She's the vampire that could destroy a nation. At least, that's what Pinkerton detective Finn Dunne thinks of Tara Fox. Capturing her aboard a ship sneaking its way northward, he's convinced she's been sent to take out President Lincoln. While she's certainly the most attractive assassin he's ever faced, that won't keep him from his duty.Tara has always been caught between worlds. As a vampire born and raised in Key West, she has many friends among the humans. Many friends that are now fighting and dying in the raging Civil War.When her strange dreams began, she thought of them as abstract visions. But she now knows that she must travel to Washington, D.C., and protect the president at all costs. Finn still won't trust her, despite what he's seen. And if Tara has to go through him-or bring reinforcements-to save Lincoln, she will do whatever it takes, even if it costs her her heart.

I thought this was a great twist on a Civil War romance. Not real crazy about vampire novels, but since is set in the Civil War time period and knowing Heather Graham's writing, I thought I would get it a chance. Glad I did as it had me continuously coming back. I was disappoint when the story ended. Another interesting book by Ms. Graham!!
We have another Fox and she doesn’t know all about herself, but she knows some things, as well as culture of another group found in Key West and Haiti. Her time spent as a prisoner was interesting as it quickly changed to all working together to stop the vampires and the attack on the President. The role of the Civil War and the two sides played quite a background to this stories and series. Finn was a new addition and another half breed, but not from the Fox lineage. Their chemistry is great and I am intrigued by a couple of both being half breeds. The evil vampire was predictable in this story, but it was played well with the back and forth!
This story says it is the 3 of 3 books, but I really hope there are more as I want to know more about the dad Fox and the story of the siblings!
Can I just start by saying I totally loved the proposal scene! The hate then love story line is lowkey getting old for me. I liked the story but I thought the president would die. I felt like it was so obvious. Also everyone needs a Richard in their life. OMG! The Gator definitely proves that its the last person you expect that turns out to be the scoundrel. I didn't expect the vampire story line to unfold the way it did. I kind of expected to see Tara and Finn in their vampire act but they were just heroes.
I picked up this book mainly because of the author. I am not a fan of Vampire stories but i am a fan of Heather Graham. This story is a very fast moving and great action moving. I liked the way she was able to take history , mystery, adventure and the unknown into a quick moving story. I also liked the way she was able to put Abraham Lincoln , the civil war between the north and south, the mystery of the unknown world , hate and love and be able to wrap it all into a quick adventure.
This was an interesting story set back in 1863. Tara is half human, half vampire. She keeps having visions of President Lincoln. As she tries to get from Florida to see the President, she runs into Finn, a Pinkerton agent sent to protect the president. Of course, they set off on the wrong foot but as they fight the evils of war and nature, they come to realize they have more in common than they thought. A good story even if it did involve vampires....which I hate!
While I wasn't really fond of the last book I read from this series I really liked this one. There is much more of a story in this book. Yes, it's vampires and Abe Lincoln but it is done tastefully. A lot of historical fiction in this. The H was a bit of a PITA but he grows on you. The h I liked from the start. It's kinda old school but done much better.
This didn't read like Graham at all. Lots of awkward phrasing and misused vocabulary (as in yanking a sword from its hilt, when scabbard was plainly meant). Has she pulled a Patterson and farmed out the actual writing to others?
Bride of the Night by Heather Graham ISBN 978-0373776153
The book “Bride of Night” is a paranormal romantic suspense novel set during the Civil War in Florida. The Pinkerton Agent, Finn Dunne, has a duty of protecting President Lincoln and his duties take him from the President’s side to investigate a possible assassination attempt and into the very close proximity of the only possible threat, Miss Tara Fox, to the President that ever got away from him. This book is an enthralling read that holds true to the world the author created and the known history of Florida in the Civil War. The characters are hybrid vampires who strive to do their duty to friends and country while keeping their identities secret and their nature hidden. The mystery of the villain is kept well hidden until the very end when the heroine’s half siblings swoop in to save the day. For readers who like the paranormal and historical fiction – this novel is a treasure.
The heroes Finn and Tara are surrounded by a cornucopia of great people: Tara’s childhood friend, Richard Anderson who is a Confederate blockade runner and closer than a brother and Seminole Pete, the man who acted as her step-father after her mother’s death. Finn comes down on a Union vessel and after an exciting experience they all end up on an island having to work together to survive. The real danger of untrained vampires is a very large threat on the island they are on and eventually Key West where Richard Anderson and Tara Fox grew up. Everyone needs to forget regional lines to work against a common enemy and that is a powerful aspect of both conflict and resolution.
The time period of the Civil War has been well researched and the descriptions of battle and peoples’ thoughts about war seem accurate and well developed. The islands off of Florida mainland are beautiful and great time as been used in the setting selection. The Caribbean feel of some of the minor characters add depth to the setting and community that Tara grew up in and the reader understands how important this place is to her.
A strong villain is essential to every suspense novel and I feel that I cannot say too much without giving away the book; however, the reader will be very satisfied with the ending for the author has crafted a story that is complete.
“Bride of the Night” was a quick and compelling read. Be prepared for leaving the lights on too late and forgetting such menial tasks as laundry and dishes when you open this book. Tara and Finn have a whirl-wind story through the South as they work together to protect President Lincoln and help save the community that Tara calls home. This is one book that when you close you hope that you hope to seem Tara and Finn again! It is a great historical paranormal romantic suspense novel.
Bride of the Night is a paranormal romance set during The Civil War.
Our main characters Tara and Finn are both half-blood vampires (human mother, vampire father). Tara had never met anyone like her before, she suspected there were more of her kind but had never encountered one until the day she meets Finn. Finn is a Pinkerton detective in charge of President Lincoln’s security, he knows others like him that also work for the president, but Tara is different, she doesn’t know much about their kind, what she knows is because she had discovered by herself. She doesn’t even know she has half-siblings. At first Finn sees her as a treat to the president, he knows there is more to her or at least that’s what he wants to believe because of his attraction to her, attraction that is making him careless and forgetful, things he had never been. Circumstances throw them together in a place where they need to work close to each other to survive. After spending sometime together Finn realizes she is as devoted to the president as he is. Tara finds Finn fascinating, it’s not just that he is the first one of her kind she has met but she admires his passion for his job and the president’s welfare.
I really liked Tara, she is sweet, caring and strong. I really liked her determination, she has an objective and does whatever is require of her to reach it. Finn is dreamy, he is a “man” of principles and courage. What I liked the most about Finn was his ability to accept when he was mistaken. They relationship developed slowly, their attraction was believable and hot.
The secondary characters are diverse and interesting. I really loved Tara’s best friend Richard and Tara’s almost step-dad Seminole Pete. But the one I loved was President Lincoln, he’s conversations with Tara were beautiful and inspiring, and I really would have loved to know more about him. Even though I had some suspicions about the villain I can almost say he was a surprise, I really liked that twist in the story.
My final thought: Although Bride of the Night was an entertaining read I had some problems with it, it felt slow and a bit repetitive at times. The actions scenes were good but they became too much of the same and I wanted the story to move along a bit faster. After some stalling the pace picked up one third to the end and there Bride of the Night became a page turner difficult to put down. What I found fascinating about this book is the way Mrs. Graham intermingles accurate historical events and details of the time with the paranormal aspects of the story; she writes them so well that they feel real and easy to believe.
Heather Graham has an incredible knack for historical descriptions, making the reader an extension of the scene, with each word creating a deeper sense of authenticity. I can't imagine the amount of research that goes into each book, the same can be said for her Krewe of Hunters series which is also fabulous. I am able to learn about these factual events through her fictional world because the details are plentiful and thorough. It's like a side adventure on a video game: I read about some battle in the Civil War, for example, and then I look it up on the computer to see what's real and what's not. I love it! Tara's "dream" discussions with Lincoln make me wish that I had the opportunity to meet with such a great man and leader for myself. The Civil War makes a believable backdrop for a vampire book and the historical additions make the story interesting and the characters more dimensional.
We are born, we love, we see the world around us, and we find our place within it. We all know laughter and happiness, and tragedy. We are the same, really.~ Lincoln, speaking to Tara
Tara and Finn make a fine couple and an even finer team. Finn takes great pride in his job as a Pinkerton man and maintains a razor sharp focus, one that Tara manages to shake. She also gives him a new sense of hope. Her ability to survive hardship and violence, while embracing her half-blood vampire status, all without losing any of the qualities that make her such a beautiful person, draws Finn closer. She feels so much and because of her Finn can as well. He accepts her equally, not to say easily as it takes time for them to acknowledge their feelings and trust. They develop slowly buy passionately, like a slow burn, that evolves into something strong and unbreakable.
As an added bonus we get to reacquaint ourselves with Cole and Megan, along with Cody and Alexandra, both couples from the other vampire books. It isn't necessary to read these in order, just fun, all stand alone just fine. I'm not the best at finding comparable authors since that is totally subjective, but I think if you like Stella Cameron (Out of Body) or Brenda Joyce (Masters of Time series) then you will probably like most of Graham's books too.
The heroine, a born vampire half breed, has been plagued recently with visions and dreams of the president Abe Lincoln being in mortal danger...Ok. Weird But Ok. When she boards the boat to take her to Washington, the Union soldiers sink the boat in a battle and she and her best friend are marooned on an island. The hero, a detective in the presidents employ, is on the lead to an assassin who was on the Confederate boat that sunk. When his boat sinks as well, he finds himself stranded on the island with his prisoners.
He instantly knows what sort of creature the heroine is, as he himself is a born half breed. But almost as soon as he puts her under custody, their small party of soldiers are attacked by hordes of newly turned vampires.
This book was so all over the place. It was set during the end of the civil war but most of the dialogue between the characters was written with modern phrasing. The heroine is treated, not as a southern lady as she would have typically been, but instead she was treated like one of the guys. Now that didn't bother me too much because the hero did state that he's a believer woman are equal citizens but I still want historical female characters to behave as they really would have in their time period. The dreams of walking with Lincoln that the heroine had was incredibly stupid and had no reason to be in the story as the army of rabid vampires took much of the focus. I did like the hero and heroine respectively. The hero started out as a cold, intensely focused man but was instantly smart enough to realize he needs the heroine's help during the battles. I didn't much care for the story after they left the island but I found the romance to be nice although a bit plain. I didn't like the typical portrayal of vampires, making them all zombie like monsters. And the fact the holy water hurts them and that the characters hide in the church wasn't my cup of tea. It wasn’t very original.
Bride of the Night is a paranormal romance at its heart. Heather Graham has woven historical events, people and places from the Civil War into this tale. Graham is so skilled at using just enough references to historical events that it gives an authenticity to the tale. Protagonist Finn is determined to eliminate all threats to his beloved President, Abraham Lincoln. Tara wants to protect the president as well, but Finn isn't sure if she is a threat. When dark creatures attack, they battle to save soldiers and civilians. The battle scenes were explosive. Other key characters had depth and developed personalities. The chemistry between Finn and Tara was wonderful, heated and felt genuine. I found myself rooting for them as a couple. If you have read any of Graham's works; you know she keeps the plot moving at a fast clip. She captures your attention from the first few pages and holds you there till the end .I truly enjoyed this book and recommend it to paranormal romance, mystery and historical romance readers alike. Bride of the Night will be available in paperback and eBook on November 22, 2011. Pre-order now. Heather Graham is an expert in historical romance. Her descriptions make the reader feel like s/he is really there. Having grown up in the Gettysburg area and with a father who was a local historian, I know something about this era and Heather doesn't disappoint. Her characters are realistic and well drawn out with problems and issues that make them "human" - even when they aren't. If I had any issues with the characters, it was that Finn seemed to give in too easily to Tara sometimes, but then, he didn't have much of a choice.
Tara and Finn are a good team. As a Pinkerton agent, Finn prides himself in his attention to detail and duty. Unfortunately for him, Tara has a tendency to shatter his focus - which makes for great conflict between them. Tara's survival instincts and vampirism are at odds with her seeming naivety, but that only makes her more likeable.
As far as paranormal romances go, this one is a good one. Add in that it is also a historical written by one of the best historical romance writers out there, and you have a very well written story. Recommended to those who like a little paranomal with their history - or a little history with their vampires.

This was the third book in a series, and I didn’t know that before I picked this up, but from what I can tell these are all pretty much stand alone. I’ve heard good things about Heather Graham, but I guess I shouldn’t have started with this book, because now my vision is skewed to the not so favorable position. The writing was bad, it was very descriptive, so descriptive you know everything that’s coming. More importantly it was boring and really not all that interesting. Yes, it’s ‘cool’ that we see a lot of the historical aspects of the end of the Civil War and how Tara really wants to save Lincoln, and how they are connected. But, overall the story is just flat, it leaves little to the imagination because it’s all drawn out for you in painstaking detail. I don’t know maybe people like everything laid out for them and the predictability of everything but this one just wasn’t for me. I will have to pick up another Heather Graham book in the future, but it’ll be one that I’ve heard more praise for.
I'll give Ms. Graham this, she's very well written and she does her research!
After that, I have nothing good to say.
Tara's character was across the board for a female lead, and worse yet not fitting to the times. The rest of the characters were kind of flat for me.
After this The book is very very very repetitive. Every other night there's a vampire mob attack. and Tara would have pretty much the same dream.
I really felt this book would have just been better written as a zombie story, because then it would have been easier to swallow, and the villain was pretty easy to see, as he was the only other character that was with them that actually was NAMED. Like gee I wonder who it could be!?
Now on to the romance. I really thought it was awkward and forced. Like I never felt those two should have any reason to fall in love or just be attracted to each other. Just boring and stale and the steamy bits were really lame.
I usually love Heather Graham books, but this one was hard for me to finish. I could not seem to get into either the story line or the characters themselves.
The story is about a female vampire, living in the South during the Civil War who wanted to protect President Lincoln and a member of his security team who is trying to track down threats to President Lincoln. Ms. Graham did a good job with her descriptions of locations and her characters, but this story is one that just didn't "speak" to me.
Hopefully, the next Heather Graham that I pick up will.

They share one secret, which is they are half human and half vampire. Now they are fighting the vampires to keep the humans safe. Shock, they fall in love and stop the real assine.

Ok, so I may be the first man to review this on Goodreads! For the most part I perfer the vampires of Stoker, King, and F Paul Wilson. I am NOT a Twilight fan. That said, I did enjoy this book. It's set in the Civil War, and seems well researched. There is enough action, and 'monster vampires' to keep me happy.
Taking a diversion from her usual mysteries involving ghosts, Heather Graham sets this historical novel back in the civil war and with vampires instead of ghosts. This a very interesting tale and left me wanting more...so I am hoping that this is part of series much like her Krew of Hunters books. I highly recommend this book.
I have to say That Heather Graham is one of my favorite authors to date. The Bride of Night and its following sequels stir up thoughts of vampires, werewolfs intermixing with the backdrop of the civil war and the wild west. I fell in love with the characters and in each looking to see Cody Fox and his friends.
Enjoyed this book about Pinkerton agent Finn Dunne who is out to find a traitor that wants to kill Pres. Lincoln. He believes that Tata Fox is that person until he arrests her and in bringing her back to Washington, DC finds that she is on his side to protect the President and also that she is half human and half vampire just as he is.
Finn Dunnellon is a Pinkerton detective in charge of keeping President Lincoln alive. Tara has a need that has her going up north to see the president both Finn and Tara are 1/2 vampire's Tara has terrible dreams that Lincoln is in trouble. She has to prove to Finn that all she wants is to see the president safe
First off, I LOVE Heather Graham books. She is in my top to read list. But, that said, this was not my favorite book of hers. The first half really dragged. The last half picked up and it ended great.
I quit reading before I got to chapter 2. I just couldn't get into it. The civil war bores me, maybe because I'm a damn Yankee, who knows. I just couldn't care less about what was happening on in this book.
