This was a little disorganized and somewhat out of date, but altogether informative and beautifully illustrated.

This is a very interesting science book that details the habits and behaviors of wolves. It describes many of the traits and characteristics of wolves and how they have changed and developed throughout the history of their species. The book gives many interesting facts that students may not have known previously. For example, did you know that when wolves wag the tip of their tail they are getting ready to attack? Or that wolves can eat the same as 100 hamburgers in a single meal? The book gives information such as this that will be very interesting and useful to students.

Step Into Reading: Wild, Wild Wolves
By: Joyce Milton
Illustrated by: Larry Schwinger

Summary:

The book Wild, Wild Wolves is mostly non-fiction because it gives real information and facts about wolves. Even though, it is non-fiction there is a little bit of a story, too. There is a story about a family that was far away and the kids were scared because they hear the wolves howling in the distance.

Did you know that wild wolves and pet dogs came from the same place? When people lived in caves, wolves would wait nearby for scraps of meat and the children played with the pups. Little by little, the wolves trusted the children. This is how dogs became pets. People still try to train dogs today like Eskimos that need dogs to pull dogsleds.

The book is full of facts. They mention about how wolves talk to each other. When they howl, at each other they are being friendly. They also wag their tails, which means that they are happy. When their ears are back, they are scared. A wolve’s paw is the same size as an adult’s hand. The jaws of a wolf is so strong that it can crack a bone in a moose’s leg. Wolves always hunt in packs and they have a need to fresh meat. A hungry wolf can eat 20 pounds in a single meal! The lead male scares the other wolves in the pack to stay with them. The other wolves will tuck their tails between their legs and they rub or lick the leader’s face. The lead female is usually the mother of the wolf pack’s cubs. It goes over the birth of cubs and the care-taking of them. After 6 months, the wolves are able to hunt on their own.

Many times, wolves are portrayed as dangerous or scary. These scary stories made people want to kill wolves. Healthy wolves do not attack people. There are more people today and fewer wolves. Most wolves are in zoos today.

Recommendation:

Do these facts interest you? If you are interested in wolves, it is kind of a neat book. It has facts and a little bit of a storyline with pictures. Then, I recommend this book to you! This book is written at a 1-3 grade level. I would give it 4.5/5 stars because it is informational, anyone can read it and you will enjoy it. It is a neat little book.

This is an educational book wrapped in the guise of a family educating their children around the campfire about the history of the wolf, it's ties to dogs, and even delves slightly into werewolf lore. It's a simple book, which would be expected as a "step into reading" book. Still, there are good bits of info and it's easy to turn through.

I like the part where the wolves were howling: “Ow-ow-ow-owooo!”

I like that wolves are very strong, especially the lead male.

They are very cute when they are babies. At first, they live in the den for three weeks. Then, by September, the pups are half-grown.

Summary: This is an informational source about the lives of wolves. It teaches the wolves' way of living and allows the readers to have a better understanding of wolves. In this book you will learn about how wolves hunt, grow, and much more. In addition to learning about wolves, you will read about the importance of wolves to other groups in America.
Prompt Questions:
Have any of you been in the woods and heard a noise that scared you?
What does tame mean?
What are packs?
What are some things you have seen dogs do when they are happy? Mad?
Critique: This book serves as a good informational resource. It could be used for small research papers for young readers. There are vocabulary words this book covers that are important for young readers to know such as packs and tame. Also, this book provides multiple pictures that accurately illustrate what a wolf looks like. Overall, this is good and easy book to understand for beginning readers.
Craft Activity:
KWL Chart- The students will divide their paper into three sections. In one column they will write down things they already know (K) about wolves. In the second column they will write down things they want to know about wolves. (W) Lastly, in the third column, the students will write what they learned about wolves. The last column will not be filled out until after the book has been read aloud to the class.

If this is Step 2, Step 1 in the Step into Reading series must be Dick and Jane books.
Other than the writing being haltingly simplistic and choppy, this is a pretty good book. The illustrations are lovely in their slightly blurred sketch way, and I applaud the effort to combat the myths that wolves are scary and terribly dangerous or that they are just wild dogs who can be tamed. A very good intro to wolves for kids, and pretty informative without being dull.

This was a very good 'lesson' book without it being 'in your face' that you were learning. It is advanced so it was a little more than my advanced 4 year old granddaughter could understand. But I just scanned through and read her bits and pieces of it that I knew she could understand. But this book explains just about 100% of what a child could ask about these animals. Very nice book to add to any child's library that likes wolves or that is homeschooled.

This is a straightforward, informative book about wolves that helps to dispel some of the misconceptions about these majestic creatures. The narrative is good for beginning readers and the illustrations are colorful, showing wolves in their natural habitat and their typical behavior. We enjoyed reading this book together.
