Given her ten-year curse that leaves her beaten and bruised, Emma Patrix has grown accustomed to drinking away the pain. And with a trail of dead bodies behind her, it was only a matter of time before the law caught up.
Now she's accused of murder and she must find the one man who can help her break the curse-Calvin Konrad. But he's not the same sweet boy she remembers.
Paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. I'm a small town girl from South Dakota who enjoys secret affairs with vampires...in novels. Shhh, don't tell anyone.
I really enjoyed this book! I like mythology, but I’m most familiar with Greek and a little Norse. To get a taste of Egyptian mythology was really fascinating. The way it was weaved into the characters’ lives was interesting and added a really dire conflict.
As for the characters, I loved Emma’s character. She drowns herself in alcohol to deal with her curse and it takes its toll, but she still has a good heart. Calvin is such a brokenhearted man. He starts off as kind of a jackass, but you totally feel for him when you find out why.
Being a fairly short book can often present a challenge to get character development and plot development all packed in efficiently. I feel that the character development is there and most of the plot is. My only complaint for the plot comes in at the very end. The ending solution is a little confusing, but ultimately easy enough to just roll with.
If you’re looking for a short read that will have you wanting to say “hells yeah, ‘bout time!” one moment and have your heart squeezed in a vice so tight you think it’ll just stop in your chest the next, go read Curse of the Egyptian Goddess. It’s got an ending you’ll never see coming!
Curse of the Egyptian Goddess is a relatively fast paced mystery and romance themed novella that packs the punch and satisfaction of a full blown novel. The premises of the story is of a young girl named Cleo Patrix (she would later change it to Emma) and boy named Calvin, who are very much in love. They find a unique and mysterious pair of necklaces when their parents are on a dig in Egypt. They take the necklaces unknowingly that they bear a curse until it's much too late. One brings on a snake that injures the wearer and kills whoever touches it, and the other is a cat in which the wearer transforms - which is meant to keep the snake at bay.
Many deaths and years later, and all that is left of the young duo are themselves. However, they have led separate lives since that fateful year in Egypt. Emma must find Calvin, but when she finally does she realizes he is no longer the boy she one knew. He is a grown man now, but has his love for her waned? Do they find a way to break it? Will they be forced to suffer for the rest of their lives? Will Calvin forgive Emma, and help to undo the curse they began as children?
I really enjoyed this story, and like any good book I wish there was more. This is not to say that the author left anything out, or even leaves you hanging. No, I just fell in love with her characters and writing style. This is an author that I will keep my eye on for more reading pleasure, and you should too!
If your seeking a quick, turn paging read that is filled with mystery, love and sensual tones than this is the story for you!
There comes a point in a reader’s life when you read a book that is so outside the box but still inside the genre that it makes you fall in love with reading all over again... That was Curse of the Egyptian Goddess!
Let me tell you this book has all of my favorite things: Travel (to Egypt of course), a couple of handsome guys (they give me fever just thinking about them), a smart, snarky, and relatable female lead (Cheers Emma), and top it off with romance, HOT romance too (I remember something about handcuffs being involved).
The story follows the life of Emma (also known as Cleo as in Cleo Patrix) in the midst of tragedy; tragedy should be this girl’s middle name, and her long time/lost love Calvin (Oh, Calvin). These two have chemistry like nothing else; it's fireworks when there together (even with their clothes on). So, anyway I hate to give spoilers, but the fire is lit when these two get together. This book grabs you in the beginning and doesn't let go until the last word!
I love Lisa’s work. In fact, I’ve never read a Lisa Rayns book that I didn’t adore and Curse of the Egyptian Goddess didn’t disappoint. The story is a novella, the first in a trilogy I believe, but it reads like a stand-alone novel. The characters were lovable, the plot well developed and unpredictable, and the ending was amazingly satisfactory even though the adventures of Calvin and Cleo will continue in other books. This story engrossed me from the first sentence and didn’t let me go. I loved the ending. It was a complete surprise, and can’t wait to see how Calvin and Cleo get out of the situation they have found themselves in throughout the following books. It is very difficult to write a novella and do it well, but Lisa pulled it off. This story was unique and fascinating. It is a must read for any fan of Egyptology, paranormal/fantasy romance, or New Adult genre.
WOW what a surprise ending. Love this story. I sure hope you are writing more for these characters, i was waiting for the sparks to fly lol. Poor Calvin, LMAO. You guys really need to read this. It is about Emma being cursed at the age of 10 when her and Calvin found two golden necklaces in Egypt. Both of them seem to become cursed by the necklaces they wear, each with a different kind of affect on their life. Once together at the present time boy does he act pissed off and mean but then you learn why he acts the way he does and you start to feel sorry for their relationship. OMG the ending is still the best part.
The Curse of the Egyptian Goddess by Lisa Raynes was a very good novella. Poor Cleo was destined to live a life alone unless the curse of her necklace could be broken. 2 children Cleo and Calvin growing up together make the mistake of taking 2 necklaces from a dig site set their lives on a spiral affect. She loses everyone she loves in the world and starts drinking heavily to escape her life. Then she finds Calvin and hope is something that she may have a future if the curses could be broken. 5 stars excellent read.
This was such an easy fun read. I loved Emma (Cleo)she was a very different sort of main character. I felt for her an the situation she had gotten herself into. Never able to be close to another person, always afraid. Enter Calvin, her childhood crush, he was not what I expected at all. He had his own issues to deal with and he didn't need her to pile her own stuff on top. I was really happy with how this one ended, sometimes when I read a book, I'm disappointed by how it's left. This one made perfect sense to me, and I felt satisfied wit it.
Interesting short story. I received this from the author for an honest review. I liked the story, it's a bit too short, though. Characters are exciting and fun. Interaction between Emma and Calvin is priceless! Hope there are more adventures in the future! I am drawn to a story by the summary and the cover of the book (shallow, I know) The story gets 4 stars, but the cover only gets 3. Great writing from the author.
This novella I found to be quite spellbinding, as it is meant to be. Cleo's future happiness lies in the hands of fate.......or is it something else? The ending has an interesting twist. Recommended for anyone intrigued by the paranormal and, of course, Romance. Will give it 4 stars because it was over too quickly.
Although I really did like the story I felt like it could have been deeper. Curse of the Egyptian Goddess jumps right in with not a lot of background on your main characters. Emma (Cleo) and Calvin are cursed when they are ten years old and find some Egyptian necklace artifacts. One is a snake (Emma's) and the other a cat (Calvin). After ten years of being cursed Emma is in trouble. You see if anyone touches her necklace they die. Her entire family has been wiped out and now her first boyfriend Chad is gone too. A detective is hot on her trail and wants her arrested for murder. Emma/Cleo has no choice but to hunt Calvin down after all of these years and try to break the course. When she finds him she doesn't find a ten year old little boy anymore. She finds an angry man . Calvin (the cat) is meant to keep the snake at bay and he is the only one who can touch Cleo. Both hurt and yet driven by the past are searching for the clues to break the curse. Will they reunite and solve this mystery? Will they find love or part ways? Lisa Ryan has written a fast paced read with a lot of good bones. Do I think it could have been a bit better Yes! Did I enjoy it? Yes, very much so. I think Cleo and Calvin are fantastic characters as is the story behind them. I'd just liked to know a little bit more about them.
Unfortunately I didn't really like this story, there are a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies that I felt wasn't in context with the world Lisa Rayns created. Here are some of the things I'd like to highlight:
I didn't feel invested on Emma and Calvin's relationship. Though Rayns provided a backstory, there were some key elements missing that would convince me that theirs is a good and believable love match. The police can't just arrest and hold you in custody without enough evidence. And they certainly won't chalk up deaths, homicide/murder to the Supernatural.
Needs more research on what happens on those Egyptian dig sites.
The attacks by Apep of Emma and Calvin's metamorphosis from human to Bast was anti climactic.
What I do like about the story is Emma and Calvin's resilience and their drive to lift the curse. In Emma's case, I can't imagine losing your entire bloodline in a span of two weeks! That's brutal. As for Calvin, I admire his heart and loyalty towards Emma. Although he resented her for abandoning him, he still managed to help and forgive her. His eagerness to make up for lost time and to fulfill his desire to build a life with Emma is admirable.

This was a novella, so it was a rather quick read. While there were moments that I enjoyed, and I definitely liked Emma and Calvin’s character, there were moments that I didn’t connect with the story. I think I liked the idea of the story more than the story itself. I enjoyed Calvin and Emma’s romance and situation; the ending changed everything for me. The romance was cut off at a pretty hot moment and there wasn’t a satisfying resolution at the end. I hated the ending and felt that it was just a way to end the story instead of a place that the author arrived at. I like all different types of ending, they don’t have to be the kind where everything is happy, I only request that they come naturally; happy or sad. I think it would help if the story was fleshed out a little more.
Lisa pens "Curse of the Egyptian Goddess" in a plot filled with excitement, plenty of twists and turns that keeps you turning the pages. A great novella where you will find yourself connecting with the characters and wondering if they will ever break the curse. This is the first book in the 'Curse Trilogy' and I look forward to reading the next installment. A must read for all paranormal, fantasy fans.
This review is based on a complimentary copy from the author which was provided for an honest review.
Wow! Very interesting story! I like mythology stories, but don't think that I have ever read one based on Egyptian mythology. I didn't know what was going to happen and how Emma was going to overcome her "curse". It kept me guessing. I really enjoyed the characters, even the secondary ones. The ending was AWESOME, even if it left me wanting! I hope she writes more with Emma (Cleo) and Calvin.
Lisa Rayns weaves Egyptian lore and fantasy into a romantic arm-chair travel tale that will whisk the reader away into a magical world where love, curses, and surprises await! Take this book with you on vacation and get two trips in one.
