Touch This Earth Lightly: Glenn Murcutt in His Own Words

Rate this book
[ Duffy & Snellgrove, 1999] COLLECTORS FINE- softcover with fine interior pages. Light crimp at top right corner. 182 pages with b&w illus throughout. --A compilation of Murcutt's various comments about certain aspects of his own architecture and architecture in general. Murcutt, who is a minimalist dealing with mostly house projects in coastal Australia, is one of the very few people who respond to nature this friendly. His designs encompass very economic use of resources, in addition to great integration with nature.  He responds to the structure in nature, and not the beauty in it. His shapes are defined to this respect. He thinks that there are no styles in architecture, but rather there are only ideas beneath designs.

This was an incredibly touching book. Glenn Murcutt is an amazing person who has a really refreshing view on architecture and sustainability. The book is filled with personal stories that give much insight on how Glenn Murcutt came to be so concerned with how humans impact the environment. I was most impressed with the fact that he only builds in Australia yet he rarely designs structures that use air conditioning. Though this is a book about an architect, it is a lot more personal than technical. I would suggest it to anyone!

It's interesting book since the words is by Glenn Murcutt himself (edited by Philip Drew).
