Double Feature Annual #1: A Night at the Grand Guignol

Rate this book
After its raucous and playful, shocking and controversial, and wildly entertaining first two issues, DOUBLE FEATURE magazine returns with its double-sized annual " A Night at the Grand Guignol"...
Welcome to Le Theatre du Grand Guignol! Our reputation proceeds us as the foremost purveyors and portrayers of the bizarre, the mad, the violent and twisted - suffice to say none that attend will return home... unsatisfied, shall we say. Nine tales, from nine authors await behind these doors - stories of revenge, of greed, and of denial. But just in case you might think you may uncover some deeper truth upon our stage, think again. We are to shock you, to terrify you with acts so vile, so fantastically savage, you may wonder if our scribes haven't themselves fallen victim to their own more baser drives. Our tales tonight include a garden party of a different sort, a diner where the evils of Americana and monstrous legends of old Europe meet to do battle for their lives...and another slice of pie, and a destitute man learns that something never comes for nothing, and when its time to give back it's too late to escape his darker fate.
Featuring the all-star collection of authors Michael Strong, Melody Alice, w.p. Quigley, S.N. Humphreys, John A. McColley, and Lucienne LeBeau alongside talented first-timers DS Vernon, Madi Quinn, and Maggie Moreau - "The Troupe" deliver nine unflinching and gory visions into the darkest regions of the human psyche.
CONTENT A NIGHT at the GRAND GUIGNOL contains frank, graphic scenes and depictions of everything that could have a content warning attached - as was the tradition of that early 20th century French cultural phenomenon. Reader discretion is advised.
As well as potentially twice-weekly therapist sessions after finishing.

What a book this is! It hearkens back to the twisted and macabre world of the title (Grand Guignol) and these stories are both extremely creepy and fit perfectly with that theme.

From a woman who buys a pair of shoes that REALLY draws people to them, to a "killer" New Year's Eve party, to an old diner where death is on the menu, these stories are a great fun read that gives off Tales From The Crypt or even Twilight Zone vibes.

The artwork in this volume also sets the theme and each page is underlayed with those old school provocative images, ensuring you're fully engaged with the tales.

This anthology is excellent and I highly recommend it.

This review is voluntary and is my own opinion.

A collection of short stories that are incredible and well-written. I read it all in pretty much one sitting and loved the layout (I recommend getting a physical copy 😁).

This anthology boasts 9 stories that are heavily inspired by plays of Paris' early 20th century 'Theatre du Grand Guignol', a theatre that was known for its gruesome, over the top, horror themed plays.

I loved this anthology. The stories reminded me of classic horror, the kind that lingers in your psyche long after the story has ended. It is easy to imagine them being acted out on a risqué Parisian stage. The one criticism I have is some of the stories are hard to physically read as the font blended in with the background.

It's no wonder I kept thinking of the French movie "The Theatre Bizarre" as I was reading these. Both were influenced by 'Theatre du Grand Guignol'. The pages texture, layout, and overall design are reminiscent of a playbill from an actual play.

If you are a fan of retro horror, I recommend checking this book, and "The Theatre Bizarre", out
