James: Mercy Triumphs

Rate this book
James: Mercy Triumphs - Member Book by Beth Moore provides a personal study experience five days a week plus viewer guides for the 8 video sessions of this in-depth women's Bible study. James, Jesus' own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. 8 video sessions with 7 weeks of print study. Beth is introducing a 5-tiered study approach that she has never done before. Level 1: Watch the video sessions only. Level 2: Watch the video sessions and do the homework each week. Level 3: Watch the video sessions, do the homework each week, and, as you study, write out the entire Book of James. Level 4: Watch the video sessions, do the homework each week, write out the Book of James, and complete the "What could I do to go deeper?" section each week. This section is written in collaboration with Beth's daughter Melissa.

Good grief, I will never look at this book, or it's author, the same way again. Just when I thought this was too deep for me, I realized that no matter how much I learn from this lesson I will always be able to return to the book of James and learn more. And, that is a blessing! James writing is so practical in it's approach to handling life situations and uses the Old Testament to backup the teaching of his half-brother, Jesus.

Beth Moore uses a new format for this study. Five levels: Level one, watch the video; level two, add the homework; level three, add hand writing the book as you read it; level four, add the next level articles written by her daughter; and level 5, add memorizing the entire book of James. Whoa! I was blessed to be able to do 4 levels and hope to be able to complete level 5 at some point. This study made James a real, living, breathing person to me and not just another Bible character. It is a fantastic study!

This study was life-changing and amazing. Truly asks the question "What good is it?" when looking at our faith in Jesus Christ. What good is the deeds we do, the songs we sing, the life we lead if our faith has no real meaningful relationship with our one true Savior. James is a book I could read over & over and still leave changed, with this Bible study it explored further into the history of James and connected the relevance of words, verses and concepts in James to the points throughout the entire Bible.

Definite recommend for any woman wanting to sharpen her relationship with Jesus and challenge herself in her faith.

Supposed to take 7 weeks and it took me almost three years. Oops.
But I took so much away from this study and I’m grateful I did it! The book of James continues to be my favorite.

Ladies Bible Study -

Beth Moore studies never disappoint.

I have to confess that I have started a couple but this is one that I make a commitment that would see it to the end. I missed one session but was able to catch in on the internet.

You can do the study alone but I recommend the group setting.

After the study, I can't hear a verse from James without remembering this study. I would not have every read this way without this study. Many hidden secrets in Beth's teaching.

Appreciation to Jo Rainwater for leading the study.

***SECOND REVIEW, MAY 22, 2016***

I was blessed enough to go through this study twice, in two very different times in my life, which gave me different perspective. The first time was during the most painful experience of my life to date, when the themes of seeing joys within suffering and seeking God above all else spoke the most to me. This time, I got the opportunity to do it while in the best time of my life thus far, having walked through the painful season and looking back on the very benefits that I was looking forward to the first time. In this case, the themes of looking out for others, for DOING (or NOT doing, as the case may be) rather than just thinking or talking, cleansing my thoughts, focusing on eternal things, are what most drew me in. Altogether, I think both experiences have given me a more perfect understanding of the entire message of the book--and life story--of James.

It's a powerful message, one to ponder on long after the back cover closes. The key question: what will I do with what I've learned NOW? How will I go forward? What will stick?

***FIRST REVIEW, OCTOBER 9, 2013***

I didn't "read" so much as "complete" this one, but there's still a lot of reading material to it. I really love Beth Moore's studies of an entire book of the Bible. Well, I really like it when ANYONE does that, but she has such a knack for putting together not just the book, but also the details of the person who wrote it or the historical significance of the group of people involved in the time period.

This study looks at not only the words in the letter of James, but his life and the life of the early Jerusalem church, particularly the Jewish contingent. She goes through what Scripture says about him and also includes what historians and even legends have to say about the eldest half-brother of Jesus. There isn't a ton of historical information, but what there is is very intriguing.

Beth Moore takes what can be a controversial book of the Bible, which many people struggle with as it seems at first glance to contradict a lot of Paul's writings, and takes us through James' heart, why he felt strongly for the poor and why actions and living out faith were so important to him. She walks us through the deep Jewish background of James and how he combines that with an even deeper level of compassion and mercy to all around him. Ultimately she reveals the man and the vision and how his words and his work in the early Church have influences well into today.

This was a fascinating study of the book of James. Beth Moore incorporates a wonderful balance of historical research (along with her daughter's help), an evaluation of the meanings of words in both Greek and Hebrew, and application to current life. I also love how she ties the Old and New Testament together so the student sees how each is connected to the other...the OT is not a dusty collection of books to be left behind. James is faith in action - enter with care and great joy.

l am always amazed at the insight I gain from doing a Beth Moore Bible study....I do it at a much slower pace and download the videos myself...I find I am able to "digest" it and think about it more...I loved the different levels of intensity she offers with this study and including her daughter in this study. I will never look at James the same again...imagine being the half-brother of Jesus...

Another awesome bible study with Beth Moore; the sister is gifted! This study is about the half-brother of Jesus. After eight weeks spent with James I am sad to see it end. It's been a great ride!

Last August we started a bible study on James one of the books of the bible. Beth Moore is the author of this study. For this study her daughter Melissa helped write the study. For those of you who know Beth Moore, you know what to expect in one of her studies. For those of you who don’t you are in for a treat.
The structure of this study is eight weeks of homework where you learn all kinds of facts about James. These homework sessions are followed by video sessions with Beth emphasizing on a set of scriptures from that week’s homework or visiting scripture that was not in the homework. When you read the introduction of the study Beth gives you five levels for participating in the study. You can choose what is most comfortable to you.
The levels are:
1. Video sessions
2. Video sessions plus weekly homework.
3. Video sessions, weekly homework, and writing the book of James in the back pages of the book.
4. Video sessions, weekly homework, writing James, reading Going Deeper.
5. Video sessions, weekly homework, writing James, reading Going Deeper, and memorizing the book of James.
The Next Level sections are written by Beth’s daughter and highlights a certain portion of the scripture studied that week. Melissa pulls out facts that came up in their research.
My Thoughts:
Another great study by Beth Moore! Very engaging! I challenge everyone to take on the weekly homework. The reading has become more as I have worked through her more recent studies. Still worth the effort of studying reading another great Beth Moore Study!

A lot of typos. Some sections were hard to follow if you didn't have her exact translation. I dislike studies that lean heavily on building lessons on the importance of one English word. Every lesson was not like that, so I still liked the book.

This is a thorough, academic journey through the book of James. Beth backs up her interpretations of the bible with historical information and direct translation. She makes the scripture come alive through her depiction of James, the brother of Jesus, and his journey of becoming a believer.

I love Beth Moore's studies. She sheds light on background information while also challenging her readers to dig deeper into the Word. Whether you choose to simply follow along or hand-write and memorize the book of James along the way, you're sure to grow through this time with James.

This is maybe the best bible study I've ever taken. Wow, do you start examining your life and see where you can do better (e.g. taming one's tongue). Beth Moore is such an excellent speaker and I love that she is a little bit dramatic (not overly so) when she tells an anecdote. There's something so refreshing about her.

Beth Moore's daughter Melissa adds well-researched and thoughtful mini articles throughout, but I wish she didn't quote Moo so heavily. Also, there's something so approachable about Melissa on the page that doesn't translate to the micro-episodes facilitated by Kelly Minter. Melissa did not inherit her mother's charisma and she often looks standoffish and like she is trying to force herself not to interrupt her mother. I found this offputting, but these micro-episodes are only the first 2-3 minute of each hourlong episode/video session.

I really enjoyed learning some of the historical facts about James and the Roman history of that time period.

This study is powerful and amazing. Strongly taught, researched and written. I've done two other Beth Moore Bible studies (Esther, and Paul) and they were both very good. However this one is knock-your-socks off. (This review should apply to the whole package -- the homework book, along with the video sessions and small group discussion that takes place weekly.)

Martin Luther, the guy who nailed the proclamation (that faith comes by grace only) onto the doors around town, in response to the corrupt works-based, buy-your-way-into-heaven catholicism of his day? Remember him? He didn't know what to do with the Book of James.

... because it says faith without works is dead.

This apparent dichotomy is tackled and explored and studied in this book, referring constantly to the original work.

The Bible is like no other book - it has no limits, having not been written by men. Therefore, it can stand up to our intense scrutiny and exhaustive, energetic study. In the process, WE'RE changed. Not: "our minds our changed." WE are changed.

This is excruciatingly honest, sincere teaching.

Get rested up and buckled in if you're planning on doing this one. But it's an exciting, rewarding ride.

(I'm not quite to the end yet.)

P.S. Beth Moore is so laugh out loud funny (and moving) sometimes, that I literally have had tears running. It feels good to laugh, but also feel grief or compassion over appropriate things. She is refreshingly and powerfully honest about her own struggles; and the fact that God in Jesus teaches her just as much or more than he teaches all of us as we seek understanding on how to live and love.

LOVE Beth Moore But This Was My Least Favorite Beth Moore Study

I love Beth Moore and have completed a few of her past studies: Esther, Breaking Free, David, Daniel. There are several different participation levels for this study to choose from: 1. Just watch DVD, 2. Watch DVD and do workbook, 3. In addition to the previous you can also handwrite the whole book of James, 4. Do all the previous plus read all of Melissa's (Beth's daughter) commentaries 5. Do all of the previous plus memorize the entire book of James.

I didn't love this study. I didn't find that any of Melissa's writings added value to the overall study - but just took longer to complete the work that I felt I should do as a small group leader. Additionally, numerous times Beth had us flipping through the Bible to find other obscure references where the same word was used....again, not adding value to the overall study and making the lessons take longer to complete. And since Beth is the master at providing rich insights, I expected there to be more depth to some of the key verses in James (e.g., James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...", James 3:8 "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.").

The DVD's were extremely well done (as usual) and added a lot to the overall study. I would definitely recommend supplementing the study with the DVDs.

My least favorite Beth Moore Study....and I really have loved them all!

James Mercy Triumphs by Beth Moore is such a great in-depth Bible study on the book of James that I was sorry to see it end. Beth’s older daughter, Melissa, also had some interesting articles included from an historical standpoint based on research she did. I learned so much more about James, the author of this book, than I had known before and accepted Beth’s challenge to memorize the entire book of James, which I am in the process of still doing, having memorized the first two of the five chapters. This is a very practical study because the topics in the book of James are still relevant today: Patience, temptation, rich and poor, favoritism, judgment, controlling the tongue, wisdom,, our relationship with God, how to treat others, prayer. This study is fantastic! I really can’t say enough good about it. There are DVD’s that go with this that I enjoyed too because of some funny stories she shares from her experience to make her points. In particular, I especially liked hearing about her camping trip with the birds and the hair brush story at the airport. That is one I don’t think I’ll soon forget.

Other Beth Moore Studies I did were: Fruit of the Spirit, Daniel, which were good too. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a challenge who likes a good Bible study.

This was my first Beth Moore study. I love her energy and enthusiasm. She's got a sparky attitude that shines through in the writing and the video. Periodically, there's a more intensive look at some aspect of the week's work via a short commentary from her daughter, Melissa. These gave some interesting context and background.

This was also my first intensive study of one book of the Bible. (All the other studies I've done have been on a theme and jumped around the Bible.) It was rewarding to look at one book/author intensively. I had a real sense of accomplishment when the seven weeks was over.

I hadn't known what to expect from James. He's a hard-hitting, tell-it-like-it-is kinda guy. Beth's daily studies helped to slow down, isolate and really ponder some of his direction. She broke it apart, elaborated, asked questions and provided commentaries from theologians. In addition, the study asks you to hand write the book, as you progress through. An interesting technique! It definitely helped to remember the passages more.

This was a wretched study and I pray no one takes it but I know people will anyways. In the first sessions homework you will find that the NIV translation contradicts itself

2nd if you use t

he archaic King James version then forget it...you will not be able to answer ANY of the questions because she LOVES the NIV and NET instead.

3rd She is supportive of Contemplative Prayer which is part of the New Age Occult manifesting itself in the christian realm along with the NIV and Message bibles.
(RUN from Contemplative Prayer)

4th She was obsessed with the Shekinah Spirit in the 4th Lesson WOW That is only a devils manifesting themelseves as the Holy Spirit again RUN RUN Far Far AWAY

5th She literally informs the class in the 7th Lesson that Her god lives under the ground um the only dude that lives there is SATAN/LUCIFER/THE DEVIL
so she seriously does worship and follow SATAN

RUN RUN RUN and Don't Look Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have been warned (this is a trumpet blaring at you

Well, we are headed into our last week of this study and as with all of the Beth Moore studies that I have done in the past, this one was just as amazing. This study was set up a little differently, with 4 or 5 different ways that you could do the homework for the study. I chose to do all the homework plus write out the Book of James in the back of the workbook. I loved it! When you write something out, you have to slow down (at least I do) and actually absorb the words that you are writing out. I think I was able to get much more out of the study that way. At first, I thought that James' letter was extremely harsh but after awhile you begin to realize that his letter was written for people of a different time period/culture and he is just short and to the point! I can tell you though, makes you really start to think about your life and I spent alot of time down on my knees, talking with God about everything that James had written about, which in the end, is ultimately what all Bible studies should be about - spending more intimate time with our Heavenly Father!

This was my first Bible study ever. So it was obviously my first Beth Moore study. I didn't know what to expect going in, but it was life changing for me. I haven't read this much of the Bible or delved this deeply into subject matter ever before. I liked that Beth Moore was relatable and funny at times. I like that she didn't act holier than thou and admitted the areas she needs to work on too. I liked the videos that accompanied it, and I would say they made the study that much better. And honestly I actually liked the "homework" in the study. I did it all. So many of the segments related to me so closely in what I am going through in my life right now. It gave me helpful ways to look at things, some of the discussions changed my views, and in general I feel like it helped me to keep working on being a better person. I would highly recommend this study to anyone interested in a Bible study. It would be helpful to anyone - it isn't over just one subject - it relates to everything in life.

JAMES: MERCY TRIUMPHS is one of the better bible study/small group curriculum in recent memory. The author, BETH MOORE, is a treasure of knowledge, inspiration, and has the ability to make scripture and bible history relate to her readers lives.

The books structure is rather simple-one lesson per study or group session. The style is easy to understand and written in such a way that anyone reading the book does not have to be scripture knowledgeable before beginning the study. Moore explains it well enough for all to grasp. I appreciated the fact that original Hebrew and Greek meanings were referred to often and used for the basis of the study.

I listened to the cd collection as well that accompanies the book and something is lost in the recordings. It's apparent that you have to be witness to her tv show (where these were taped) to get the full meaning. However, the cd's were informative.

If you like Moore and/or bible study, this book is most definitely worth the investment in terms of time and money. You certainly will appreciate who James is after reading this book.

A gigantic workbook which is challenging to balance with the Bible you reference. The paper is cheap and the print is light - translation, I paid WAY too much for this workbook. Some weeks of the lesson are interesting and thought provoking, and some weeks are brutally dry. She hypes up her daughters contribution as being a part of the "next level" you go to in doing this study. I cannot see how that is so, as her daughter is simply regurgitating information she has learned as a scholar. Also, she wants you to fill in the blanks as you follow along with her video - what a pain in the keester, and very distracting from her message. How can I try to remember what she told me to write down, and then still listen to her move forward with the current weeks lesson.
She is an EMOTIONAL speaker. Too much for me. I have enough of that in my life already, I don't want to volunteer for more of it. I will not participate in one of her studies again, and I do not recommend this workbook.

Phenomenal. This study has changed my life. I wish I hadn't waited so long to do a Beth Moore! But, truly; I am totally into James. I resonate with him far better than with the Apostle Paul (although I don't think they are as far apart in their theology as has been the issue for centuries).

I chose to do all five levels of the study; a challenge, to be sure but I haven't found it burdensome in the least.

And, with memorizing the Book of James (yes, MEMORIZING THE ENTIRE BOOK OF JAMES), I'll have his words in my heart forever.

I'm so grateful our women's ministry group at our church chose this study, otherwise, I'm not sure I ever would have embarked on a Beth Moore by myself (it can be done, her workbook and DVDs are amazing) but the small group experience/discussions added so much to it.

I'm hoping we'll do more of her studies in the future.

Another great Bible study from Beth Moore! The first and last chapters are a little dull compared to the middle chapters, but necessary to lay the foundation for James' life before and after he wrote the book. There are 5 levels of participation: simply watching the videos, completing the workbook, handwriting the book of James, reading extra articles, and memorizing the book of James. Personally, I did not watch the videos. I only completed the homework and read the extra articles and the study was still very beneficial for me. I hadn't realized how very "Jewish" James was. Or how closely this book is tied to Leviticus. It was really cool to draw those parallels. Yet the overarching theme is that mercy triumphs the legalism of the Law.

In short, fantastic study. This helped me learn to apply the Word to life.
However, having gained more theological learning about James, he was NOT a half brother to Jesus. Chase down a little information on this. John was given the job of caring for Mary after Jesus was put on the cross and Jesus had no siblings, only those all that he considered brothers and sisters, but no blood relation other than Mary. Love Beth Moore but I have studied further to find out this point was wrong in Her study.
