Charlie Joe Jackson #2

Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit

Rate this book
Charlie Joe Jackson, the most reluctant reader ever born, made it his mission in the first book to get through middle school without reading a single book from cover to cover. Now he's back, and trying desperately to get straight A's in order to avoid going to academic camp for the summer. In order to do this, he will have to betray his friend, lose the girl of his dreams, and end up acting in a school play about the inventor of paper towels. Charlie Joe's not exactly the "school play kind of guy", but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Charlie Joe is at it again in Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit and Tommy Greenwald has got a genuine series on his hands. I'm looking forward to reading Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Summer Vacation, about which Tommy Greenwald's site says "All I can tell you right now is that this book will be just as hilarious as the first two books..." In response to this, I must ask just how hilarious did Mr. Greenwald find his own books to be:)

I kid, I kid. I found the first Charlie Joe Jackson adventure to be hilarious and his second is even funnier. There's depth to both of Mr. Greenwald's books, but more important than lessons learned or "true meanings" and other such garbage English teachers long to read essays about, the Charlie Joe Jackson books are good time reads. If you pick up a Charlie Joe Jackson book, you know what you're going to get: a sarcastic tale of adolescent angst that will be fast and fun to read, and that's important.

There likely won't ever be a Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to the Meaninglessness of Life or Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Dealing with Your Friend's Death After She Fell off the Special Bridge You Used to Create Fantasy Worlds Together. This ain't that kind of party pal, and Tommy Greenwald's readers know it ain't that kind of party.

If I had to guess, I'd say Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Summer Vacation will involve Charlie Joe in a predicament caused by his own avarice, be composed of short, breezy chapters, many of which will be only one page to make the reading faster for reluctant readers (Greenwald's bread and butter), and it will feature hilarious 1-page "tips" from Charlie Joe himself. The style will be uniform to the first two books because Tommy Greenwald has established a precedent and made an implicit promise to his reader of a brand. There will be return readers because they know what they're going to get and they now know they can trust Tommy Greenwald to deliver the goods. Assuming Mr. Greenwald is amused rather than offended by that crack I made regarding how much he enjoys his own books and sends me another free copy, I'll be a return reader as well:)

If you haven't read either of Charlie Joe Jackson's tales thus far (stop reading and head to an independent bookstore, or, amazon if you don't have time to make a stand for social change in your consuming), here's a taste of what your going to get:
Reading and schoolwork are the backbone of every child’s education.
It’s extremely important to study hard, and respect your teachers. The best way to make sure you get good grades is to do your work on time, and take great care and pride in everything you do. Try not to rely on extra credit if you don’t have to, because it can turn out to be a very difficult process.
So, that’s my first tip.
Or at least, it would be if we were living in fantasy land.
But we’re living in real life, so ignore everything I just said.
All of our favorite characters from Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Not Reading are back for round 2, including Eliza, the "it" girl who has a crush on Charlie, and Hannah, the girl Charlie fancies, and could it be that she's starting to fancy him? I'll never tell, but one of my favorite things about reading a sequel is so often it's a visit from old friends. There are some new characters as well and ole Hannah may just have some competition in the field of being crushed on by Charlie Joe Jackson. But of all of the lovely ladies in Charlie's life, my favorite of Greenwald's descriptions goes to Eliza:

Everyone cheered.
Eliza was used to people cheering in her presence, so she ignored it.

Just as in the first book, it amuses me that Charlie Joe has so little interest in books, yet he genuinely cares about his grades:
…but going home to a lousy report card was kind of like going to a scary movie with your friends even though you hate scary movies. There was no way out.
Charlie Joe is often a walking contradiction, it's true, but this time out Greenwald raises the stakes. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson are so dismayed by Charlie Joe's report card they threaten to make him spend his summer at Nerd Camp, and not the good Elissa Brent Weissman kind. Charlie Joe would rather spend time with his friends and romantic entanglements. I'd love to read a Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Dating, but unless Charlie Joe starts aging a little faster each book, that's probably never going to happen.

Charlie strikes an agreement with his father: if he can get all 'A's and one 'B' on his next report card, he doesn't have to go to camp smarty pants. But as Charlie's buddy, Katie (who I think also has a thing for Charlie Joe, middle grade player) puts it:

"You're a really smart kid, but you hate to read and you hate to study. Your homework is always late and always lazy. And even in the easy classes you find a way to get on the teachers' nerves all the time. So what do you expect? I'm not sure why four days out of the year you suddenly get all guilty and upset about it. It's who you are."
And so begins Charlie Joe Jackson's quest for extra credit, which leads to a series of hilarious episodes in which Charlie Joe acts in the school play, joins the Student Goverment Council, and my personal favorite, poses as Byron Chillingsworth, famous boy foxhunter, for his art teacher:
Changing in the bathroom was an adventure. I could barely get the green shorts on, they were so tight. There was also a white shirt, a red vest, a checkered jacket that was way too small, and a hat that looked like Peter Pan’s.
I looked in the mirror. I laughed, until I remembered it was me. Then I kind of cried a little inside.

Like Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Not Reading, Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit is a fun and very funny read for all ages. It comes highly recommended from me and I'm looking forward to Charlie Joe Jackson's future guides. And now I'll leave you with some of my favorite passages from Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit:

I took a big swig of chocolate milk and immediately felt better. Chocolate milk is like that.

Katie bought herself a bag of carrot sticks, which are like potato chips without the goodness.

My dad shook his head. “Charlie Joe, this is NO GOOD.” (The capital letters mean he said it loud enough to make the dogs go into another room.)

I could swear Mr. Twipple had tears in his eyes. “This is the late John Gielgud,” he said, “one of the greatest Shakespearean actors ever to grace the stage.”
We watched some more.

“And, when I listen to Sir John, I remember why I got into this business.”
It didn’t seem like a great idea to point out that one the worlds’ greatest actors ever and a middle school Drama teacher weren’t necessarily in the same business.

This book was quite the book! I can’t believe Charlie Joe’s improvement in grades. But, just that one C+! If I got all A grades, one B grade, and one C grade, I would be killing myself! The way for Charlie Joe to get out of going to Camp Rituhbukkee (pronounced read-a-bookie) is by getting all A grades and one B but, he just has to blow it in Drama and get a C+! At least his parents allowed him to not attend Camp Rituhbukkee. But, he felt guilty and went anyway! I mean, come on! I just have to read the next book and find out what happens at Camp Rituhbukkee! Until then, great job with the series :)

Charlie Joe Jackson is one of the best book I ever read. The book is about Charlie trying to get his grades fixed so he could not go to a reading camp that his parents tolled him he was gonna go. The Plot of the book is that he starts to go to all clases and he sees how he can be a really good student and how he can improve a lot. I think that this is a really funny book and that you will be really interested with it. I do recommend you this book if you are 12 or less because its a book for kids. My rating for this is 5/5 because I really liked this book and I laughed a lot.

My 10 year old son enjoys the books of Charlie Joe Jackson so I read this to see how good they are. Tommy Greenwald now has a new adult fan. This story is excellent. Charlie Joe Jackson is a bright underachiever who finds himself in trouble with grades. He performs in a community drama to get extra credit and discovers new talents that embarrass, but help him.

After finishing the first book in the Charlie Joe Jackson book series, I immediately proceeded to read the second book. Personally, it did not sustain the level of comedy it had in the first book, but I will say that it is a page turner. At this point, I can wholeheartedly say that I'm committed to perusing the rest of the books from this series. I've grown fond of the characters.

Charlie Joe Jackson went through a number of opticals to get money needed to get a plain ticket to visit his friend/person he likes. She was moving, but then in the end his crush wasn’t moving at all.

Deși cartea a pus accent și pe descoperirea unor calități necesare unui tânăr în creștere cum ar fi curajul și prietenia faptul că s-au alocat destul de multe pagini scenetei de la ora de teatru ma face să îi dau 4 din 5 stele

I didn't really enjoy reading this book. There was very little humor and romance which i didn't really like. I can relate to the character of the book but this might be a better book for people other than me.

Charlie Joe Jackson is a smart, talented, likeable guy. He just doesn't believe in applying his abilities to school.

I've always liked Ms. Ferrell, and I'm pretty sure she always liked me, but that didn't mean we always saw eye to eye on things.

Life, for example. We definitely didn't see eye to eye on life.

She saw life as a constant opportunity to learn, and to be amazed by literature, culture, society, and all sorts of things that make the world special.

Whereas I saw life as something to enjoy, without being distracted by annoying things like reading and writing and working.

But Charlie Joe has a problem: his parents are fed up with his bad grades and disappointing report cards. They've decided to send him to Camp Rituhbukkee (pronounced Read-A-Bookie) for the summer to help him get his act together. Remember, this is the same Charlie Joe Jackson who previously wrote his Guide to NOT Reading, so the camp is a completely unacceptable option.

He has one hope: he's negotiated with his parents that if he can change his act enough the final quarter of school so that he gets straight A's on the final report card of the year, he won't have to go. That means actually reading and studying and applying himself in all of his core classes. But in Art, Gym, and Drama, where attitude and participation are everything, it means actually asking the teachers for extra credit.

Just so you can understand the difficulty of the road ahead, I should probably mention that the best report card I ever got was one sentence long: "Charlie Joe is an intelligent, funny child with a bright future ahead of him, although he can be a bit mischievous at times."

That was in kindergarten.

So Charlie Joe has to learn to negotiate academics, extra credit, interpersonal dynamics with parents, teachers, and authorities, and interpersonal dynamics with the friends and peers he turns to for help. Whoever would have thought that studiously indifferent slacker Charlie Joe would be trying out for the school musical?

I love Charlie Joe as narrator; his voice, wit, and wisdom are always entertaining and consistently funny. These are excellent books and I'm already anticipating the next one.

Charlie Joe's Special Bonus Tip:

YOU CAN AVOID EXTRA CREDIT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO

This book is about getting extra credit. But I wouldn't have written it if I didn't have to get extra credit in the first place. And that probably would have been a whole lot easier.

Here are some of the ways you can avoid having to get extra credit:

1. If your teacher makes a joke, don't make a funnier joke right after.

2. Don't come in late to class and claim, "All of the clocks in this school are wrong."

3. Don't try and pay for lunch with Monopoly money.

4. In Gym, don't try to dunk a real basketball into a Nerf hoop.

5. Eat your lunch during Lunch, not Math.

6. Remember that Science is not recess.

7. "I want to be a professional finger-painter" is not a legitimate reason for getting into a paint fight in Art class.

8. Be the opposite of me.

Charlie Joe Jackson, a boy who has thousands of character traits to the point that the list could go on forever, is back. This time he is stuck wondering whether to tear up his report card or not. Eventually he chooses to show it to his parents, which was a really bad move. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson furiously schedule an appointment with his old elementary teacher to see what’s wrong and why Charlie Joe is getting bad marks. Charlie Joe, sitting in a room which you can tell from the air was full of boredom, jumped out of his seat when he heard his teacher about going to a summer reading camp. It’s not the the thought of having to read books, which he strongly disliked, made him shocked, it was the thought of having to waste his precious summer that meant so much to him. No more video games, no more sitting around, no more everything that was fun. His summer was ruined. Fortunately, his parents came up to an agreement that if his grades go up in the last quarter, he’s allowed to do whatever he wants in Summer. Charlie Joe is going to work super hard to get his grades up, not forgetting that he also has to do extra credit to get his grades up in the electives. Whatever it takes, even though he has to spend his last quarter all in school, he’s going to try his best to make his dream come true. Honestly, I found this book pretty amazing and fun to read, even though I hate reading. The story of his life is so similar to mine and it’s pretty interesting. What makes this book even better is the fact that it’s in the present, not the past nor the future. So definitely I’ll recommend this book to everyone who hates or likes reading. I’m sure after you read it, you’ll recommend this book to almost everyone as well. This book is not historical fiction nor fantasy. I found this book interesting because they mention present bands in it and cartoon characters. Here is a quote from the book which I hope might get your attention to reading it. “ Wikipedia is amazing. But it’s not always 100 percent accurate. For example, here’s how they define extra credit:” " I'm telling you, after Brian Jones died, the Rolling Stone lost some of their weird creativity that they never got back." and " Um, I'm more of a Beatles guy. But I guess 'Satisfaction.’"

Have u ever wonder how to get extra credit and still be cool? Well you should read this book. MY BOOK NAME IS CHARLIE JOE JACKSON'S GUIDE TO EXTRA CREDIT BY TOMMY GRUNEWALD i THINK THIS IS THE IS THE SECOND BEST BOOK I HAVE READ NO EXCEPTIONS.I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK AND HIS FIRST BOOK.

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT A BOY NAMED CHARLIE JOE HE GIVES USE A KINDA UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO GET EXTRA CREDIT BUT NOT TO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT. A FUNNY QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK IS "THERE'S A FINE LINE BETWEEN GETTING EXTRA CREDIT AND HAVING NO LIFE.HERE AR A FEW SINGS YOU'RE DOING TO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT,1.YOU DON'T USE YOUR MAXIMUM ALLOWED TEXT MESSAGES FOR THE MONTHS.2.YOU HAVE NOT THOUGHT ABOUT A MOVIE FOR 6 STRAIGHT HOURS.3.THE SCREEN ON YOUR TV IS COLD.4.TEACHERS ACTUALLY SMILE WHEN THEY SEE YOU COMING PAST.THIS CONFLICT IS PERSON VS PERSONS.

I CAN RELATE TO CHARLIE JOE BECAUSE HE WANTS TO EARN BUT HE ALSO WANTS TO BE COOL. LIKE I WANT TO BE COOL BUT ALSO WANTS TO GET GOOD GRADES JUST LIKE HIM. LIKE IN HIS FIRST BOOK HE WAS TRYING TO GET OTHER BOYS TO DO HIS WORK FOR HIM I DON'T DO THAT BUT THAT COULD WORK.CHARLIE JOE JACKSON'S GUIDE TO EXTRA CREDIT IS A GOOD TITLE BECAUSE THE BOOK IS REALLY ABOUT A BOOK OF guide's TO EXTRA CREDIT THERE REALLY NOT MUCH TO SAY.

I WAS SURPRISED WHEN HE TRY OUT FOR THE SCHOOL PLAY AND MADE IT I WOULD HAVE NEVER SEEN THE HOMECOMING WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT THAT HE WAS THE SCHOOL PLAY TYPE. LIKE HE DON'T EVEN LIKE TO READ BOOK BUT NOW HE IS ON THE SCHOOL PLAY LIKE I WAS SURPRISED. HE WAS IN HE MIDDLE OF THE STAGE SINGING A SONG ABOUT PAPER TOWEL DON'T GET WHY THE AUTHOR DON'T MAKE ONE MORE ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE BECAUSE I COULD REALLY USE THESE TIPS THAT'S HE SAYING BECAUSE THEY HELP ME AND I AM SURE THEY COULD HELP YOU.

OK SO IF I HAD TO RATE this BOOK ON A SCALE ONE TO TEN IT WOULD BE A TEN BECAUSE LIKE I SAID THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ.I KINDA LIKE HIS TIPS BECAUSE THEY HELP.I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO 6TH GRADERS BECAUSE HE IS END THE 6TH GRADE AND THE TIPS COULD HELP HIM.SO HAVE YOU EVER WONDER HOW TO GET EXTRA CREDIT BUT STILL BE COOL.....READ THIS BOOK!!!!

Do you want to know how to get better grades in your school? Well if you do read this book. The genre of this story is realistic fiction, I liked this book but it wasn't my best books. But I relate Charlie Joe to me because he hates school and I also hate school.
This book takes place in present time and in a school. Charlie really doesn't care for school or books, and his grades are average. When Charlie gets his report card and shows it to his parents he is scared because he knows they werent the grades his parents liked. When he shows them the report card they get mad and see a flyer about academic camp.Charlie Joe really wants to get straight A's and if he doesn't then he will have to go to academic camp. Charlie Joe really doesn't want to go to academic camp so in order for him to do that he would have to lose the girl of his dreams and had to be in a play that was about the inventor of paper towels. The conflict of this story is Person vs Person because Charlie is against his parents on not trying to go to academic camp.
I can relate to Charlie by not wanting to read or extra credit. I can relate to him with me because like him I would give it all I got to try and get better grades. I was surprise when his parents didn't send him to the camp. I was surprised because he had 1 bad grade still but his parents made an exception to it.
My favorite part about this book was Charlie being in the play. It was my favorite part because he had the part of him inventing paper towels. I was glad that his parents didn't send him to academic camp. I was glad because even though he wanted to go his parents let him because he only got one bad grade.
I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because he had gave me some good tips and it was a good book but not one of my best books. I would recommend this book to anyone who has bad grades to read this book so they can get there grades up. If you want to get better grades in school then you should read this book.
