men such as Tertullian, Augustine, Calvin, Oswald Chambers, Andrew Murray, John Piper, John MacArthur, Bill Hybels - the list goes on and on.

The last chapter calls for us to be journalists. I've certainly no problem with that. Jeremiah wishes us to write out our prayers, our thoughts, our concerns, our lives. He quotes Socrates - "the unexamined life is not worth living". He speaks of "harvesting" from journals. I'm definitely picking up Gordon MacDonald's book on journal-keeping, which Jeremiah draws heavily from; also of note Ronald Klug and Steven Covey's books on journaling. It is no wonder at all the reason it is that David Jeremiah is a superb writer.

It's hard to find a good book on prayer these days. Jeremiah wrote a gem, and this causes you to dig deep into and examine how your own prayer life is doing. It did that for me. It's a moving book that is not filled with mechanical how-to's, but gave me a vision for prayer and how I can take it to the next level. Jeremiah goes into detail, line by line, about the Lord's prayer. Powerful. Then he examines Jesus' prayer in John 17 and opens that up. In the end, he explains how we can start a journal that gives us a history of God at work in our lives. It's a book on prayer, but so much deeper. I started it over the day I finished it. There is so much I need to absorb and apply to my life.

Have read quite a number of books on prayer. The author acknowledges that are many books about prayer. Some, he pens "seem to be little more than guilt ridden tirades"
Well he doesn't go with the guilt trip approach at all.
There are very helpful reflections on 'The Lord's Prayer' and what is recorded of Jesus actually praying in John 17. Some good insights.
Some of the book felt a bit culturally bound and at least one person quoted, is probably not a preacher many would want to quote anymore.
The biggest renewed challenge for me was expectation with prayer, so not just reading about it but being active in prayer each day. Kind of obvious I guess but a good stirring nevertheless! Be that in thanks and worship, confession, stillness, intercession for others...
There is a useful chapter towards the end on the worth of journalling.
Would have valued there being some more about the struggles people can have with prayer, especially when it seems like God is silent or disappeared. Well, a book can't cover everything and hey, Pete Greg's excellent book 'God on Mute' and the online 24-7 courses on prayer are a great help on this.

This book helped me reexamine some things in my life, and helped cement the idea that when we’re operating inside of God’s will for our life “who can be against us”?Jesus was on a mission when He was on earth, and absolutely nothing was going to get in His way of accomplishing what He came here to do. Hearing that really motivated and encouraged me.

This book has changed my life!

Reading this jump started something amazing. It helped me deepen my relationship with God through prayer and it is transformative. Prayer has improved, I’m seeing prayers answered, my worship has gotten richer, and I’m looking forward to deepening my knowledge of the Word.

Thankful to David Jeremiah for writing this.

So much encouragement

Dr Jeremiah has renewed my desire to begin journaling again. I had been journaling for more than 30 years when I had a major surgery a few years ago and my life changed and I allowed it to interrupt that time of journaling. I look forward to starting once again. Thank you Dr Jeremiah.

Dr. Jeremiah gives us ab excellent expose on prayer using the Lord's prayer and the one Jesus spoke from His heart in John 17.
He dissects these prayers phrase by phrase and explains Jesus' meaning and how to pray effective prayers. Dr. Jeremiah also has some additional suggestions about journaling and how/why it helps dissolve spiritual "dry" places.

The book did not offer new and exciting revelations or prayer adventures. Perhaps I expected something different. It seemed that David Jeremiah wrote this to share his own personal cancer trial.

Outstanding writing on Jesus’ prayers and how to apply them to our own prayer life and spiritual growth. I couldn’t help but take pages of notes, and I think you will want to do the same.

I bought this sometime in October 2011. During that time, I was just starting my journey as a Christian, and since I have always believed in the power of prayer, I bought this book to help me cultivate and improve my prayer life. I don't know why it took me so long before I decided to finish this book but I believe that I've read this book just right in time.

Like what I've said earlier, I've always known that God answers prayer and prayer changes things but admittedly, wrestling in prayer and spending more time in it is still one of the hardest things for me. Yes, I do read my Bible everyday and I do keep a spiritual journal, like what the author has mentioned in this book, but prevailing and persevering in prayer is really a chore for me. Praise God that this book has somehow encouraged me to pray more.

If there's something new that I've learned from this book, it's the importance of praying according to the pattern that Jesus has taught us in the Bible. I also learned the importance of looking back and reviewing my journal to see the wonderful works that the Lord has done through answering my prayer.

I love this book. David Jeremiah starts off his book writing about prayer. Then, he writes several chapters on the different phrases of the Lord's Prayer. I particulary like the chapter that refers to "Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed by thy name". I like where he talks about eight different Hebrew names for God. He then writes about the prayer that Jesus prayed for his disciples and for us (believers) in John 17. He then writes about how to keep a journal. This book is such a wonderful book that I would recommend it to everyone.

I discovered David Jeremiah through Family Life Radio and was daily absorbed in his preaching. He has such a blessed style of relating Bible stories to our everyday life.
This books breaks out the Lord's Prayer and really had me wanting to know more and what this prayer is really about. My favorite chapter so far is about forgiveness - something I'm not very good at . . . I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book at the Billy Graham library in North Carolina when we visited there. I like reading books on prayer to improve my own prayer life. This book did not offer anything new that I did not already know about prayer and therefore I did not finish reading it.
