The writing has improved dramatically compared to the first two books in this series, it almost felt like someone else had wrote it! Plus we finally get some answers and everything isn't as hard to follow as it was in the first two books. This series is shaping up to be pretty good 👍

Tempt (Ava Delaney no 3) by Claire Farrell

Tempt is the third book in this series. I enjoyed reading this book as much as I did the previous ones.

Ava is still living a life that she doesn't really want. She is a human/angel/vampire hybrid. Many fear her and want her dead. Others want to use her, exploit her powers. Ava just wants a quiet, ordinary life. There seems little chance of that happening.

Ava is obviously depressed. The burden of trying to restrain the darkness within, the uncertainty of whom or what she really is and the hurt and bitterness from her abusive childhood are all taking their toll on her. She is fighting her feelings for Peter, unsure of how he feels about her, unsure as to whether she can even really trust him. She is surrounded by beings that she is unable to trust. Even her friend Carl begins to lie to her and act strangely. Ava is being suffocated by the fact that so many beings need her abilities and powers but no one seems to really need her. No one loves her.

Becca is a character introduced in book two. A human. The pet of a vampire that had been injecting her an experimental drug from Spain. Becca had hoped it would make her immortal. In book three, Tempt, the drug has mutated her into a beast with an insatiable blood lust. She is more animal than human. She is wrecking havoc where ever she goes, killing indiscriminately. Ava has been charged with her capture in her native Ireland. However Becca escapes to the UK and Ava is forced to follow her there.

Ava is therefore once more drawn into trying to protect the innocent. She is once more more trying to protect humans from beings that regard them as no more than a food source or a nuisance. She longs for the safe world that she once imagined that she lived in, inhabited only by humans. Instead she is surrounded by vampires, angels, demons, shapeshifters, fae and shadows. The world has become a dark and unfriendly place and Ava can no longer hide in the safe little bubble of isolation that she once created for herself.

Ava is a compelling heroine as she is far from perfect. She has a darkness within that wants to break free. She is sarcastic, volatile and grouchy. She has serious issues from her childhood and is confused about her identity as she doesn't truly understand what or whom she is. However, she means well and genuinely cares about people. She even shows compassion for Becca, convinced that humanity must be hidden within the depths of the monster.

I enjoyed this book immensely. I look forward to reading the sequel "Taken" when it is released in 2012.

Ugh. Again. Everyone has answers and Ava is all like "no, I'm better off not knowing" or "I'd just rather not do any training because that won't help." 🙄 Pretty annoying and frustrating that the main character isn't stronger or more mature.

great story

Claire Farrell is very creative. I appreciate her ability to write such a compelling and captivating story without profanity or sexual context I’ve enjoyed all of her books and look forward to reading more.

In this story, Ava’s friend is being attacked and she has to navigate delicate political issues to be able to set him free. In addition a group of rogue vampires scientists have created a serum that turns humans into the worst kind of monsters. Ava has to go clean up their mess.

Very good read, super engaging though I'm truly dying to know all of Ava's abilities. She seems strong in some aspects but so weak in others. Now that Becca has been dealt with, I'm wondering if we'll ever find out why she was so wary of Ava, even when she became a much stronger being...

BTW...we get to know some of Eddie's story but who or what the hell is Maeve?

The best review I can give is to say that after reading this book, I got the last 3 in this series and the first in the series with Ava that is after this one. The climax scenes are intense, making me want to finish and get her past that. I hope she continues to keep her writing improving as it has with each book so far.

True Family

I gave this book a rating of 5 because I loved it. It made me happy when Ava learned the true meaning of family. She showed determination and courage when it came to saving the ones that she loves. I recommend this book to anyone that loves anything supernatural.

The mix

The storyline for this book was as good as ever. The characters seem to have grown personally and in friendship. It was nice to see some new faces added and can't wait to see where they turn up. Loved this one as much as the others.

Excellent

Excellent finish to this storyline! Looking forward to the continuing saga. This book reminds me of both the Dresden filed and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum. What a fun combination

I'm absolutely in love with this series and I love the style of writing.

So much has been resolved but there is still so much more waiting to be discovered and answered!

I really can't wait to read on, so much so that I can't even bring myself to write a detailed book review right now!

No cliff ending

Bummer. Kind of a mushy ending. Some things changed. Some stayed the same. Some were mysterious. And oh, Carl!!!! Sigh

Awwww

This one ended on an "awww" note. We continue to learn more about Ava as she navigates her murky world but begins to figure out who she can depend on.

I love this series. Tempt felt more like a full novel not a novella. Ava is still growing in her powers and understanding of what she is. She doesn't know who to trust and for certain, I couldn't tell her if she jumps form the pages to ask. The woman is surrounded by people and people-ish persons that can't be trusted to pour a glass of water without exacting a price. I won't lie, Ava's temper got on my nerves but after awhile Ms. Farrell provided a legit explanation of why Ava was so moody. It made sense and all is forgiven.

I recommend this series to UF fans especially those who like their lit on the cheap. The author is either Irish or a Brit based on some of the lingo but it doesn't take anything away from the story. There is a budding love story but I don't see it ever going beyond a kiss or long embrace. It's a loss because it doesn't feel YA to me. It's just that the story wouldn't work with graphic sex. I don't see Ava telling the reader how sex feels. She has a great voice but I don't know how that would work. Ava is always running from her feelings or wanting to kill someone. She has a way to go to get to the maturity needed to pull off a good love scene. Sorry romance fans.

The level of action is impressive and well done. I also feel like the author is invested in this character as she seems to always stay true to Ava's personality. I don't think Ms. Farrell will sell out anytime soon for commercial mainstreaming. If you are considering something new, give this one a try. BTW -- no cliffhanger.

Did I say I love this series?

(tiny spoilers in this review)

She’s back. Ava is back. She’s chasing Becca down and nothing is going to stop her. She’ll go to the ends of the Earth if need be. Liverpool to be exact.

It’s good to see that the sixteen-year-old Ava is in the closet and the ass-kicking Ava is back in the forefront. She’s still vulnerable and she still cares about humans to a fault. She also cares about her friends. I like that about her though.

Her relationship with Peter gets leveled up a notch thanks to some supernatural powers. It still makes things heated and interesting. Where there’s smoke there’s fire, right?

We learn more about Eddie and even though his level of mystery has lessened he remains an enigma. He’s a powerhouse and his agenda is still a riddle. Every time I learn something about him, I end up with even more questions. I like that about his character. He constantly keeps me interested.

In fact, all the supporting characters are interesting and fascinating, with the exception of Carl. Carl is more like the warm cup of cocoa on a cold day. He’s the family Ava desperately needs. The security she wants. He’s safe.

Even if it weren’t for the characters in the story, I would have kept reading for the plot. It was well-paced. It wasn’t action packed but it was still nicely paced.

I’m still left with questions about Ava and her nephilim ancestry and whether or not there are more like her out there. I’ll just have to wait for book four to come out.

As with the first two in the series, I devoured this book. The characters are still being explored; the plot still has elements of "heard it before" and yet somehow is still compelling; the voice is still informal but not childish. I'm now at a crossroads as to whether to delve into books 4-6, or give it some time first. Once again, the book does feel finished, but there is obviously room for a sequel(s) - this one definitely has a more final feel, being the conclusion of a trilogy, but knowing there are more, I can see how the segway might go.
In summary, well done Claire Farrell, you've won me over completely on the character of Ava and on your writing style.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you're going to read this or any of the other books in the trilogy, I implore you to make sure the Irish accent of the characters comes through in your mental voice - it really, really improves the atmosphere and flow of conversations!

The emotional involvement is improving over the course of the series, which made me enjoy this one more than the first two installments. Characters are developing nicely. The heroine has the potential for being way overpowered, but so far the author has restrained herself on that front and kept her powers within reasonable boundaries. Interesting complications are developing between the heroine and the cast of secondary characters.

I don't like much romance in my UF, and thankfully the author has kept that well leashed. Much more so than with most UF heroines. There isn't much here that is startlingly original, but I think with some maturity this could be an interesting series. Really, IMHO, the first three books would have been better rewritten as two books. Some work on the plotting and worldbuilding could have made them sparkle. It'll be worth reading the next one or two installments to see what future improvements the author makes.

Throughout this series there’s quite a bit that happens, but I’m glad that Farrell has written the story in a way where when one book ends, the following novel will pick up just about where the previous novel closed. And there was no exception with Tempt!

What I enjoyed about Tempt:

These books are fast reads. Like, 1-3 hour reads.
The pacing of the novels are fast, which keeps the story interesting.
There is a lot of fighting that takes place throughout the series, but I am always surprised by just how much fighting scenes there are.
How caring Ava is, even after all that’s been done to her.
Farrell’s writing sucks me into her books so quickly. I honestly love Farrell’s writing so much. She has to be one of my favourite authors of all time.

I give Tempt, 3 stars.

After having read all three books in this series, I'm more convinced than ever that this is going to be my most favorite fantasy fiction series ever. I was a little disappointed that Ava didn't get around to fulfilling her promise to Lorcan and Lucia, but I imagine that will be the center of the next book.

At any rate, this has been the most fulfilling and satisfying series I've read in a long time. I didn't get tired of the characters. The story line was fresh and original for the entire series. The action moved along efficiently and the stories were very believable. I'm looking forward to the next installment. Can't wait until book four comes out now.

I liked this book even better than the last. Ava is coming into her powers and finally making her own kind of family. The ending is more positive and I love where the story went with the beast and the British vampires. I loved the new characters she met in Liverpool and am excited to get to know them better. I loved how Ava got the better of the sucumbus neighbor and how Peter finally kissed her. I hope to see some more of that in the next book. Gabe is starting to be more in the picture and I am not sure what to think of him. Can't wait for the next book.

I think this is my favourite so far in this series. I like the lead character more and more, and the supporting characters are represented strongly and have very distinctive characters. This gives the novel a well rounded feel and provides some realistic moods.

The mix of supernaturals has a good feel, with no one area completely overwhelming the essence of the others. This is all whipped together to produce a good strong story line fleshed out with plenty of atmosphere with consistently new ideas thrown in for good measure.

Ava is still sorting through all the issues in her life and Becca is running rampant through the city. Becca turned into some grotesque beast and it looks like Ava might be the only one to stop her. She is doing her best, but things are rough. Carl is acting weird and who knows if she can trust Peter or Eddie or anyone else for that matter.

I'm looking forward to continuing this series. It's been fun.
