About the author

Michael J. Theurillat (born 1961) is a Swiss writer of crime fiction. Born in Basel, he studied business administration, art history and history. In 2000, he quit his job as an executive with the Swiss bank UBS so as to be able to write full-time.

Theurillat's novels follow the investigations of Kommissar Eschenbach, an investigator with the Zurich police. They have been commercially successful; his third novel, Sechseläuten, was at the head of Swiss bestseller lists following its publication. The Basler Zeitung called him one of Switzerland's most successful crime writers.

Amüsant aber für mich nicht übermässig spannend. Mag es aber wenn ich die Schauplätze in Geschichten persönlich kenne.

Sadly, this constantly felt wrong in two ways. a) It read like a translation. This is not a good sign as one might think the author never quite decided how close to Helvetian he would want to stay. I cannot remember feeling this with the first two Eschenbach novels I read (and which I thought were both better than Rütlischwur). b) It read like a shortened version. The subject matter is too complex for the 380 pages, there is simply too much in too little space, leading to an unfinished, unpolished novel. Also, I could not help but feel that Judith Bill was rather too heavily informed by Lisbeth Salander. Which reminds me: The Larsson-trilogy has thousands of pages…

Theurillats Schreibstil ist präzise und mitreissend, was die Spannung von Anfang bis Ende aufrechterhält. Ein gelungenes Werk für Krimifans, das durch seinen regionalen Bezug und die gelungene Verknüpfung von Historie und Gegenwart besticht.
