Alan Alexander Milne (pronounced /ˈmɪln/) was an English author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various children's poems.

A. A. Milne was born in Kilburn, London, to parents Vince Milne and Sarah Marie Milne (née Heginbotham) and grew up at Henley House School, 6/7 Mortimer Road (now Crescent), Kilburn, a small public school run by his father. One of his teachers was H. G. Wells who taught there in 1889–90. Milne attended Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied on a mathematics scholarship. While there, he edited and wrote for Granta, a student magazine. He collaborated with his brother Kenneth and their articles appeared over the initials AKM. Milne's work came to the attention of the leading British humour magazine Punch, where Milne was to become a contributor and later an assistant editor.

Milne joined the British Army in World War I and served as an officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and later, after a debilitating illness, the Royal Corps of Signals. He was discharged on February 14, 1919.

After the war, he wrote a denunciation of war titled Peace with Honour (1934), which he retracted somewhat with 1940's War with Honour. During World War II, Milne was one of the most prominent critics of English writer P. G. Wodehouse, who was captured at his country home in France by the Nazis and imprisoned for a year. Wodehouse made radio broadcasts about his internment, which were broadcast from Berlin. Although the light-hearted broadcasts made fun of the Germans, Milne accused Wodehouse of committing an act of near treason by cooperating with his country's enemy. Wodehouse got some revenge on his former friend by creating fatuous parodies of the Christopher Robin poems in some of his later stories, and claiming that Milne "was probably jealous of all other writers.... But I loved his stuff."

He married Dorothy "Daphne" de Sélincourt in 1913, and their only son, Christopher Robin Milne, was born in 1920. In 1925, A. A. Milne bought a country home, Cotchford Farm, in Hartfield, East Sussex. During World War II, A. A. Milne was Captain of the Home Guard in Hartfield & Forest Row, insisting on being plain 'Mr. Milne' to the members of his platoon. He retired to the farm after a stroke and brain surgery in 1952 left him an invalid and by August 1953 "he seemed very old and disenchanted".

He was 74 years old when he passed away in 1956.

Well that was just delightful!
I've no idea why my parental units didn't introduce us to these characters as kids since I think I would have really enjoyed them.
Audio book with a full cast was definitely the best way to experience these for the first time.
Piglet was by far my favourite character; such a sassy little guy!

What a fun and adorable way to spend an afternoon. Listening to the Collected Stories of Winnie the Pooh and the House at Pooh Corner. It was so very fun and sweet. And some of my favorite British Actors were the Narrators which was just priceless: Stephen Fry, Dame Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer, Jane Horrocks, and Michael Williams, written by A.A. Milne.

We get to listen to Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, Tigger, Kanga and Baby Roo. It was marvelous!!

I am a great fan of listening to the audio version of great children’s stories like this one, The Collected Stories of Winnie-The-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner by A. A. Milne (another one that comes to mind is of course, Charlotte’s Web). I was completely charmed!

What makes a book like this stand out from the crowd is that it’s written in such a way and with such grand language that it challenges the listener, child or adult, to think beyond the surface. But not only that, it delights and entertains in equal measure. The narrators in this collection are of particular merit and they have such delicious characters to become: Winnie the Pooh Bear, Christoph Robin, Owl, Piglet, Eyore, Kanga and Roo and perhaps best of all is the Narrator performed by none other than Judi Dench. The other wonderful performers are: Stephen Fry, Geoffrey Palmer, Jane Harrocks, and Michael Williams. I had one question. Where was Tigger ?
I am glad that I bought this one on Chirpbooks.com so I can listen to it again…and again…and…

Recent conversation about Pooh personalities brought to my attention the fact that I had somehow managed to reach the ripe old age of fifty without ever having read the Winnie-the-Pooh books. I have now rectified that omission and am certainly better off for having done so. I enjoyed the stories quite muchly.

I tend to prefer straight reading to dramatization in my audiobooks, but a couple casting choices in this one were so perfect that I'm glad I didn't have it my way. I mean...Geoffrey Palmer as Eeyore? Surely it's the role he was born to play. And the gal who did Piglet was totes presh. Stephen Fry as Pooh didn't quite hit the mark, nor did Tigger's voice, but nothing was atrocious.

I can't possibly adequately express how charming this collection is.

As for the stories themselves, A.A. Milne really captures the whimsy and cozy feeling of a golden childhood. I particularly love how the characters that always underestimate themselves prove they're better and smarter and more courageous and more loved than they think they are. The stories teach you that letting new people into your life is scary, but sometimes opens the doors to strong friendships and people you can always fall back on. They teach you to never give up on adventures and the little things that make you happy, because no matter how scary the world is there will always be bright spots and new things to discover. They teach you that it's okay to move on in your life when you know it's time to grow, but that doesn't mean you have to leave behind the ones who truly love you because they'll always be in your heart. They teach you that there's always something you can do to help someone, and no matter how small your efforts are they make a big impact. They teach you that your imagination can make life endlessly fun. I could go on and on. Even though these stories were written a century ago, the characters and messages are timeless.

I enjoyed all of the narrators. I did struggle listening to a couple at first because they sounded so different than what I would expect their characters to sound like, but then again, it's unfair to expect every narrator to sound like Jim Cummings and the other beloved voice actors from Disney works. A lot of my minute complaints really probably comes down to personal preference, like even though I am a fan of Stephen Fry, I wish his Pooh sounded more lighthearted and whimsical. I particularly liked Judy Dench's Kanga because she sounds exactly like I would expect from such a motherly character. But the real star for me was Geoffrey Palmer (may he rest in peace), whom I've seen in As Time Goes by as a very morose character. He was the PERFECT voice of Eeyore and I loved every line.

A nice short dose of Pooh for Pooh lovers. There are ten stories in all. Each would make a nice bedtime story.

Oh my goodness this was delightful! I absolutely loathe the Disney Winnie the Pooh cartoons, so I didn’t go into this with high expectations. The writing is SO clever and the characters are much more enjoyable! This version was narrated by Stephen Fry, Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer and more. They did an excellent job. I’ve never liked Eeyore before, but this version just made me chuckle.

This is one of our family's very favorites! We've listened to the audiobook many times (this cast of narrators and the other narrator) and read the physical book multiple times as well. I find myself laughing more and loving it more every time.

This was utterly charming, with a full cast recording that really added humour to the characters, and a perfect way to listen to Pooh’s hums. And like all good children’s books, it has that touch of melancholy at the end where you’re forced to realize growing up is inevitable.

Pooh has always been my favorite Disney character but I had never been able to read/hear the stories. This of course didn’t disappoint!
Though it was hard to hear some of the voices differ from what I grew up with the cast did an amazing job. It was beautifully written and performed. It will make you laugh, smile, and possibly cry.

Ah, this was so much fun! I didn't realize how many of the Disney Winnie-the-Pooh stories from my childhood were directly taken from A. A. Milne's original book. This was also a lot of fun to listen to as a full cast audiobook, especially as Pooh has quite a few songs that he sings, so the music accompaniment there made it very engaging.

I had been looking forward to listening to this for awhile ever since I had found out that Stephen Fry narrated part of it. He has such a distinctive voice, which I thought would be excellent in audiobook format. Dame Judi Dench played Kanga and one of the narrators, Stephen Fry was Pooh, Geoffrey Palmer (who starred in the BBC "As Time Goes By" with Dame Judi Dench) was Eeyore, as well as many other well known British actors and actresses. The readers did an excellent job and really made the stories come alive. I had actually never read the actual Pooh books so I figured this was as good a way as any to do it. The two stories themselves were actually really funny, more so than I would've thought, in the way that Shrek appeals to both kids and adults for different reasons. My only gripe is the way Rabbit, Owl and Eeyore kept berating Pooh and Piglet for being "of little brains", even though I thought that Pooh came up with some pretty awesome ideas, poems and songs. Recommended for ages 5+, 4 stars.

This is a full cast audiobook version of these stories and I loved every single nostalgic second.

My grandmother is still a huge Pooh fan, and always says "Oh Bother" which never fails to make both of us smile even when she said it because she was frustrated at something or other.

Stephen Fry, Dame Judi Dench, Jane Horrocks (Bubble from Ab Fab!), and more do the voices and I swear they are even better than the cartoon voices I remember from my childhood. They really bring the characters to life all over again. Would be a great audio to listen to with kids in the car on a trip.

How can one not love Pooh and his friends? Loved it! I loved hearing the voices of Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Geoffrey Palmer, and Richard Daws as the different characters and narrators of these stories. Well done and quite the classic! Much better than the Disney movies in many ways. I will definitely listen to this again and again. This was quite the gem of an audiobook from the Overdrive download collection through the library.

Because of the Final Jeopardy question and my brother's comical response, I realized that I had never read Pooh. I was only aware of the Disney tellings.

What a delight! In addition, this was a full cast audio led by Stephen Fry as Pooh and Dame Judy Dench as both a narrator and Kanga. The voices characterizations were excellent.

I may have been a little late to the game, but at least I got there.

Picked this up on a whim and it's been playing non-stop. The kids beg to bring it into the car, back out of the car, have it playing while they play, as they go to sleep and so on. After hearing it for literally hours, I still find myself laughing out loud at the somewhat maniacal exploits of each superbly realized character.

Adorable. This full cast production is top notch! All of the lovable Winnie-the-Pooh characters are brought to life with the help of Stephen Fry, Judi Dench, Michael Williams and others.

I found myself especially loving the times where Pooh waxes poetic and despite having fluff for brains comes up with good ideas.

The collection of stories is delightfully told through the eyes of a child with a wonderful imagination. If you grew up watching the Disney version, don't expect Pooh and his friends to sound anything like that. The stories are as timeless as ever... simple and sweet as they go on their great adventures or when they try to figure a way out of their little entanglements.

I'm glad I revisited this. Winnie-the-Pooh was such a big part of my childhood, and I loved being able to wander the Hundred Acre Woods again and cry that I'm old now.
