Compiling 130 years of the Phillies, this handbook offers dedicated information to fans of Philadelphia's favorite baseball team. Topics covered include personalities, events, and facts that every fan should know without hesitation, such as important dates, player nicknames, and memorable moments. This guide to all things Phillies also includes a list of must-do Phillies-related activities, which include visiting the birthplace of Grover Clevelend Alexander, finding the best Phillies bars in the City of Brotherly Love, and searching for the remnants of the Baker Bowl.
I love reading Bill Baer on crashburnalley.com, but this book was not written at that level. Very few things to do, and the things to know are almost entirely from 1980 to 2011. Granted, prior to 1980 the Phillies were mostly terrible, but if you are going to include Tomas Perez, or reference great but non-historic plays, then you've got to give more than just a brief shout out to the old-fashioned Phillies. To write about that would have required even more research from Baer's part, and I'm sure he was working on a tight deadline, but the omission of most of the Phillies early years comes off as lazy.
This book is a great read for Phillies fans all over the world. However, I wouldn't recommend this to a non-baseball fan until they have learned a bit more about the general MLB league, and figured out which team they like best.
Bill Baer does a spectacular job of capturing the reader's attention, with short biographies of players that have made a difference, trades that went horribly wrong, employees that left a piece of themselves in the fanbase's hearts, and even things that you can do!
This should be a handybook for any die-hard Phillies fan, no matter how bad the current Phillies team is. Long live the Phils!
I hated this book! There were so many inaccuracies and Bill Baer’s list of 100 is a joke. This is quite possibly the worst book I’ve ever read in my life.
Fun and light, this is a good book if you want to get distracted for a few minutes. Lots of information that I knew already being a pretty serious Phillies fan, but it's a great resource for people who are new to the game. I would definitely recommend for a mom or dad who wants their kids to be "in the know"!
No new insights are within this book, but it's a fun little reference and nostalgia book for Phillies fans. Of course it IS the Phillies so there are an alarming number of situations like X had an awesome, historic game! Tons o' home runs & RBIs! But Phillies lose anyway. :(
It's about the Phillies, so I should like it, right? I wish I could say I did. ..but it was boring. I had to force myself to finish this and I hate when that happens. I did find out a few new things, but honestly, not enough to make me happy
