Farthingdale Valley #2

The Cowboy and the Hoodlum

Rate this book
Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha gonna do when I fall for you?

A job in the valley provides the break Royce so desperately needs from his regular life. Fresh air, plenty of sunshine, and hard work? That’s the ticket. Evenings around a campfire? Sign him up.

But when a new group of ex-cons arrives, ex-cons he’s responsible for, Royce realizes he is woefully unprepared. Not for the task of being team lead, he’s fully capable of that. No, it’s the bad in one particular bad boy that he is drawn to. The challenging mind beneath that messy dark hair, the insouciant slouch, and the long legs in grease-stained blue jeans and disreputable black motorcycle boots.

It’s more than Royce is prepared to resist.

The bad boy in question, Jonah, has a telling I-don’t-care shrug that reveals a heart-stopping vulnerability—and now all is lost as Royce falls hopelessly in love.

A gay m/m cowboy romance with opposites attract, fish out of water, first time, falling for the bad boy, slow burn, endless flirting, birdwatching, and s’mores around the campfire. A little sweet, a little steamy, with a guaranteed HEA.

Jackie North

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing the mainstream romances that she found at her local grocery store. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about.

She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Royce and Jonah are both at turning points in their lives, even if they couldn’t be more different. Royce is looking for a change of pace away from his family’s stately ranch. He’s not your typical cowboy either, he loves his creature comforts and isn’t ashamed! He finds that change as a team lead for a parole program for recently released inmates. Jonah, seemingly indifferent to anything and everything, has spent a couple of long years behind bars after a stupid mistake. He’s not even sure he wants to stay in the program, but he’s also not sure about heading back home to his best friend, Beck, and their chop shop in Colorado.

The Cowboy and the Hoodlum is set under the gorgeous Wyoming sky at Farthingdale Valley. As their summer together progresses, Royce and Jonah find themselves drawn together, learning things about themselves and their lives that they never thought possible.

I’ll be honest, when I first dove in, I couldn’t see how Royce and Jonah could work together. Royce was so wholesome, and it wasn’t how you’d expect a team lead to interact with their group of parolees - much to the surprise of the parolees themselves. Jonah was so moody and indifferent, it didn’t seem like he’d ever warm up to Royce or his fellow parolees. Jonah and Beck weren’t very likeable characters, especially in the beginning.

I think that’s why I enjoyed Royce and Jonah’s slow-burn romance so much! Jackie North creates some very complex characters, and watching their development through the course of the book was such a fun experience. The Cowboy and the Hoodlum was a sweet read, with the perfect amount of angst to make it interesting but not too heavy of a read. I was very pleased with how everything was tied up at the end, and it brought a huge smile to my face. If we get to see Royce, Jonah, Beck, and Gordy (you can’t forget about Gordy!) in the future that would be awesome.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

This 2nd book in the Farthingdale Valley series is sweet without being cloying, and fluffy without delving into marshmallow territory, i.e. the kind of book I've come to expect from this author.

And despite its sweetness and fluff, there are some serious themes inside too.

I like Royce a lot. He was exceptionally kind and considerate, without becoming a doormat, and it was a joy to watch him tear down Jonah's walls bit by bit. And Jonah - he grows up before our very eyes, taking a long hard look at himself and then setting out to fix not only his behavior but the hurt he's inflicted.

Lovely, just lovely.

This was a nice story but I found myself increasingly annoyed with both men. Jonah was very confusing with his relationship with his best friend (or was he) and the so-called bi-awakening of Royce which was almost bypassed. So I wanted to like it much more than I actually did. This was an MM story with mature content.

It's truly a slow-burn romance.

Royce signed up as the new team leader for the parolee program, but he has doubts about whether he'll be good at it or not. He has the backing of Gabe, the other team leader. Jonah is a hard-nosed guy from the streets, so to speak, and he has not been the do-gooder. In a way, he's a self-made man. Then he meets Royce and the attraction begins not only on his part but on Royce's part as well.

The Cowboy and the Hoodlum is another great read in the Farthingdale Valley series. I'm a big fan of second chances and the Valley parolees are like fish out of water in their new surroundings they find themselves with no fences. Royce is a new lead with a new group of parolees and he's a breath of fresh air to Jonah. Jonah is ready to get back into the life he knows and a life with his best friend Beck but his time with Royce has shown him a different life he didn't know he wanted.

Jonah was a criminal that did his time but the moment he landed in Farthingdale Valley he was ready to give his best friend a call to come get him and back to a life he thought he belonged in. What Jonah didn't expect was a smiling face with a love for birds and a Latin tongue to turn his brain into thinking of other possibilities.

Royce needed a new surrounding to balance his already weary soul and what he finds in Jonah he didn't want to turn his back on the newness that has sparked his soul. He's drawn to Jonah and his Bad Boy ways and the fact that he's never been with a man before still did not stop him from exploring the cord that draws them together.

Royce wanted to show his parolees that the Valley will show them that hard work, a comfortable place to sleep, great food, a hot shower, and acres of Mother Nature's homeland can give them a new lease for a life they could have. Jonah can't figure Royce out but his touches, smiles, and brain wraps around him giving him something he didn't know he wanted. Jonah can't leave his old life behind because it would mean he had to leave Beck behind but he was greedy and wanted both in his life. Jonah tried to keep both worlds separate but like any life storm, they collide leaving Jonah to choose a life he knows with his best friend or this new life with Royce, ice coffee, and kisses.

I loved reading Royce and Jonah's stories and the struggles they both went through on the journey of discovering love, friendship, and forgiveness. Royce knew he wanted Jonah but would never ask him to turn his back on his childhood friend and Jonah wanted Royce and his best friend. The Cowboy and the Hoodlum is another heart twister that only Jackie North could deliver with or without iced coffee.

It's no secret that I love Jackie North. I love her way with words, her slow burn romances, her characters, and just the beauty of the stories that she tells. This book is no exception. It combines all of those wonderful things. In this book, we meet Royce and Jonah.

Royce Thackery is an unusual cowboy--some might even call him fussy. I loved that he was such a departure from the usual cowboy/ranchers that we've seen in the past. Royce loved his simple pleasures (wrinkle free clothing, silk/satin scarves, his tea and coffee, books). He loved things just so. I cracked up when he served charcuterie boards to the ex-cons on their first day and how he always made sure that had snacks and things that he loved. He was such a caretaker. His kindness and understanding were so unbelievable. I think I fell for him just like Jonah did. We all need someone like Royce who will support us in all things. The way he responded to Beck, Jonah's best friend, after everything just proves what a wonderful person he is. Plus, his bird fascination was so adorable.

Jonah was an interesting character. He wasn't innocent of his crimes and he never mentioned regretting them. In fact, he often seemed proud of them. However, Jonah blossomed under Royce's gentleness and care. It was fascinating to watch him learn how to merge these two parts of this life (Royce and Beck).

Beck took a little bit of time to warm up to. He was so hard and cruel to Royce. But once Royce turned that care and understanding on Beck, he started to open up and flourish as well. I loved how Royce welcomed Beck and didn't try to push him out of Jonah's life. The ending was really good for all of them.

My one complaint is not seeing an extended epilogue. I would have love to have seen Jonah and Royce a few years down the line when they had settled into the Thackery Ranch. What would that look like? How would Gordy and Beck fit in as well?

This is definitely shaping up to be a great series and I cannot wait for the next one!

I'm really enjoying the premise of this series set at Farthingdale Ranch, giving a chance for ex cons to work their parole there, helping to build the new guest experience side.
Jonah has done two years inside and is now set to spend the summer in the valley. None of it meets his expectations; being provided with quality clothes and toiletries, a sturdy purpose built tent, tasty home cooked food, and Royce. Royce is the lead for the second team of paroles. He is probably not what you'd expect someone who works on a ranch or with ex-cons to be but he works it well and is good at what he does. With his pomade, ironed clothes and calling out the Latin words for birds and plants, he's like no one Jonah or the others have ever met but Jonah is drawn to him from the start and it's a wonderful slow burn read as the two men dance around each other. It's a whole new experience for Royce, having never been with a man but he's not backing down from this new attraction and any growing feelings. I really like that there's not a no fraternising policy in place as it makes for a less angsty story, though Jonah has enough to contend with when it comes to his best friend, Beck, who thinks things will go right back to how they were before Jonah ended up in prison. That turns into the dramatic part of the story as Jonah's old and new worlds collide and he has to decide which Jonah he's going to be.
The story moves along at quite a good place and the author has written the ranch and valley in such a way that it's so easy to imagine the settings for all of the scenes, wishing it's a place you could visit. I love just how different Royce and Jonah are but also how well they go together. Neither is put off by those differences, if anything, it's what they like about each other and they look more than skin deep, liking the man inside as well. This is a story I would love to see continued after the epilogue as there is a lot of potential for a couple of other characters and the ranch itself.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

It's good to visit the Farthingdale Ranch area again, a place of second chances, friendship, warm support, and chances for love. In this book, Jonah is a rough-taking ex-con who was in prison for almost two years for possession of ghost license plates. Prior to that, he's run a successful car theft ring and chop shop with his childhood buddy for years. Now, he's agreed to spend five months in a probationary program in Farthingdale Valley, where he will help make improvements in preparation for the opening of a new tourist retreat. Everything in his childhood led to a life of crime, but he's been bored of that life for quite a while and is open to finding a better path in life.

Royce has just accepted a position as a team lead at the program, overseeing a group of four incoming ex-cons. Royce is a unique person who likes many creature comforts, but he's also rugged and works hard in the outdoors. He's very knowledgeable about nature and tends to see the best in people. He definitely has high hopes for the new program. When he and Jonah meet, they both feel an immediate attraction, although Royce has never been with a man before. Can these two make a new path together that is law-abiding and full of mutual respect and affection? This book has friendship, a supportive community, and a beautiful love.

Royce Thackery is a different type of cowboy. He likes his creature comforts, his soft scarfs, his lavender tea, SPF 45 sunscreen and the pomade which keeps his hair neat. With his cowboy hat on or off. Jonah is a classic bad boy with his tight black tee shirt and his heavy, black biker boots.
They're total opposites. But each is drawn to the other. Jonah can't get enough of Royce's kindness and his gentle approach with the ex-cons in his care. And Royce sees through Jonah's rough, uncaring attitude to the lost man underneath.
Beyond the opposites attract, gay for you story, is a rich tale of redemption and finally finding your place in the world. With the beautiful Farthingdale Valley and Ranch as a backdrop, North weaves her words with a soothing, steady cadence. As with the other Farthingdale stories, this book feels like a sweet, slow country dance.
Jonah and Royce have a sweet chemistry. Royce gentles the bad boy, teaching him the Latin names of the birds and Wyoming flora. But most of all, he offers him love and hope. Hope for a better life.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I can't say it was a quick read, because I wanted to savor Jonah and Royce's story. And never have it end.
I think it's time for a reread of the Farthingdale Ranch series.

Jackie North is my queen of redemption, and “The Cowboy and the Hoodlum,” Book 2 in her Farthingdale Ranch series, is vintage North. Sweet and direct, it exemplifies her belief in love’s power to heal.

In this standalone, Jonah, has completed a two-year prison sentence for making “ghost” license plates. Like his bestie, Beck, who co-owns their automotive “chop shop,” Jonah has exploited people, “looking down at everyone else, those rule followers, those model citizens.” His own family never cared, and prison was dehumanizing, so he’s naturally suspicious of any niceties offered by his parole work assignment, like comfortable housing, good food, new clothes, soft soap, hot water and skin lotions. He’s shocked that his boss, Royce, expects everyone to act as well as they are treated. But can Jonah change, or will Beck and the old lifestyle pull him back?

Meanwhile, Royce, whose family owns many properties and a horse farm, has come to work at Farthingdale to clear his head after a divorce. Though he’s never been attracted to men, he only known strong family support. He’s untroubled by his interest in Jonah. Raised to appreciate the finer things, he values nature, has self-confidence and wants to give Jonah every chance to live up to his better nature. Will Royce’s soft heart be broken?

A subtext in Ms. North’s work is the healing power of Mother Earth. “It was as if the valley wanted to take him through the peacefulness of itself.” Even human nature is portrayed with wildlife images, like when Royce thinks of Jonah. “A free spirit winging into Royce’s life like a sharp-taloned hawk had come down from the heavens and speared Royce’s heart.” The language sings to me.

And yet, what I like best about Ms. North’s novels is a wise awareness of limits. People can only influence one another to a small degree, usually by how they act. Royce knows better than to fight Beck for Jonah’s loyalty. “”Beck is your friend. He’s a part of you. Why would I deny you that?”

In a world where hatred can be a source of pride, I read Jackie North for hope in humanity’s capacity for ccoperation as our truest possibility for a better tomorrow. “The Cowboy and the Hoodlum,” offered me respite, tranquility, and a sensuous vacation of crisp images, soft scents, gentle caresses, mouthwatering meals and the sounds of winds, birds and lakes lapping me into a happier space. Thank you, I needed it.

DNF @ 31%

The writing made it hard to get a good read on who the MCs were as people (particularly Jonah). Between the very flowery language and long expositions that didn't give clear character traits or thoughts (Jonah's history with his friend, Beck was very hard to pin down) made the first parts a chore to read.

What I got was that Jonah was a top-dog type dude who was used to being in charge but was also bored by people who were submissive? (aka his tent mate and Beck) Not sure why none of that played into his attraction towards Royce though. And because it didn't have an impact on their romance, it felt like useless dressing and Jonah didn't really have a personality outside of reluctant parolee.

Royce was a bit easier to get in that regard, being a nerdy, apperance focused cowboy that was experiencing attraction to a man for the first time, but I would've liked to have seen more hesitance on his part considering how novel his newfound sexuality was.

What got me to DNF though was the book saying "Jonah was not a guy who fused over other guys... But Royce was another matter, and Jonah wanted to help if he could."

Why did Jonah want to help Royce? Yes, there was indications of attraction, but the line literally just implied that Jonah didn't usually care for other men's comforts. What about Royce made him suddenly want to care? A throwaway line to handwave the lack of true romance or reasoning is such a lazy way to show that Jonah had begun falling for Royce and really just underscored how weak Jonah's characterization was. If his entire bad boy persona was so quickly dropped in favor of unjustified affection, what the hell is the point of character development or romance? I needed to see more scenes that showed Jonah warming up and craving Royce's presence. More of Royce giving Jonah his scarf, but escalating into more meaningful gestures that address some character flaw or conflict inside of Jonah that makes his affection believable.

Not just, Royce gave me a scarf, I stole it because he's hot and was nice to me a few times.

TL;DR Not a fan of the writing style. Characters are weak and the romance is too.

I had quite different feelings about this book.

In the beginning I couldn't warm up to Jonah at all, he is an ex-con who doesn't show any remorse and while he was reluctant to take his friend's offer to run away, he also didn't see any need to move his life around.

Royce - I just found him an odd person for a rancher. Not so much that he loves his comfort but I would have thought his previous life would have mean he is a lot more practical.

Both are definitely a case of opposite attracts. Royce has a case of bi-awakening and can't really get a hold of Jonah's personality and behaviour. Royce, being a care taker by heart, tries to make his team feel at home and in some cases overwhelms them with his way of doing things.

I like how Jonah develops from the moody bad boy to finding ways to be alone with Royce and both do realise their attractions. He had suddenly someone who valued him, who was interested in what he thinks and does. In a way Royce's caring was more than just practical needs like food, showers and clothing, it was caring for Jonah's soul as well.

Beck - originally I didn't like him at all. It felt that he only wanted to continue his life of crime and both, he and Jonah, didn't learn anything from Jonah's arrest and stint in jail. But it also became clear that Jonah wasn't that innocent in his behaviour towards Beck either. When it all came to a blow up, both realised what was wrong and I like how they repaired their friendship and also how Beck became part of the team.

It's definitely a slow burn romance and it was a tad on the long side. I would have loved to see more of Gabe and his team as well.

Looking forward to the next book in his series.

Another sweet, steady read from Jackie North!⁣

Royce, divorced and looking for... something in his life, is happy to move on from being a ranch hand and work as a team lead on the parolee program at Farthingdale Valley. He's not sure what to expect, having missed out on most of the training, but it's for sure not Jonah, who's a bad boy from head to toe.⁣

Jonah doesn't know what to make of Royce at first. He's too pampered, too sincere. But that might just be the perfect fit for him if he's willing to give it a shot.⁣

Royce is definitely one of the more fun 'cowboy' characters that have popped up in this series or North's earlier Farthingdale Ranch series so far. He's fussy, almost a geek, and terribly earnest, which shouldn't work except it really does. The magic of the ranch, and now the valley, are enough to work wonders on all these characters.⁣

He and Jonah are an interesting pair. They're instantly drawn to each other, and this is as soft a romance as in North's other books, though that doesn't mean things don't get spicy! 😉 It's great to see the way they both grow, with Royce confronting the fact that he's likely bisexual and Jonah beginning to build the life he really wants for himself. ⁣

I love the rhythm and cadence of these books, and the fact that even though there are darker themes (particularly in this series, what with many of the characters having recently been in prison), they are generally low-angst.⁣

I'm also excited to see where things are going! There seem to be a few options for the next book, so I can't wait to find out who's getting with who!⁣

Jackie North has continued to not disappoint me with her second book in the Farthingdale Valley series! I have absolutely loved reading her books. This one was a wonderful read for me! I could feel that slow heat between the 2 MCs!!!! Throw in the childhood friend of one of the MCs makes for somewhat a villain in the story. It’s recommended that you read the first book in the series although not necessary. It’s much nicer when you know who the other minor characters in this story are and you can connect the dots. More than 5 stars reading from me!

The story focuses on Royce Thackery a cowboy who has an affinity for pomade hairstyle was hired to help Gabe run the program for parolees in the Farthingdale Valley. He was the team leader for 4 parolees. The bit backstory is he had just gotten divorced from a woman so he was seeking new experiences and it led him to Farthingdale.

One of the parolees was Jonah, who had gone to prison for getting caught with “ghost license plates”. After two years, he was released into the program. He had run an auto shop with his bestie, Beck which included selling stolen auto parts. He was the one who got caught and had gone to prison. Beck had visited him in prison. When he was released into the program, he planned to ditch the program and head out with Beck but something made him decide to stay. That’s where I’m going to stop and encourage you to pick up the book and read to find out what happens!

Are you kidding me? How am I supposed to put my thoughts into words after having read a book that made all the warm and fuzzies in my carefully crafted aloof exterior? What are words? This book made me feel emotions, and I am still recovering from it. Rude.

First of all, there is the character Royce? Wow. So, how could anyone not like that human version of a golden retriever? I am surprised sunflowers did not immediately bloom when he graced us with a smile. Come on! Like how did Jonah think he could resist the dude? In all seriousness, I found the build up of their relationship to be delicious, but I truly enjoyed reading the dual perspectives because I got to see how much Jonah was really drawn to Royce, and in return just how much Royce was drawn to Jonah.

Royce even made it possible for me to reconsider my impression of Beck. The ending was so cute and sweet. The other "ex-cons" that were essentially like little children to Royce were also adorable. That McDonald's scene was such a kid move with Royce playing the mom in the scenario. I had a good laugh with that one. I actually think I did not stop smiling when I was reading this book. Hard to return to my RBF when Royce and Jonah are being all cute and whatnot.

I loved this book. I don't have a criticism just uh gimme me more. :) Please and thank you.

A rancher with a love for the finer things and an ex-con who isn’t sure he’s ready to give up his old life.

This is an opposite attract, slow-burn romance. Classic Jackie North. Royce seems out of place with his fancy pomade & lavender tea, but he certainly brings a different perspective and atmosphere to this ranch designed to give ex-cons a second chance. Spreading joy for the outdoors, good food and fresh clothes that these men have likely never experienced.

Jonah did two years for selling ghost plates and stealing cars. He’s unsure of the direction he wants to take now that he’s out. Skeptical of this life being offered to him, but also hesitant to return to his old life. Even with his best friend doing his damndest to make that happen.

Royce and Jonah were sweet together. Royce found someone who appreciated everything about him, even his quirky sides. And Jonah found someone who softened his hard edges and let him see a different possibility for his life. One that has hope, love, and someone who truly wants him.

Watching Jonah melt and show vulnerability was a particular delight.

I’m enjoying this new series set in Farthingdale Valley. Royce and Jonah’s romance is sweet, and I liked the silently different dynamic with Jonah’s friendship with his best friend, Beck, and how that didn’t go how I expected. As always it was wonderful revisiting Farthingdale, and catching up with old friends, while making new ones.

Royce is a sweetheart, and wonderfully nerdy with his love of wildlife, and knowing the Latin names for everything. I like how he’s gentle and understanding and wins over the ex cons by treating them with respect and kindness. I love the little things about him, like his love of the finer things in life, and his scarves. I wasn’t surprised that Jonah fell for him. He’s just what Jonah needs with his rough background, and Jonah in turn looks after Royce and is fiercely protective. Their scenes together are sweet, and these two opposites fit perfectly together.

Beck is an interesting character and very much a part of this romance. He’s the one who changes the most in the course of the story, and I loved how he got his own HEA. I love how Royce comes to understand how important Jonah and Beck’s friendship is and goes out of his way to help it thrive.

I also liked Royce’s relationship with his grandfather who is supportive, caring, and practical.

I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.

This is the second book in the series and I have to confess I didn't like it as much as the first one, but that is just personal preference. I'm sure many will love this book.

Royce and Jonah were total opposites, Royce is team leader at Farthingdale Ranch for a group of ex-cons of which Jonah is part. Royce is a bit of a dandy, he likes his teas, his scarfs, knows a lot of birds by their Latin names and believes everybody deserves a second chance. Jonah was a bit of a bad boy, he used to run a chop shop with his best friend Beck and got arrested for driving around with ghost plates and pot. He served two years of prison and will now join the program.

When both MC's meet, there's Royce feels an immediate attraction to Jonah despite never having felt anything for a man. He can see right through Jonah's though exterior and show him with gentleness that there are people he can trust. Jonah is out and feels the same about Royce and does everything he can to get a smile out of Royce and to be the best he can.

There is some minor tension in the form of Beck, who comes and visits and doesn't understand that Jonah seems to have found his place. But everything gets resolved in the end.

I am loving this cowboy and reformed criminal romance series! The first book of this series was so very good and I wasn't sure how the rest of the series would compare but if anything, book two was even better! The characters in this world are the most amazing humans, some of whom have made mistakes in the past. I love that everyone in Farthingdale Valley is working toward a better future, not only in the Valley but in their own lives as well. Royce and Jonah were so sweet together, even though it was a slow burn for these two. Royce was an interesting character from the very beginning, standing out from the typical image of a cowboy but so full of kindness and tenacity. Jonah was harder to understand or relate to but considering everything he had been through, it was completely understandable why he was unwilling to trust anyone right away. I loved getting to see these two find their way to their HEA and even enjoyed seeing the friendship between Jonah and Beck become more real and functional as well as a friendship between Royce and Beck. The ending was so very sweet and I was happy to see where these two ended up. I hope we aren't done with this world yet because there are so many other side characters I would love to see find their HEA!

This book felt a little different but was all the more awesome because of its uniqueness to the rest of the series/world. The author put together two guys in an environment that seemed like it wouldn’t work. A bad boy, ex-con, in leather and motorcycle boots, a fussy, prim, intellectual, straight cowboy, and the Farthingdale Valley where every day is filled with random weather and a lot of manual labor.

Somehow, the mix worked. And it worked really well.

This book was also very much about the emotional connection and needs of the characters, rather than the physical. Yes, the physical attraction was there, but almost from the start, the two MC’s emotions tangling and, ultimately, complimenting, reinforcing, and healing one another is the strongest theme in the story. Two side characters also get some star treatment – this is not an MM+ book – but their importance in the story was given a nice reward.

Ultimately, the book was a gentle slow-burn without any unnecessary angst or fumbling; just two guys discovering they need each other and how they’re going to make it work.

Jonah and Royce are definitely my favorite pair in the Valley series so far!

The Cowboy and the Hoodlum is Book 2 in the Farthingdale Valley series and can be enjoyed as a standalone. This is a very enjoyable story about Royce, a team leader, and Jonah, the ex-con who steals Royce's heart. Jonah is a bad boy who unexpectedly, though inevitably, gets sent to prison. Upon release he finds himself doing his parole at the Farthingdale Valley getting it really for guests. The last thing Jonah expected was to stay and find love there. Jonah's longtime friend, Beck, had other plans then for him. He wanted Jonah back home and back to their old ways, though it seemed Jonah found a new home and a new way of doing things, though it wasn't an easy path. Honestly the best thing that could've happened to Jonah was getting arrested. I loved watching the love develop between Royce and Jonah. You could see the hesitation and want from both of them. They were sweet together and just who the other needed. I loved Royce's passion and wanting to share his knowledge. The ending was a pleasant surprise and there is definitely more to the story for Beck and Gordy. I definitely recommend this book and series and look forward to more.

I loved every moment of Jonah and Royce’s story in this 2nd novel in the new series. Like a warm and solid embrace that comforts and consoles, the vibe here is intimate and more focused on the couple’s feelings and interactions as they negotiate new love rather than on external events. Jonah, a parolee, was convicted of a petty crime and isn’t a violent person, despite the bad boy/tough guy exterior he presents to the world. Team leader Royce, with his lavender tea and hair pomade, is beautiful in a way that fascinates Jonah. I was completely drawn in by the sweetness and gentleness of their dynamic – Royce’s kindness and unconditional acceptance is a new experience for Jonah, and there is a bit of push and pull between Jonah’s idea of who he is and the man he wants to be. He is challenged to trust Royce with his heart, and I subscribe to the assertion here that love inspires us to be our best selves. There is enough steam to fuel their romance, and the theme of found family that includes secondary characters and drives the story is emblematic of Farthingdale Valley itself, an oasis of acceptance which tends to bring together people from disparate backgrounds.

Opposites Attract!
What a juxtaposition. From the first page the reader is curious as to how Joshua and Royce could ever come together. With the magic of Ms. North's talented writing the theme of this latest Farthingdale Valley series story just works. Joshua is combating his want of a normal life, away from his life of crime, and Royce, such an up-tight man, with his pomade, shiny boots, and numerous scarfs, how can these two men wind up with each other? Well, it just does. Joshua has to battle against his old friend Beck's attempts to get Joshua to escape and return to their chop shop endeavors. Joshua desires a better life and maybe with the gentle and kind Royce he can make that happen. Royce recognizes Joshua potential to be a credit to society and even though he's never been with a man, he reaches out to Joshua. A nice addition was the inclusion of the characters, Gage and Blaze, from "The Cowboy and the Rascal" that add flavor to this story. A great second book of this new series and I look forward to whatever Ms. North creates in the future of this series.

Some dynamics seem immediately fitting for a good opposites attract pairing, and others you don’t realize would be kind of perfect until you see them realized, and I feel like Royce the refined rancher and Jonah the has-a-chip-on-his-shoulder and maybe doesn’t want to reform ex-con fall into that second group. They’re both deeply interesting characters, with flaws and strengths that overlap well, as they each come to realize over the course of the slow burn of their developing relationship. The care Royce shows Jonah and the acceptance Jonah offers him in return both allow them to be, in some ways, the best versions of themselves, and I loved that. There’s sweetness and chemistry and real feeling between these guys, and it’s hard to ask for more than that. I also found the way Jonah’s relationship with Beck, his friend and erstwhile partner in crime, plays out to be compelling and unexpected, an extra layer of interest in a story that already doesn’t lack for depth and nuance. 4.5 stars.

a wonderful read !

This is a wonderful tale with an unexpected ending !
Cowboy Royce is a “dandy” but every bit a real cowboy. Our hoodlum, Jonah, is that and has come to the ranch to start fresh.
He is intrigued by the beautiful rancher.
The ex-cons are wary of this place that could turn out to be a chain gang horror, but they learn quickly, they do matter.

Slowly we learn their stories, watch them fit in, and the beautiful land is awe inspiring. Royce teaches about birds, stars and nature as they go along.
Jonah is eager to do the chores and the nature he’s never seen before.

The two guys are flirting, but this is all firsts for Royce to be interested in a man. When the opportunity comes, he’s all aboard.
Jonah’s friend wants him back home to help with their car “business,” which causes issues.
The tale progresses and we are happy with the characters and descriptions of the gorgeous area.
Later, we get a twist I did not see coming ! It is fantastic !
ENJOY !

This is the second book in the Farthingdale Valley series. Jonah has served two years in prison for having ghost plates and possession of weed. He's offered to do his parole at the Farthingdale Ranch helping to set up a rustic area for their paying guests. The area has large grasslands for horses alongside a river. Jonah was anxious to get out of prison. He was thinking that they would be joining a "chain gang". When he arrived, he meets his team leader, Royce. Jonah didn't understand. He and the other three ex-con's were offered unlimited showers, great food, clean accomodations and new clothes.
Royce treated them fairly and with respect. Jonah had never been treated like he was important and that he mattered. His best friend, Beck wanted help him get away and go back to their chop shop. Seeing how good he had it, Jonah was having second thoughts. He liked it there and was intrigued by Royce.
This is a story about redemption, finding your place in the world besides being involved with crime, having your best friend look at life differently and finding love.
I love how Ms. North ties everything together and have it make sense.

This was an utterly lovely read, with two main characters that could not be more different but who are also perfectly matched. Both Royce and Jonah are such well developed and authentic characters, it made it so easy to become invested in their romance. Royce is just so endearing, I loved this character. I loved all his fussy idiosyncrasies and how absolutely confused and charmed by him Jonah is. After two years in prison, the fastidious Royce is a shock to Jonah’s system, I loved that he decided to lean into his connection with Royce. Royce’s internal monologues were also a favorite of mine, it was such a wonderful way to get to know and understand Royce as he starts to examine his attraction to Jonah. It’s a beautifully gentle love story, the writing has a poetic quality that was perfect for this couple. I love spending time on Farthingdale Ranch, highly recommend!❤️

THE COWBOY AND THE HOODLUM is the second book in the Farthingdale Valley series. Gabe and Blaze are still around but it is the turn of Royce and Jonah to find their happiness.

Oh, man. Where to start? First of all, I liked that Royce was fussy and acknowledged it. I liked that the others saw it too. Jonah is the typical bad boy who, when given the opportunity, finds peace in nature and sees the possibility of a different life. But this story isn't just about Royce and Jonah, it's also about Beck. And, oh boy, he's a character!!! As much as I wanted to dislike him, I could understand his feelings.

Royce is the right man for Jonah, being just what he needs. Having a partner who was loud and obviously disagreed with Jonah's choices wouldn't have worked. Instead, Jonah tries to please Royce just for one of his smiles. Let me just say, Royce is a better character than I am! He was way too easy-going and forgiving in my mind but then, I 'may' be able to hold a grudge, or so I've been told. 😂

Very different and very good. I definitely recommend this or any of the books by this author!

More Farthingdale Valley!

Plot: This second book in the Farthingdale Valley series introduces another wonderful cast of lonely characters (not just the MCs) brought together by circumstance for a second chance at life, purpose, camaraderie, and love with all the sweetness characteristic of Jackie North’s stories.
Feels: The kind of soft and fluffy feels you’d get when admiring a lovely watercolor painting
Drama: Some best friend jealousy
Heat: 2/5
Characters: Royce is adorable from the get-go, especially when you meet him unapologetically perfecting his outfit! Jonah was just looking for an escape, but life at the valley opens his eyes to a completely different way of living, especially under the care of Royce.
Pacing: Medium
Length: Solid 5+ hour read
Ending: HEA + an extra redemption and additional pairing to boot!
