"Paul D Wolfe brings out the Bible's teaching about heaven, addressing the various factors that tend to push heaven out of our minds and the gospel remedies that help us push it back to where it belongs."
Paul Wolfe is a friend and it was a pleasure to read his second book. (His first, My God is True, about how he faced cancer is a superb read.)
Paul wants us to live with heavenly-mindedness. The first part of the book recounts the broad sweep of scripture and how God's plan for his people is to fix their hearts and minds on heaven. All things in life are temporary. Only God and heaven are permanent and he demonstrates how to view our marriages, possessions, jobs and sufferings in the light of eternity. Christ has died to take sinners there and we live with the life of God in us.
The shorter chapters in the second part deal with topics such as assurance, the nature of heaven, the reality of hell and how to live wisely. Paul's language is punchy as he writes about what he knows. These themes are not often preached with such vigour but are vital the a true view of life as a Christian.
As pilgrims through this life, enjoying foretastes of heaven as we gather with God's people each Sunday, take up and read to ensure your life is facing the right direction.
Ah the wonderful thought of it…the thought of such a place as Heaven…and knowing that one day all of us who are lovers of God and Disciples of Christ will spend all of eternity there adoring and worshiping our glorious resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I can’t wait until that day when I cross earth’s shores and set my feet upon on the golden shores of Heaven and see my most blessed Lord and Savior. Heaven is a topic of discussion for sinner and saint alike; to the wicked sinner lost in their sin it is a topic for them to discuss in a mocking and light hearted manner but for the lover of God and disciple of Christ, to talk about Heaven and spending eternity there with our Lord and Savior now that is a topic of great joy and delight for us to discuss.
The book, Setting Our Sights on Heaven – Why It’s Hard And Why It’s Worth It,” is a book that extols the joys and blessings that await us as Disciples of Christ in our future and eternal home - Heaven! This is a book worthy of all acceptance and reading by any saint who wants to learn more about how to live “heavenly minded” lives here in this sinful world while yet being “heavenly minded” and “setting our sights on Heaven.”
The author has written the book in 2 Parts: Part 1 being “The World To Come,” and Part 2 “The Cure For What Ails Us.” I smile as I think of the title the author has appropriately chosen for the second part of his book. In his Scripture packed book author Wolfe shares with us just what the Bible teaches about Heaven and being heavenly minded. It is in Part 2 of the book author Wolfe gets real practical and shares with us why he believes that so many saints of God struggle with the idea of Heaven and being heavenly minded. He writes confidently about our not needing to doubt our eternal destiny if we are in Christ and how to break free from the chains of our past, It is in this part of the book in Chapter 7 he separates the fact from fiction; that is the fanciful and fairy tale like ideas some have of Heaven and reveals to us the real picture of what Heaven is like. He shares with us as his reader how we get there and because we are getting there what that means for us as the saints of God.
In Chapter 9 he addresses an issue that has troubled many a saint through the centuries as it still does today and that is know we can know the will of God for our lives. The good news is that God is not trying to hide his will from us as though it were some great secret and mystery; but rather, he delights in revealing his good and perfect will for us so that we might enjoy him and doing his will here on earth until we get to Heaven. In the remaining chapters of the book author Wolfe provides valuable insights for us to know how to live so that we properly prepare our loved ones for our passing from this world into the next. In Chapter 11 titled, “If It’s Sunday, It Must Be Heaven,” he writes about just how “heavenly” and delightful the gathering of the saints together here on earth should be for us as believers. This is a chapter every saint of God needs to read and contemplate on as I fear that for many going to church is a ritual and a drudgery to be endured rather than an opportunity to worship God with our brothers and sisters with a profound sense of awe, reverence and joy.
In Chapter 10 the author takes on the matter of Hell and what the Bible teaches about it. Contrary to the opinion of many in our world today, including some who “profess” to be believers, the author clearly states for us the Biblical position concerning Hell which is that it does exist and that all who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will spend eternity there. What a dreadfully terrifying thought that is – and that thought should move us all as lovers of God and Disciple of Christ to action…and that is to share the hope of the Gospel which is Salvation and the promise of Heaven which is the hope of our ultimate glorification because of the finished work of Christ on the cross with anyone and everyone we can.
In Chapter 13 the author shares with us the reality of our being “Wayfaring Strangers” here on earth and that our pilgrimage here is short and filled with both joy and sorrow, difficulty and delight…but that no matter what our lot in life is we can rejoice and do rejoice that our names are written in the “Lambs Book of Life” and that we indeed are Heaven bound. And soon enough we will be there. Though for some of us when that time comes it will not be soon enough as we make our journey through this world setting our eyes and hope on heaven patiently waiting and enduring the trials we experience here on earth which will make the glory and joy of Heaven all the sweeter. Oh happy day it will be!
And author Wolfe concludes his book with a few final thoughts about what he refers to as the “Suburbs of Heaven.” He quotes the English Puritan Richard Baxter regarding this matter, “And when thou hast, in obedience to God, tried this work, got acquainted with it, and kept a guard on thy thoughts till they are accustomed to obey, thou wilt then find thyself in the suburbs of heaven, and that there is, indeed, a sweetness in the work and the way of God, and that the life of Christianity is a life of joy.” Amen and Amen!
Am I as heavenly minded as I ought to be? Paul D. Wolfe challenges us with this very question, with what is an excellent introduction to the subject of heavenly-mindedness, and does so in a way that is wide-ranging and challenging in both its theology and practicality.
While this is a book that should be read slowly and thoughtfully, I admit that I read it fast, in 2 days. I just couldn't stop reading it. It not only talks about heaven and what scripture says about it, but it presents the Gospel as well. I plan on giving it to someone who doesn't know the way to heaven. I wish I could afford to buy a case of books to give to everyone I know.
