Jenna Townley believes she is heir to her father's colliery fortune until she finds out she has a half brother and sister. The story goes on about her fight to be part of running and her claim to he coal mines even though her half brother has been set up to follow in his father's footsteps. I didn't like the main character " Jenna" at all. She just seems a self centered, spoiled bitch. I've read many of Audrey Howards novels and loved them but this one was just boring and annoying between the repetitiveness and the over describing of clothing articles etc.

This book follows the lives of Jonas and Nella's children, particularly Jenna, who I found to be a lovely yet exasperating character. The central theme of the book is Jenna's struggle to take control of her family's collieries, despite being a woman at a time when only men were involved in business. The feminist side of me was so annoyed at the state of the law and the restrictions imposed upon females back then. On the other hand, I found it difficult to accept that Jenna would have been allowed as much independence as she had, given the times. She was written a little too modernly to fit the story, and yet her independent spirit was the main reason I liked her.
